A well-written, wide-ranging book.......2006-07-20
This is a well-written book which ranges in presentation of shipwrecks and their treasures from ancient wrecks to a few 20th century ships (Titanic, Bismark). Lots of adventure and tales of the search for treasure ships without getting bogged down in minutae. The ships range through time since man began plying the seas and across the world. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to you. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I would have liked MORE pictures. It is loaded with pictures, but there was plenty of space to include more!
Book Description
This book holds appeal for divers, laymen, romantic, and dolphin lovers alike, regarding man's spiritual connection to the sea.

Water World.......2004-09-10
I first heard of the late Jacques Mayol from the now classic cult movie "The Big Blue". Judging by this encyclopedic work, the real Jacques Mayol was a more interesting character than his celluloid image. "Homo Delphinus" is clearly a work of love and a beautiful book. It is published in a large glossy format with stunning photos. It is difficult to classify the book as it is a combination of science, semi-science, ecology, philosophy and mysticism. Mr. Mayol is successful in producing a touching work that summarizes his life long romance with the aquatic world and his hopes and visions for the future.
As I said, the book is encyclopedic - Mr. Mayol covers a wide range of topics- and this is also one of the weaknesses of the book. At times I felt that the author was rambling a bit. Perhaps a good editor would have helped Mayol be more focused.
The translation is not always smooth. From the book itself it is unclear if the translation was done from the original French, the Italian version or both.
I was very interested to read that Mayol did not take kindly to the fact that freediving has become a type of extreme sport. He feels that this is dangerous and misconstrues the real spirit of apnea diving.
I would recommend this book to anybody interested in the oceans, marine mammals or diving.
If I could, I would have rated the book 4 1/2 stars.
Disappointing.......2002-03-22
I am a great admirer of Mr. Mayol. Since a child I felt always impressed about his contributions to science and conservationism. However, I just felt so disappointed when I read Homo Delphinus. Through it, he tries to cover many topics, but in such a superficial way that it made me anxious for not getting into any point at all. And his theory about the "homo delphinus" is only a collection of cliches and general thoughts.
With respect to the book itself, it lacks the quality of modern books and the photography has been poorly incorporated.
I am sure many people will love this book, but I expected far more from such a remarkable man as Jacques Mayol.
A MUST.......2002-01-01
Being a diver and a fan of the sea, having met Jacques Mayol the guru of breath-hold dives in Oct 2001 in Elba and upon learning that this famous book was now available in English, the next day I procured one from this site. Having since learnt of Jacques's passing on the 22nd of Dec 2001 I feel that anyone who dives or simply loves the sea and its creatures should get hold of this very remarkable book - before it goes out of production.
A fantastic book with lots of beautiful photographs that takes the reader through Jacques' early life, his reactions in the form of questions and answers to the movie "The Big Blue" and his techniques on apnea, his travels and inventions and his views on the purity of the ocean and man's endeavour to demolish anything remotely beautiful. A fantastic book to have and to keep for future generations of a man who seems to much prefer living with the creatures of the sea than with homo sapiens on land.
interaction between one man and the sea.......2000-04-19
Jacques Mayol launches first book in the United States
Idelson-Gnocchi Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Jacques Mayol's first book published in the United States, "Homo Delphinus - The Dolphin within Man". This large format, gorgeously photographed volume, is the culmination of a lifetime of personal oceanic experiences by Jacques Mayol, easily one of the most accomplished free divers of his or any other generation.
Jacques Mayol, holder of a dozen world breathhold diving records, was the first man to descend to 100 meters (330 feet), a feat he accomplished in 1976. He followed this with yet another record breaking drop to 105 meters (346 feet) at the age of 56. A Frenchman born in China, Jacques Mayol now splits his time between homes on the island of Elba in Italy, the island of South Caicos in the Turks & Caicos and a full life in Japan. He is a practitioner of Yoga, Zen and other Oriental life philosophies, essential disciplines he incorporates into his free diving practices.
Homo Delphinus demonstrates an exceptional personal vision of the interaction between one man and the sea. It also provides a superb explanation of how the separate disciplines of science and philosophy come together to allow these extraordinary free diving explorations of the ocean. This theme goes hand in hand with Jacques' deep abiding love for the ocean and it's inhabitants, particularly dolphins. He spends much of the book exploring both the affection and the similarities existing between man and dolphin, a heartfelt search for "the dolphin dormant in all of us".
The adventures in Jacques' life were chronicled in the landmark Luc Bresson film 'The Big Blue'. He has been the subject of numerous national and international broadcast interviews and print features. Jacques is also one of the world's leading authorities on 'apnea', a phenomenal physical discipline which reduces heart rate and respiratory functions, thus
allowing him to perform his remarkable diving feats. Free diving aficionados worldwide recognize and thank him for his insight, his developments of the sport and for his accomplishments. At 72 years of age, Jacques still revels in the ocean, swimming and diving virtually every available day.
Idelson-Gnocchi Publishing is based in Napoli, Italy where it has been publishing specialized Scientific Publications since 1908. The company now has offices in both Italy as well as in Florida.
Exciting........2000-04-19
"how exciting it was to read about how it felt to come up from a dive, to have his own experience written down on the page, just the way he experienced".

