Multi-use dictionary!.......2007-08-23
I am a GED teacher and needed dictionaries for my students. This one is half dictionary, half thesaurus, AND has a map section in the middle. They're big but not imposing and the maps are a bonus.
Webster's New Explorer Dictionary and Thesaurus.......2007-06-02
This dictionary is OK. Some of the explanation of the word is college level. I will not recommend for younger children, it might be good for college students.
A great thesaurus and a poor dictionary........2001-11-02
Two books in one,a perfect thesaurus with synonyms antonyms, idioms and related words, but the dictionary is quite poor. There are no usage notes, number of meanings is not impressive, especially when compared to other Websters of that size.Unique feature of this Webster is a set of beautiful maps by the editors of Britannica. If you need a good thesaurus, buy it, if you are interested in a good dictionary do not.
Book Description
Find the right word to enrich communication. Alphabetical lists include more than 340,000 synonyms, antonyms, related and contrasted words, and idioms. Brief definitions describe the meanings shared by synonyms.
Customer Reviews:
A good investment.......2007-08-08
This thesaurus is very helpful. You will be able to find the word you're looking for about 8-9 times out of 10, which is not bad at all. I am an English major and therefore use my thesaurus quite often and I give it a thumbs up. The price is reasonable. The look is professional. It's a great buy!
Merriam -Webster Collegiate Thesaurus.......2007-07-30
This was a gift for someone that is a senior in highschool. They loved it and it will take them through adulthood.
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus.......2007-05-06
I purchased this reference book at the same time I purchased Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary thinking these books would compliment each other and I was absolutely correct !!! I thought this would be a reference book that would collect dust on the bookshelf but that isn't the case. I have used this reference book more than I thought I would and it has come in handy many times now. You can never have enough reference books in your own private library and this is definitely a book that can only inhance your reference book section of your library. I am very pleased with this purchase and the only thing I regret is not purchasing this book much sooner !!!
good reference.......2007-02-20
this is a very useful especially if you need to enrich your vocabulary.
useful tool of reference but..........2005-12-20
I think the title should be changed to 'Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms'. The word thesaurus used here is unsuitable given that the Theseus of Greek myths was neither a great writer, philologist, lexographer or anything else related to dictionaries. This name is not used for such dictionaries in other western european languages. so why use it in English?

Merriam-webster's Dictionary and Thesaurus.......2007-06-09
This is a great product. The shipment was so quick that I was unable to cancel the order just a couple of hours after being placed.
I had ordered them for a 6th grade graduation class and then found out that the principal wanted the hardback version. So now, I am stuck with 12 brand new paperback dictionaries.

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Synonyms.......2007-05-06
This is the compainion to the Merriam-Webster's Thesaurus that I recently purchased. I believe this reference book is a must have in any private library that gives any writing needs you have that edge that stands you apart from all of the other writers in this world. Again, I thought for sure this was going to be a book that collected dust on the shelf but this is not the case at all !!! I use this book along with my new Dictionary and Thesaurus on a regular basis knowing these reference books give me the confidence to go forward and write anything I want. Knowing I can actually express my thoughts completely with words that can give a clear picture of my thoughts and feelings !!! Without sounding like an idiot who failed third grade spelling three years in a row. Only kidding mom. LOL I am very pleased to have this reference book in my library and I look forward to using this book over and over again in the future !!!
Indispensable.......2007-03-13
Indispensable for ESLs. Buy it and you will never regret. See the other reviews for why. In other thesauruses you can not choose a word without knowing the shades of meaning and usage discriminating one from the other. This can be easy for native speakers, it is but terribly difficult for an ESL. I know, because I am one. From the moment I opened its package, I have never used any other thesaurus.
A necessary addition.......2007-03-03
A wonderful resource, if only for the pellucid 30 page introduction that schools the reader in the history of synonymy. Unlike thesauruses- which often corral words that may share inessential, non-fundamental aspects of their meaning, the MWDS is a discriminator among synonyms (strictly defined as words that have the same or very nearly the same essential meaning) that differ in their implication, connotation and/or application.
Teacher & Engineering.......2005-04-17
Although I have given 5 stars, I would like to see the computer version. If you have not had any dictionary regarding synomyms, I would recommend you to have it.
The best book for vocabulary.......2005-03-16
Throw away your thesaurus! Indeed, toss your worthless plain-penny dictionary, and obtain this work! Purchase it hardbacked and thumb-indexed (my forty year old copy is now falling to shambles). For years I have judged and esteemed _Webster's New Dictionary of Synonyms_ as the very best book on precise, pellucid, and exact usage of words. This book is its worthy successor. A thesaurus only lists words; this work discusses, compares, and contrasts words in exhaustive detail, with shades and nuances of meaning, with example sentences from published writers, with antonyms, and with analogous and contrasted words. No writer can do without it. As a teacher, I have recommended it to all my students. As a student myself, all those years ago, I perused nightly ten pages. It belongs with Fowler's as one of the great works in and on the English language.

