Picture Dictionary.......2007-09-24
I was very pleased with the product, and I was pleased with how quickly I received it.
No pronunciation guide under the pictures.......2007-09-04
Nice idea, but it does only half the work. It shows you how to write the words and sentences, but not how to pronounce them, which is extremely important for ESL students. To see how a word is pronounced, you have to check the index, which works just like a regular, non-picture dictionary.
Excellent for Teaching or Tutoring Multiskill Classes.......2007-05-28
A practical took for tutoring and teaching ESL students of multiple levels. Often, a picture really is worth a thousand words - especially if the student doesn't know a thousand words!
Besides, every single object has a name... and sometimes I can't think of the precise word. This book solves that problem. You ask students to turn to the appropriate page, and at least buy some time. You will almost all find the word and object.
By the way, this book can also be an excellent supplement text for intermediate classes. In a better world of more and smaller ESL classes, you would find this class sets of this textbook in Beginning, High Beginning, Intermediate Low and even Intermediate High classes. Flexible, informative, and practical, the Oxford Picture Dictionary remains a must for ESL programs, instructors, and tutors.
My ESL thinks it's great!.......2005-08-06
I used this with a group of adult students from West Africa. They were the ones who decided to purchase the book out of their own pockets because they found it so helpful. They speak French and very little English. I do not speak French. The book was quite valuable.
Great .......2005-04-25
This is great for English language learners. It's organized by sections and is easy to understand. The only drawback is it's ehtnocentric towards the USA and this wouldnt be good for english learners living in Britain.

Customer Reviews:
Not really what I was wanted.......2007-07-18
This product is very difficult to use. The supposed russian phrases are not there. This is just a plain dictionary in 2 languages. Not at all what it is advertised as having in it!
Not what a top of the line dictionary should be.......2007-06-09
I've had this for a short while and have already discovered several words missing, that sent me scurrying back to my Katzner, where the words were clearly defined. Katzner appears to have more phrases and usage examples too. The Oxford also feels cheap for its price - the paper and nondescript fonts and page design are disappointing. Only a couple of pages of extras on grammar, verb conjugations, and letter samples. The Oxford is good to have, but if I had to carry only one Russian dictionary around, it would be Katzner.
Excellent, well-rounded dictionary!.......2007-04-01
Usually my reviews pertain to classical-music since that's my biggest field of interest by far! However, of all the several dictionaries I've so far been consulting relative to various translations and other work that these days has necessitated my dealing with the Russian language, this most certainly is the best! Pocket and concise dictionaries just won't hack it with my type of work; and this one truly is worth it!!! It has a good word-database as well as lots of expressions covered; also good is that it gives the stress for all the Russian words (VERY VITAL in that language!!). Most highly recommended!
best russian english dictionary.......2006-05-20
I have many Russian English dictionaries, including some you can only get in Russia and some written entirely in Russian and this is by far the most complete and helpful dictionary I have. I use it almost exclusively.
I must confess though that I don't use the English-> Russian part very often. I'm usually translating from Russian. I usally learn new words from movies and books and am not looking up so many words just from English. In correspondence I use it and it always has what I need.
You can look up some of the most clever dialogue in films with this dictionary.
Of course, a dictionary is not a grammar book and there are stylistic things about Russian that create ennumerable combinations of useage that a dictionary cannot address.
There are some complaints I have but they are not addressed by any other dictionaries I have seen. For example, the ppp is troublesome because it's hard get the stress right and they try to put all the most common ones in there but they miss them sometimes but so do all the other dictionaries. In that case you have to guess from grammar rules or consult the real dictionaries for such that are written totally in Russian.
The only places it fails me are in situations where you need to go to a Russian dictionary that is written entirely in Russian. There are a few classics used there. It would not be possible in general to create such a dictionary for English speakers because the assumptions about language familiarity and grammar could not be met by any but fairly advanced users and in that case, why not just use the actual dictionary Russian speakers use?
If you want to buy one dictionary, get this one. Don't get the concise version though, spend the money and get the full version. It's worth it!
Good customer service but slow delivery.......2005-09-12
It took nearly a month to receive the item, but they were very good at responding to my inquiries.

