Good Place To Start.......2005-10-25
There are a lot of turnovers in the publishing business and therefore it is unwise to trust this book to be completely accurate. It just takes too long for it to go from research to the book store shelf for all the entries to correct. However, it is still a great place to start your search for a publisher of your creative work. Another great place is the BOOK STORE. Find the books you like, flip them over, write down the publisher, and look them up online.
I am an illustrator and am disappointed with the focus on writing and creative writing ideas/outlets. This is a fact of life for me and other illustrators with books like this however. There are many more middle-aged Moms out there that want to publish there great new idea for a book than there are emerging illustrators. And there are way too many of all of us alltogether - the competition is tough. If you use this book, use it as initial research and then start your own database.
Everything you need.......2005-10-01
If you're writing or illustrating a children's book, this is your bible. It has everything you need to know to complete the process.
Helpful listings of markets and plenty of useful advice for beginning and established writers.
ALMOST EXCELLENT.......2005-07-20
2005 CHILDREN WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS MARKET BOOK IS ALMOST EXCELLENT BUT NOT QUITE,IT HAS FALL BACKS- THEREFORE AT TIMES MOST DISAPPOINTED. BUT ON THE WHOLE IT HAS SERVED ITS PURPOSE-
Great Resource.......2005-03-25
This is a great resource for those interested in being a published writer or illustrator! Thanks~
Essential market guide for writers and illustrators.......2004-09-29
This review is excerpted from a longer review on my web site, The Purple Crayon.
This is essentially an inexpensive annual "yellow pages" of children's publishing for authors and illustrators in the United States, an alternative to much more expensive and harder-to-use tomes such as Literary Market Place. This year's edition is, as usual, an extremely useful book for a children's book writer or illustrator.
Contents: Most of CWIM is taken up by the Markets section, which includes listings of publishers of books, magazines, greeting cards/puzzles/games, and plays, with a special sub-category for young writers and illustrators. The Book Publishers part is over 100 pages long, with about 200 entries, a little longer than last year. Listings as usual range from a few lines to a half page, and include such information as as the publisher's address, names and titles of editors and art directors, a brief description of their publishing program, sample titles, how to approach them, standard contract terms, and tips (direct quotes from the publisher's staff.) The Magazines part of this section is also pretty substantial, at about 40 pages long.
Before the Markets section come a variety of articles, of which the first four--"Just Starting?", "How to Use This Book," "Before Your First Sale," and "Running Your Business"-cover the same ground every year. Twelve additional articles are new to this edition. I particularly liked "Critique Group Disfunction and What to Do About It," and "The Pitch," which provides helpful guidance in crafting query letters and the like. But there are also articles for illustrators, and on marketing, and even on niche markets (the puzzle market and writing licensed product). Following these articles come lengthy interviews with Newbery winner Jerry Spinelli and the quirky illustrator J. otto Seibold, and a very interesting "First Books" feature, which focuses on first books published by independent publishers.
After the Markets section come a variety of materials in the Resources: listings of agents and art reps; 3 more "insider" pieces; organizations, conferences, and workshops; book, magazine, and web resources; a glossary; and a useful index to the publisher listings, which enables you to find publishers by age level or subject.
The length of the book is listed as being 442 pages, making it 10% longer than last year. The publishers claim over 700 updated listings, which by my reckoning means just about every listing has been updated, and over 100 new ones (the back cover states there are a total of 740 listings of book and magazine publishers, agents, and art reps).
Comments: CWIM continues to be the leading market guide for children's writers and illustrators with the 2005 edition. I like the feature articles, but the meat of CWIM comes in the listings, which get significantly updated every year. Yes, you could gather much of the information you'll find in it on your own, through diligent searches online, phone calls, and guideline and catalog requests to publishers. But the time spent doing that is time lost from your real work.
So how good is the Markets section? I've checked through the listings of book publishers, conferences, and agents, which are the areas I am best qualified to judge, and I found very little that did not seem to me to be both accurate and up-to-date. This year's edition, incidentally, came out in August, two months or more earlier than its usual release date in October or November. Listings are up-to-date, so far as I can tell, through April of 2004.
