Customer Reviews:
Quite disappointing.......2007-08-17
I've studied Spanish, French, German, and Portugese by CD, and in all cases was able to learn by playing the CDs while I drove, or by listening on my iPod while I did other things. With this set, however, that is not possible.
The CDs included have NO LESSONS on them. The lessons are in the included book. To use this series, one is intended to read the lesson in the book, then play the corresponding track on the CD to hear pronunciation, and then stop the CD and go back to reading the book. It requires an incredible amount of active participation, which is the opposite of why we buy language lessons on CD!
In the past I've used the Instant Immersion series and been very happy with it for Spanish, French, and German. I'm wishing I'd have bought it for Italian too, but I decided to try something different. I regret that choice, and I will most likely toss this product into the trash can and order the Instant Immersion Italian series.
I gave it two stars rather than one (or none, if that's possible) because while I find this to be in opposition to what I expect from a language learning system, I have to give credit for the amount of work involved in compiling such a product. For those with the time and ability to learn this way, the product seems adequate. Also, if nothing else, the box contains an English-Italian dictionary, in addition to the lesson book, so there's at least something useful included.
a great start for serious learners.......2007-07-24
Language learning from zero has never been easy. i am about finish this basic pack. without any knowledge of Italian before, i can pickup some paragraphs in Bell' Italia (a magazine can be found at some newsstands) with some help from the included dictionary.
this set is not really for driving-learning. because the CD has no English. for me, who had no idea of Italian before, the learning is not piece of cake. There is no rush hour killing time stuff works for me. By putting effort seriously on this book about 30 minutes everyday, I saw the result at the end of this book. So, I think if you seriously want to learn Italian, this is a great start kit. If throwing out couple of sentences in exotic flavor from time to time is your goal, go for those CD only packages.
Lack of time to take a course in class? Look no further!.......2006-05-30
I always wanted to speak another language. Although I am bilingual, fluent to Spanish, Italian was my next goal. Since is similar to Spanish, I wasnt too hard for me to learn. But some words in Italian I had no idea what it meant or how to say it, but with this item it made it much easier to learn and to follow. I will take a class next semester, but if you dont have the time to do so, then I stronly recommend this coursebook/cd...All I need is SOMEONE to practice so I can get more confident. Of all course books outhere that I reviewed and actually opened to read them, this one was the best one for me.
Complete Italian: The Basics (CD).......2006-01-29
This is a great way to learn since I spend a lot of time in the car.

Living Language course rules!.......2006-12-23
I've used Living Language courses since high school. My opinion is that they are overall the finest way to be introduced to a foreign language.
They use sentences grouped by grammatical function so that one learns (unconsciously) the grammar along with the vocabulary. There also is supplementary grammar if one wants to dig more into the machinery of the language.
I still benefit from having had my first introduction to Spanish from these courses. Now, having decided to review my univerisity French, I find this is still the finest CD on learning basic French.
Recommended.
A good tool for those with some background in French.......2006-01-09
I have been using Beyond the Basics French for about a week and I've found it very useful--it is definitely worth the time and money. It is not for someone with no background (hence, their "The Basics" I'm guessing). In grad school I had twelve hours or French (six studying abroad in France) and this course has been not only a good review but has built my vocab and, thank god, explained some grammatical/idiomatic stuff that I'm sure we covered in class but that didn't quite click with me b/c I'm not wonderfully adept at learning a new language.
If you've had at least 101-102 French, you should be fine with this. My only complaint is that some conversations aren't spoken slowly enough for me, but putting this on your iPod or mp3 makes it easy to back up a little be as often as you need to.
If you don't have a great intro/intermediate French dictionary, Harper Collins' French Beginner's Dictionary is the best I've found.

A book from the pre-wordprocessor era.......2007-09-05
The general evaluation of the book:
A good self-study material for those who have already had a course covering the basics. Or for those who are so-called false starters.
However, from book editing viewpoint, the book is a nightmare:
1. No active page headings, on the top of each page you have only the title of the book, which makes it a little difficult to locate something specific quickly.