Customer Reviews:
Slightly bizarre.......2001-02-01
I have read the other reviews and based my purchase on them. I was greatly disappointed by several big "holes". First, there is no full alphabetical listing of vowels and consonants, upper and lowercase letters. Second, there is no phonetic pronuciation in either the English or Russian halves. You would have to be a second year student to know the pronunciations already OR have to try and write out each word letter-by-letter. Not useful at all for carrying along on a trip to the CIS or Russia.
The Bible of Russian dictionaries.......2000-04-26
Easily the best Russian dictionary I've ever used, and I've been using them for 50 years. There are so many examples of how the word is used that it's fun just as a casual read. You'll learn a lot more than just a simple definition.
Fantastic and comprehensive dictionary.......1999-11-01
This dictionary is the best one available for all anyone who is studying the Russian language. It is easy to use and has all the abreviations and everything else you could need.
The Oxford Russian Dictionary.......1997-10-03
This book is very complete and helpful. I now know the Russian language well.

Customer Reviews:
It is a dictionary.......2007-07-12
It is hard to review a dictionary. I cannot verify all 45,000 entries are accurate, there isn't a plotline you judge or characters to hate. It is a book full of words in English and Cyrillic Russian.
However, I can tell you how useful it is. This is the size of a supermarket paperback novel, so it is highly portable. To make a dictionary this small and affordable, you have to sacrifice on a little readability. I haven't found anything that is unreadable, but some words need to be squinted at longer than others.
If this is the only dictionary you can afford, you will do just fine with it. However, I will carry this one in my laptop bag and search for a more readable version to keep on my desk.
Good content, difficult to read.......2007-06-19
Since Russian can be a very difficult language, don't expect to get much use out of this dictionary if it's your only reference-- you will need a book on grammar and usage for the entries to make much sense. However, with some very basic knowledge of Russian grammar, this is a very helpful reference, especially for writing in early stages of learning Russian.
Included in the back is are the rough English equivalents of the Cyrillic letters. This is especially helpful if, like me, you learned the Cyrillic alphabet primarily in groups of related sounds, rather than in alphabetical order.
However, even as pocket dictionaries go, the print in this one is very small and blurry-- not well printed at all. To an English speaker very small differences in the appearance of some Cyrillic letters can make a difference in pronunciation, and if you haven't known the Cyrillic alphabet long and are unfamiliar with the variations of some letters in type, the poor printing can make this dictionary quite difficult to use at first.
The Oxford Russian Dictionary.......2007-05-17
This book is good for those who speak English and have a good English background. However, this book is not convenient for kids or new learners. It has no pronouncing tips of words which is important for everybody. Personally I would not suggest buy this book. It is better to buy dictionary with pronouncing tips. When I bought this book I did not know that it has no word pronouncing tips. In addition it would be a good idea for sellers to give detailed information about their products. My family found this book inconvenient to use.
Great reference book........2007-03-10
Of course, like mentioned below, the entire russian language is basically phonetic. Knowing the letters greatly helps when using this reference guide. It has helped me alot since i have purchased it. I am currently taking a russian course and so far have not found a word missing from this book. The only problem i have with this book at all is the mention of what each letter sounds like in the back. I have a better conversion, it was given to me by my instructor. However, if i needed to, i could use the sound conversion in the back. This produst is overall a great product, and russian is a wonderful language.
Very good, but I hear it's not the best.......2007-01-02
When I began dating a woman from Russian, I decided that having a good Russian dictionary would be a good idea. This is the best one I could find. I hear there's an even better that was once published by Penguin, but is no longer available (I can't imagine why they'd stop making the best). My girlfriend says this Oxford edition is very good and we use it a lot.

