Includes CD-ROM with Reproducible Forms!

This one-of-a-kind resource provides the busy practitioner with empirically supported treatments for seven frequently encountered disorders: major depression, generalized anxiety, panic and agoraphobia, PTSD, social phobia, specific phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Serving as ready-to-use treatment packages, chapters describe basic cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques and how to tailor them to each disorder. Also featured are diagnostic flow charts; therapist forms for assessment and record keeping; client handouts and homework sheets; and session-by-session case examples. Tips for troubleshooting common therapeutic roadblocks are presented, as are strategies for ensuring third-party payment authorization. The searchable CD-ROM enables clinicians to rapidly generate individualized treatment plans, print extra copies of therapist and client forms, find the facts about commonly prescribed medications, and learn more about cognitive-behavioral techniques. Facilitating effective treatment that is adapted to the realities of the typical outpatient setting, including the demands of managed care, this book and CD-ROM will be prized by novice and experienced clinicians alike.

I wish that I had found this text years earlier. I especially liked the CD that accompanied the book.

5 out of 5 stars State of the art.......2001-09-18

Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.
Dr. Leahy is simply the best in his field. And it is a very important field indeed.
Thank you for this book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!.......2001-02-14

I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic. I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work. Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy.......2000-08-24

A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few are as useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy and Stephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship and distilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure. I am a great admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort has exceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is a compendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes a profound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, and those who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is also likely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapy courses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residency programs. Among the particular glories of this excellent book are that the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of the art" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailed treatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients and therapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, and medication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge about disorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two master cognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value to clinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, the book by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitive practitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced and novice therapists can find helpful.

How do you know what's right for you if you don't know who you are? This book will help you take the steps you need to find your inner self -- your soul. It's very non-airy fairy -- it's a very well-grounded, practical book about how to get there. As Holland points out when telling a story about an artist friend, you probably already *are* in the flow and connecting with your soul more than you know. The book is filled with straight-forward yet highly effective ways to reach out to your soul...through gratitude, through love, through keeping a dream journal. The author also share snippets from his own life and his own path, allowing the reader to experience how he found *his* path.

This is the best book I have read from John Holland. John has a beautiful mature way of describing and educating people to a world that is not visible to many humans today. This book is one I will keep for my spiritual resource Library. I enjoyed especially hearing his positive life experiences with the spirit world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidebook for developing psychic abilities.......2007-10-06

All I can say is WOW. John Holland is my new favorite Psychic author. The man writes in a style that is very easy to comprehend, and the techniques he teaches are simple and actually FUN to practice. But most importantly to me, THEY PRODUCE RESULTS! This is a must have manual for anyone looking to develope their psychic gifts IMHO.

Awesome Book! 5+ stars!

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-08-07

This book had alot of the background info. on chakras, and auras etc. But was not extreamly useful in opening up the psychic within.

5 out of 5 stars Intuitiveness and inherent psychic abilities.......2007-07-29

John is a psychic-medium who has been lecturing, demonstrating and giving readings for over 15 years. He helps people connect with loved ones who have crossed over and assists others to become more aware of their psychic abilities.

This is a book with a meditation CD included, and what a nice gift to yourself or for someone else, especially someone on the path. There are 4 tracks in this CD; 2 are just some quick info, and 2 are meditations. These meditations are very similar to those on his separately selling CD "Healing Relaxation & Opening Your Psychic Awareness". I had a very positive experience the very first time I used that CD. It was truly wonderful.

The Book:
First of all, John tells us we are all born psychic or intuitive, but many of us choose to hide it. We are taught quickly as children that those things are just our imagination. This book is about bringing out those traits which you already have. (Now, if you don't believe that, it's OK. Can you just open your mind to the possibility for a minute and stay with me? If there is a chance, would you like to be more "tuned in"? If so, read on.) Now, John's not the only person who is out there saying we all have these abilities either. There are many.

John suggests you read the entire book before using the CD, so you will better understand. The book is not very big, so it won't take too long. I don't have a ruler handy, it's about 5" x 6" (almost square) and has 160 pages. It is clearly written in simple language and it includes exercises to enhance your development, as well as positive affirmations. Topics in the book include: 1) What "psychic" means 2) Psychic strengths--clairsentience, clairvoyance, and clairaudience 3) Meditation 4) Psychic breathing techniques 5) Auras 6) Chakras 7) Psychic tools--decision-making, psychometry, energy scanning, and [taking] your psychic time [centering yourself].