2. Headings on a page are mostly inconspicuous, so you need to look carefully where you are inside a lesson.
3. Perhaps the book is too grammar centered, which is reflected in putting the grammar into the book twice, once inside the units and once at the back. Probably a shorter and tabular description inside the unit and a reference to the grammar summary at the back could have saved some space for some extra material.
All the lessons have the same structure:
1. A long conversation with English translation after each turn
2. Usage notes to expressions and structures in the conversation
3. Culture Notes (in English)
4. Grammar and Usage (the book has a thorough grammar curriculum) (a very long section)
5. Exercises (surprisingly short compared to the previous section)
6. Key to the exercises
What can you find at the back of the book?
1. an 83-page grammar review
2. a 10-page-long guide to letters, e-mails and internet resources
3. the rules of the 1998 German Spelling Reform (2 pages)
4. a short index (2 pages)
What's on the CDs?
1. Each conversation of the book (fast, natural speech speed)
2. Each conversation again but broken up into easily repeatable chunks to help you learn the language while in a car, or cooking in the kitchen or pottering in the garden
Some positive and negative features of the mini dictionary included in the package:
+ it's small enough to carry around anywhere
- one with weak eyes may need to buy a magnifying glass to be able to read the minuscule letters
+ It highlights the most common words, using all capitals, and lists some useful expressions with them.
- it does not have any grammatical information to the words (e.g. plurals to nouns, irregular forms to strong verbs, etc.)
Useful and affordable .......2006-01-31
This new series is perfect for anyone who has been "dabbling" in a language and is interested in "finding their voice" so to speak. There are 4 cds with 5 scripted dialogues on each. First you just listen, than it is repeated with time beween each phrase for you to repeat. Each lesson is followed by "Grammer and Usage" where you repeat more sentences. Nowhere but in the book are translations and clarification found.
The format can be challenging at first, because being a beginner you won't understand much. You have to read the book and be persistant to make it work. It really forces you to start listening and understanding dialogues in normal speaking pace.

Customer Reviews:
CD and Book don't match!.......2001-02-08
Although this course certainly gets you started in learning Italian, it, by no means, should be used alone. Other books, studied in tandem, are absolutely necessary. This course barely covers grammar basics, except for an extremely brief overview at the end. Most annoyingly, however, is that there are several instances when the CD and the book don't match. Sometimes words and even sentences are omitted from either the CD or the book. One example even had the wrong verb conjugation! In one instance -- lesson 39 -- the entire lesson is completely different on the CD. In other lessons, the same words and phrases are repeated ad nauseum. So, even though I can put together a simple conversation, this CD set is not enough to really learn the language. Perhaps, it's intended that way...so you buy the intermediate set next.
No English translation on tapes.......2001-01-14
While the content and format of the course is well done, the main complaint that I have about this course is that there is no English translation on the audio cassettes. You can NOT utilize the tapes without the accompaniment of the book. You must read along in the book to understand the audio lesson, therefore, this course is not ideal for someone who is planning on learning Italian in the car.
Too Involved.......2000-08-16
I found the course to be very comprehensive, but a little too involved for someone who wants to get quickly familiar with language and does not want to look at the written text while hearing the CDs or tapes. For example, I would not recommend it for learning the basics of language while driving, which I have been able to do with Berlitz. The recording is strictly in Italiano, no English except for chapter headings. Bummer!
Essential Italian for Travelers.......2000-05-09
While I am still unable to carry on lengthy conversations in Italian, this course did help me to ask questions and, more importantly, understand the replies while on a recent trip to Italy. A word of caution -- this course won't help you read an Italian menu, so if you don't like tripe, learn the word for that before you go. My only complaint is that, in a few places, the CD and the text did not match. This is a minor complaint considering the cost of the series and its overall effectiveness. Definitely worth the expense if you need to take a crash course before you fly...
Effective learning tool to study Italian.......1999-11-08
I used this book/CD to study Italian before a trip to Italy. I only completed the first 14 lessons (one of the 3 CD's.) I was able to make myself understood and knew all of the basics. I didn't study enough to be able to understand the replies! I wish I had done more, but recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Good deal.......2007-04-28
I just completed the Living Language Italian and it's one of the best courses I have ever used. The fact that there was no English on the CDs forced me to examine all of the words and understand the grammar. This process made subsequent lessons easier. I also liked the pace at which it moved. I agree that the quizzes were a bit thin, so I made up my own. Next it's the Ultimate Italian. Rome here I come!
