Book Description

When he discovered that the city he lived in for many years was actually entirely rebuilt during the mid-1800s, Leonard Pitt plunged into Paris's history and began photographing what he learned had changed. Eventually, he led tours and gave lectures on the demolition and reconstruction that changed the city forever. Walks Through Lost Paris chronicles Paris's great periods of urban reconstruction through four walking tours. With a special focus on the work of Georges-Eugene Haussmann, this book provides a history of each site along with the motives behind the urban redesign and the reactions of Parisians who witnessed it. Detailed maps take you through a city whose changes were captured by photographers and artists in each stage. Hundreds of color photos, diagrams, and engravings splendidly survey the massive transformation that resulted in the Paris of today.

4 out of 5 stars Paris revisited.......2007-09-19

If you love Paris (and who doesn't?) you'll appreciate this book. It takes us over well-trod streets, past ancient buildings, and brings them alive by examining their past. Atget documented Paris as it was; this book predates that.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Original Book.......2007-08-28

Beautifully produced book with superb use of 19th century & current photos to show changes in Paris locations pre & post Haussmann. A great read for anyone who loves & knows Paris, and doubles as an "advanced" and specialized walking guide for those lucky enough to be on site.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for advanced Parisian visitors.......2007-04-14

At last, in English! I got a copy of this years ago in Paris in French, and was hoping it would finally come out in English so I could recommend it to my friends when they visit. The photos allow you to easily follow along while you complete your individual walks - and it really helps expand your understanding of the city, it's people. and its changing social ways. It also lets you look at Paris in a completely different way -- while it points out what has changed and what is gone, it is also a wonderful volume that lets you see through fresh eyes what is still there - albeit often used very differently. One caveat - this is not a guidebook for beginners -- this is a walking tour guidebook for those who already have an extensive knowledge of Paris and its neighborhoods.

5 out of 5 stars Experiencing Paris history by foot........2007-01-31

Leonard Pitt lived in the heart of Paris from 1963 to 1970 while he studied mime with Etienne Decroux. During that time, he fell in love with the beauty of the city. He discovered that between 1853 and 1870, using an army of 60,000 workers, Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann demolished nearly 20,000 buildings in Paris (replacing them with 45,000 new buildings), leveled Ile de la Cite, and evicted over 100,000 residents, thereby destroying much of the city's rich medieval and Renaissance history. Derived from his own experience leading walking tours through Paris together with his studies of old maps and 19th-century photos, Pitt's guide offers detailed walks (with maps and photos) through Paris's most interesting neighborhoods designed to reveal the city's rich history and redesign: (1) from Saint-Germaine des Pres to Square Viviani; (2) in Ile de la Cite; (3) from Saint-Germain des Pres to the Palais Royal; and (4) in the Marais. Having completed each of these four walks during a recent visit to Paris (where I purchased Pitt's guide upon the recommendation of a local bookstore), I can highly recommend this book. It is not the sort of guide, however, that provides information or recommendations of where to stop and shop, eat, drink, and sightsee along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous photo essay of Paris then and now--finally in English!.......2006-07-15

Leonard Pitt's book "Walks Through Lost Paris" is amazing. In it he chronicles changes made to Paris in the interest of modernization during the Haussmann era (mid 19th century) and later. The changes are documented with abundant before and after photos, allowing you to literally see for yourself how Paris has evolved over the past 150 years.

To Leonard, most of the changes he shows were regrettable, particularly those made in the 20th century. As he says, the one saving grace of Haussmann's many alterations to Paris is that he beat later rebuilders to it(!).

This book should appeal to anyone who has an interest in the unique visual appeal of Paris. The walks are very well narrated and thus should be easy for even newcomers to Paris to follow.

However, I think "Walks Through Lost Paris" will have its greatest appeal to readers already familiar with the neighborhoods Pitt describes. To them (here I include myself), it will be possible to recall the context of the modern-day photos and better appreciate the historical photos of what used to be in the same place. For the repeat visitor, Pitt's book offers a wealth of detail to form the basis of ever-deeper explorations into this stunning, historic city.

As a final note, let me add that I spotted the Parigramme book, in French, "Promenades dans le Paris Disparu" a few years ago and ever since have been looking to see if it had been translated into English. Now it has, and for that I am very grateful.