The CD:
The CD is a wee bit over 53 minutes long and has 4 tracks.
Track 1: intro-- :35
Track 2: Healing meditation - 20:15
Track 3: General info - 2:05
Track 4: Psychic awareness meditation: -- 31:19

This set is just wonderful and I think you will be very pleased with it. One word of caution, and John mentions this on either this CD or my other one: psychic opening also opens you to being more emotional. You probably should be in a comfortable place in your life [emotionally] before you start opening psychic connectivity. (So, like if somebody screams, that might be like nails on a chalkboard to you. You might see a dead animal in the road and start crying because you feel the pain the animal felt when it died---and so on, until you get used to the change in your vibration. I remember even reading a story on the internet about a child being hurt and just cried so bad for about 15 minutes. The story didn't have a lot of detail but somehow, I think I felt the child's pain. (I wish somebody had told me about this sensitivity thing earlier. I spent a couple of months wondering what was going on.) Sorry if it sounds squirrely. After all, maybe it's just our imagination???)

5 out of 5 stars John Holland Psychic Navigator Excellent.......2007-07-08

John Holland's Psychic Navigator is an excellent beginner's book - and a very comforting book for moving into a realm of "coincidences," intuition, guides, et al. The CD is helpful: great for meditation, Ipod, stretches-yoga. His voice is lovely - his brooklyn accent a little disconcerting for me. Otherwise the package book and CD are a jewel duo!

5 out of 5 stars the truth within all of us .......2007-06-26

this is a great self help book well written if you want help connecting and want answers another sister book is the calling of your true self another medium who speaks in her book the same as john you would think you were with them both very easy to follow wrote for you to understand but at the same time will make you think there is light at the other end

FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF SOLUTION SELLING

The program that is revolutionizing highend selling, by showing companies how to "clone" their top sales performers

CEOs would pay anything to replicate their best salespeople; CustomerCentric Selling TM explains instead how to replicate their skills. It details a repeatable, scalable, and transferable sales process that formats the questions that superior salespeople ask, and then uses the results to influence and enhance the words and behaviors of their colleagues.

CustomerCentric Selling TM shows salespersons how to differentiate themselves and their offerings by appealing to customer needs, steering away from making one-way presentations and toward having meaningful and goal-oriented conversations. Currently offered in workshops and seminars around the world, its program provides step-by-step directions to help sales professionals:

CustomerCentric Selling TM details a trademarked sales process that incorporates dozens of elements, skills, and sequences into a coherent and proven methodology. By teaching a specific yet innovative model for selling big ticket, often-intangible products and services, it shows sales professionals and executives how to make the seller-buyer relationship far less adversarial, and take selling to a higher level.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-04-08

This book is a refreshing comprehensive guide for you to understand and show your customer a solution that helps them satisfy their need.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Boring and Devoid of Stories or Examples.......2006-04-03

I'm surprised that someone so seemingly intelligent does not know that stories and specific examples are what make a book interesting. This book was totally devoid of them, but instead used vague generalizations from beginning to end. I read the whole book and was waiting for it to get good. It never did. Don't waste your time or your money. Any positive review must have been written by the author's friends. I would rather eat cardboard that read this book again.

5 out of 5 stars A book you need.......2006-03-09

An inquisitive look at why people buy -- and when and from whom. This comprehensive guide will help you to create win/win situations with your customers. The steps offered can help you to narrow down the real objections and to close a deal. This book will help you rise to the next level.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!.......2005-08-23

Lots of big words, but little substance. I give it an "A" for effort, but the outcome is a big "D-" and that is generous.

Book Description

This book presents an intuitive understanding of how humans process information in the performance of tasks—highlighting the strengths and limitations, as well as methods, of performance. Equal emphasis is placed on the implications of these strengths and limitations for the design of equipment with which people interact, and for the design and training of work procedures. Chapter topics include spatial displays, language and communications, memory and training, decision making, selection of action, manual control, and stress and human error. Individuals interested in psychology will appreciate this book's reflection on the link between basic research and real-world applications.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My first Wickens book, and definately not to be my last.......2007-09-24

As a budding Usability Engineer I have to say that early in my career I had heard about Wickens as he a prof of Human Factors Engineering around the Chicago area (if I am not mistaken about the area). I bought the book when I could find it on sale once, and it's been a prized possession ever since. Of all my books, only one person I've ever allowed to borrow this one.