Customer Reviews:
Handy Book for Vocabulary Reference.......2007-08-22
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms is an interesting research - and I dare to say: entertaining - resource. Because, contrary to what some might think, this is not a thesaurus, but a book which groups words of similar meanings into a topic and explains in a very didactic way and with examples what distinguishes in nuance one from each other so you can use the most appropriate words depending on the situation.
For being small, you will certainly not find about everything you want and when you need, but however, this has a reasonable scope of words that is worth the purchase. In the worst case, you can perfectly take this as a regular book that you could read in your spare time since is pleasantly organized and well written. Trust me, it is not as boring as reading purposeless a regular dictionary.
Great little book.......2007-03-09
This book is compact and you can take it to school with you. This book saved me on plenty of essays.
Webster's Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms .......2005-08-28
This is a good rendition on classic synonyms and antonyms. It would be very helpful in augmenting vocabulary for standardized tests in high school or college.
Classic word definitions are provided. i.e.
- abate means to reduce -lustrous means bright
- boorish means rude -nonchalant means cool
- caustic means "a biting wit" -pensive means thoughtful
- chide means to criticize -preponderant means dominant
- consonant means agreement -scabrous means rough
- decorum refers to proper conduct
- eccentricity refers to singularlity of behavior
- estrange means to alienate
- fawn means to seek favor
- forestall means to prevent
- gauche means awkward
- implore means to beg
- inconstant lacks firmness
- melodorous means unpleasant
- munificent means generous
- slatternly means rundown
- sojourn means to reside
- suave means well-mannered
-temerity means boldness
-vociferous means to load
This rendition would be very helpful for a wide constituency of
students , editors and school administrators.
Insufficient.......2003-01-17
The title is a misnomer, as there is less than one antonym for each synonym introduced. Moreover, as stated by other people, nouns are inexistant, and some common words are definitely missing. For example, no mention of the word delicious.
One could expect from such a respected House.
Barely sufficient at high school level, definitely lacking at university level, of little utility to an experienced writer.
However, it could form the basis for a good reference book as the planning is judicious!
"Master the Subtleties of Language".......2002-11-10
The quote that makes, forms, shapes, fashions, fabricates, manufactures, forges my title comes from the back of the book:~)
"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms" is the hands down best reference book I've ever bought.
It groups synonyms together and then explains the subtle differences between them (e.g., "infer, deduce, conclude, judge, gather" are followed by definitions of each word explaining the subtle differences in their meanings -- and example of their usage in a sentence) If ever you spent five bucks on a writing reference book, this is the book to have.
My only critique is that very few nouns are ever given (most synonyms given in this book are either verbs or adjectives). And it would be helpful to see all the subtle differences between nouns like "automobile, car, sedan." I hope this helps.

Merriam-Webster's Concise Dictionary of English Usage is a dictionary. It is not a usage guide. It is not Fowler, or Partridge, or Bernstein (nor, at 799 pages, is it exactly concise, but that's another matter). Unlike those eminent watchdogs of the English language, the editors of this volume are record-keepers, chronicling the way language is used, not the way it should be used. Based on Merriam Webster's Dictionary of English Usage, this book cites the classic English-language specialists generously but finds its true course by observing actual contemporary usage. Take the word discomfit, for example, the meaning of which (to thwart, foil, or frustrate) is staunchly defended in many usage guides. Sorry, says Merriam-Webster. Their survey says that the use of the word as a synonym to discomfort is so entrenched as to have become "thoroughly established" as the most prevalent meaning. Though the editors of this book are more reporters than campaigners, their prose is eminently readable, charming, and even, like that of the best usage enforcers, quirky. For instance, the word data, they claim, is a "queer fish," while errata "leads a double life," and yclept is "peculiar-looking." --Jane Steinberg

