4 out of 5 stars A handy keep-on-hand reference.......2007-07-27

My copy of this book is now dog eared, flagged, noted, highlighted and generally well used. The author gives pertinent information in an engaging format. I have found this book very handy in instilling the "frame of reference" for writing conflict that is technically well-executed. This was a quick read that gave a pretty good bang-for-the-buck.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2006-09-25

This is the most helpful book on writing that I've ever read. Period. Every time I read through it again, or page through to reread my highlighted sections, I'm amazed by the mixture of common sense, insight, alacrity and experience that fill every page.

Noble's secrets on subtly and misdirection, finding ways to let scenes, storylines, and themes converge, and insights on character development, transitions, and story structure will improve the work of any author. Guaranteed.

Whether you write for a living or as a hobby, your library of writing resources will never be complete without a copy of "Conflict, Action & Suspense." Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Drama Loop.......2006-07-28

This is, quite possibly, the best book in the Elements of Writing Fiction series.
The purpose of this book appears to be giving you an idea of how to create abstract opposites to further your story or novel. Please don't mistake it as a fiction band-aid: it's not. It may, however, get you through one of those boring middle sections by giving you ideas on what it is you need to fix to get your story running again. The book provides examples through the works of others, suggestions, and good explanations as to why the author is pushing his method. I thought the way he built on each topic was a little funny at first, but upon re-reading, I find the method actually serves to make his points better.
All in all, I keep this on the desk where I write, for when I am stuck in one of those writing quagmires.
A must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2005-09-12

Great read. A must have for the writer to be. It made me rethink my novel, and it was for the better.

2 out of 5 stars All Technique? How About Heart, Soul, and Guts?.......2005-04-01

So much of this book seems to be devoted to the singular objective of conjuring up and applying technique--for the sake of conjuring up and applying technique. How about heart, soul, and guts, the innards of what makes a truly great novel great? After reading Conflict, Action, and Suspense I find not the slighest nod in this direction. If, for example, you set out to portray a protagonist with deep-seated psychological problems, is it best to first think of how to create conflicts and actions for him / her, as Noble urges? Or, is it best to largely monologue your way into the story in order to "set up" the forthcoming suspenseful situations you have in store for him / her? If you carefully shepherd the reader's thought-flow by way of psychological portrait, isn't this a better setting of the stage for real life-like suspense to follow? Sure, most writers of books on writing will tell you that you must make things get very ugly, very quickly. But, is this really the best way to paint the Celebrated Dreamer, The Simpleton, The Fool In Love, The Anti-Hero who believes his peers are all conditioned to suppose they can get rich "thinking" while other schmucks sweat? ##### Noble writes well enough. And, there is no shortage of ideas in this book. But, alas, the ring of "artificiality" is too much for me.

4 out of 5 stars Not Great but not bad but I have seen it before..........2007-05-19

Is Sean telling us there is a hell of a lot of evil here on earth in the Vatican no less?
If there was a ranking of 3.5 stars I might have given the book this rating. It did hold my interest somewhat. But genetic time bombs kind of bore me with just targeting the JEWS.
There was a fictional story some time ago,I can't remember the title of the book or story, sorry about that, about a genetic bomb to decimate the Pakistani population in London.
So, I have read a similar premise before.

Sean, how about in your next book you have the main character that is someone who has all your talents and experiences fight and deal with the bad guys of the world. The story would begin in the teen years of the main character and would follow thru his adulthood.

Of course, your story would probably have to be a triology. The growing up years, your military training and what you now do. But these three books would have to tie everything with the illuminati and maybe the end times, as well as the satanists that run, the governments of the USA, Europe, China, Russia, Japan, and other Far East Nations and the Muslim world, not restricted to the Middle east either. I almost forgot, don't leave out the international drug cartel that keeps Wall Street in the Green. This book may be a little dangerous for you to write. But it is easy for an author to pick on the Vatican and Jews. It has been done to many times before. Let's think outside of the Catholic and Jewish box.

Or how about writing about a book about the development of satelites that
kills muslims when they are in a state of prayer. The sophisticated satalite picks up the brain waves, instead of using biologicals picking up on genes, of those who are praying to Allah and they are zapped by a beam weapon or scalar technology in mosques.