I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I have. I've already read it twice in the last two weeks!

Zarafa was a gentle 19th-century giraffe, a simple animal whose life was dictated by the tumultuous times around her. From the African savanna where she was caught and tamed as an infant, Zarafa was shipped down the Nile--along with the meat of her mother and several hundred human slaves--to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. From there she sailed on to France, a gift from Muhammad Ali, the "Renaissance Barbarian" viceroy of Egypt, intended to distract King Charles X while Egyptian forces invaded Greece. As political ploy, it didn't work. But as ambassador from an exotic land, this odd animal captivated the French people for almost two decades, as she lived out her life as part of the royal menagerie.

Michael Allin intertwines natural history with a brutal chapter in the history of civilization, augmenting the clarity of both. This story of one docile animal contrasts sharply with those of the human profiteers, warmongers, and interlopers who ultimately decide her fate. But Zarafa's otherworldly charm also helps us to understand the intrigue that led Napoleon to bring not only his troops, but a small army of European intellectuals to study all aspects of Egyptian culture and history, in the invasion that sets up her story. --Lauran Cole Warner

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't Finish.......2006-04-20

I gave this book up after a hundred or so pages without the giraffe in question showing up.

5 out of 5 stars The best little read..........2004-10-25

This is the best history story... keeps your interest all the way through and you'll be sorry when the read is over.... a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful True Tale of Giraffe's Journey Up The Nile..........2004-02-25

...across the Mediteranean, and through the countryside of France, and into Paris! This great little book will be enjoyed for many years to come by people of all ages. Just transporting this bulky beast was enough of a headache, but fortunately its demeanor was (usually) cool, calm, and collected. In 1826, how could this animal set upon such a long, difficult journey? You'll learn in this book! And the French were enthalled by this animal, so unique from all other animals in creation. The "Zarafa" became the center of a huge tourist industry attracting throngs of well-wishers and curiousity seekers for over a thousand miles! Like today's Super Bowl or Academy Awards, all kinds of momenta were made to celebrate (and earn a few francs) this singular giraffe, including clothes, and pottery. A great value and a fine book!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating history lesson.......2003-05-16

Heard the taped version of ZARAFA by Michael Allin, the true story of how a giraffe in 1826 got from Africa to become the first such animal ever seen in France . . . she was a royal offering from Muhammad Ali, Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt, to King
Charles X of France, presented in the hopes of keeping the French out of Ali's war against the Greeks . . . although her arrival did not accomplish its intended task, Zarafa did become an instant celebrity and fascinated all of Europe for the next 18 years.

Although the tale skipped around a bit too much, I did find it a fascinating history lesson . . . what's more, it gave me a good look at what publicity was all about--back in the nineteenth century . . . and it made me appreciate the herculean effort that took place in moving this magnificent creature such a distance.

    Book Description

Whereas Marlow has usually been discussed as a literary device who is of no special interest in himself, this study argues that Conrad portrays Marlow and his relationships with a psychological depth that is unsurpassed in literature. In "Youth," "Heart of Darkness," and Lord Jim, he is a continuously-evolving character whose thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are expressions of his personality and experience. Understanding Marlow's motivations newly illuminates the formal complexity and thematic richness of these works, for his inner conflicts profoundly affect the structure of his narrations, his interactions with his auditors, and the elusive meanings of his tales.

    Book Description

Born in 1876, Natalie Barney–beautiful, charismatic, brilliant and wealthy–was expected to marry well and lead the conventional life of a privileged society woman. But Natalie had no interest in marriage and made no secret of the fact that she was attracted to women. Brought up by a talented and rebellious mother–the painter Alice Barney–Natalie cultivated an interest in poetry and the arts. When she moved to Paris in the early 1900s, she plunged into the city's literary scene, opening a famed Left Bank literary salon and engaging in a string of scandalous affairs with courtesan Liane de Pougy, poet Renee Vivien, and painter Romaine Brooks, among others. For the rest of her long and controversial life Natalie Barney was revered by writers for her generous, eccentric spirit and reviled by high society for her sexual appetite. In the end, she served as an inspiration and came to know many of the greatest names of 20th century arts and letters–including Proust, Colette, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Isadora Duncan, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Truman Capote.