Children's book writers and illustrators need this, and should strongly consider buying a new edition every year--or at least when your scribbled-in updates are getting out of hand.
Book Description
For nearly 25 years, Novel & Short Story Writer's Market has been the only resource of its kind exclusively for fiction writers--no other resource provides as many listings devoted specifically to the craft of story. Each entry details what editors are looking for, how much they pay, how soon they respond and how to get in touch with them.
Inside, you'll find:
*2000 completely updated listings, including magazines, book publishers, literary agents, contests and literary journals, plus 350 listings new to this edition
*Expert advice from a spectrum of fiction writers, including Margaret Atwood, horror writer Douglass Clegg, romance writer Debbie Macomber, mystery writer T. Jefferson Parker, and more
*Helpful resources listing conferences, workshops, and writing programs
Any writer writing any kind of fiction needs this essential resource.

Valuable Tool.......2005-09-21
Provides the names and addresses every writer needs. Be sure to use the latest edition, however. There's nothing worse than sending a cold manuscript to a nonexistent editor.
A Solid Guide to Fiction Markets.......2005-04-20
Every year Writer's Digest Books comes out with a new set of guides for writers, each containing updated entries and new articles. This particular guide is directed at fiction writers only; unlike in the more general Writer's Market, here literary journals publishing only poetry and magazines publishing only nonfiction are excluded, making it easier for fiction writers to navigate.
Although the author interviews and craft articles are interesting, the market entries are the most valuable. Changes in editorial staff, focus, and the demise/birth of new markets every year necessitate buying each year's edition. Beginning writers will need to carefully read "The Business of Fiction Writing" while experienced writers will bypass most of the front matter to get right to the listings. Not all magazines and book publishers are listed here since the guide requires the cooperation of the publishers, but the compilation is extensive enough for most writers.
The 2005 edition contains interviews with novelist Margaret Atwood, anthology editor Shannon Ravenel, literary editor Jill Adams, and graphic novelist David Mack. Of particular interest is a piece titled "Premiere Voices", where four authors, including The Kite Runner's Khaled Hosseini, describe their different paths to publication. Articles addressing individual genres (romance , mystery, sci-fi, horror, etc.), self-promotion, and craft and technique round out the front matter.
As a published novelist and short story writer, I find the yearly listings mostly helpful for the placement of short fiction. Novelists would do better to get an agent first (see 2005 Guide to Literary Agents) unless they believe their fiction is better suited to a smaller press, in which case the listings here would be extremely helpful. Writers are advised to read each entry carefully to determine compatibility with their own writing.
Highly recommended for writers trying to publish their fiction.
YOUR GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED.......2005-03-17
I've read and used the regular Writer's Market, and found this one to be of equal valuable. It gives you publisher's names, and addresses. Some note phone numbers, and many list email addresses and/or websites. This book can be an valuable tool in getting published. The first time I had an article published (and paid for it), was due to the fact that I obtained the address from the Writer's Market, and it's the same fine folks who publish this wonderful guide. But besides listing various publishers, it also contains information to help you get the best results in submitting your material. Information I might add, that has helped me tremendously.
Now here is somethings everyone who writes (or would like to write) need to know; I took a course in college concerning creative writing. My teacher was an published author of several books, and ghost writes for a popular publication. She told everyone in the class that writers average 70 rejections before getting published. And that applies to both new writers, as well as seasoned pros. And let me state this about all you "doubting Thomas'" out there who say to yourselves, "no one would ever publish anything I wrote". You won't know until you try!!! And why be like a lot of people who, later in life, live with regrets because they didn't try. I cannont count the number of people who have beat astronomical odds and succeeded at getting their work published. So if you want a book that will help you to at least get your work looked at, you'll need this informative publication. The one question that has been brought up to me is "How do I know they won't rip me off?". Well, anything is possible, but I have never known anyone to be taken advantage of by publishers of this book. But if you find yourself hesitant to send in a manuscript, simply contact the US copyright office, fill out the proper forms, pay the fee, and have your work copyrighted. That way, you at least have some sort of documentation of your work. but let me stress again, I have never known of anyone using any of the Writer's Market publications to have been taken advantage of. So why not get this guide, and GO FOR IT!!!
