you've got to get this book.
Whenever a guy wants to learn a foreign language, he wants to learn the "dirty" words. This books deals with those words, but it's NOT limited to just "dirty" words. Instead, it's more of an updated and real world Spanish phrase / slang book that covers the following subjects:
1. Basic Expressions or "How to say hello without sounding geeky"
2. from Hooking Up to Breaking Up
3. Love and Sex
4. Gay and Lesbian Life
5. Sports and Games
6. Shopping
7. Fashion
8. Body
9. Technology
10. Gossip
11. Food
12. Partying
13. Entertainment
14. Gestures
If you travel to different Spanish speaking countries, the book identifies the words and phrases / slangs that have unique meaning in certain countries, e.g. the word "coger."
If you're a sports fan and you like to attend sporting events, this book explains what the fans are chanting. Words that you won't find in any Spanish dictionary or phrase book.
If you're a female, I strongly recommend this book. When I was traveling through Peru, I meet a woman from Switzerland who was backpacking alone through South America for 6 months. Being alone, she was being harassed by men. A Peruvian woman took pity on her and helped her develop a list of words and phrases to tell guys to leave her alone. She showed me that list. Many of the words and phrases on that list can be found in this book. I think she would have benefited from having this book in her travel.

I personally refrain from using foul language and I'm not impressed with those that do, but the use of foul language is a fact of life even in Spanish speaking countries. You don't have to use it, but you should be able to recognize it especially if it's being directed at you. In the case of the Swiss woman who was traveling alone, her usage of insult and profanity to ward off unwanted attention may have been her only defense when confronted with a harasser.
One final thing. . . this is not a comprehensive book. I'm familiar with a few common Mexican slang / insult words and those words aren't found in this book. Perhaps Berlitz is going to come out with a "Hide This Mexican Spanish Book"?

As a teacher, I love this workbook because the students are completely engaged, they love the book and the variety of activities it offers. I haven't found many mistakes in this book as I have in others that are just impossible to use. Great book!
Very Nice Spanish Workbook.......2007-01-08
I bought this to help me with understanding and working with Spanish better. It is a good basic workbook, the exercises aren't easy nor are they hard. Just difficult enough to get your mind working and think in Espanol. I look forward to purchasing the other workbooks in the series.
Better than the book I used in college!.......2001-09-16
I just got this and the intermediate book that follows this one. they are both amazing. Perhaps the other reviewer had an earlier edition without an answer guide for mine has one. One word of warning, this book does not stand alone, but is better used with either classes or a self-teaching audio package or cd-rom. I really wish Berlitz comes out with an advanced book to finnish off the set.
Hard for the beginner.......2001-01-23
This book is a well done workbook except for the fact that there are no answers in the book. This book works only if used in a class situation where you can have an instructor to assist you.

Good for phrasal learning!.......2006-02-21
If you would like to learn some phrases in Spanish by themes, this is great because it has the phonetic spellings under each and every phrase. It progresses logically from one subject to the next, and is a very LARGE book.
If you're like most of my Spanish students and want to know the WHY behind phrases, this should be used more as a supplement. I would use this only for older teens and college to adults. Younger children need something more interactive like Flip Flop Spanish.

This is a great book for complete beginners. I don't know any spanish and was surprised how much I've learned in just a few days. Granted, you won't learn to speak it properly on this book alone(hardly any grammar here) but none the less, I highly recommend it.
Great for learning the everyday language.......2002-12-12
This book is excellent for learning everyday Spanish. How much you get out of it, depends on your motivation. You have to practice and learn to understand the language. Just memorizing the phrases is not good enough if you want to be fluent in Spanish. Use the book to make up sentences of your own.
This book along with Berlitz Essential Spanish are the best books for learning Spanish.
Excellent book for pronunciation.......2002-04-03
I have used this book to learn Spanish and I returned to my new Spanish home and my native speaking friends saw clearly I had improved. I have shared Paso a Paso Ingles to help them learn English. The pronuciation help is the best and for a beginner it literally spells it all out. You learn what speaking really means and the distinction between reading, writing, understanding and then speaking. The book is only effective if it is read outloud. I drove my family crazy!! I have read it outloud again and again because it really is a good system to get your mouth moving around the words the way they do!! I speak very well now and I owe most of it to Mr. Berlitz!!!

