5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2007-09-03

This book is a necessity for anyone learning Spanish. Conjugating verbs is one of the hardest things to learn. This book is very useful. It has translations and conjugations of verbs listed in alphabetical order. The beginning of the book has information and practice activities to help with verb conjugations. It also comes with a cd rom that has a couple activities to help you learn. They are not bad activities, but they are also not the best learning tool I have ever used. The book is well worth it though.

Book Description

The philosophy of this best-selling introductory text is to emphasize communicative proficiency. Based on the Natural Approach, the text stresses the use of activities in a natural and spontaneous classroom atmosphere. In this comprehension-based approach, the development of receptive skills —listening and reading— precedes and forms the basis for the development of the productive skills —speaking and writing. Dos mundos is designed so that class time can be devoted to exposing students to Spanish through the abundant activities and readings in the text, allowing the grammar explanations and exercises to be studied outside of class.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible for Beginners (No me gusta).......2006-09-11

If you have a choice, do not buy this book. If you must buy it for your class, seriously consider taking a different Spanish class that doesn't use this book.

This book is full of errors - typos, missing text and using words that haven't been taught yet. It goes on and on. This may be understandable for a 1st edition, but I'm referring to the 5th edition!

They also use a hard-to-read font (small and artsy-fartsy) on their illustrations. So when you see foreign words you can't tell if the word is Lan or Ian. That may seem picky, but when you're paying $200 for the book and workbooks, I expect better.

They also have CD's (they don't include videos for some reason), but it is painfully obvious that the CD's were produced for the ease of manufacturing, not teaching. If you plan on using these CD's while going through a chapter, you will find yourself constantly changing between 3 different CD's - because they don't layout the CD's according to the chapter. One part will be for cultural parts of the chapter, another for the vocabulary and another for the workbook exercises.

It did awake me to the different between Textbooks and what I'll call Free Market books. Textbooks, at least this one, doesn't have a reference section - putting all the numbers together, colors, etc.

Just look at the editorial description (above). It really says it all..."Dos mundos is designed so that class time can be devoted to exposing students to Spanish through the abundant activities and readings in the text, allowing the grammar explanations and exercises to be studied outside of class."

In other words, if you want to learn grammar and have it explained, don't use this book. Study it "outside of class." Why am I taking this class?

3 out of 5 stars A LONG WAIT FOR PRODUCT.......2005-09-04

I ordered this product on the 3rd of August via expedited (2 day)shipping and it did not get here until the 13th of August!! Class started here on the 15th. The product itself was as it stated, so I can not complain about that. I would not use this shipper unless you have plenty of time to wait.

1 out of 5 stars Unhappy.......2004-09-08

I was looking for a student workbook for practice in spanish. I ordered this book because it was listed as "like new",it took me almost three weeks to get it and when I did I found the worksheets for the first five chapters were cut out. I am now approaching my first term exam for those same chapters and have no book to review.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Spanish Resource I've ever Come Across.......2003-10-27

I think that "Dos Mundos" is an excellent resource for both teachers AND students. I disagree that study of the book needs to be accompanied by teacher instruction and supervision. The beauty of the text, in my opinion, is that it makes self-teaching very easy. The grammar section at the back of each chapter is clearly explained in English, and there is a complete vocabulary list at the end of each chapter.

The other beauty of the book is that it creates the closest thing to language immerson that you can get out of a book. There are many articles from Spanish-speakers, written in very natural Spanish.

As for the person upset about the Mexican Spanish, I can't say that I agree with you. I was pleasantly surprised because the book actually has samplings of the language from all over the Spanish world. But in order to avoid confusion (which would make sense), they stuck to one main form of Spanish - Spain Spanish.

