Be very, very afraid. When you step through your door for an innocent excursion, grave danger awaits. You might be mugged; tied up; attacked by scorpions, piranhas, or tarantulas; trapped in a falling plane or elevator, a runaway train, a car on a cliff, a sandstorm, a riptide, or a riot. But now it's safe to take that vacation anyway. Just pack The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Travel, and you'll know what to do when you find yourself, say, leaping between rooftops: "Because you will not be moving fast, it is safe to roll head over heels, unlike jumping from a moving vehicle." Now you'll also know what not to do: never pick up a tarantula, as the spines on their abdomens are like little harpoons, and don't yank the reins of a runaway camel ("Pulling on the nose reins can tear the camel's nose--or break the reins"). You may have the sense, if a leech invades your air passage, to gargle with a 50 percent solution of 80-proof alcohol--but without this book, would you remember not to inhale?
In short, this is the most delightfully terrifying, all-true, laugh-out-loud hilarious book since the original Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, which covers such horrors as alligators and quicksand. Don't leave home without it! --Tim Appelo

Excellent Choice!.......2007-05-14
I purchased this book as a gift for a friend, and it was exactly what I was looking for! This book offers solutions to travel nightmares, very handy for an inexperienced traveler.
A Series of Worst-Case Events.......2006-01-20
Two things you should know when considering whether to buy this book:
1. When they say worst-case scenario, they really mean worst-case scenario. It advertises advice on surviving volcanic eruption, not on losing your travelers' checks.
2. It is humor. On page 48, they advise "earplugs are useful when you want to sleep in a battle zone" which leads into the next section "How To Survive A Hostage Situation." This section, by the way is a kind of awkward read post-9/11 (as near as I can tell, the book has not been revised since before that event or at all). They also recommend that you wave for help when stuck inside the trunk of a car, so there you go.
If you are looking for humor, I recommend it. If you are looking for something more serious in the light of New York, Madrid, London, Thailand/India/Sri Lanka, New Orleans, etc. in the past five years, you will need to look elsewhere or you will be disappointed.
Hilarious and handy.......2005-01-03
This book was so funny! My friend and i have nothing better to do, so we went and sat there and read all of the worst case scenario book, and i must say, this one was bomb! i loved the emergency phrases in the back, such as: Why is the water brown/green/yellow?
I actually learned something from this book too. The section on how to stop a thief and how to survive a mugging are good for anyone to learn, not just travelers!

Light reading for the adventurous tourist.......2004-10-26
This book, like the others in the series, is tongue in cheek. Some of the advice and scenarios are practical but others are completely in fun. My favourite was the advice of what to do if you are threatened with alien abduction. You should not let your mind give in to them. In other words, stop hallucinating and you will be just fine. :)
At the same time some of the advice is practical and could be useful to everyone, not just travellers. For example it gives advice on what to do if your car ends up hanging over the edge of a cliff. While not an everyday occurrence it almost happened to a friend of mine during a snowstorm on the highway.
Not up to past standards.......2004-08-25
The "Worst Case Scenario" people are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Surviving an airplane crash and building a snow shelter can be important! But encountering aliens, while offering both an extreme scenario and a touch of humor, isn't specifically travel-related. The same with a plummeting elevator, or losing someone who's tailing you. On the other hand, they've omitted some important items, like getting arrested in a foreign country, or losing your passport. This series is losing steam.