Or if this is to hot of a topic, how about satelites picking up brain waves of mormons in prayer. Pick your religion, but please don't use the color of a persons skin as the killer determinant, unless of course it is white.

But in all serious, Sean, your next fictional book(s) should have its main character be based on you and your extrodinary talents and experiences. Maybe you don't want to do this, but it would be terrific, I know, I remote viewed it.

Best of Luck in your future endeavors,
Betrayed

Book Description

For nearly three decades, the fate of 2,000 american servicemen, missing in action in Vietnam, has remained a mystery. Now, with the ring of a doorbell, the mystery of some is about to be solved.

Smalltown newspaper editor Jason Harper answers his door in the middle of the night to see an oder man, shabbily dressed, with gray hair and a beard. And in a split second, Jason's life turns upside down. The man claims to be Jason's older brother Roy, shot down over North Vietnam in 1972.

Jason's joy at reuniting with his brother is quickly tempered as ruthless killers begin pursuing his family and friends, and as his faith in the man's claims threatens to tear his family apart -- even if they do all make it out alive. Author Brendan DuBois pulls readers along for a harrowing ride on a deadly mission to reveal the truth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strong Stand Alone Thriller: Betrayed by Brendan Dubois.......2004-04-14

In his latest novel, which is a stand-alone thriller and a break from his very enjoyable Lewis Cole series, the author uses the legacy of Vietnam MIA's as a backdrop and theme for an incredible story. As in his series work, individuals within the U.S. Government who seek to profit off of others are once again the target of the author's wrath as well as the fact that the MIA issue remains unsolved due to sheer political greed.

In 1972 Roy Harper was shot down over North Vietnam. He survived the crash, was listed as Missing In Action, and thirty years later arrives home and on his brother's doorstep. His brother, Jason Harper is married with a young son and is a small town newspaper editor as well as co owner of the small paper with his wife, Patty. When his brother arrives in the middle of the night seeking his help, Jason lets him in against the wishes of his wife who isn't convinced that the scruffy man is really Roy.

By doing so, Jason unleashes a wave of terror on his family and friends. Roy is a target of a hit squad with instructions to kill him as well as anyone he goes to seeking help. There simply can't be any record of his astounding story or any witnesses left alive. Roy, Jason, and his family are soon on the run with a determined team in their wake. Assuming they can stay alive long enough, it will be one heck of a story about the past and corruption at the highest levels of American government. But they need proof and there is at least one witness who knows all that must be found first. Then there is the question of whether Roy is really Roy as he claims or someone at random that has drawn them into his nightmare.

It is extremely tempting to attempt to draw links between these fictional characters in this 372-page novel and certain high profile public officials in and out of government service. Certain hints are planted in regards to some of the characters and one gets the feeling that a majority if not all of this book is a thinly fictionalized veil over the truth. If so, the fact that the events depicted or something similar could happen is appalling and if it got out and was proven true, would shake the foundations of American Government far more than anything that has happened in the past.

If it is fiction and nothing more than fiction, the book is reduced to being just an incredible read. Full of complex characters, intrigue, plot twists and plenty of action, it also reminds this reviewer of early Robert Ludlum work. This novel certainly deserves the "Thriller" designation even though it is not marketed as such. As in his other books, Brendan Dubois once again writes an intense character driven novel that is a very good read.

4 out of 5 stars A very competent thriller.......2004-02-27

After a disappearance of almost thirty years, Roy Harper rings the doorbell of his brother, Jason. Roy was MIA during the Vietnam war and has not been seen since. Before Roy could tell Jason what happened, two crazed assassins come to the house threatening the lives of not only Roy and Jason but Jason's wife and child. This sets up a cat and mouse scenario where Jason's family must try to hide while Jason and Roy go on one final mission. The problem for Jason is that he has no idea what they must do.
Brendan DuBois writes a very competent thriller. Suspense is created and sustained by alternate POVs. Characters are reasonably well sketched but villains are stereotypic. The problem is the length. The book really could have been cut over 100 pages. The bottom line is a very entertaining thriller and worthy of a reader's attention.