I recommend this book for ANYONE - teacher and students (from beginner level write up to the advanced learner)

3 out of 5 stars World Language.......2003-03-30

to the reviewer who says that every Spanish textbook should emphasize Mexican Spanish, there are many other countries other than Mexico that speak Spanish. It is pure linguistic chauvinism to state that vosotros shouldn't be taught. I also think 'vos' as used in Central American and the River Plate region should also be introduced in beginning Spanish classes. Limiting the accents that are offered and by refining the text as though Mexico were the only country potential Spanish speaker will visit is short-sighted and small-minded at best. The text is not meant to be used on an autodidactic basis.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Verb Tenses workbook is great!.......2007-10-12

This workbook is the best spanish aid that I've used. A person just can't communicate with just nouns and adjectives. They need a good working knowledge of verbs. This book takes you through the tenses, and spends 79 pages on just the present tense, working through all the irregulars, stem-changing verbs, etc. There are a total of 226 pages of workbook-type work, then some appendices, spanish-english glossary, and the answer key. The last page is 305. About every 6-7 pages is a paragraph to translate into spanish. It makes a person think. One thing about this book is that even though there is a small english-spanish dictionary in the back, you'll need another bigger dictionary, since many words are not in their dictionary. This is a great investment. I would buy it again, knowing what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-11

This is an excellent book. Lots of great information, written in an easy to understand format.I just finished a class on spanish, and only after reading this book, and doing the excercises am I starting to really understand.

As Spanish verb resources go, Practice Makes Perfect is almost as good as
Christopher Kendris's 501 Spanish Verbs.
When you have to go to Mexico on business, with no knowledge of Spanish at all, and with just two weeks to learn to speak the language, you do whatever you can to learn.
I bought and tried everything, including this book. It is good and I learned a lot from it.
My best results in verbs and expecially in learning to speak and understand the language came from Behind the Wheel Spanish by Language Dynamics. Great course.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

5 out of 5 stars How I am successfully using this book to become more conversational in Spanish? .......2007-06-25

This book is fantastic for teaching Spanish grammar for verb tenses. It goes great with a Spanish verb conjugation book such as 501 Spanish verbs. One of the most interesting things about this book is the vocabulary that you will learn. I was only expecting to learn how to conjugate verbs with this book. But I learned Spanish verb conjugation and so many new vocabulary words that I was able to put to use almost immediately with Spanish speakers. The exercises were also fun to do, and I never felt bored when studying with this book.

Many people say that you should first learn how to speak the language and reach an intermediate conversational level before attempting to study the grammar from a book. I disagree. I have used this book with my favorite Spanish course, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and I am very happy with the progress that I have made. And I feel that this book has helped me to develop a better understanding of "why" sentences are said the way that they are in Spanish. Learning Spanish Like Crazy is probably the best self-study course for learning authentic Spanish from this side of the Atlantic, but it left me with certain questions about using Spanish verbs. But I have been able to use this book to successfully fill in those gaps and become more conversational. If you are truly serious about speaking fluent Spanish, then you'll want to order this book.

4 out of 5 stars Big Red Book is Big Help.......2007-07-09

I love this book, over 500 verbs fully conjugated. The help in my learning Spanish has been invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars It's the best I've seen - here's another reason why.......2006-04-16

in addition to the advantages that others have pointed out, such as the examples provided, there is another plus which I don't think anyone else has mentioned. The book gives examples not only of the verb in use, but also of nouns and vocab that are related to the verb in question. So for example, for the word 'Anadir' (which means 'to add'), the book gives sample sentences containing the phrase 'por anadidura' (in addition:') and the noun 'anadido' (addition). These supporting phrases and vocab are every bit as important as learning to conjugate the root verb itself, and I have yet to find a verb book that does this in its sample sentences.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, very helpful!.......2006-03-01

This book was recommended to me by my Spanish Teacher and it is a really good resource to use while learning Spanish or just to use for reference. I recommend the 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs to all interested in Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Side-By-Side Comparison of 501 Spanish Verbs vs. The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs (555) .......2006-02-22

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning Spanish courses, books, and software that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker and a professional private Spanish instructor.