A dazzling literary biography, Wild Heart: A Life is a story of a woman who has been an icon to many. Set against the backdrop of two different societies–Victorian America and Belle Epoque Europe– Wild Heart: A Life beautifully captures the richness of their lore.

2 out of 5 stars From fascinating to dull and repetitive.......2007-07-29

Suzanne Rodriguez is a terrific author. Her attention to research and detail is remarkable. She had the ability to keep me spellbound for the first 100 pages of this book.

Then, due to no fault of her own, the story of Ms. Barney's life became dull, repetitive, and predictable. I certainly do not blame the author. She did make the best out of what she had to deal with.

A person can read of Natalie's affairs for so long. After a while the obvious pattern develops. She spots her prey. Then she chases and wears them down by her attention and affections. Once she has her, things go poorly. Then she moves on to find another woman to lick her wounds. She spots another trophy woman to chase down and therefore put another notch on her bedpost, so to speak. It was the hunt, chase, and the kill that she loved, not the poor women whose hearts she had broken.

I almost felt sorry for her. She was an intelligent woman, but too stupid to realize that her patterns of living and loving were not only destructive to her but also to all of those that she hunted, chased, bed, and had relationships with.

5 out of 5 stars In Memoriam of L'Amazone, Natalie Clifford Barney.......2006-06-16

Natalie Clifford Barney was wild at heart. She loved life and women rather than men. We'll never know why she preferred being a lesbian but she created one of the most memorable and historic scenes in her Paris salons. While Stein was more cerebral, Barney was more fun and light at heart. She was still complicated with a love life that includes Romaine Brooks and Rene Vivian. Anyway this book is quite a departure for me, I read crime books so I'm looking forward to reading this book in depth. I have only just got it and I'm impressed with it's high quality. Of course since I'm still reading it, I still find Natalie's life both in turmoil and complicated by having too many intimate relationships with women. She was definitely one of a kind lady of her time. She has intimate relationships with women because that's her nature as she believes and that's fine. But Natalie is too much for one partner, I haven't even gotten to Romaine Brooks, the love of her life. Of course, Natalie suffers heartache and loss much more than most people are willing to imagine. Men even admired and desired her despite her obvious taste. She was surely cerebral. She never apologized for her nature and she was neither displaying it like it is today. Natalie was classy with her style. She was feminine without any pretense of wanting to dress like a man or be one. She was definitely a woman who loved other women long before it became fashionable and sometimes a joke. I don't what she would think of female celebrities today etc. I know she would probably be either critical or praise them but I don't know. Natalie was a tough person with higher credentials than most people. She wasn't about to welcome just anybody whether they were gay or straight into her salons. They had to be cerebral and an artist and somebody who could change the world for the better. After finishing this wonderful biography, Natalie lived a fascinating life that nobody with any creativity could have written. Of course, it wasn't always happy. Her one true love, Romaine Brooks, distanced herself from Natalie at the end of their lives. Natalie went to the grave with a picture of Romaine. She shares her grave with her sister Laura. Despite all her lovers, Natalie had many of them but all female, it was Romaine that she wanted most of all. Of course, she had Lily Graumont and others but Natalie lived a life that many of us regardless of our sexual orientation could not have imagined. I would love to see Vanessa Redgrave play the older Natalie and one of her daughters, Joely or Natasha Richardson played younger Natalie in a film adaptation. Her sister Lynn could play older Laura. I don't know who could play Romaine, Lily, Eva, or any of her friends and lovers as well. But for the price on amazon.com, this book is one to keep and if anybody ask questions about why you should read this book. Tell them it's about one of the most fascinating literary lionesses of the last century and they'll be interested in it too if they love to read.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for finding more reading material.......2005-09-24

This book caused me to loose sleep. After reading another book, I was looking for a biography type book and this one fit the bill. I want more biographies! But awesome both in terms of the learning about an era, the lesbian scene, etc. I loved it. And you can find references to other classic pieces of that period to read.