5 out of 5 stars Brendan Dubois Finest!.......2004-01-23

I have read all of Brendan Dubois' novels and this stands out as his finest by a significant margin. Given that his other novels are also excellent, this should give you an idea how good this book is. This book has everything - fast paced action that never lets up, real, believable characters, a moving plot that leaves you pondering long after the book is read, and a fantastic end that has you guessing right up to the last page. I go through a novel each week. Most are forgettable. This one is not. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Thriller.......2004-01-10

See book summary above.

Brendan DuBois should gain many new fans with this more than satisfying thriller. He takes a new angle on the MIA's of Vietnam and makes a very plausible thriller with it.
Fast-paced with vivid imagery, this novel will definitely satisfy all thriller readers. It is truly hard to put down.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great ride.......2003-08-16

The author knows how to spin a fantastic tale that always just skirts along the edge of totally believable. Unlike so many political "thrillers", this one feels like it could be true, and this is directly because of the author's ability to pull us along for the ride. He makes the mountains of New Hampshire ring with menace and intigue. It is a great book, and I heartily endorse it to anyone who doesnt want to get any sleep for a night or two!

Amazingly, first-time thriller writer Steven D. Salinger finds something new to say about the Vietnam War and its effects on the American soul in this strong, touching story about two very different GIs still "in country" 25 years later. Colonel Everett Ransom, found badly wounded in the jungle, is restored to health by former POW Zack Johnson, who is living with a Vietnamese woman and working as a village doctor. Ransom engaged in some questionable activity for an American defense contractor called Parker Global, whose employees in Manhattan are being killed off in ways familiar to soldiers who served in Southeast Asia. Two NYPD homicide detectives, coyly named Barton and Fink, delve into the mystery stateside, while Ransom tries to protect Johnson and his girlfriend from the many people who would like to see them dead.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your Time!.......2002-08-04

Having enjoyed Salinger's, White Darkness, very much, I was very disappointed in this author's first book, Behold The Fire. While the basic plot was okay, Salinger's characters were too shallow and poorly developed, his writing style was too disjointed and after a while I found myself not caring at all about what was to happen next. My main goal became to just finish this book, which was a struggle. While I, obviously, don't recommend Behold The Fire to you, I would highly recommend White Darkness by Salinger. It not only has a well-developed plot and interesting characters, it clearly demonstrates Salinger's improvement as a writer.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but where was the editor?.......1998-10-23

A good book for the airplane and fairly well written. Unlike a number of thrillers, this one has some unique and interesting characters. Some errors of fact and continuity, however, reflect a negligent editor. For example, we are told that a just murdered person was 48 years old. Later we are told this person was 24 years old in 1963. This would imply the story is occurring in 1987 or, at the latest, 1988. Yet elsewhere the book proceeds as if it were the 1990s. For example, we are told that it has been over 20 years since the Vietnam war ended (a war which ended in 1975) and we are told that a Senator from Alaska has served for over 20 years since the 1970s. Errors such as these mar what otherwise can be an entertaining read.

    3 out of 5 stars Rather Dissapointing.......1998-04-11

All in all an average book. The basic plot was excellent, but the telling of the story was too shallow. By the end of the book, I was reading just to finish it. I was dismayed by the destroyer/battleship mix-up; shouldn't someone have caught that before it was published?

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate Expose of Individuality's Decline and Promise.......1997-10-11

"Behold the Fire" explores the sale of the individual to the greater forces of commerce and politics. In a world of agendas that disregard honor and life, main characters Mel Fink and Isaac Johnson emerge as twin representations of the glory and challenge of perseverance. As their disparate tales unfold and wend poignantly toward unity, the reader travels not only the globe, but the vast internal landscapes of hope, friendship, love, and survival, the last of these amounting to the greatest measure of the human soul. In this debut novel, Steven D. Salinger gives the thriller a deep literary resurrection, confirming the profoundest truth that the key to all events lies in the character of its participants.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those whose lives were touched by Nam.......1997-08-30

US Army Corporal Zack Johnson, an MIA held prisoner in Cambodia for over two decades, rescues Ev Ransom, an illegal arms dealer for Parker Global, an American defense contractor. In gratitude, Ev decides to help free Zack. However, Ev had not counted on the Pentagon, who do not wish for an MIA to suddenly appear after denying the existence of such beings for years.