Customer Reviews:
Great general resource........2007-03-27
While the book does not "dive" too deep into any location, it does a great job of giving you a brief on what to expect. The quick reference areas that provide quick reference are great.
While the book will offer limited details if you know where you are going, if you doing a general search for your next dive it is perfect.
The Ultimate Guide.......2007-01-15
Actually, an "ultimate guide" would have a greater variety of more detailed information for planning a trip. That said, it is a gorgeous book. Gave it as a gift to my dive buddy/husband, and he loved it. Great ideas for places to go that are off the beaten path.
Dive: The Ultimate Guide to 60 of the World's Top Dive Locations.......2007-01-12
This book has great descriptions of the selected dive sites and excellent pictures. It is however one man's opinion of the best dive sites and it doesn't specify exactly where the dive sites are so it serves only as a planning guide and does not help locate the dive site.
Good world overview of top dive destinations.......2006-08-23
This book has beautiful photography and covers most of the world's great dive destinations. Considering that it is primarily a picture book, it also offers a good deal of information on the classic dives at each location. I liked that it included information on water temperature, weather and seasons, dive difficulty, and local travel tips. While it doesn't provide enough information to plan a complete trip, I feel it does provide the right kind of depth to choose a destination. Another reviewer complained that the maps left a little to be desired. In my opinion, that level of detail is more appropriate for a destination travel planning book, such as Lonely Planet or Frommers. I don't know of another book that offers as much information on dive destinations on the world scale.
Nice book.......2005-09-05
The Ultimate Guide is well written and the pictures are nice and sharp so the book is very beautiful to look at, but its weakness rests on VERY uninformative maps! All in all the book is worth getting, IMO.
Book Description
Unarmed, underwater, under fire-they went to war, and began the legend of the navy seals.Facing a fanatical, dug-in enemy in Europe and in the Pacific, U.S. planners turned to a new kind of warrior: daring swimmers who could knock out mines, map out enemy beaches, and pave the way for Allied naval assaults. With a few extraordinary and brave men, the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams went to war. Now, a founder and legendary commander of UDT-1 takes you into the world of the underwater soldiers-the bullet-ripped surf, the mortar-pounded beaches, and the treacherous, frigid seas. This is the inside story of a unique breed of warrior-and the bloody battles they helped win.

Discovering the UDT.......2006-02-02
For a son of a former UDT this book opened my eyes wider than ever before to the dangers faced by my father and his shipmates of the UDT. The valor exhibited by these men while operating in broad dayight under emeny fire to aid in the landing of larger invasion forces is staggering. This book is excellent reading for anyone interested in one of our nations truely elite fighting units "the Underwater Demolition Teams".
Recommended.......2005-12-15
This book is the standard bearer for books about the UDTs. Well researched but written from personal experience, Fane does an excellent job of retelling the exploits of these admirable sailors. Recommended for anyone interested in NSW or WWII.
Book Description
Until just a few decades ago, very little was known about the phylogenetical old, but very successful group of sharks, rays and chimaeras (ratfish). Since then, a lot of information has become available on the 1,000 or so living species of cartilaginous fishes. Naturally, the reef dwellers among them are better known than their deep-sea relatives. Hence the focus of species selected for this unique identification guide has been on those sharks and rays inhabiting shallow water. This makes it an indispensable guide (240 species on more than 600 color photos) for diver and visitor to public aquaria. In addition to including some little known and never published species as well as fossil forms, there is also a discussion of relevant topics such as the utilization of cartilaginous fishes by man, and their threatened extinction.
Book Description
The newest addition to Footprint's burgeoning series of activity guides, Diving the World, takes the underwater adventurer on a magical tour of many of the world's top dives. From the pristine reefs of Papua New Guinea to the warm waters of the Belize Barrier Reef and the legendary wrecks of Micronesia's Truk Lagoon, there's something for everyone. The guide also features personal opinions and anecdotes from both experts and other divers, as well as recommendations of what to do and see on dry land.