One big thing overlooked here .......2005-06-05
and that is the whole point of learning another language is memorization. Since we're so accustomed to speaking English and we learned the finer points of it so long ago in elementary school, we forgot that we had to memorize the parts of speech and learn different expressions. The same is true for learning another language.
I can dig what the majority of folks here complain about the series not putting any of your new knowledge to practice - the second most important part of learning a language (if not tied for most important).
The Living Language series is a starter course, designed to give beginners the basics of the language - the alphabet, foreign letters in that language's alphabet (the letters j, k, x, w, and y are not part of the Italian alphabet), cognates (similar words in Italian and English), everyday expressions, and so on.
I wouldn't recommend the Living Language series as the be all and end all of language instruction. It is one of the cheapest programs on the bookshelf and the final product is a reflection of that.
The best bet to learning a language is going to the local community college (if you have the money and the time) and taking a course there, although those are more inclined to be immersion courses (where the instructor's idea of learning a language is for you to hear it spoken and learn it as you go along) or you could go to your local Italian cultural society and see what they have to offer (Philadelphia, for instance, has the America-Italy Society which offers Italian language classes. The Sons of Italy, at least in these parts, do not offer such).
Learning another language is not the same for everyone. What works for some may not work for others.
I've used this course and learned a lot.......2004-12-28
I wanted to impress my boyfriend who speaks Italian (as does his family) so I purchased this course and started studying. After a couple of weeks, I surprised him by suddenly speaking Italian. He was very impressed with how much I had learned. His family has also been impressed with my Italian. I have never studied Italian with any other course (except a little bit of an online one) so I really can't compare it, but I think this course is easy to learn from and I feel that I learned a lot from it. I don't speak a lot of Italian but I can say quite a bit and can often communicate in Italian with my boyfriend about every day things like the time or things like that. I would recommend it to those learning Italian.
Some others who have reviewed mentioned that there is no English translation on the cds for the Italian words and that is true. I actually found that helpful because I could quiz myself using the cds by trying to think of the word in English when they said it in Italian.
Unstructured course with long vocabulary lists.......2004-11-26
This course boasts of teaching 20,000 words, phrases and expressions. Maybe, I did not count. I did notice, however, that the course has neither structure, nor logic, nor exercises.
It consists of 3 CDs, one dictionary and a coursebook. Each word in the coursebook is spoken on the CD. All speakers seem to be native Italians. Sounds perfect, doesn't it? The problem is, that for beginning learners this 40-lesson course is pretty useless.
The first 2 lessons consist of long lists of names of people, cities, countries, Italian words that are similar to English words, the letters of the alphabet etc, all without sentences or context. Just long lists. Lessons 3 and 4 bring words for each of the vowels and consonants. Lesson five counts from 1 to 10, and has another set of lists for days, months, seasons etc. None of these words are used in sentences. Lesson six starts with sentences and explains some grammar, but again you just memorize long lists such as 8 different ways of saying good-bye, or 8 ways of saying nice-to-meet-you. Although those words will be very useful, should you ever get to memorize them out of context, the order in which they appear does not make sense at all. For example, in lesson 10 you learn in this order: the book is red, she is young, ice is cold, he is intelligent, it's me, I am Italian, what is it made of, it is silver, whose is this, the book belongs to Mr. Rossi, it is one o'clock. Etc, etc. Although at the beginning of this lesson you learned all forms of "to be" (I am, you are, etc.), the sentences deal with "is" only.
The course is not organized into topics and has no exercises, only a pretty useless quiz at the end of each chapter. The quiz consists of a few questions and the correct answers. All you need to do is match them correctly. All in all, the book will suit only people who love to memorize long lists of words and sentences. Too bad.
CD contains no English.......2004-09-16
Fortunately, I checked this one out of the library before buying it. I was expecting some CD's with translations so I can bring with me when I commute to work. The CD's contain Italian only phrases with no translations. You'll be lost without the course book. Not what I was expecting.
