Book Description
Authoring a Ph.D. Thesis involves having creative ideas, working out how to organize them, writing up from plans, upgrading text, and finishing it speedily and to a good standard. It also involves being examined and getting work published. This book provides a huge range of ideas and suggestions to help Ph.D. candidates cope with both the intellectual issues involved and the practical difficulties of organizing their work effectively.

Invaluable!.......2006-01-06
I just defended successfully (yay!), after a serious revision, and this book was my guiding light. In all honesty I could have saved myself some serious time if I'd paid more attention to it sooner. It was particularly inspiring when I was first starting to get down on paper my first chapter... I think for anyone in that horrible phase where you have to much research and feel that you've lost your argument the book is an enormous blessing. It demonstrates how to structure a chapter, how to keep it readable, how to break down sections... It was truly my bible.
It also lays out the differences between British and US models, which is interesting to know for future reference.
Not a word that is merely psychobabble or self-help, but a straightforward and clear manual.
Excellent Guide.......2005-07-14
This book is an excellent guide for anyone in the process of writing a dissertation. Although he is writing from a British point of view, he takes care to make his advice applicable to the dissertation writer in the US university system as well. He discusses structure, drafting, editing, as well as how to prepare the diss for eventual publication.
The main achievement of this book is the idea that the dissertation writer is taking on another role, moving from *student writer* to *writer*. The dissertation propels the student into the position of colleague in training, and the writing is the vehicle for doing that. For the first time, thanks to this book, I have begun to look at myself as a writer contributing to the body of knowledge on the subject, not just a student producing yet another required paper to please a professor.
SAY IT ONCE AND SAY IT RIGHT .......2005-04-03
Authoring a PhD highlights lessons that I learned from Professor Dunleavy as a master's candidate at the London School of Economics. Several easy to understand but critical lessons are posed. First, superior organizational skill is key for any PhD student. This is initially conveyed through a seemingly trivial but ultimately useful example of how his study was organized as a proxy for the importance of precision and efficiency in structuring the PhD. Second, above all, persistence is important. In suggesting ways to "Keep the Faith" the PhD can be endured by sticking to the plan once it is developed, and trusting oneself to defend the research. Lastly, the pervasive tone of the book can be summed up as follows: "Say it once and Say it right" a mantra that Professor Dunleavy encouraged his student's to consider seriously and I have tried not always sucessfully to adhere to. These simple, yet straightforward messages that dominate the text, may be one of the reasons why, when I first tried to purchase the book at the 2003 American Political Science Association annual meeting, it was unavailable, having completely sold out. Happily, Amazon helped me resolve this particular dilemma so I could confront the critical real world issue of finishing my thesis.
Not for natural sciences.......2005-02-25
This book is mainly intended for the humanities and social sciences. I found the book rather hard to read. Long sentences and use of paranthesis is not really an effective style. Lots of text before the author comes to the interesting points. Who is interested in information like: "Most women like to give and recieve process-organized explanations, often running through the history of an event or an interaction from beginning to end in narrative succession. But most men prefer to recieve 'bottom-line' information first... Hence men easily get annoyed by what they code as women 'rabbiting on'." The author is surely not the one who gives bottom-line information first. He gives several comments like this one that are of no use when you want to know how to write a good thesis. The book is full of citations from writers and other smart people (which are highlighted), but the things you really want to know are hard to find without a lot of unnecessary reading. There are lots of books on scientific writing, just browse on and you'll surely find some better books.
My map through the maze of academic writing!.......2004-11-10
This book is an excellent guide to an under-addressed aspect of the PhD process: writing, structuring, and developing your thesis. The text fills a niche amongst all of the other `how to get your PhD' books out there, because it goes so far in depth into the authoring process.
Beginning to write your thesis is a daunting thing, and there seems to be a presumption that PhD students will know how to go about the whole procedure. But of course the process is complicated, intimidating, and not always clear-but this books provides an invaluable road map. Indeed it even offers guidance for after the thesis is finished, when you want to move on to publishing. Suddenly the impossible and mysterious looks reasonable and understandable. The book is full of clear guidelines and advice, useful tips, and wit which makes it very readable too. The text is structured according to the methods being recommended, which makes it very easy to read--and that makes you appreciate the soundness of what you are learning!
A book you will want to sit down and read cover-to-cover, and then keep on your shelf for regular referral back to throughout the entire PhD process!

