Excellent Resource.......2007-09-27

This book is an excellent resource for an ESL class or for someone learning Spanish. The entries are accompanied by pictures and organized in a logical way for reference. Like most Spanish Dictionaries, this is more geared towards Spain, but good for Latin American Spanish too. We live in Mexico and are learning Spanish. We refer to it often. It's fun to just browse through as well. Excellent investment.

Great noun resource for students of English.......2007-05-28

I'm an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and use these dictionaries in class. My students inevitably want to buy their own copies and are delighted to find that they are available in bilingual editions for many languages.

The categorical organization of the dictionaries and the inclusion of many everyday items makes them very valuable for those students who are living in the U.S. (and presumably other Western English-speaking countries). My only criticism would be that they don't include any computer-related terms; this could be addressed in a new edition.

Speaking of which, I haven't switched to the so-called "New Oxford Picture Dictionary" because it has far fewer vocabulary items.

Despite the bilingual editions, I don't consider these books to be as useful for English speakers trying to learn a foreign language as for English learners living in the U.S., because the content and categories reflect shopping, homes, services, clothes, and so forth as they are experienced in the U.S. and similar countries.

Another potential area of disappointment is that the OPD should not be one's only English dictionary, since, being pictorial, it is suited to nouns but not to verbs or concepts. As a noun dictionary, it's excellent.

I have not used the extensive additional teaching materials that are available for these dictionaries.

I work in a restaurant staffed with mostly spanish-speaking workers so I bought this book to assist in communication. The organization of terms and the comprehensive nature of the book make it invaluable. My Mexican co-workers want copies for themselves!

A Great Resource.......2006-11-11

Trying to learn even the basic rudiments of a new language requires much memorization and practice. Good visual aids are a must unless you are especially gifted in languages (or grew up abroad). This dictionary is a great aid to learning important everyday vocabulary. The organization by themes (food, health, clothing, work, everyday language in different settings) make it easy to use if staying in a Spanish speaking country for a while. I am currently enrolled in a beginning college level class and use it for review and new words. The visuals are easier for me to remember than straight flash cards, although I use both.

This is an excelent book to learn a lot of vocabulary you can have imagine,
the only problem you need to scroll up and down, left and right to see the whole image, this was corrected on new release.

GOOD FOR ADULTS LEARNING SPANISH .......2007-02-07

I don't normally review any items on Amazon but I must take the time to review this picture dictionary. I am 57 years old and using the dictionary for myself. I like it because the vocabulary words are grouped by subject: the kitchen, eating out, the bedroom and items relating to those subjects.

I have found this dictionary quite enjoyable. I love studying Spanish even though my memory is not what it used to be.

Excellent Resource.......2006-03-21

As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource. I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner). This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish.......2006-01-03

I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

This is not a good book for young children - too many things to look at on one page...EXCELLENT resource for adults and teens, though, who are eager to increase vocabulary and are confident with pronunciation. I use it a lot in my Spanish classes, and even as a reference, when wanting to boost the vocabulary list for the week.

For the younger child, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD.

Excellent resource! I highly recommend this dictionary as it appears to have EVERYTHING in it! Even "kitchen" and "sink"... jokes aside, I find this book to be the perfect answer to all my spanish/english definition problems... What makes this dictionary unique is not only its exhaustive collection of words, but also the correspondence writings in its middle. It tells you precisely how to write a correspondence in Spanish (and English) including dates, openings, closings, how to address the envelope and more... It even has examples and instructions (with pictures) of how to create a professional job application, how to write a letter of complaint, how to write a check, how to request a catalog... This dictionary has everything! A must have for language students!! Too bulky to put in your backpack, but not too big for a bookshelf!

This is a terrific dictionary used in conjunction with the Oxford Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary for hard to locate technical words. The Cassell's Spanish Dictionary can lead to a lot of imprecise translations in your readings, but it's useful in composition as a thesaurus.

The Best Bilingual General Dictionary in English and Spanish.......2002-03-26

This Oxford Dictionary is a true gem. It is the best general English Spanish dictionary written to date. In addition to having excellent meaning discrimination, it often includes the informal register in its explanations as well as the formal registers.

It is a tremendous resource for really understanding the nuances and shades of meaning between different synonyms and expressions.

As a translator, professor, and bilingual lexicographer, I am truly deeply impressed with this masterpiece.

The best dictionary.......2002-03-18

This is by far the best dictionary I own. Not only does it specify a term's area of usage, but it also translates numerous idiomatic expressions. It is a bit bulky to take to class (but not impossible-I manage to), but the contents make it perfect for doing Spanish composition homework as well. Overall, the perfect bilingual dictionary

Excellent dictionary. Thorough, with many examples for each usage. Extremely useful for grammar, and, of course, spelling. It's a tome, though-- not something that one would want to carry around.

A bit disappointed.......2007-09-23

After 10 years of hard use, including 8 trips to Mexico, the binding of my first edition of this dictionary was beginning to get loose. It has been a thoroughly satisfying book so I bought the new 3rd edition and within the first year the binding is already coming apart. This is a big book and needs to be really well put together to stand up. Unfortunately it is not built strong enough and clearly will not last like the old one has.