At first glance, it seems that Big Red 555 has 54 more fully conjugated verbs than 501. But Big Red 555 actually has about 2,300 more verbs than 501. That's because Big Red 555 has a Spanish Verb Index with more than 2,300 verbs that are cross-referenced to the page number to another verb in Big Red 555 that follows the same conjugation pattern. If we judged the books solely on the number of the verbs that each book contains, Big Red 555 would clearly be the winner.

Another section that I liked about Big Red 555 is that it contains a section with the Top 50 Verbs. These Top 50 Verbs which were selected on frequency of use are also cross-referenced to the page number in Big Red 555 where you will find the same verb fully conjugated. This section can be very helpful because it is unlikely that a reader will study the entire 500 plus verbs of either book. But a reader may study and practice the Top 50 most commonly used verbs and learn how to conjugate them.

Perhaps the feature that makes Big Red 555 standout from 501 is that in the "555 Fully Conjugated Verbs" section, the former tends to give more examples of uses and expressions of the verbs than you would find in the latter.

But in order to learn proper verb conjugation it takes lots of study and practice. 501 provides the reader with close to 50 pages of "Verb Drills and Test With Answers." On the other hand, Big Red 555 only had 5 pages of exercises.

Both books contain easy-to-view summary sections of verb formation and uses of each verb tenses, including many examples. However, Big Red 555 only covers verb conjugation in the "summary" section while 501 covers not only verb conjugation in the "summary" section but also direct and indirect pronouns and other aspects of Spanish grammar.

One feature that I like about both books is that they both contain an English-Spanish Verb Index that allows the reader to look up the 555 or 501 words by their English meaning.

501 does have several more additional or supplemental sections than Big Red 555. To name a few, 501 has a section on idiomatic expressions. 501 also has two "tourist attraction" sections in the back pages. One section consists of more than thirty practical situations you may find yourself in while visiting Latin America or Spain. The other section gives the reader many popular phrases, words, expressions, abbreviations, signs, and notices in Spanish and English in one alphabetical listing. This provides the reader with the ability to look in one section as opposed to two when looking for a particular word. For the sake of convenience, cognates and near-cognates are also reduced to one entry in this section.

Considering that the books are relatively inexpensive ($10 or $11), you may want to invest in both the Champion and the Challenger and then decide which one you find most helpful. You will find both books on my book shelf. I have used either or both as a reference source when preparing lessons for my private
students.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for verbs!.......2005-10-28

Mastering verb conjugations is essential to learning Spanish. Anytime that I need to find a verb form, I generally will find it in the Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs. The layout and format are so easy to follow. The Big Red Book even has separate conjugation tables for the reflexive verbs, with and without the reflexive pronouns. Plus there is a cross reference list for other verbs with the same conjugated forms as one of the 555 Verbs. I happen to own The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs, 501 Spanish Verbs, and 2000 Spanish Verbs. Each text has its strengths, and the price for each is a bargain. You won't go wrong in even buying all three of them. But if I could only choose one book of Spanish verbs to have, the Big Red Book would be the one.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Book Review.......2007-04-09

Buy this book. This book provides a comprehensive guide to verb use and grammar. Other topics include idioms, pronunciation, practical rules, time, suffixes, numerals, letters and extensive vocabulary. The book is easy to read and examples are abundant. The topics are easy to find because the book is brief and well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Small and Compact but Extremely Thorough .......2006-04-04

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning Spanish book that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker from Argentina and a professional private Spanish instructor.

This a rather compact book that covers both Spanish Verbs and the fundamentals to Spanish grammar. In 33 short units, the author Ina W. Ramboz covers the major verbal and grammatical concepts of Spanish. The books is arranged so that each unit is dedicated to covering one particular concept. This enables the user to quickly and easily find specific information.