3 out of 5 stars Wild Heart Review.......2005-09-09

This was a good summer read, it held my interest and flowed easily. On occasion, the use of language was a bit difficult but, on the whole I would suggest it to someone.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh but the Amazon was not supposed to be generous..........2004-05-30

If you wanted a tale of a heroic and generous female you should have gone and read about the saints, for Natalie Barney is no where near heroic. I do admitt, the author seems to look up to Natalie and that is reflected in the writing, but as any writer must realize, a bit of the writer is almsot always unconsciously put into their work.

This account of Natalie's life is fairly flawless, with the ammount of research done the author had little chance of making a mistake. If you're looking for a good secondary source to other works on lesbians, literature, and the late 1800s/early 1900s this is a good source. It's also a fun read. Being a fast reader, I took my time with this book and found it highly knowledgeable and amusing. I would also reccommend reading this and then reading "The Well of Loneliness" by Radclyffe Hall, you'll know why once you've read both.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful love story which should be read by all.......2004-10-12

Yes, it is true that Bob Paris and Rod Jackson are no longer together, but their love story was still beautiful. This book captures the thoughts of two men falling in love, and as such it should help heterosexuals to understand that our love is the same as theirs. Our marriages are the same as theirs. We have about a THOUSAND obstacles to overcome which heterosexuals do NOT have to confront, so it is a miracle that any of our love stories have happy endings. Some do, this one didn't. But it still shows two beautiful and wonderful people who fearlessly plunged into the treacherous waters of love. Love is always difficult, but when you have the entire world against your love, it is at once more magnificent and far more difficult to maintain. This book should be read by EVERYONE.

A young (...)man interviewed recently by the Washington Post said he wished he could be straight so he could marry and have a long-lasting love like straight couples do. This poor kid had never seen a loving (...)couple on television or in a book. What does this say about our representation of (...)men in the media? They are not showing the true, full story. This book shows a bit of the untold story. (...)men DO have love stories just like straight couples. And some have marriages that last more than 50 years, just like straight couples. It is tragic that our (...)youth are never shown this by America's homophobic media, which won't even allow Will Truman of "Will & Grace" to have a date or a kiss on TV. Every public library needs this book to show these kids that love knows no sexual orientation.

2 out of 5 stars I only give this book two stars only because...........2003-01-13

I only give this book two stars only because Rod and I grew up in the same hometown ( Windsor, Colo.), we are both orginally from Nebraska and went to the same church in Windsor ( with the same minister that was mentioned in this book, only this minister wasn't so accepting of my homosexuality as he was mentioned with Rod's homosexaulity in the book). It brought back the same strugles that I had with aceptance of my homosexuality that I had in Windsor 10 years later ( Rod in the late 70s. Myself in the late 80s).
I respect them both individually but as a gay couple on parade I don't subcribe to this approch ( when it comes to marriage ) that is stated in this book. It has been my experience that if you have to broadcast something this personal and this loud some thing is wrong with the situation.
My advice, If you are looking for a gay couples guide for a better marrige you won't find it here. This book is like a supermarket trade romance book that you see in the checkout line. If you want to work on your marrige work on your self first.

        2 out of 5 stars Oh man...What a story............2002-11-14

I have always admired Bob Paris for his health and fitness and was equally amazed at his coming out. It was a great testimony of rising above the homophobia of his industry.

This book was his and former partner Rod's on-going chronicle of the development of their relationship. It would have been great...had it been another couple. I mean no disrespect but this was the most co-dependent couple that has ever written a book about relationships. You may have to read it to believe it.

I was not surprised when they later announced their public "divorce." The formula for their relationship was a disaster waiting to happen. Perhaps Mr. Paris should write a follow-up book about what lessons he's learned from that experience. This would help others who have thought that his last relationship was something to be modeled after to learn that there is a much better way for relationships to run.

The book is an easy read. The content however is a little hard to swallow but it's a real memoir. It would be an interesting study on co-dependent relationships. Read this book for what it is--a memoir, not a how-to book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Account of How Love Knows No Boundaries.......2000-09-21

Being one of the first gay couples in the national spotlight, Bob Paris and Rod Jackson were pioneers who paved the way for other well-known, and prominent celebrities to come out of the closet in order to gain great greater acceptance in today's society. While many gay celebrity couples such as Ellen DeGeneres & Anne Heche and Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher have come out together with little or no opposition from both the media and society. The story of how these two men came out is an inspiration to all seeking acceptance, regardless of your sexual orientation.