At the same time, NYPD Lieutenant Mel Fink is investigating the strangling deaths of several Parker Global executives. While Mel struggles with his investigation, Zack finds himself the intended target of assassins who may be working for the Feds, the Congress, Global, and Cambodia. Only Mel and Ev can keep Zack (and for that matter his mother also) alive while the world gives the returning vet a less than hero's welcome.

BEHOLD THE FIRE is an extremely exciting chiller that may be one of the top ten thrillers this year. Steven D. Salinger demonstrates incredible degrees of talent with his debut novel that feels comfortable in the jungles of Cambodia, New York City, and Washington DC. Readers will be chanting encore from the new giant on the scene.

In Richard Barre's The Ghosts of Morning, a homicide that exploded the glorious sun, surf, and beach-party youth of two teenage surfers in still-golden Southern California reemerges to haunt the lives of the survivors.

Wil Hardesty, Vietnam vet, ex-surfer and ex-husband (introduced in Barre's Shamus-winning The Innocents) is sucked into the intrigues of a wealthy and powerful family, the Van Zants. Denny Van Zant, Wil's mentor and friend in the Southern California surfing fraternity, enlisted in the Vietnam-era Marines to escape allegations of a homicide cover-up and died in the bloody assault on Hue. Now, however, his mother has received an anonymous letter. Denny is alive, and for a large sum of money, he can be found. She needs an investigator. Hardesty, pulled into the investigation by gratitude for past kindnesses, finds himself ensnared and finally endangered by the opposing claims of loyalty, love, and, finally, the truth.

Barre's well-crafted narrative propels a believably human Hardesty into the worlds of news reporting, police investigations, body builders, dingy seaside motels, and a haunted post-Vietnam bivvy for burnouts outside Hilo, Hawaii. Amid escalating violence, each puzzle Hardesty solves raises new questions. He moves inexorably toward a final confrontation in the penthouse of an L.A. office tower, looking down on the glittering lights and dark shadows of his city and his past. --Barbara Schlieper

    Book Description

In his Shamus Award-winning first novel, The Innocents, Richard Barre introduced audiences to Wil Hardesty, a private eye with a deep, dark past--and an uncertain future. In The Ghosts of Morning, Barre plunges further into Wil's history, to a far off place where murder and friendship collide.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Please welcome warmly, a new entry, Wil Hardesty.......2006-06-02

Listen to this. "[H]e let his eyes drift out onto green grass meticulously trimmed and maintained, an island of order in a sea of chaos." Or, "[H]e took the bridge over to the old Van Zant house, structurally unchanged . . . living room and dining room facing the water. But the color scheme was different. Either that or . . . "

Get it? Richard Barre paints a canvas, sometime very detailed, sometimes impressionistic, and only when he's finished with it does he introduce you to his characters.

Others do that as well. James Lee Burke comes to mind. They are poets who tell stories. Reread James Dickey's "Deliverance" and you'll see what I mean.

Another point I enjoy about Barre is his respect for the Vietnam vet. I served in Vietnam so I am sometimes drawn to that genre. It's never as heroic or slash and dash as many authors make it; but Barry and a few others (Eisler, DeMille, Crais, Burke) speak to the fear, the lonlieness and the inability, ever, to distance oneself from it. Read Dick Winters' "Beyond Band of Brothers" to get a picture of the vets of Easy Company at Normandy, now in their 80's, able to recollect painful events in 'living color.'

Here Wil Hardesty is asked after an 8 year hiatus of his best friend's funeral, to see if he can find Denny Van Zant. Van Zant was killed in Vietnam, possibly murdered, and his body decomposed over a decade. What was returned wasn't much. Now Maeve Van Zant was contacted by someone who claims to know where Van Zant is. Hardesty strongly urges her to forget it, and then relents and embarks on a mission of double cross, revenge, conspiracy, unexpected twists and retribution. Well written, highly recommended. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury

3 out of 5 stars GOOD CHARACTER---NOT SO GOOD BOOK!!!!!!.......2002-02-18

I have read three books about Wil Hardesty. I really like the character. That is the only reason I gave it a three. Did not really like this book. Not as good as the others I have read. A lot of this was totally unbelieveable. Also, I do not like flashbacks but am sure a lot of people do. Wil is someone I can relate to. He is not superman, he does make mistakes, he does get hurt. There are really two things Hardesty is trying to find out. Is Denny Van Zant still alive and who killed Carmen Marquez. Are they tied together??? Trina Van Zant, name is different after three marriages, leds Wil a merry chase. It all does finally get drawn to a close but I have read better by Barre.