It is a good product which basically mimics the print version of the dictionary. It is easy to use. I'd say for anyone who needs a comprehensive portable spanish dictionary it is a must have for the price.

Dictionary/CD-ROM.......2007-04-07

I purchased the dictionary/CD-ROM package and have been very impressed. The CD-ROM does not need the CD every time and is very easy to search. It is NOT a translator, so you need to know every base/root word. It also doesn't have phrases, for example you have to look up "qué" and look through all the meanings to find "qué tal." If the program is open, you can also double click any word anywhere (web page, document, etc.) and it will go to that word in the dictionary.

The book contains everything imaginable, and I haven't been through all of it. It even has internet lingo in Spanish. I have found myself using the CD much more than the actual dictionary. The CD by itself is fine on it's own, but only for $15 more or so I bought the hard copy dictionary just in case. Great product.

Practical, Useful, & Wonderful!.......2007-05-20

This book is an excellent tool for those learning Mandarin Chinese, or those learning English. All the material is practical, useful vocabulary that many people somehow skipped while studying a foreign language.

The only bad thing about this book is it is 100% traditional characters. If you are not familiar with traditional characters, and you are not willing to become familiar with them, then don't buy this book. Otherwise, it is an invaluable investment in your Mandarin studies. One other thing: Pinyin is not provided, but I think it is better not to have the pinyin, so that you don't use it as a crutch. Fortunately, I have native Chinese-speaking friends who can write the pinyin in my book, if desired. If you don't have someone who can do this, and you rely heavily on pinyin, don't buy the book.

Perhaps this book is for serious learners only. If you are an advanced student, you do not need pinyin 90% of the time. Many people may not like this book due to the fact that there is no pinyin. I find this book to be absolutely wonderful! I have studied Chinese for 2 years, and can express myself in several complex situations, and yet I was never taught some basic, daily words that are included in this book. It is a must-buy for all Mandarin learners!

Ordering a second copy.......2007-09-06

When I decided to learn Spanish I asked advice from a bilingual friend who goes to my church. She recommended this book. It has been great. Now, my son needs a Spanish/English English/Spanish dictionary for school. I'm ordering one for him, not only because it's easy to read and understand the way El Espanol congugates verbs and the words change from masculine to feminine, but because it's a great size to carry around.

This book is very deceptive. I wanted to get a book on creole
called "the basic oxford picture dictionary English/creole"
and I ended getting this one instead. the two book have the same cover but they are very diferent. one does not have anything to do with creole but the title start the same and the cover look the same. this can be confusing for first time buyer of such a language book. I know that there are a lot of people out there probably making the same mistake. this should be fixed so one does not blow there hard earn cash on mailing back and forth.

Although you could never tell it by reading the other reviews, this book has NOTHING to do with Creole. It is an English picture book - you see a picture of a ladder and it's referenced to the word "ladder". It's a lot of pictures and the English word for each item. Before you buy, look at the cover and excepts - I didn't.

I think what you need is "The Basic Oxford Picture Dictionary (English/Haitian Creole Edition).

Just don't buy this book unless you're trying to teach or learn basic English.

Looking back, I think what I needed was "The Basic Oxford Picture Dictionary (English/Haitian Creole Edition). But the way you're pointed to this English version when you search on "Haiti" is misleading - no, make that incorrect.

Please don't make the same mistake I made and buy this book - that is unless you're trying to teach or learn basic English.

Nice Adjunct to more comprehensive Creole texts.......2001-12-30

Attractive, detailed pictures and clear labeling make this a great- and cheap- adjunct to more comprehensive texts in learning very basic Creole. It is primarily useful in helping you to learn the names of common objects and simple actions. There is no instruction regarding grammar and usage. If you are in a situation in which you need a quick introduction for an upcoming trip to Haiti, I would pair this with the "Survival Haitian" booklet and cassette available from the Kansas University bookstore website. If you are in for the long haul and want comprehensive instruction, try the "Ann Pale Kreyol" text and tapes and the Haitian Creole Learners Dictionary put out by the Creole Institute at Indiana University.

I realize that this is an ESL text, but I have been using this picture dictionary since fall of 1997 to teach Haitian Kreyol to Medical and Divinity students and faculty at Duke University, as well as to youth and adult groups traveling to Haiti on mission trips. It has proved true that a picture speaks louder than words. The bold graphics make the vocabulary learning a wee bit more exciting than they would working only with text. Also, I appreciate the practical mix of verbs and adjectives, as well as nouns. I recommend it to everyone who is teaching or studying Kreyol, especially beginners.

This is an excellent resource for both English and Spanish speaking individuals. I use it in my classroom and it is invaluable. Volunteer tutors rely on this to find just the right word while trying to explain something to students. The center section about cultural items is interesting and can be used for classroom instruction.

Great dictionary, same as the Oxford Spanish Desk Dictionary.......2007-02-28

I did a lot of comparison shopping among Spanish-English dictionaries of similar size (or slightly smaller) and like this one best.