Customer Reviews:
Not really for English speakers........2007-08-28
Although its great to have pictures and words together, especially for those of us who learn faster with visual aids, this book is difficult to use for native English speakers. Why? Because accent marks are not provided, nor declensions, nor the two dots over the "e" that distinguish between the letters "yo" and "ye." In other words, in order to benefit from this dictionary, an English speaker has to look up every word in a separate dictionary to find out all the above information when learning the words. Otherwise, what is learned will be only part of what is needed. So, since English is my native language, I give this book 2 stars. It would be great to find a book like this one meant for learners of Russian.
Fabulous Quick Reference.......2007-08-15
I took Russian for nine years in the Chicago Public Schools, and this was one of my greatest references. Granted, it is not meant to be the ONLY tool a student of Russian will use. I compare this book to Richard Scarry's Greatest Word Book Ever, except with Russian words for everything pictured. And don't be fooled by the "Picture Dictionary" title. This is not merely for children. I am 24 years old, and trying to re-learn some Russian, and am still using this great book. This would be a great reference for any student of Russian.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-01
As a native English-speaking, beginning student of Russian language, I am finding this a very useful book. The format is great for me because I learn well visually. Each page is a busy picture (e.g. "In the Living Room", "Outdoor Activities") with relevant items in the picture numbered. Under the picture is a legend to provide the name of each object from the picture in English and Russian (in Cyrillic). It is a fantastic resource because there are so many objects and situations: just about every action and activity in the house, most of the animals in the zoo, etc...
For native Russian speakers, the book provides English pronunciations. Unfortunately, the same is not given for the Russian words (though once I master Cyrillic, I imagine this will be unneccesary.) Overall, this is a great reference for English and Russian speakers to build their vocabulary and easily answer their own questions as they come up.
very helpful part of a language program.......2006-12-13
As an ESL tutor I simply love these books. Each page provides a lesson's worth of vocab for practice in sentences. The latter pages (eg. prepositions) are less useful when tutoring someone illiterate in their own language, especially if the tutor is not bilingual, but because the pictures are so clear, even point-and-say usually works. True, these books don't have any pronunciation guides for Russians learning English or Americans learning Russian, but they are an excellent tool for tutoring; I don't expect everything from a picture dictionary that I would from interactive language software.

Wonderful book!! Saw it first in Spanish/English version. Was very happy to find it in Russian for my wife. It has been very helpful to her.

Customer Reviews:
Very Thorough English -to-Hebrew Dictionary.......2007-07-24
This is a fairly large Book. It has every slang/common-day word you can think of, with many different meanings/usages for each word. Just wish it went from Hebrew-to-English, so I could find the meaning of specific Hebrew words.
Excellent .......2006-07-09
Superb English -Hebrew dictionary. I wish there was an equivalent one in Hebrew-English. Very clear and includes the many meanings and uses of each word translated.
Very good.......2006-04-04
I tried 2 other dictionaries before this one. It's very good if not excellent
The Oxford English-Hebrew Dictionary.......2005-10-09
I found it very useful. The large font is also very helpful.
A phenomenal dictionary, perhaps not for beginners.......2002-04-13
This is a phenomenal dictionary. Some things that make it so great:
1) Huge numbers of usage examples, at a wide range of levels of
formality. The examples give information that's lacking in most dictionaries, such as which preposition(s) to use with a given verb. They also contain a wealth of idiomatic constructions. I'm amazed at how much time I've spent just browsing through the examples in this book.
2) Excellent differentiation between multiple meanings of a word. If there are multiple Hebrew words that correspond to a given English word, they are very clearly differentiated, often with examples that further clarify when to use which (see above).
3) The vocabulary covered is VERY comprehensive and covers all ranges of style, from literary to colloquial (including, I was happy to discover, many obscenities).
This dictionary also is not necessarily for beginners. Some reasons that it's not necessarily for beginners:
1) It's English-to-Hebrew only; if you're looking for a very first dictionary, you might do better with a bilingual one.
2) It doesn't list the gender of nouns, nor does it list irregular plurals. (Gender and plurals can generally be figured out, if you know the rules, but it's nice to have them made explicit.)
Since this dictionary is published by Oxford, the English is overwhelmingly British. This is most obvious in the fact that many British idiomatic expressions are included, while American ones seem less well-represented...

- This dictionary gives the serious student a powerful tool.

This dictionary gives the serious student a powerful tool........1999-12-07
The Oxford Russian-English Dictionary was my first real dictionary as a Russian Language student. Taking advice from a personal hunch I bought the book before I ever stepped into a university lesson in Russian about three and a half years ago. This dictionary has served me extremely well particularly in terms of translations excercises. I personally consider this dictionary to be a fabulous reference tool for anyone student or professor serious about the study of Russian with a focus on finding the most authoritative and accurate translation of over 80,000 words and/or phrases from Russian to English. Please consider purchasing this dictionary if you speak English as a native language and truly are serious about your studies of Russian. The only drawback to this dictionary comes from the fact that it forces the user to have a good sense of the meaning that he or she is after since it provides such a huge variety on certain translations from Russian to English which is quite understandable considering the difficulty in what many term {comparitive linguistics} i.e. (word to word) translation. I hope that anyone who wants to add to his or her vocabularly will consider purchasing this dictionary for I believe that it will help tremendously with this endeavor.
The best Russian dictionary on the market.......1998-11-12
Oxford is the standard. There is no better Russian-English dictionary available. Grammar forms are provided; examples and idioms are given. Appendices include abbreviations and geographical placenames.