In addition to providing explanations to help the student understand the key concepts of Spanish verbs and grammar, the author also gives the student numerous examples to guarantee that the student grasps a full understanding of the material and is well on her way to mastery of Spanish verbs and grammar. Unlike some books that use impractical situations and uncommon vocabulary to demonstrate usage, this book uses contemporary vocabulary that reflects real-life situations that one is likely to come across while living in or traveling to Latin America.

Unlike many of the books on the market that cover both Spanish verbs and grammar, this book is small enough to be conveniently carried with you almost anywhere, but also thorough enough to be considered a true guide to mastering Spanish verbs and grammar. If you need to quickly develop a thorough understanding of Spanish verbs and grammar, but you lack the time or patience to read books such as Spanish Verbs and Tenses, the Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, etc., then this may be the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The handiest little grammar.......2006-03-08

This is just the handiest Spanish grammar to have at hand. I'm using the Teach Yourself... series of books (I have the Latin American Spanish, Spanish Verbs, Spanish Vocabulary, and Spanish Grammar) and the Oxford Take Off in Latin American Spanish, along with the Pimsleur Audio-only CDs.

Whenever I have a question about a grammatical item, this is the book in which I can find the clearest and most concise explanation. For instance...it takes ages for them to talk about the imperative in the Teach Yourself series. In this grammar, I just had to look in the imperative section, and it quickly summarized how to make all of the forms of the imperative and what other verb forms each one is related to. That's all I really needed, a quick look-up, not a long winded explanation which tries too hard to be "non-technical." Granted, this grammar does assume that you know grammatical terminology--if you do, you'll probably be quite pleased with the speed with which you can find answers to your questions with this book.

I remember enjoying the French edition in this series when I was in high school years ago...and I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy this Spanish version as I continue my self-study.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning!.......2004-09-09

This is another book that was recommended to me by Patrick Jackson at www.learningspanishlikecrazy.com When this book first arrived in the mail my first impression was how could such a thin book with only a little more that 100 pages be of much help. I was so wrong. This book is a very comprehensive grammar book. The author does an excellent job explaining the differences between "para and por" and "pero and sino." The wrong use of these words can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

5 out of 5 stars There is simply no better book! Regardless of Price........2002-02-21

I just couldnt pass up the opportunity to review this book. It is probably one of the cheapest books of it's kind and yet it is the best of it's kind. I am not kidding when I say that with this book and a good dictionary and phrase or text book you could become fluent in spanish. It covers Verbs so simply and efficiently that you learn the most important conjugations for each type of verb all at once in just a few pages. (Which means you are not trapped in the present tense because your class or text hasnt yet discussed preterite or imperfect or future).I must also add that it has an excellent review of idioms in the back and the best coverage of Articels el, lo, la that I have ever seen, and I have many books on spanish. Now before I go you must trust me when I say that I am being completely objective and that I am well acquanted with language study and learning (Japanese, Chinese, French, Korean) because this is the best book available on the subject, and spending more money will not get you anything superior to the coverage in this book. If you are thinking about buying it DO IT! You wont regret it (Oh by the way I am the only child in a spanish speaking family who didnt learn spanish growing up but I now speak it more than well enough to get by, in large part because of this little yellow book!)

I bought my verb book seven years ago and still use it.

5 out of 5 stars Portable and easy to use.......2007-07-26

I found this little guide to be more useful overall than the full size edition. It has less words, but I like the concise introduction better and it's smaller so I can keep it with me as I travel during the day.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Verbs (Barron's Verbs Series) by Christopher Kendris, Ph.D. .......2007-05-12

I bought this for my fiance, who is taking Spanish lessons to make her more fluent on our church trips to Nicaragua. I had used other verb conjugation reference books before and this compact book seemed to have all of the same benefits, but in a smaller size.

My fiance loves it, because it will fit in her purse, it helps her with all verb tense and it lists verbs not in the book and matches them with similar verbs with similar conjugations. I have use it and we both find it an excellent resource.