For anyone who works with words.......2002-09-07
Merriam-Webster's Concise Dictionary Of English Usage: The Essentials Of Clear Expression is a well organized, extremely practical, "user friendly" writer's reference. More than 2,000 extensive and meticulous entries discuss the nuances in the daily uses, both historical and present, of commonly confused words in the English language. Enhanced with a multi-page bibliography, Merriam-Webster's Concise Dictionary Of English Usage is a solid and highly recommended guide for anyone who works with words as a core aspect of their career.
Definition of Concise?.......2002-06-21
I was really disappointed with this book. I like words and I enjoy etymology. The precise word can make a poignant statement when used with stiletto accuracy. But, this book is babble using quotes to describe common and contrasting usage of a word. It has all the means but no end. There is nothing concise about this book.

Rhymin' Simon.......2007-10-17
You need this if you are a poet, songwriter, or a Hobbit.
I bought my lemon thyme at some nickel-and-dime in Anaheim!
Okay, you might not be the next Emily Dickinson or Bob Dylan, but
you'll be moving in the right direction.
Okay at Best. Here are a couple better options........2007-07-30
I find this one is basic and limited. You can only find rhymes based on sounds. A good rhyming dictionary should cross-reference both sound and spelling.
I couldn't easily find a rhyme for the word "exit".
I would recommend the Penguin or the fully executed Oxford. The Penguin is a good one for a backpack or travel or carrying a lot. The Oxford is excellent as a stationary at home or at work because it is hard cover.
Merriam-Webster's Rhyming Dictionary.......2007-05-06
A fun and informative reference book for everyone in your family to use. I had no idea a book like this even existed until Amazon.com recommended this book to me after I had purchased other reference books from their internet store. I thought this was only going to be used from time to time when someone needed to write a poem for school or to be silly but that certainly isn't true at all. Since purchasing this book I know I have used this book several times for writing a serious love letter to my loving wife to writing something funny in emails to friends. I have found this reference book more handy than I first thought and I am very pleased to have this book in my private library. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who has children, anyone who loves to write, anyone who enjoys surprising their significant-other with a special poem, anyone who enjoys writing music or anyone who has a silly heart who enjoys writing for the sake of writing !!!
Middle of The Road.......2006-02-16
Over the last several years I have purchased many rhyming dictionaries looking for the one I like the most. This is one of the first books I tried. This particular book is somewhat generic in nature and is plain. It seems that some words are left out. This book would be good for a required book in a college class. It gives you basics plus it is affordable. But if you want something comprehensive, plus full of information on rhyming, there are better books out there.
easy to use and gets you thinking.......2006-01-10
I write sonnets, villanelles and song lyrics and, before I bought this book, I thought somehow that it was cheating to use rhymes that didn't come out of my own head. Well, phooey to that! Yes, I still do make a list of rhyming words first, but then I turn to this dictionary and - wow - the possiblities just open up!
Some of the reviewers caution that you have to read the instructions/introductions first in order to figure out how this book works. Well, I plunged right in; as a matter of fact, when I later read the "how to's," their terminology confused and intimidated me. Just open it up and start messing around. That's what art is all about, anyhow.
I love how the sections of rhyming words are arranged so that the one-syllable words come first, followed by the longer words. Many of the words were entirely unfamiliar to me and I was glad to have a regular ol' dictionary by my side. (I don't plan on using many of those arcane words, but those of us who love language always get a kick out a new word, eh?)
Some reviewers noted that some words are missing. But please don't get your knickers in a knot over that; there are more than enough rhyming words in here to get you past the jump-start phase. And if you, as I do, generate your own word list beforehand, you will catch anything that's missing (or you will continue on with your life in blissful ignorance). Any reference volume is fallible; I say if you see something missing, please write the publisher so the oversight can be corrected.
In short, a fun, fat and inspiring book. I am glad I decided to "cheat"!