A Must for Fiction Writers.......2005-02-02
You could spend countless hours looking for one publisher for your work on the Internet or you could spend a few minutes looking inside the 2005 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market and have a complete list of prospects. This year's guide has undergone a complete makeover to give the 25th edition an all-new look.
You'll find complete contact information for book publishers, literary magazines, small circulation publications, online markets, consumer magazines, contests and awards, writers' conferences and other resources to help you get published. There's also a section on literary agents and if you're ready to seriously dig in and find an agent, the 2005 Guide to Literary Agents is also a must.
Not only does each Novel and Short Story Writer's Market listing contain contact information, it also shows you exactly what type of work they're looking for, the format for your submission and terms of payment. Many listings also give you advice from that particular publisher on how to break into their market.
There are a number of excellent resources in addition to the market opportunities. Articles covering everything from specific genres to self-promotion, plot structure to interviews with industry professionals, help the fiction writer not just find a market but to enhance their writing abilities as well.
No matter what your writing experience level, if you're looking for a home for your fiction, the 2005 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market is your first step in seeking publication. This guide can help you find a long list of potential publishers specifically looking for your type of work, helping you submit your work to an appropriate publisher while also saving you time and money.
pay more, get more with writers market.......2004-12-27
This book was extremely disappointing for short story writers, I cannot speak for novelists. Three out of four of my regular markets that I use were not listed, not even the Reader's Digest. I had to use my old 2001 Writer's Market to find the website and current editors names. I really do not recommend it.

Christian Writers' Market Guide 2005 is the 20th Anniversary Edition of this invaluable resource. Christian Writers' Market Guide is published on a yearly basis. Each year new markets are added and even more information is included.
If you write inspirational, self-help, spiritual, poetry, or Christian articles, ebooks, books, or music this publication needs to be on your bookshelf. The information in this book includes both online and print media for domestic and international markets with each entry detailing the contact information (snailmail, fax, and email), submission guidelines, genre specialities, payment rates, and tips. These entries are cross referenced by media, market, genre, and denomination.
In addition to this helpful information, this guide also includes entries for reviewers, publicists, and distributors as well as detailed lists of associations, books, and online resources for writers. There is even a section listing contests and awards for Christian writers.
Specialized Help.......2006-01-31
This resource for Christian writers is very thorough, with the notable exception of website addresses for the listed publishers. Now that Ms. Stuart has established a computerized data base, I'm hopeful this will be included in future versions.
Great job, Sally.......2005-07-25
This book is a great and plentiful resource for any serious Christian writer. It leaves absolutely nothing undone. Kudos to the author. Incidentally, she actually does answer emails and is very willing to help with her many other publications as well as her expertise. She is very approachable. Thanks for all the hard work!
A Must Have for any Writer.......2005-06-01
My aunt bought this book for me as a gift and I have used it almost daily in my profession. The book is organized well and has listings of publications and publishers that are not found in other guides. It is easy to read and includes a wealth of information including pay rate, tips, and special needs. At the back of the book, it also includes workshops and conference listings. A must have for any writer!
1,100+ Markets, Sensibly Organized, Cross-referenced.......2005-03-30
The "Christian Writers' Market Guide" is still the reference book every Christian writer needs. Consider this a gimmee. Buy this year's edition. Buy next year's edition. Plan on the following year as well.
What you need to know about this edition:
* 1,180 markets. Pick a Christian denomination (Catholic and Protestant), and their publication is likely listed.
* Almost 700 periodicals, over 350 book publishers. Think of how many you are aware of? "Christianity Today," "New Man," "Decision" are probably at the top of your mind for periodicals. Tyndale, NavPress, InterVarsity Press are probably among the book publishers you know. Maybe you know a few more. Here, you'll discover how vast the Christian publishing world is.
Literary agents, contests, advice for various markets, editorial services, market analyses, specialty markets (like greeting cards) all have sections.
If you are looking to connect with other writers, you'll be happy to find the lists of writers' groups and clubs, and for conferences and workshops. A key group is the Evangelical Press Association, but there are smaller ones geared for denominations and market.