This word and phrase book is an incredibly useful resource perfect for anyone traveling to Spain (there is another Berlitz guide to Latin America). The words and phrases are listed first in English (in normal print) and then in Spanish (in bold) with pronunciations. This layout is very eye catching and user friendly. Berlitz has divided the book into eight different sections, which are color coded for easy access.
Part 1 contains basic expressions and information on accommodations. Here you can find a guide to pronunciation, important words for non-specialized conversation, and general expressions. This section also has important words and phrases for securing and enjoying your accommodations (hotels, camping, etc.). Part 2 contains phrases, questions, and other important terms related to dining. Here you discover how to order, pay, complain, and select drinks. This area also includes a 10+ page "menu dictionary," which lists words necessary to get exactly what you want at a restaurant (e.g. rhubarb=ruibarbo). Part 3 relates specifically to travel including airplanes, trains, cars, gas stations, passports, emergencies, street signs, and rentals. It even includes a detailed, illustrated list of car, bicycle, and motorcycle parts in Spanish in case you break down. Part 4 has words and phrases related to sightseeing. Whether visiting the beach or the theater or anything in between, you will always know what to say and ask (such as: where can I get tickets?). This part also has phrases for meeting people. If you are going to Spain to meet a special someone, this book will help you make chitchat, invite that someone on a date, call him or her back, etc. Part 5 includes information on stores and services including words and phrases relating to banks, groceries, pharmacies, clothing, souvenirs, jewelry, toys, photography, and even how to contact the police. Part 6 contains words and phrases concerning health issues: e.g. dentists, opticians, insurance, symptoms, a list of body parts and other important things. Part 7 is a mini-dictionary consisting of commonly used words. Part 8 is a general reference section. Here you find a dictionary of written Spanish (e.g. on maps, storefronts, etc.), numbers, dates, times, holidays, a map and other general words and phrases of interest. This part also includes phone numbers for the US consulates and embassies.
I should add a disclaimer. This book will be most useful for those who already have at least a basic grasp of the Spanish language. It is not a Spanish textbook or a complete dictionary (although it has a basic one). Also, this book is not a travel guide. It does contain some basic travel information and advice (meant to be used in conjunction with the words and phrases), but not very much. Although it barely fits in my pocket, it is small enough not to be a nuisance. Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Spain. The size and wealth of information (224 pages), as well as the low price, combine to make this an indispensable resource.

This book is a good introduction to Castillian Spanish as spoken in Spain. Gramatically it is disappointing as it only covers in any depth the present, preterite (past),and future tenses. There are in total fifteen verb tenses, including another past tense,the imperfect. The other tenses including the emotion rich subjunctive are barely covered! !Qué lastima!(What a shame!)
A great book to get a good start on Spanish.......1999-01-09
I found this book an excellent way to get started in Spanish. Each lesson takes you through a conversation, illustrating a grammatical point (and teaching you vocubulary along the way). The grammar is illustrated through the conversation first, then certain grammatical rules are pointed out. This way, one can learn Spanish the way one usually learns their own native language; specifically, by hearing the sentence structure over and over again and "absorbing" the rules.
However, be warned that the pronunciations provided in the book are characteristic of Spanish as spoken in Spain, and not Latin American pronunciations. I think this book works best if practiced along with a audio tape.
The only other complaint is that the present tense is studied for the first two-thirds of the book. Then in the last third of the book, they cover three additional tenses very quickly. But, I still think it is a good book to get started in Spanish.

El Libro es terrible........2002-08-22
If you're doing anything more than going to Mexico on a standard week or less american vacation package THIS BOOK PROBABLY WILL DISAPPOINT YOU.
I bought this phrase book based on a review. Don't make the same mistake. Check it out thoroughly to see if it will work for you.
My biggest criticism is with the dictionary and index sections. They are miserably incomplete listing only about 10-15% of the words actually found in the book. To find a word or phrase knowing either an english or spanish word is nearly impossible. You have to know which section of the book it appears in and go to any number of mini-dictionaries within these sections.
One has to memorize the book to know where to find the various phrases. Typically by the time they're found they're no longer needed.
The book appears to drawn from a european spanish version as several pages still have references to europe. What has been changed is clearly geared solely toward Mexico.
BELIEVE IT OR NOT:
In the medical section, it contains no phrase regarding diahrea or bowel problems!! Nonetheless you can find language relating to water-skiing and toboganning.
Certainly there are much better phrase books on the market.
My advice:
1) Look for a phrase book with a THOROUGH DICTIONARY AND INDEX.
2) Think of a simple question you might have while travelling; If you can't find the words to form the question within a few minutes it's probably a worthless phrasebook.
3) Think about the answers you'll be getting to your questions. Will you be able to look up what's been said to translate them?
The best of them all........2000-05-17
My parents used this when they visited me in Mexico for the first time and were delighted by its ease-of-use, page edges color coded by topic categories for quick look up, and the phonetic spelling pronuciation printed below the spanish phrase. By far the best for novice speakers of Spanish. The rest are pale imitators.