5 stars! Wish I could give it 10.......2007-01-13
Wow! Fabulous book, fabulous info, fabulous photos, just simply fabulous!
If you are a scuba diver, you need this book. It will inspire you to visit places you have seen only in travel magazines. This book is big and beefy, too. Not a typical travel book, this book gives pages and pages of good info and lush photos of ALL of the best diving destinations known.
Great guide to the best diving destinations.......2006-09-06
This is an excellent guide for choosing a dive destination. My wife and I have had the good fortune to travel to a number of excellent dive locations in the past several years and this guide gets it right. Be forewarned, it makes no effort to be a comprehensive guide to the entire world (for that, try Dive by Monty Halls). But it does cover the most intriguing dive locations, so it is heavy on Asia and the South Pacific and light on the Caribbean and has no coverage of temperate destinations, such as California or British Columbia.
It is more than a dive guide. It does cover the primary dive sites for each location, but the real value of this book is it's recommendations on accommodations and other activities. It is perfect for choosing a vacation destination and to get your planning started.
Diving the world.......2006-06-29
My wife Sue & I have been very lucky to dive some of the best diving locations in the world, all of which are featured in this excellent and very readable book. First of all the descriptions are spot on and you can tell that the text is taken from the experience of actually doing the dive or visiting the area, not just researching it (unlike so many guides). The book is not just a travel or dive guide, it's more like a wish list to the best diving in the world. If you are lucky enough to be able to do this sort of diving then I think owning this book is about as important as owning a mask.

Stories of Ships, How they Sank, and Diving to Them.......2005-03-22
Although the sub-title of this book implies that it is about diving, I find that this book is more about the ships themselves, and how they sank than about diving on them. And there seem to be so many books like this one on sunken ships that you have to kind of have to be surprised to see that there are any ships still afloat.
This book pretty much covers the world. It has sunken Roman ships in the Med. Spanish treasure ships bring back gold and silver from the Ne World. Ships from various wars seem to litter the ground in places like Scapa Flow. There is much more coverage of the Atlantic areas than of the Pacific.
Mr. Fine clearly loves the ocean and its collenction of sunken ships. It is clear that he has carefully researched the ships he is writing about. I found the book hard to put down.
Showcases the most exciting of his discoveries.......2005-02-07
Blend an award-winning photojournalist with a scuba diving expertise and you have the elements of an intriguing story in Lost On The Ocean Floor: Diving The World's Ghost Ships. Fine has explored and documented not just a few but many of the sunken fleets of the world for most of his adult life, so Lost On The Ocean Floor showcases the most exciting of his discoveries, not just a few. Science blends with archaeology and drama to create a title which will appeal to general interest readers as much as ocean archaeologists and fellow discoverers.
LOST ON THE OCEAN FLOOR : DIVING THE WORLD'S GHOST SHIPS.......2005-01-05
I was really disatified with this book. I just can`t really find much good to say about it. The pictures, the few that was in book were more about cannonballs and jewelry that were found on some ships. The author wrote alot about how some ships were built but didn't tell how some of the ship even looked under water or the damage they had taken to sink.In my opinion the sunken ships in the pacific ocean were not covered enough. If you are interested in sunken ships I would avoid this book at all costs.

An excellent guide to current U-boat wreck sites........1998-12-23
This book is one of the 3 Pisces "Dive Into History" series and is a very well researched and informative book on present-day U-boats wrecks complete with excellent underwater color photography, line drawings and wartime historical photographs. It covers the events leading up to and the circumstances of the sinkings of several U-boats. From the standpoint of the maritime archaeologist, the U-boat historian, or anyone interested in the history of war beneath the waves, especially technical scuba divers, it is a must. The other 2 books in the series I have read, "Warships" and "U.S. Submarines" are equally essential and well done. No submarine book collection is complete without Volumes No.2 and No.3 (U.S. Submarines and U-Boats).
I have 32 different books concerning the U-boats in WWI and WWII in my collection, and some of the most striking images of U-boats are to be found in this book.