The structure is similar to previous editions, but, as always, the current year provides the most accurate data.
Each publication starts with symbols indicating if it is new, if the data is confirmed, and if they pay. There's the title, the contact info including a URL, an editor's name, a brief description, the page count and circulation number, the subscription cost, percentage freelanced, submission preference, payment style, and general content needs.
Missing but I hope soon changing, is a purely digital version. Searching through a book to find, for example, what periodicals pay for poetry, can be frustrating when I know a sensible CD version would allow me a complete list within seconds.
Weak also are listings for foreign markets, but this may as much a fault of the publisher as the guide's editor, or may be due to the limited number of international Christian publications.
Add up the above, and you will see how any writer aiming for the Christian market at large would find this an indispensable volume. It fills in the gaps left open by the very useful "Writer's Digest" market guides, and provides the required tools for connecting writer and publisher.
I fully recommend the "Christian Writers' Market Guide," as it remains the best option for any Christian writer.

Customer Reviews:
not really updated.......2007-10-14
This supposedly 2007 edition still lists
numerous publishers that accept cassette tapes! That's a laugh. Evidently the contact lists in this book have not been
fact checked in some time (like a decade).
If you need a basic overview of the various ways to make money from songs, the book's ok but you can get an old version from the
library and it will be just as good. Don't waste your money.
reviewing songwriters market.......2007-04-11
I've been getting songwriter's market since 1984 and find it very useful and informative.
If you are A songwriter - YOU NEED IT!.......2007-02-12
ANY SONGWRITER WHO HASN'T READ THIS BOOK IS AN AMATEUR - If you want to look and sound like a pro - this book is the FIRST STEP.
Perfect For Aspiring Songwriters!.......2006-11-25
If you are an aspiring songwriter, this book is for you. It has great articles from people in the industry on copyrights, publishing, contracts and royalties, as well as lists of publishers, labels, managers and agents. I think it's a fine place to start your quest on becoming a hit songwriter. If you're realistic about your goals and your approach to getting your songs out there, this book, in my opinion, is a neccessary tool to use.
If you want more detail on any of the topics covered in this book, you'll need to get books that specifically address those topics.
Get With The Times.......2006-02-26
I've been reading these books for the last decade... nothing has changed. They (like many major labels) refuse to adapt to today's music industry and continue to sell the same, lame stuff. Their advice is dated, their resources are still limited, the attitude from the majority of labels and managers is down right mean, and at least half won't even listen to your demo. If you feel dicouraged after reading, you're not alone. Honestly, times are changing... start your own website!

A Wonderful Resource .......2006-01-31
Writer's Market Deluxe is an extremely valuable resource in my writing library. The path of the publishing world can be tough to navigate and this book is a wonderful guide. The listings are pretty detailed, offering editor names and addresses, submission guidelines, and pay rates. I really appreciate the online subscription that comes with the deluxe edition as it allows me to keep track of my submissions, responses from editors and publishers, rights sold etc.
I could not do without the plethora of information that Writer's Market offers. I know that as soon as I've completed (and revised aplenty) a manuscript, all I have to do is open this book and quickly find the most suitable place to submit my work.

Great Expose for Writers.......2006-01-08
I came across this book many years ago, ever since I have been yearning to have my own copy due to the enormous information packed in the book for writers.
One of it amazing features is that it gives minute details of publishers and what they expect from writers. Whichever aspect of writing you want to concentrate upon, this book will give you a lead.

a great resource for writers.......2005-10-23
The book came quickly as promised- not in the greatest shape, but I am happy to have it.
Useful Information.......2005-09-21
Provides the names and addresses every writer needs. Every time I decide I don't need the new one, I find that I do. I wish they'd leave the interviews and "inside publishing" crap-o-bilia out, however. Cut the size, cut the price.
2005 Writer's Guide.......2005-09-05
Invaluable resource for who can help you in the industry. It is by no means complete (sigh), nonetheless it is a necessity. I will be purchasing it every year without fail. If you are serious about making a career writing for magazines, you need this book.