This book is very dense, everything that the writer puts forth is not only fully explained in detail, but is also backed-up solidly with cited evidence. It's a great book and I honestly would reccommend anyone into Usability or Human Factors get this book and you'll find too it's in your library and highly used. Personally mine has different colored flags everywhere for different points and things to notice.

I must say though, that this is not a fast read (due to the information), and it's not necessarily a 'fun' read - but for solid information, I dont see how this book can be beat.

-Dustin

4 out of 5 stars Thorough coverage of research on human factors engineering.......2007-09-13

Wickens & Hollands cover human factors (which they call engineering psychology in their title) thoroughly in this volume. If you found Donald Norman's "The Psychology of Everyday Things," useful, but want something more in-depth, you may find this academic textbook useful. It covers a great deal of research on several topics critical to software user interface design, such as, attention & perception, spatial displays, memory & training, and decision-making.

4 out of 5 stars Good academic book Safety via Psychology.......2007-03-09

Good academic book on study of human psychology and performance in relation to Safety.

4 out of 5 stars A milestone integration of applied pyschology.......1999-08-04

Wickens' book, though slightly dated, provides an integrative review of applied psychological research that remains without peer. It offers students of engineering and design a solid theoretic pillar for the relevant psychological issues. Paired with an applications-oriented text of similar quality, one has much of the material needed for a graduate-level introduction to human factors engineering.

Now Food to Live By brings this organic revolution to everyone who cares about what they eat.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! A life saver!.......2007-10-12

This is the very best cookbook ever! I use this book faithfully almost every day. It's wonderful and easy and not intimidating and EVERY recipe is a winner!! I have been trying to teach myself to cook for a few years now, and I've found that anyone can do it if you can follow a recipe. The trick is finding a good one! I've tried many books, and each one might have one or two recipes that I might add to my "regular" repitoire, a couple of recipes that are awful or too hard or involved to make, and the rest of the book that is never used. Not so with this book!!! The recipes are all simple and easy to follow. They don't take a long time to prepare or have too many steps (although some require a little planning, like that you marinate overnight). They use regular ingredients that you can find in any grocery store. You don't need any crazy kitchen gadgets or expensive appliances. But best of all, the recipes are absolutely delicious!!! Most are old favorites but with a delicious twist... the BEST chicken salad you have ever eaten, the juciest ribs you ever tried, the most flavorful chili ever. She uses fresh ingredients and there are a lot of fresh herbs, curry, and vegetables. There are huge, full-color pictures so you can leaf through the book and decide what looks good to you that day. I have no trepidation whatsoever with trying something new from this book on a whim (although I've made almost everything in it now!). This book has singlehandedly won me the reputation of a very good cook!!! I highly recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-09-24

Not only are the recipes easy to follow with great pictures of what the dish will look like but each recipe uses fresh and quality ingredients that tastes delicious. A bonus from this cookbook is that you learn all about the ingredients used as well as the author (she is amazing and fascinating).
Really, this is a must have -- for both beginner and experienced cooks. I have made several dishes from this book and EVERY recipe, not just a few, has been so delicious. Also, it makes the perfect gift because you are giving it knowing that each recipe is healthy, uses quality ingredients, will look good to serve, easy to follow and most importantly, tastes so good! I can't wait for her next cookbook!

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book!.......2007-08-25

"Food to Live By" is a fantastic cookbook. It features a great variety of healthy and delectable recipes, and includes the author's history and philosophy of organic farming, and is filled with beautiful photos. I never tire of reading through this cookbook and trying out new recipes-and its one of the few books that stays on my kitchen counter-all the time!

Every recipe I have made has turned out wonderfully! I believe the person interested in learning about the organic approach to living would find this book informative and inspiring. And for the tried and true organic-minded person, this book has it all!

5 out of 5 stars Natural Eating.......2007-08-05

If you're looking for an organic or natural foods cookbook that's practical with easy-to-prepare meals, this is the one. For about two months now, I've switched my eating from prepackaged, boxed, processed foods to all-natural and organic foods. Adjusting hasn't been hard, but I now see the value in a great cookbook. Flipping through 12 different cookbooks to find a recipe during the middle of the week isn't practical for me. This book has everything, and most ingredients are easy to find at the local co-op.