    1 out of 5 stars I'm in Mourning.......2001-10-16

After reading the reviews here on Amazon I decided to buy this book. It was extremely difficult to read the writing is blunt and has no flow to it whatsoever. The characters are shallow (although this is probably because of the writing style) and the language is bad making the characters seem unintelligent.

4 out of 5 stars Fast And Furious.......2001-01-31

I wouldn't compare Richard Barre to Ross Macdonald or for that matter Raymond Chandler. Macdonald's writing was more subdued and touching, Chandler more witty and crackling, while Barre's is more 'wham bam'..'lets go'.

The Ghosts Of Morning is like that, fast, and twisting, it reminded me of a good action flick. Around page seventy the story really kicks into gear. I didn't find the plot confusing, Barre held it together nicely, injecting little tidbits of information to keep the reader guessing.

The flashbacks scenes are written very well as our hero Will Hardesty, attempts to find some meaning from his past as well as how it connects to his future.

Hardesty is a part-time P.I. hired by his best friends mother to find her son, who everyone has presumed dead for years. Hardesty takes the job as a favor, not realising the depth of the secret's his former friends family has buried.

I agree with some of the other reviews that, some of the charecter's are sketcy and typical, BUT the story moves along so nicely that i just ignored these shortcomings.

    A very nice read...enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Unrealistic characters, incomprehensible plot..........2000-06-23

Sorry, all you Barre fans, but I just don't get it. This Hardesty character seems like a cartoon to me, and the complicated plot became downright tedious after awhile. I think this author is incredibly overrated.

5 out of 5 stars If you care at all about POW's this book is a must read!.......2007-05-26

From the first few pages this book hooks you. I really loved the lead character, especially his name "Jacob Slaughter". Great story, it really sucks you in. I just hope none of that stuff really happens. Wes should be writing screenplays.

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.......2003-01-26

Wes Demott has written a great book and that is all there is to it. Wes Demott is also my neighbor but that is not why i am writing this review. I remember when he was writing this book i always want to read it but i was to young. I just finished it after a couple of weeks and absolutely loved it. I am yet to read Vapors and hope that he will write again. So overall i am just telling you to READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fast moving, engaging plot. More than worth the time........1999-04-05

After quitting on the last "thriller" I was reading, this book was quite a welcome surprise. It pulls you in on the first page and it doesn't let you go until the conclusion. The characters are exciting, very real and believeable and easy to relate to. I found myself siding with Slaughter's cause, admiring his courage and rooting for him in the end. Without giving away the plot, it disturbed me very deeply and made me question the line between DeMott's fiction and reality. The writer came across as a very credible source, although the book jacket did not mention him as a former POW. I have already bought his second book, Vapors. I'll review it when I'm finished. You shouldn't miss Walking K. Hope DeMott does well. Be cool.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, gripping, powerful and emotional.......1998-11-27

Rare is the book that combines non-stop action and ompelling story lines to evoke true emotion. But Walking K does just that thanks to the talented hand of Wes DeMott. From the opening scenes and our heroe's tortured past, to the horrific dilemna and hitman confronting him, Jacob Slaughter faces his past and future with the US government hot on his heels and the issue of Vietnam POWs once again rearing its ugly head. Not only can we empathise with Slaughter's twisted nightmares in a POW camp, we can sense his knawing need to right the injustice of those left behind and the intense heat from a bomb blast meant to silence him. Slaughter is truly a man alone set out to free those the government says is dead and in the process, his soul. The characters are real, emotions raw, the action non-stop and the hale-Mary pass delivers. Walking K is an exciting and thrilling ride through the political and emotional landscape.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, heart wrenching, nail biting storyline........1998-11-04

Walking K is one of those books I read in one sitting, it was almost impossible to put down. It takes a strong hold of your emotions from the very beginning. After, I went back and read some of the best parts again. It was disappointing to run out of pages. DeMott's characters come to life with such vivid intensity. They are real people. It is obvious the Vietnam conflict meant a lot to this author, as his writing reflects his feelings and frustrations on the POW situation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Walking K, and I am looking forward to reading more of DeMott's writing.