Good, but missing something.......2004-09-02
This was good book that provides a framework for writing basic research papers. I hope that the next edition will have a section on graph or table presentations.
Review basing on the 1st edition.......2000-04-15
Even though I have not read this book, it should be an impropvement over the last editon. With an additional author, Cash Phyllis, in this second edition, this is a promising book. The 1st edition is simple, effective, and logically formatted. However, the unclear explanation of "Preparing the Documentation"(MLA + APA styles) may confused some readers. I hope this confusion was rectified in this 2nd editon. Overall, this is an exceptional reseaching manuel for high school + college students. The only thing stopped me from buying this book is that it was published before the publication of the "MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing" (April 1998). The "MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing" the the first book from MLA that contained the new MLA standards in documenting reseach paper especially online/ Internet documenting. To bad!
Great book to help you with papers!.......1998-08-23
This book totally helped me with my research papers. I would get it if you are in high school or collage. I would also get How to Write Short Stories!!

Customer Reviews:
A nice pep talk.......2006-10-31
If you want to know the structure of a purpose statement or research questions, or formats for a desertation, this is NOT the book for you. This is a pep talk on how swell it would be to write one, time management (which you should ALREADY be into) and cute and witty goody nice stuff. I was looking for examples and structure and theory. I can get all the time mgt stuff from my mentor. If you need a book to boost your morale, this could be the book for you. If you're looking for a book on the mechanics of writing a thesis this book is NOT for you. I wish I could get a refund. This book is that bad.
It's NOT well written and if you are already into this, you'll find the writing style too soft and yucky, like a coffee shop discussion; nice and cute converations, but no real substance.

Essential reading for doctoral students.......2006-03-07
Over the four years I spent working on my PhD, I must have read hundreds of papers and substantial parts of many books. In terms of the quality of the finished thesis, this little book was probably the most important. Lots of good, practical advice, even for an experienced writer: schedule a full re-read before giving it to the supervisor for review (they'll add more value if they're not fixing things you could fix yourself); re-write the introduction every six weeks; advice on how examiners read theses (and hence where to put the extra effort). The section on writing the conclusions was a big help in getting the job finished. The section devoted to effective use of word processors is probably redundant for most of us: but there are enough nuggets in the rest of the book to more than compensate. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it at the beginning instead of half-way through when a fellow student recommended it.
A Perfect Little Book.......2005-07-29
There is no question that all students need to go thru organizing and writing their thesis at some point during their academic period, and this perfect little book will help everyone, particularly PhD students. The book is very easy to read, follow, and comprehend. It has clear instructions and suggestions on how and what to do in order to deliver an outstanding thesis.
A light in the darkness.......2005-02-28
Many research students have laboured to produce their thesis not knowing quite what was expected of them. This small, clear, concise book steps the student through each section of the thesis. It explains why students should start writing almost straight away and that the old style of doing all the work then writing it all up is a hangover from pre-word processor days. It explains why the introduction is important and what should be in it. Same for the section on research method. In short, it explains what is required of your thesis over and above the obligation to describe your research.
It also settles the research student's doubts about the merits of their work by explaining what is expected of it.