We are very pleased with this purchase.

Order arrived fast, in perfect, new condition. Type size smaller than expected, making it a bit difficult for older eyes. Content, however, is exactly what I wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Great small book.......2007-01-06

I am ordering this book because I saw someone using it on the subway yesterday! She was kind enough to let me look at it, and it was just what I needed--a compact reference to many verbs. This is going to be very helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish vocabulary book I've ever purchased!.......2007-06-23

The Big Red book of Spanish is broken down into very comprehensible categories which make it easy to absorb the vocabulary and retain the words in your memory. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone. A real bargain considering the amount of material covered and the price!!!A real gem of spanish books. I anticipate being more fluent after reviewing all the words in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Verb Book review.......2007-04-18

This is a must when you want to learn to put the proper tenses to the verb. It is very easy to read. I use the CD periodically to test how much I've retained. Taking the reviews on the CD is a very good gauge of your progress.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for homework!!.......2007-03-18

My Spanish teacher gives us verbs and 3 tenses that she wants them congugated in. All I do is look the word up and copy it down. This way, I know I have the right answers to study from. There are just so many rules to remember, this book is a great thing to have around. I haven't checked out what was on the CD yet, but I recommend this book if you plan on getting anywhere with the Spanish language.

3 out of 5 stars Big Rf Spanish Verbs with CD-ROM.......2007-01-06

It is a good book for learning basic Spanish. The book has many useful example sentences, which are very useful. It is bulky so I use only when I can't find words in more compact book such as "Everything Spanish Verb Book" by Lawless. I feel the CD-ROM came with the book is not so useful for a person who try to concentrate on verb conjugation. It is almost a lecture book all by itself. They should have considered a lecture format which is more covenient and simple in storing in iPod or like. Wish it was a simple CD without fanfares, not CD-ROM. Again the book, however, is very useful.

3 out of 5 stars The Book Gets 5 Stars, the Sofware only 3 Stars .......2006-09-05

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning-Spanish resources. I am also a native Spanish speaker from Argentina, and a professional private Spanish instructor.

I have highly recommended the book, The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs (555 Fully Conjugated Verbs). I have given it much praise, a 5 star Amazon review, and recommended it to many of my readers as one of the most important books for learning Spanish. I have also used it over and over again as a reference source when preparing lessons for my private students. However, I was somewhat disappointed with this new software that accompanies the book. It was far from what I expected.

There is plenty of audio in this CD Rom. Just one problem. All of the audio features a native English speaker speaking English. Yes, English only. You will not hear any Spanish on this CD-Rom. There is an English-speaking virtual narrator that appears on the interface of the software that guides you through out the exercises.

Although the exercises are pretty good, they would have been much better if they also included the Spanish audio. In fact, if this was only a book, I would have given it 5 stars, the same rating that I gave a previous edition of the book without the software. One good thing that I can say about the software is that it has a very helpful assessment test that helps the student evaluate her level of Spanish or, more accurately, her ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. One bad thing that I can say about the book is that I found at least one error in one of the exercises.

However, this is not merely a book. It is also a piece of software. Unlike software products, books do not have sound capabilities and therefore cannot teach learners spoken Spanish. But to have a a learning-Spanish software product that does not teach learners how to recognize spoken Spanish when it is heard is doing a disservice to learners of Spanish.

This software may still be very useful to a high school or college student that has no desire to actually speak the language but simply wants to get a good grade from her teacher or professor. For that purpose, I strongly recommend this software. But someone who really wants to learn how to speak Spanish may be a little disappointed with this software. On the other hand, since the software also comes with one of the most important books for learning Spanish (The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs - 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs), I am compelled to recommend the product. But don't expect much from the software.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great review book. .......2007-06-14

This book is better than most at explaining the complex rules of Spanish, but also some of the interesting background behind the rules. Not for beginners, but definitely a great book for year 2 Spanish learners.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate brand is the gold standard of language teaching books!.......2006-03-21

I have been using The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication as a review and reference book. It has seen me through Spanish language exams, travel to Spanish-speaking countries, business meetings where I had to speak Spanish, and even social situations. I read Spanish language newspapers and magazines and even some history and literature and watch Mexican telenovelas with a high level of comprehension.