Customer Reviews:
efficient, useful book.......2005-01-19
I'm learning French from CDs, and I'm finding this book indispensable. Every word I've needed to look up so far I've been able to find quickly, with minimal back-and-forth page flipping. It has many helpful stub entries pointing to main entries. Some common, core words have expanded entries. The authors have left out distracting information that would be relevant only to experts, and used the space for useful stuff for beginners like me. It's great. UPDATE: This dictionary is becoming less useful to me as a reference as I progress. It is a *starter* dictionary after all. It's still useful though.
I wish I'd had this book in college!.......2000-10-19
I was so thrilled to find this book! I just wish I'd had it in college, but - oh, well, now I'm going to catch up on what I missed in college! This book is a must-have for beginners learning French! Obviously, it has only the vocabulary you would need for the first two or so years of French, but all the confusing, tricky things are beautifully and clearly explained, to get you over the first hurdles! The entries are listed in both French and English, with examples of usage. I even bought the Oxford Starter German Dictionary as well, because I had so many false starts and difficulties trying to learn German. I feel confident that I will now sort out the problems I had with these languages. This is a great concept!!!
Makes French very pleasant to learn.......2000-02-16
This French-English and English-French dictionary is very well-designed and easy to use. Keywords are highlighted, which makes you find what you need very fast. The translations don't have any confusing grammar-specific abbreviations, all the information is very clear. Special symbols show the points to pay attention to. Thematic boxes are dedicated to the often used words and everyday topics (talking about time, numbers, aches and pains etc.). The book doesn't cover all the French words and cannot be used as a grammar reference, but it has everything the good dictionary should contain. A must have for those learning French from scratch.

Customer Reviews:
Good Dictionary, Terrible Binding.......2007-02-17
This dictionary is excellent. I rarely find words which aren't listed, and the definitions including common phrases make finding the correct translation fairly easy. But, as others have stated, the pages started falling out almost immediately. It doesn't seem to be just this dictionary either, as the Russian course I purchased at the same time (Oxford's Take Off In Russian) also has its pages falling out. I hope Oxford does something about this as it really takes away from their otherwise excellent books.
Another reviewer stated the dictionary doesn't have the alphabet, but mine definitely includes one as part of the pronunciation guide in the beginning. Russian pronunciation is much more straightforward than English, so pronunciations aren't listed for Russian words.
5 stars for content, 1 star for binding.
Way too big!.......2005-08-12
I actually didn't use this dictionary. I ordered it along with the Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary. The "Pocket" Oxford Russian Dictionary was as big as a regular dictionary, so I returned it. The Langenscheidt lives up to the title "pocket" dictionary. I also like the vinyl cover which seems like it will be very durable. Buy it instead!
Excellent value!.......2002-04-22
This pocket Russian dictionary is one of the best that I've used.
It shows all perfective and imperfective verbs, it includes irregular verb endings
and indicates the accent (udarenie) of all Russian words.
I disagree with the poor rating given by a reader that complained about the lack of Cyrillic transliteration.
This dictionary is for people who ALREADY know the Cyrillic alphabet.
A great dictionary at a great price!
It's impossible.......2002-02-25
It's impossible for anyone who does not know the Cyrillic alphabet to cope with this dictionary, as for some reason it does not devote any space to showing the English translation of the Cyrillic letters. Also, the print is fine and pale.
I concede that this is one book I should have looked at before purchasing. As they say, let the buyer beware.
Nice Content But Too Delicate.......2001-06-14
I found the content excellent, however I agree with the other reviewer that it is poorly bound. Mine fell apart after three weeks. On a trip pocket dictionaries like this will be in daily use and take quite a pounding. Regrettably, this book is just not up to it.