Customer Reviews:
For a Research Paper, NOT a Thesis.......2000-07-13
The title of this book, "How to Write a Thesis," is so mislabeled, I think it's downright criminal. Rather than being about thesis writing, this book instructs the undergraduate how to write a research or term paper. Chapter One's title is, in fact, "So You Have a Research Paper to Write." I bought this to help me with a Master's thesis. That was a very bad mistake.
I don't even see much use for the undergraduate in this book. The good portion of the text is devoted to formatting. And, I seriously doubt any good professor would allow someone to format their paper from this.
Stay away from this one.
For High School/Undergrad Papers, Not a Graduate Thesis.......2000-05-11
Like other reviewers I thought this book would give me some useful pointers on writing my Masters thesis. The book is geared toward shorter research papers and essays perhaps for high school level. I found the techniques in the book to be outdated...it talks more about card catalogs than computer databases. Useful for the disorganized high school/undergrad student, but not what I expected.
Good for undergrads in community colleges.......2000-04-15
I bought this book to better my thesis, and sadly have to say my money was wasted. This book provides methods for looking up for bibliography in the library, writing methods etc., all of which someone who go to a graduate school should already know. As a metter of fact, it's the sort of stuff I've been tought in the first 6 weeks of my unergraduate degree, and I didn't go to an Ivy League Uni. Nevertheless, it could be very helpful for an undergrad who goes to a college which doesnt teach these basic techniques; Going to do their first term paper, etc. Also - you can get there a good summery of the Chicago method, ()
Misleading Title.......2000-02-08
The title implies that this is a book specifically about writing a thesis. Having purchased it for that purpose, I soon realized that it was not about writing a thesis at all but about writing research papers in general. In this regards, it was not useful to me at all. Further, there is no index so attempts to search for specific information pertinent to my needs were futile.
An excellent "how to" book!.......1999-05-27
As someone who works privately with students, helping them with theses, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with their thesis, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as a reference. As the title states, this is a "how to" book, and it does an excellent job of walking students through the process of writing a thesis. It is a practical and easy to use guide.
Customer Reviews:
Not useful for a graduate level thesis.......2007-02-03
This book may be useful for someone writing their first high school or undergraduate paper, but is not going to be useful to someone writing a graduate level thesis.
This book covers basic research methods (like how to find a book in a card catalog), directions on note taking, and a good portion of the book is devoted to citing resources and quotations in MLA and Chicago documentation styles. If you have had an academic background that required a lot of writing none of this information is going to be new to you. Additionally, these documentation styles can be freely researched on the internet for a quick refresher.
This book is also quite dated, pointing out that the final manuscript should be typed and not handwritten, and advises "The typewriter should be in good working order. The ribbon should retain a sufficient amount of ink for a uniformly clear imprint..." Surprising, considering this book's most recent edition was published in 2003.
Save your money.
if you want to write a good thesis.......2006-06-20
I just recently wrote my bachlor thesis, and when I was starting to get prepared I had no idea what to do or where to go, so I ordered this book. Wow, one of the better idea's I've had in a long time.
Overall the book was very well written and easy to understand, you get plenty of information from the start to the end. You get to learn how to make proper and organized notes in a way that later on when you get to the writing phase its so much easier. Honestly I used the book so much while writing my paper - it was so useful at ever step.
I am not one of those to use these kind of books, but this one I really think was so helpful and I recommend it to anyone who is about to write one of the most important papers of you student life.

Book Description
The senior thesis is the capstone of a college education, but writing one can be a daunting prospect. Students need to choose their own topic and select the right adviser. Then they need to work steadily for several months as they research, write, and manage a major independent project. Now there's a mentor to help. How to Write a BA Thesis is a practical, friendly guide written by Charles Lipson, an experienced professor who has guided hundreds of students through the thesis-writing process.
This book offers step-by-step advice on how to turn a vague idea into a clearly defined proposal, then a draft paper, and, ultimately, a polished thesis. Lipson also tackles issues beyond the classroom-from good work habits to coping with personal problems that interfere with research and writing.
Filled with examples and easy-to-use highlighted tips, the book also includes handy time schedules that show when to begin various tasks and how much time to spend on each. Convenient checklists remind students which steps need special attention, and a detailed appendix, filled with examples, shows how to use the three main citation systems in the humanities and social sciences: MLA, APA, and Chicago.
How to Write a BA Thesis will help students work more comfortably and effectively-on their own and with their advisers. Its clear guidelines and sensible advice make it the perfect text for thesis workshops. Students and their advisers will refer again and again to this invaluable resource. From choosing a topic to preparing the final paper, How to Write a BA Thesis helps students turn a daunting prospect into a remarkable achievement.

Good Meat but lots of Blah Blah.......2007-03-22
Not just for BA theses. If you're writing any long (20+ pages) research paper for college this is a good book for you. Grab a stack of post it notes; the nuggets are buried in a lot of not so useful "how to interact with your advisor/how the process works" stuff.
Remarcable work........2006-11-10
The book represents a very helpful insight into the work a faculty student should do in the final year to complete a thesis. It covers absolutely every corner you can think and even those you've never thought that could possibly be there. Lots of examples, full of great ideas, very clear, very coherent. It is a 100% outstanding purchase.
