Great Book For introductory Spanish.......2007-06-18

I was taught with this book and I bought it to study over the summer. It's great for learning spanish. The order some subjects come up is a bit odd, but it's a great textbook. I suggest buying one of the used copies (which are generally in really good condition) to save around $70

I hate this book.......2006-10-19

I teach Spanish and the reason I hate this book is because it introduces
concepts and then gives little or no practice. The order in which
things are introduced is a confusing at times. There is way too much
eye candy and not enough attention to working out the kinks.
Other superior products are available at a much more reasonable price.

Same Book Used by our School District.......2003-09-20

This is the same book used by our public school district. We are in one of the leading districts in the nation. The only negative I have is the price. I found it new at Walmart>Books>Textbooks for a lower price. Even they are higher than the publisher's price. Buy it here if you have confidence in your seller. I won't!

Fast and easy, a great way to learn!.......2000-05-02

En Espanol is a great way to learn spanish. Its chapters are set up in an easy, logical order. There are lots of review exercises and the set-up is appealing. Not only do you learn basic vocab, there are sections on culture and history. The pages are bright and are geared toward middle/high school aged kids. At the end of every chapter there is a vocab list compiling all the new words from the chapter. It also contains a Spanish/English, English/Spanish dictionary in the back for easy reference. En Espanol makes learning spanish fun and easy.

The Beginning of an Education in Spanish.......2000-05-22

Empieza aquí!.......2007-09-04

If you are a complete beginner, as I was when I bought this book, be prepared to find yourself speaking and understanding before you are halfway through.

I think the reason this book is so effective is the amount of practice, exercises and examples, that it holds. Filling in the spaces is somehow very satisfying, because the lessons leave little doubt that you're doing it right.

I've seen the criticism concerning the book's lack of answers (teacher guide), but I didn't even notice, much less find it a problem. I suppose if I were homeschooling, and had no knowledge of Spanish myself, I might want an easy way to check the work, but honestly, a person who is working through the book is going to get it right.

I can prove it: email me in Spanish, and I'll not only understand what you say, I'll answer you in pretty passable espanol.

Spanish primer that needs some updates.......2005-10-01

This was the text selected for an extention class in conversational Spanish. Unfortunately, some of the words were either out-dated or only applicable to European Spanish rather than Mexican and Central American Spanish. It would be helpful if those distinctions were spelled out. The text does provide very useful, yet simple, explanations for grammar rules.

Excelent beginner's book........2005-09-27

I just started a beginning conversational Spanish class. This is the recommended textbook. It is very easy to follow. Not intimidating at all for a beginner.

Great for Spanish 1 - 1 1/2.......2005-08-12

I have used this text for ages 12 through college aged students to fulfill State Requirements for Spanish One through Spanish "one and a half" - it really goes beyond just Spanish One.

The best thing is that each lesson is begun with a story and picture. Many of them are short skits or plays, and so engage the student in a way that other Spanish textbooks do not. The grammar lessons and exercises are well put-together, though may require a teacher to help truly explain the more detailed points. If you're worried about pronunciation, there is a CD or tape set, I believe, but I have never used it.

There are vocabulary exercises in the back as well as Culture Units. A VERY thorough book, WELL worth the money in a textbook and workbook combination. I love books that are designed to be written in!

For the younger child, this is too advanced and moves too quickly - there are about 50 words per lesson to memorize. Instead, take a look at Flip Flop Spanish.

Easy because it's natural........2005-06-02

This is the easiest language instruction book I've seen. It's easy because it doesn't try to make you memorize long unique-use phrases like, "Are there any seats available in first class?" that you'll use once in your life ... maybe. Instead it teaches everyday words and sentences in a natural and intuitive way, the way a child learns to speak, by first learning to identify simple objects with pictures, then learning things about the objects like where, how many, etc. You understand the parts of the sentences and begin to learn how to form your own sentences, which is much better than memorizing phrases with little understanding of how and why the sentence was constructed the way it was.

A good book, but way over priced........2004-07-24

This book has 21 1/2 pages of which 2 1/2 are pictures. A fair price for this book would be about $1.50. It was easy to read but the plot was very weak.

A True Nailbiter..........2001-12-31

I liked this book a lot! I am a second year Spanish student and this is the first true spanish book I've read. It begins with Carlos vacationing in Marabella with his wife, Laura, and his best friend Fernando. When he begins to see a vision from the past, his whole world is turned upside down and he truly begins to question what is real and what isn't. I enjoyed this book because the Spanish vacabulary wasn't incredibly difficult, and the plot was so exciting so I truly couldn't put it down!

My first spanish book.......2000-09-12

For my Spanish class, my professor suggested this book. Being my first Spanish book, I really enjoyed it. I recommend this book to any beginning or intermediate spanish studetns. Enjoy!

Es un libro divertido y muy fácil de leer. Es ideal para estudiantes de nivel elemental de español. Yo lo he usado con mis estudiantes, de entre 12 años y edad adulta, y les ha gustado mucho. El protagonista del libro es un muchacho alemán que estudia español en Madrid, hace buenos amigos allí y logra hacer realidad sus sueños. La autora es una gran poetisa y una maravillosa profesora de español como segunda lengua. El libro es muy recomendable.

An Excellent Next Step for the Beginner and Intermediate Student of Spanish.......2005-08-17

I found the Level 1 series of "Leer in Español" by Santillana USA Publishing Company to be a strong complement to Pimsleur's audio courses (which are also excellent). I have read all of Level 1 now (using a vocabulary limited to 400 words), and I am proceeding to Level 2 (using 700 words). The texts use mostly present tense verbs, which are more accessible to beginners, but some preterit and perfect tense forms appear as well. The stories are engaging, but the texts are didactic also, deliberately illustrating varying uses of Spanish verbs and prepositions which defy exact English translation and thereby providing more experience with the language, both in its everyday forms and more lyrical possibilities.

A simple mystery.......2000-05-10

The Universidad de Salamanca-Santillana has publishedasimplified yet well done version of the story El misterio de lallave. It is entirely in Spanish and is written for 4-8 year oldnative speakers but I am using it in my Spanish One course at the high school level. What I find useful, besides a very interesting story line, are the nice illustrations, helpful questions for comprehension, and the dictionary at the end of the book. I especially enjoyed the dictionary as all of the words are defined in Spanish. I heartily recommend this book to Spanish parents desiring to introduce their children to good stories and Spanish teachers wanting to teach literature starting the first year.