I've been seeking a good follow-up review text and at last I found it: The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice: Mastering Verbs and Sentence Building for Confident Communication. This amazing book is taking me through verb forms in all the tenses. The explanations are crystal clear and there are loads of exercises for practice. I love the Building Sentences section in each chapter because from the simple conjugated verb I learn how to build sentences by adding the verb + infinitive construction, or create sentences with double object pronouns; I learn how to express probability, how to focus on a certain element in the sentence, etc. I can say all the things I've wanted to say about "if something happens" or "if something were to happen" or "if something had happened" (possible conditions or contrary-to-fact conditions).

I like the presentation of Spanish grammar contrasted with English grammar. I'm a native English speaker but never really thought about English grammar until I used The Ultimate books. I find this very helpful, and I'm learning a lot about English, too!

Spanish has a lot of tenses and a lot of irregular verbs. The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice is helping me to learn and practice them in context. I really like that the book allows me to go out of order which means if I need more practice on the present subjunctive (which I do!), I can jump right to Chapter 11. This book makes learning Spanish so logical and even enjoyable.

I think the Language Boxes are great because I'm learning interesting facts about Spanish. I didn't know that about 4,000 Spanish words, such as ojalá, el café, el alcohol, and hasta, were borrowed from Arabic. I am also learning many words that Spanish borrows from English to describe computer terms, such as crashear, linkear, and cliquear.

The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice is the gold standard of language teaching books.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Gordon-Stillman Spanish language learning tool.......2006-01-20

I want to be the first to review this extraordinary book as I am already a happy (and frequent) user of The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication, a book by the same authors Gordon and Stillman that made it possible for me to learn Spanish to speak, read and write for business. I reviewed that book 12-26-99, "Spanish Learning Made Easy". I am now using The Ultimate Spanish Verb Review and Practice: Mastering Verbs and Sentence Building for Confident Communication to further my study of Spanish. I find the book particularly helpful for many reasons. First, the comprehensive number of verbs and the organization of verb lists in structural and semantic groupings provides an easy way to expand my vocabulary and a good reference tool. Second, the grammar explanations of verbs and tenses are extremely clear. Third, each of the 15 chapters presents one or more tenses or type of verb, followed by a section called Building Sentences in which the verbs and tenses studied are expanded into meaningful sentences. Fourth, the book has loads of exercises of all types, and much useful current vocabulary, such as computer and technology verbs. Fifth, I like the language boxes that give interesting information about the Spanish language. Sixth, because the chapters can be used in any order, I can personalize my Spanish language education and focus on key areas for me in a quick and efficient manner. Seventh, the book is so well-organized and user-friendly that I can work through a tense or irregular verb on a short flight. This smart and unique book was written for advanced beginning through advanced learners of Spanish, and I have already recommended it to friends and business associates who are at different levels. The authors' method really works for me as I am confidently and successfully using Spanish in my professional and personal lives.

4 out of 5 stars Cute book, good for beginner students.......2007-08-13

I purchased this book to help me teach verbs to a Spanish I class. So far, they do recall many of the mnemonic phrases especially the rhyming ones (e.g. Boone leaves the saloon), although the book does not contain as many verbs as I would like, and does nothing to help remember stem-changing verbs (besides listing the conjugations below the cartoon).
Even so, it's a good study aid and we have been using it whenever new verbs come up that are included in this book.

This book is extremely helpful for students learning Spanish because they are not just learning the verbs by memorizing them, they are doing exercises and it gives them the ending formula.