I've tried some of the other well-known and well-loved organic, healthy, and natural foods cookbooks, but they are often either too crammed with information about pickling, canning, and growing an herb garden to find anything in a rush or they have such weird ingredients I end up spending a fortune just to make a chicken salad. So far, this cookbook fits all of my needs for everyday, practical cooking.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my whole attitude about cooking.......2007-07-02

I avoided cooking whenever possible, I think I was intimidated by my lack of expertise in the kitchen. Well thanks to this cookbook I feel like I've suddenly become a chef. Everything is explained so well that even a novice like me can follow every recipe--and is easier than other cookbooks I have tried. I have more confidence, and my family is ecstatic because I have made so many delicious and NEW meals--plus we are all eating so much healthier than we did before. Highly recommend to everyone.

Book Description

In 49 B.C., the seven hundred fifth year since the founding of Rome, Julius Caesar crossed a small border river called the Rubicon and plunged Rome into cataclysmic civil war. Tom Holland’s enthralling account tells the story of Caesar’s generation, witness to the twilight of the Republic and its bloody transformation into an empire. From Cicero, Spartacus, and Brutus, to Cleopatra, Virgil, and Augustus, here are some of the most legendary figures in history brought thrillingly to life. Combining verve and freshness with scrupulous scholarship, Rubicon is not only an engrossing history of this pivotal era but a uniquely resonant portrait of a great civilization in all its extremes of self-sacrifice and rivalry, decadence and catastrophe, intrigue, war, and world-shaking ambition.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyble and Informative .......2007-09-25

Very well researched and written account of the last decades of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire. Holland connects all the dots and he is equally skilled at pure descriptive history and more insightful analysis. Could've used better maps, but all in all, an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Well Written Guide to Fall of The Repulic.......2007-09-07

Starting with the political underpinnings of the latter republican empire, Holland launches a subtle thesis of the very hand's off indirect nature of the early Roman Empire. He also then chronicles how this situation changed when the eastern territories gradually became seen not as merely political plums, centres of glory, patronage and tribute, but as economic gold mines.

Through a process of gradual intercession the Roman Senate started awarding provinces off as nothing less than the private tax farms of selected scions with special pull inside the ranks of Roman Power. The Romans became one of the first countries to "outsource" taxation -- selling it to merchant baron families or family consortiums who then made profit on the wealth they extracted from these provinces over and above what they had paid. One does not have to do too much imagining to see what could, and usually did go wrong.

The rise of the merchant class meant that the plebs could be played well by aspiring men in the inner circle of the senate and army. It meant ability to build long-term power bases for men of ambition. Punitive wars and glory gained overseas would, served with a steady ballast of patronage to loyal supporters, or just paying those who merely could be bought, ensure that Roman politics would be in for a rough ride.

That ride as Holland writes, began with the confrontation between Sulla and Marius and ended with the advent of Ceasar Augustus. The details between, the killing and intrigue, are the stuff that made legends. Ceasar being the most famous.

The last days of the republic, something that still fills us with a wonder, awe and visceral feeling that maybe, just maybe the republic will survive, is the meat in the centre of this book.

The republic we fantisize bears little reality to what happenned. Like modern-day Pakistani politics, the republic and civil society were more than once saved by those who were not willing to give into the mob -- those that usually had the backing of the army legions. All seem tainted and flawed, yet all rouges too seem to be refulgent with earthy virtue. It is this strange dicotomous world of politics that Holland in his wise and wonderful prose describes.

A "must read" for anyone wanting to know the last days of the republic and a good companion to the HBO TV series.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible hisorical account.......2007-06-26

There are very few really good histories on the late Roman Republic period. Most historians tend to focus on the Empire. Holland does an outstanding job detailing the history of this important period and keeping the reader involved. This probably does not have the scholarly value that you would get from a Gibbons type of history, but it was very engaging. Holland applies modern political and strategic concepts (for example, portraying piracy as the terrorism of the era) to this Roman period.

4 out of 5 stars Roman History in entertaining prose.......2007-06-23

I sort of stumbled across this book and picked it up because it looked interesting, and I wanted to learn a little about Roman history. The author defines the genre as "narrative history" and advises that he provides a certain amount of filling in the gaps and interpreting the historical data, but I don't think it would necessarily be considered "historical fiction." Drawing from a wide variety of sources, he strives to include as much real dialogue and commentary on the events as he can from the original sources.