The Outdoor Survival Handbook.......2007-09-14
The subtitle of this book is: a guide to the resources and materials available in the wild and how to use them for food, shelter, warmth, and navigation. The author has parceled out his observations, instruction and advise according to the four seasons. So rather than having a single chapter on types of shelter which one could locate or construct in the wilderness within the various climates or seasons, he parcels out this information over the four main chapters of the book. He does this for each category of survival: shelter, fire, water, cordage, and food. His intention seems to be that the reader use the book as an introductory survival course beginning in the spring, focusing on the particular type of shelter shown in that chapter and not getting distracted by other types that either cannot or need not be built then.
There is some sense to this kind of organization, but yet he leaves any discussion of hygiene or cooking, for example, until the summer chapter, when surely this information would have been just as relevant to the spring. If you have to at least selectively read ahead anyway to be better informed, why not just organize the book from the start so that the categories of survival occur as separate chapters, with the special circumstances of each season being discussed within the category, rather than breaking the content of the category across the four seasons? But the organization according to seasons allows the author to focus upon nature as it lives in each season, which seems to be as important to him as the types of shelter or the various methods of starting a fire.
The book is well illustrated and feels quite accessible. There is quite a bit of useful information on tinder and laying out fuel for a fire, even though it doesn't all occur, as it logically should, in a single chapter; and there is much, also, on cordage, but again, not all in one place. Because of the large and clear illustrations, it seems a good enough first book on wilderness survival. It does not overwhelm the reader with detail, but for some readers it is that very complexity of detail and a more rigorous organization that would be missed.
Handy pocketguide.......2007-06-01
An excellent and handy pocketguide to survival, Ray Mears puts his knowledge in this book and it shows. The info is at hand, practical and easy to read.
Remember the old question, what book would you take with you to a deserted island?
Well... this is the one.
Good all around book.......2006-11-08
First, this book is not about wildnerness survival. The recipes that include garlic and butter are well, not practical if your lost in the woods. The book is more geared towards going into the wilderness with everything you need at your disposal, and not lacking the essentials. The information is well presented, and does not deal with emergencies but rather going out into the woods and enjoying yourself.
The book is more about developing a spiritual relationship with wildnerness and emergency wildernesss survival is a matter of life and death, and not a romantic experience where you walk out having touched the hand of God. If you live, you will probably find God. I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning about survival in the wilderness. I found alot of very useful information, but, having a pretty solid base already, the book is still a fun read.
The sections on cordage are very well done, and the sections on pottery, skinning are also well done. I think if you want to have a rewarding wilderness experience without the dangers of being lost, this book is awesome. If your looking for what to do in case your lost, this might not cover all the bases.
Still a nice book that I frequently thumb through while sitting in the bathroom.
Roughin it up? Read this one first........2006-07-05
The book is very focused, informative and explained.
It could have a chapter on GPS, but we get it with the GPS so its ok not to have it here. And using a compas is explained.
On the plant food, the chapter could have been clearer.
But the chapter on survival in the wilderness is indispensable.
OUTDOOR SURVIVAL HANDBOOK.......2006-07-04
THIS BOOK IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHILE IT STILL GIVES YOU A LOT OF INFORMATION.
I WOULD RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK TO MY FRIENDS.

BILL CUNNINGHAM

Book Description
The terrible twos? Make that the terrible two-thousands. On average, it takes $2,000 per year to raise a toddler, which makes bargain hunting with an eye for quality a necessity. In this follow-up to their best-selling Baby Bargains, Denise and Alan Fields point parents of toddlers to the best deals. Topics include decor on a shoestring; ten ways to avoid wasting money on clothes; reviews and ratings of booster seats; reviews of name-brand potty seats and other toilet-training aids; the truth about "toddler meals" and where to eat out with children; great deals on strollers, bike helmets, carriers, and other on-the-go gear; toy, book, and CDROM recommendations by age; finding the right preschool, toddler classes, and swimming lessons; tips for family vacations (and how to survive them); and more. Illustrations throughout add to this wealth of information.