I wanted to mention an interesting detail: For some inexplicable reason, the Oxford Spanish Desk Dictionary and the Pocket Oxford Spanish Dictionary appear to be the same book, and are the same size. The only difference is that the "desk" dictionary is the hardcover version (the listed dimensions are very slightly larger because the hard cover extends beyond the page edges just a bit). The "pocket" dictionary is just the softcover version of same.

Now, why the "desk" version and the "pocket" version are the same size, I'll never know -- and, in fact, this "pocket" dictionary is much larger than a pocket-sized paperback -- not a big deal as long as you know what you are getting.

Nonetheless, a great dictionary, and I highly recommend it. I just thought this was an interesting bit of information.

Extremely practical and useful.......2007-01-16

This dictionary's best feature is its integration of idioms and phrases with regular entries. You can look up the first word of an idiom or phrase in either language (such has "home plate," "bittersweet," "take part in," etc.) and find the equivalent in the other language. It's a great conversational tool. It also notes which words and phrases are common in which countries. The only drawback is that if you want to read literature or other more complex works, you will probably need a more extensive dictionary.

not pocket-sized.......2006-11-25

This dictionary is not at all meant to be carried around in the streets. It is big even for me, a birder who routinely travels with heavy bird identification guides.

In the middle of the dictionary there is a section on hispanic culture and another on anglo culture, which remind me of "Lonely Planet" guidebooks. These take more away from the efficiency of the book. When I am in, say, Uruguay, I will refer to my guidebook for that information.

The words I did not find while reading a short article were: mesurado, sosiego, and cabal. Also, I only found about 50% of the Mexican slang words I could think of.

The things I always wished I had in my dictionary while learning English (from French), a bilingual conversion table for those maddening units of measurements and a bilingual map of the world, were as usual absent.

Among the better Spanish-English dictionaries.......2006-09-10

My Master's thesis was a review and rating of Spanish-English dictionaries. I find this dictionary, like all the other Oxford dictionaries, to be a good choice.

Here are a few of the factors which distinguish a good bilingual dictionary from a bad one.

To begin with, ignore certain publishers' marketing ploys such as entry and translation counts. They say nothing about the value of the words chosen.

The first valid factor to consider is lexicographic technique. A bad dictionary simply lists translations. Take, for example, the entry in the Cassell's Spanish Dictionary under the English headword loop: "lazo, gaza, nudo; ojal, presilla, alamar; anillo; recodo, comba, curva, vuelta," etc. For the English reader writing in Spanish, this is hopelessly inadequate, as the dictionary provides no clue as to which translation to use in which situation.

Compare the treatment of the same word in the far superior American Heritage Spanish Dictionary. "(length of line) lazo; (coil) vuelta; (bend) curva; (circular path) vuelta, circuito; (fastener) presilla" etc. Here, the user is given glosses in the native language to assist in identifying the right word for the context. Example sentences are also a tremendous help. Oxford is excellent in this respect, presenting good information to guide users through the semantic and syntactic complexities.

Second, a good dictionary should maintain an up-to-date lexicon, including such cultural and technological additions to the language as "baby sitter," "hostile takeover," "software," "flash drive." Oxford is a leader in this respect; its frequent revisions are more than mere window dressing and do a creditable job of covering the most recent additions to the language.

Third, idioms, slang, and cusswords can present real problems to the language learner, and a dictionary needs to handle them in a clear and frank fashion. This dictionary gets it right, giving stylistic equivalents for translations as well as clear advice to the user.

Be careful when you choose a bilingual dictionary, as some of the choices--Cassell's and Vox, for example--are downright terrible. The field of large dictionaries stays relatively static over time, and the best choices in it by far are Oxford, Collins, and Larousse. The field of small dictionaries, on the other hand, has many more players. While not the only good choice, Oxford is a dictionary you would certainly be pleased with.

I am a fanatic for visual dictionaries or pictorials. The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary is very good if you don't mind to spend 10-15 seconds in finding the meanings in the list related with the number. I rather have a line or arrow pointing the translation. Despite of that it is an excellent resource, and has tons of translation with different meanings.

Soy un fanático de los diccionarios visuales. Este diccionario es muy bueno si a alguien no le importa invertir 10-15 segundos buscando la relación del el numero con la palabra. Yo prefiero aquellos diccionarios visuales que tienen una línea señalando la palabra junto al gráfico. Aun así es un recurso excelente que tiene toneladas de traducciones en diferentes modismos y significados.

A great noun builder for intermediate to advanced students of Spanish (or Spanish-speaking students of English), this book will help you attain a degree of precision in your vocabulary that would be difficult to achieve any other way without a substantial investment of time. The dictionary is arranged by subject areas varying from the highly technical (e.g. precision instrument parts) to the everyday (e.g. tableware). About one-fourth of the volume is taken up by the index which is eminently helpful if you want to quickly find the translation of a particular word without having to wade through the many subject areas. The book identifies occasional word differences between Castillian Spanish and other idioms (e.g. Mexican Spanish) as well as between British and American English. Well-suited for browsing (a rare quality for a dictionary) and very different from most other language learning resources, consider this book a must-have for the serious language student or professional working abroad.