Bob Paris, who was one of professional bodybuilding's top stars and Rod Jackson, a former Playgirl Man of the Year, met, fell in love, and later went on to stage a ceremonial wedding where they exchange vows. "Straight From the Heart," is mostly an autobiographical account of their lives, from their childhoods to their present-day lives. Although Paris and Jackson broke off their relationship in 1997, their story is still an excellent account of what it is to be gay and famous in today's society.

The book can be a tad bit too lame when it comes to both authors giving each other accolades or affection. However, I was intrigued by both Bob and Rod's touring the country and speaking at universities, colleges, and at events about their struggle for acceptance and their advocacy for gay & lesbian rights. The tour opened up in my alma mater, Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, where the authors faced a crowd that was both rude and anxious to hear them speak. I found that interesting because their appearance came a few years before I enrolled there.

"Straight From the Heart," is an interesting account of how love knows no boundaries. While Jackson hasn't been so visible in the spotlight lately, Bob Paris continues to be a best-selling author or fitness and gay studies books. He is an excellent author, as well as a fascinating individual. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know what it feels like to risk everything in your life in order to pursue happiness with the one you love.

          5 out of 5 stars Charming!.......2004-11-28

Sara Martin was orphaned at the age of 8 and lovingly raised thereafter by her Aunt Reni. Shocked to her core by Reni's sudden death shortly after her college graduation, Sara has yet another, potentially more monumental shock to come. A letter in Reni's safety deposit box addressed to Sara reveals the devastating news that she was adopted as an infant.

With a copy of her original birth certificate her only clue to her origins, Sara hires charismatic private investigator Dennis Miller to search for her birth parents.

As the novel unfolds, Sara eventually meets her entire birth family, including her taciturn and enigmatic father and his young son.

This is a charming, upbeat story about what COULD happen in these types of searches and the fantastic results Sara achieves, results which will enrich her life even as she herself breathes fresh new life into the lives of those she meets.

Lori Paris's characters, including the 4-legged ones, are warm and 3-dimensional, and I guarantee you will fall in love with them as you read this well crafted, uplifting story.

5 out of 5 stars Follow Your Heart a rewarding read.......2004-06-12

Thank you, Lori Paris, for weaving such a sentimental and enriching read. The reader is literally swept away and becomes a part of Sara Martin's heartfelt search for her birth parents -- people she only just found out about at the age of 21, on the sad occasion of her last remaining relative's death. Lori Paris does such an excellent job with rich detail that for the timeframe that you are reading the book, you morph into Sara's close friend, cheering for her to find her happy ending. And she does find a doozy of one -- not without her share of struggle and conflict, but the author wraps everything up very well at the rewarding and satisfying end.

          5 out of 5 stars A warm, inspiring book!.......2004-06-12

Follow Your Heart is not only suspenseful, but also heartbreaking and hope-filled at the same time. Lori Paris is at a place where many dare not go, and through writing this book, the blessing that she received was to reveal the secret of the human heart, and that love fills our emptiness and loneliness. She took on a difficult subject in a sensitive manner. Because of its uncalculated emotions, she explored the fragility of not only adoptees but also their families with tender care. And in a gentle, loving manner, she brought out the hidden message of her book; that is, to teach the reader to take a chance on the feelings of their heart. She walks the reader down the path of pain, and in the process, discovers love and being loved by a new family, and encourages the reader to take a leap of faith and go on to a hope-filled future.

5 out of 5 stars A fictional story that gets to the heart of adoption!.......2004-05-30

Paris has written a sweet and fictional love story about adoption. But this is not just a sappy love story. It is about loving and losing, loving again, and loving forever. This is also a must read for any Late Discovery Adoptee (LDA). There are very few books out there that touch on LDA's and their unique circumstances of finding out their adoption status as adults. Paris has a great command of the language and she carries you along. You feel like you are there with her and I had trouble putting it down. It has an incredibly beutiful ending that makes one hope for a better life. "Follow Your Heart" reminds us to do just that...follow our hearts!

Kasey Hamner, M.S., adoptee and author of "Whose Child?" and for LDA's, "Adoption Forum"