2007 edition available as an eBook.......2007-05-08
I haven't had time to read through it yet. But the Baby Bargains book was pretty helpful (though too dependent on the anecdote in some cases). I'm hoping this will be similar.
I downloaded the 2007 edition from the Baby Bargains website since the print version offered at Amazon is 3 years out of date. The eBook is in PDF format and readable by any computer with a recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It's also cheaper than the paperback.
On the plus side you can do immediate text searches within the book and you could print out just the relevant info for your shopping trips. On the negative side, you won't have a copy to casually flip through. Everytime, you'll need to boot up your computer or PDA (or PSP running a homebrew PDF reader).
This sure ain't no bargain.......2006-05-29
I hated the baby bargains book but this one is WORSE. My pediatrician gave it a hands down and his only comment was "a few authors trying to make a buck."
They obviously have no research in this book because they recommend products that are not even age appropriate. These authors have little credibility in my eyes and according to other reviewers, it seems the same. I was never a bargain shopper, really, I mean who is unless you have to be! But, if I was, I don't see this book as a bargain.
Love all of these books.......2006-04-02
I started with Baby Bargins and moved on to this one, I love it...as a new mom it saves me so much time and money.
Good resource.......2006-03-08
While we did not use this book as much as we did the Baby version, it still had some good information. The companion website is also invaluable.
Great book to have if you want to be knowledgeable about paractical toddler products.......2005-08-09
A great book to have if you want to be smart about what to buy, when there are so many baby products out there. Please note that this is for toddlers aged 2-5. If you have a younger child, it's better to buy a "Baby Bargains" book. Great info on various brands and ratings of both domestic and imported baby gear and apparel, including clothing, shoes, strollers, etc. Some of the information is not necessarily about saving money, as the authors also review posh items, but they also give you great tips on when to buy discounted stuff and get brand name things for less. Overall, a useful book.
Book Description
Life-saving first-aid and wilderness medical care, water procurement, improvised survival tools and weapons - having this book in any emergency could mean the difference between life and death. This is one of the best guides we've ever seen.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable.......2005-01-15
This book, by the Janowsky's, is chock full of good advice. Unlike many of the genre there is much useful information given regarding being lost in the wilds. Additionally, often there is given more than one way of accomplishing a goal with the author's opinion as to the correct method. The diagrams, mostly, support the text, however, the photo's leave much to be desired. I would buy this book, in fact I did.
good, complete, concise and compact.......2001-12-29
I recently had cause to look this book over a second time, and I found it more impressive than before. It has a balanced presentation of all the essentials (fire, shelter, food and water procurement, signaling, travel, direction-finding, improvised equipment, plants, clothing, and first aid), and if the manual format lacks in literary style, it makes up for it with a concise but dense presentation of useful, real-world information, amply illustrated (no color photographs, however).
The content is slanted toward northern boreal or subarctic environments (authors live and teach wilderness survival in Alaska), but there is enough general coverage of the topic of wilderness survival to make the book worthwhile for anyone interested in the subject. The economy of the presentation coupled with the information-density of its manual format is the attraction of this book; the authors do not show every type of snare toggle known to man (though they should probably have illustrated a few more than are included), nor every position-finding method, nor every woodcraft or primitive skills technique, nor escape-and-evasion information. The book credibly accomplishes what it advertises itself as being; this book would work as a manual in an aircraft survival kit in the northern latitudes.
My only real quibble with it is that the water procurement section seems dated (the book is copyrighted in 1986), and repeats the old solar still presentation. Not an exhaustive reference; not anything other than a survival manual, but it meets that purpose nicely.
Very Good.......2001-09-18
I found this book to be very good. Unlike some survival books, it covered all nessisary topic such as trapping, signaling, and especialy first-aid/wilderness medicine. Janowsky does a real good job of explaining all the subjects in just 200 pages. The book is writen around his survival and medical kits, which contents he list for you. The book is geared toward northern climates. I thought he could have gone into a little more detail on a few thing, but all in all a very good book. If you are going into the wilds of Alaska or Canada you sould read this book and Bushcraft by Mors Kolchansky.
one of best-except for.......2000-01-04
The text offered in this book is indispensable--trapping section is excellent as is just about everything--EXCEPT FOR THE ALLEDGED PHOTOGRAPHS. These are ALL photocopies that don't transfer worth anything to the page. All are black and white, some are absoluteley indecipherable. Surely in the original printing these were real photos; what happened? Color would have been MUCH more useful in identifying edible vs. inedible plants; for these applications, the SAS Survival Guide is much better. As wonderful as SAS is, this book is even more thorough textually. Final rating: 4.65 stars
Everything you need to know to survive in these 200 pages!.......1997-04-26
Chris has written a very good book here covering all the essentials. If you could only take one book, make this one it. His basic philosophy is simple: THE LESS YOU KNOW THE MORE EQUIPMENT YOU'LL NEED, AND CONVERSLY THE MORE YOU KNOW THE LESS EQUIPMENT YOU CAN GET BY WITH. For example, his simple paragraph (in chapter 4) on fire making materials is miraculous! He reviews Flint/Steel, Matches, Waterproof Matches, Waterproof/WindProof Matches, Electric Spark, Flares, Magnifying Glass, and Friction. I would never have guessed what he chooses and why! This ONE PARAGRAPH ALONE has CHANGED THE ENTIRE WAY I THINK about building a fire and the essential materials needed. His book gets a "10" from me for CHANGING THE WAY YOU THINK, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SURVIVE WITH AN ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM OF EQUIPMENT COUPLED WITH THE PROPER KNOWLEDGE
