The Collins Robert French Unabridged Dictionary gives you comprehensive coverage of both French and English and the most up-to-date business, political, and technical terms. Native French and English speakers worked side by side to create a balanced treatment of both languages and to make authentic and appropriate translations.
Most consistently updated. This edition has been extensively revised and updated to cover all the vocabulary of today's French, including new phrases and indicators. In addition, this Unabridged edition includes exhaustive coverage of key works, and full treatment of irregular forms of verbs, nouns, and adjectives to create the most complete and accurate picture of real language available today.
More colloquial usage than any other French dictionary. With its emphasis on current French and English, both written and spoken, including all areas of modern life and featuring regional usage, the dictionary gives you the edge in finding the correct translation.
Customer Reviews:
mon bébé the robert collins unabridged dictionary .......2007-10-18
i love this dictionary! only had it a month but yet to find a definition not in it(excepting the occasional very exotique gros mot) . the phrases and idioms i find especially useful for giving the right context to the word. it is complete and i can't see myself EVER having to upgrade. if you want a totally thorough and definitive reference that is also very current and that will last you many years this is the one to get!
The best French-English dictionary.......2007-09-02
When I found that my "student" dictionary lacked even the most basic cooking terms, I decided that I needed a really good French-English dictionary. So, I visited bookstores (in London, where the selection is better) and previewed every French-English dictionary I could find. The Collins Robert Unabridged 8th edition was the absolute best. Then, all I had to do was wait for the 8th edition to be published in the U.S. and eventually it was.
It is almost misleading to call this just a dictionary, given that the entries are so complete and the usage notes so numerous. Example: The entry for the verb "faire" runs about 39 column inches! The formatting (e.g., the judicious use of color and bold font) also makes this dictionary a joy to use. The only bad thing I have to say about this dictionary is that the version published for the U.S. market has a rather cheap, nonsubstantial binding. But since it's too big to carry around anyway, that's a minor flaw. If you need a good French-English dictionary, look no further -- this is the one.
Content superior to the cover, however........2007-02-21
I finally bought a real French-English dictionary, the Collins Robert is a treat after having struggled with a half-dozen paperback dictionaries over the years. After some significant online research, the purchase of the Collins Robert has proved to be an excellent choice. The sheer volume of translations is more than I'm used to -- and the format is pleasing, and it's, of course, very resourceful. As I look up words I can choose to dig in as much as I want, to sharpen my understanding, or not -- I read French every day, and the Collins Robert is the perfect companion. Only one minor problem, the publisher economized on the binding, which is more suited for a book half the size. Fortunately, in this case, you cannot judge this book by its cover - I recommend this dictionary for its content, not its cover.

wonderful.......2006-11-10
This dictionary has every word possible (well, a good amount anyway). lol. Definetly a great purchase.
Not the Last French Dictionnary You'll Ever Buy.......2006-07-17
Although I cannot begrudge this fine dictionary that fifth star, it doesn't come close to reaching the bar set by the word "unabridged" when applied to English dictionaries. As others have noted, this is ideal as a dictionary of first resort. That said, for a dictionary whose cover boasts "Thousands of...Technical...Terms," I still find myself returning to my HARRAP'S NEW COLLEGIATE for such things as botanical names, culinary terms, and the like. What's more, the tiny LAROUSSE DE POCHE is still a much better authority on the French/English cognates. Still, the ROBERT will almost supplant those half-dozen books of French slang you have beaten to death, and it is unparalleled in its organization. You can't beat the price, and if you spend any time reading in French or listening to French, it is easily the best bargain out there. Just don't throw away your other dictionaries.
A five star dictionary alone--but not as an upgrade.......2006-03-15
I think this is the best single-volume, bilingual dictionary available for French and English. However, one word of warning, if you already own the sixth edition of this work, do not think you're getting much in purchasing the seventh. Every section has an identical number of pages. Really, the only updates you're getting (other than corrections) are a few words inserted here and there--not enough to change the total page count of any particular section. For instance, I found the new terms "weblog" and "webmail" (although "blog" was not included) in comparing one page between the sixth and seventh editions. So if you already own the sixth edition, realize that you will get very little more in upgrading to the seventh. For this reason, I'm thinking of returning it. One nice change, however, is that the seventh edition does not have the fairly useless thumb index and has a plain edge.
That being said, in comparison with the Larousse and Harrap's single-volume, bilingual dictionaries, I definitely think this one is the richest in terms of defining real usage. I keep Larousse as a backup and have dispensed with my Harrap's all together.
Excellent work.......2006-01-30
While it is certainly impossible for a dictionary to be completely up-to-date and 100% comprehensive, this dictionary is very close. It is a great primary dictionary and can almost stand alone without a backup dictionary. No translator should be without it. And the price is phenomenal for the value.

The best size/content spanish-english dictionary I've found........2007-03-30
I love this dictionary because it is small enough to keep in a backpack, but has enough content to be useful all by itself. It shows you how to conjugate regular -ar, -er, and -ir verbs with three model verbs, and then notifies you within the dictionary if verbs are irregular; if they are, they will be in the middle of the dictionary along with the model verbs mentioned earlier. All-in-all, it's excellent for College Spanish I, II, and probably III ane beyond, though I am only in Spanish I.

the best little dictionary.......2000-11-21
I have had this dictionary for four years and it has never failed me. I only need search my big dictionary for the most obscure words. It is very easy to read and has the french equivalent of every form of the word, including adverbs and adjectives. It also has "keywords" that can take up a whole page showing all the different meanings in certain sentences. I have gone from beginner to fluent and this dictionary has helped me the whole way and will continue to.
Very useable.......2000-06-19
My sister recommended this book on the basis of the equally good Portugese version. I bought her a copy and then promptly used it myself. It is not a full reference work but a very useful carry-in-the-bag issue. Translations are more than adequate and although my French is beginner level I was easily able to cope. I have a more extensive dictionary as well but very rarely use it as the Cassel Gem so far has been very thorough and certainly covered the vocabulary and phrasing that I have come across and/or used.