Initially the book started out at a plodding pace, and I struggled to hold interest for the first ~150 pages or so, though some of the scattered events were enough to hold my attention. However, the book really takes off and becomes much more interesting as the rise of Pompey, Caesar, and Crassus unfolds. It's fascinating how the roles of the prominent orators and politicians of the day, such as Cicero and Cato shifted and changed during the years of transformation from a Republic to an Empire. Not having previously known about this significant shift in Roman governance, which takes a central theme in the book, I was intrigued by the way in which they strove to retain cherished ideals while the government was being transformed into a dictatorship.

Observing the cunning of the various characters such as Julius Caesar and many of the minor characters, as well as watching how Roman military conquests took place was interesting as well. One difficult part in the book that could have been improved by a chart or table in the appendix, was the difficulty in keeping straight the various political offices. Since the Roman Republic doesn't directly correspond to American government, it was hard to keep straight the relative roles of power held by the Senate, consuls, praetors, tribunes, pontifex maximus, etc. Finally, the extravagance and indulgence of the Romans was also something to marvel at, hopefully less out of admiration and more out of disapproval and a willingness to learn from history. Holland does a fine job of winding together the historical information into an engaging and informative account of the Roman Republic up until about 20 BC.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-20

If you watch the HBO ROME Series and also the TNT Movie Ceasar his time has come, I strongly recommend reading this book. It gives a good insight to Rome from the time of Sulla to Augustus. Makes you understand the importance of Pompey, Sulla, Cicero and others in the late republic Era. It reads easy and is well written.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a Total Novice Herder with a Total Novice Dog.......2007-03-13

I have always had an interest in herding dogs and have owned them and been around them most of my life; however I have never known anyone that had any real knowledge of training for herding, or had a dog that was trained for that matter. This book is fantastic for a total novice. It takes you carefully and "progressively" into the world of herding and explains everything from the very beginning, including the somewhat confusing language that is used to communicate with the dog while the two of you are at work. Thank you Mr. Holland!

5 out of 5 stars Herding Dogs: Progressive Training.......2007-03-04

Brand new book received in good shipping time.
This book is very informative, easy to understand and clear as to how to apply what is presented.
I believe it will help any level of sheepdog handler.

3 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2006-09-16

This book contains some really great information. The author gives details about all of the herding breeds, including many that I didn't expect. He gives insights about what each breed has been specifically bred for, i.e. driving, gathering, etc., that is very helpful in understanding your dog. A careful study of the personality types of dogs as it affects their approach to stock is also extremely helpful. He also gives several progressive excercizes that that seem very useful. Also, I appreciated the calm, quiet, but firm training style emphasized in this book.

Despite that, I was disappointed with the lack of explanation and clarity. If you are just getting started in herding, as I am, this might not be the book for you. I was often confused and feel that this book lacks enough details about the training process to be useful for beginners. Also, the author's clear preference for Border Collies as the ultimate herding dog was emphasized at points in such a way that made me a bit defensive about my "inferior" non-border collie.

4 out of 5 stars Experience is the best teacher...........2006-05-24

I suppose a person can learn to remove an appendix, fly a plane, or conduct a defense by reading a book; but I know I would prefer my surgeon, pilot, and attorney to have had some hands-on experience before practicing on me. Same thing goes for herding livestock - there just is no substitute for a good trainer who knows what they are doing. Having a background in obedience, tracking, and agility gave me no headstart in herding - and no amount of bookreading changed that. When I found a trainer who was able to read me and my dogs, communicate with us, and be fair but firm, we made great progress.

With that said, I think this book is very helpful as a supplement to practice sessions. Learning to read stock and dogs, understanding pressure and release, draws, balance points - all those concepts have to be learned by the human and there is no substitute for learning in the field, in actual practice. If a friend wanted a basic herding book to look at to see if it is something they might want to do, this would be the one book I would probably recommend. Better yet, though, would be to have this person actually come out and watch dogs working stock.

If you are doomed to be an armchair shepherd, then this book is fine. Otherwise, your money is better invested in a herding instinct test, a stock handling class, or a day spent observing at a herding training facility. Books are an adjunct, at best, to learning to work with your dog in herding.

4 out of 5 stars Gone to the dogs.......2006-02-23

This book is just the thing for someone who is interested in training a herding dog or just want to find out how it is done. This deals with herding sheep, but I was left wanting to know if this training could be used on other types on livestock? If you want to go herding this book wil herd you in the right direction.