Best French English Dictionary Around.......2006-02-28
My friend bought this dictionary before we left to study in France for 3 1/2 months. I loved it so much for the accuracy of current French words that the French actually use that I bought it when I returned. I know two other people who went and bought this dictionary as well because it was so good. It also has a useful grammar section in the back for quick reference.
Great for French Students.......2005-09-30
This dictionary is awesome for French students of all levels. Detailed definitions. Helpful grammar section in the end. Blips of cultural info scattered here and there. A must-have for all French lovers!
The Excellent 2004 3rd Edition is Plenty Sturdy.......2005-02-02
[I just discovered, on looking into it, that Amazon also sells an earlier edition. I'd suggest you avoid that one for reasons outlined below. In fact, this review is appearing with BOTH the current and the old edition. Look above and make sure you are looking at info about the 3RD EDITION published in 2004, not earlier. If it is not, look for it. Some of the negative reviews included here for the THIRD edition were actually written about the earlier, inferior edition.]
Earlier reviewers have complained that what must have been an earlier edition was falling apart after some months use. I have a 2004 edition (the 3rd edition) and am not experiencing that problem at all. I wonder if Harper Collins got complaints and changed the paper and binding used. Whether or not that is the case, I can attest that my copy, used a fair amount, is standing up well.
The dictionary itself is reasonably complete for a 'concise' volume. It contains 877 pages of dictionary proper, and then at the back there is another section of 255 pages that goes into some detail on issues of grammar - always an concern with non-French speakers/readers - and usage.
In the main body of the dictionary there are occasional sidebars that explain some otherwise confusing words. An example picked at random: "'Beur' is a term used to refer to a person born in France of North African immigrant parents. It is not racist and is often used by the media, anti-racist groups and second-generation North Africans themselves. It comes from back-slang, or 'verlan.'" [A separate note explains what 'verlan' is, but I won't go into that here.]
I'm reasonably fluent in French and find that those words and phrases I DO know are well-translated here. But there are plenty of words and phrases included that were new to me, always a good thing to discover. Also, the pronunciation guide is fairly good at finding English equivalents for French sounds.
I can recommend this edition wholeheartedly.
Scott Morrison
pourquoi ne l'aimez-vous pas alors?.......2001-12-13
I own this Dictionary, and it is my second french dic. after the Collins Gem pocket one. This dic. is complete enough to satisfy all the words I need to look up, was a great grammar section, tells usage and examples of important words and has cultural highlights. To refuke what the other reviews say, I've had mine for a year, I use it often, and her spine and pages are still well intact. Maybe I was lucky, but mine is used and no where close to falling apart. Ça me semble que vous avez un peu de mal change là, n'est-ce pas?
Incredibly useful.......2001-09-11
For me this dictionary has it all. It has useful usage guides for most of the words and the appendix which is quite large really breaks down the whole grammar structure and such with real ease that helps to flesh out the ideas and thoughts I want to express effectively.

Excellent Book.......2005-09-20
I took French in junior and high school (graduated over 22 years ago). Last spring, I started an immersion French class, which means the class is taught entirely in French. Since I was too "chicken" to take a placement test, I decided to start at level 1. I purchased this dictionary to assist me in remembering the basics.
In addition to being a dictionary, this book has a review of basic concepts. I find this dictionary to be very helpful in my endeavor to be fluent 'en français'.

Excellent and compact for on-the-go travelers..........2005-02-15
If your plan is to buy a dictionary for studying French, I would buy something a little bit more thorough, but the Collins Gem is the perfect size for taking on a trip (tiny!) and is the best on the market in this class... during my travels in France, Belgium and Morocco, it was a great aid, and I even found lots of unusual words that i didn't expect of a dictionary like this (including some colloquial words that a lot of dictionaries just leave out due to academic snobbery, but which are essential for basic understanding)... The size is unbeatable since it will even fit in your pocket, the pronunciation guide is perfect, and verbs are given in a table that is sufficient for travel use...what else could you ask of such a small little dictionary that no one will notice as you backpack around or hit the town with 20 million other travel items in your pocket!

Five star dictionary, one star shipping.......2004-02-17
I think this is a great dictionary, but if you decide to order it be aware that Amazon seems to have particular difficulty in shipping it, or perhaps their copies are damaged. I say this because the first copy I received from Amazon had split bindings. Imagine opening the front cover and razoring the seam between the cover and the binding. Repeat the process inside the back cover. Amazon was very nice about letting me replace it: they shipped a replacement copy the next day, UPS picked up the damaged one, no charge for anything.
Unfortunately, the replacement copy arrived in EXACTLY the same state. That had to go back as well. So you should get a copy, but it make take a few tries before you get one in usable condition.
Good dictionary - misleading description.......2003-05-20
Dictionary comparable in scope to the Oxford-Hachette.
I just wanted to point out that while Oxford-Hachette and Larousse list Entries and Translations separately in their blurbs, HarperCollins lumps them together to make it appear as though they have more than twice as many entries. This is intentionally misleading. For this reason alone I'm putting my money into the Oxford-Hachette.
FWIW, this dictionary appears to be the same as the "Collins Robert Unabridged French to English and English to French Dictionary" merely by a different publisher and for half the price.
