I've had this book since my junior year of college and have found it to be an enormously helpful book. From its collection of quick and tasty recipes to when to splurge/save when building up a wardrobe to the rules of golf (which I needed to learn quickly for a tournament I recently attended), this book has it all. As I make the transition into the "working world", I have used this book to help me balance my checkbook, buy my first car and even decorate my apartment. This is a great book to skim through on a lazy Sunday afternoon as well as keep beside the bed for quick reference.
Jane Buckingham realizes that life, both hers and her readers, is never going to be perfect and does not try to instill a Martha Stewart like quest for domestic perfection into readers. Rather, she encourages us to blend splurging with thriftiness, authenticity with who-would-have-known-these-were-McDonald's-french-fries and optimism with a healthy dose of realism. Ultimately she shows that no matter what your budget or lifestyle is, you can live well and not break the bank doing it.
Some reviewers might deride her for offering what should be "common sense" but with some of the antics that go on in today's world, I think we could all benefit from a quick Common-Sense 101 review session. That said, the majority of her advice and tips go beyond mere common sense.
The most useful book I've ever read!.......2007-07-06
I absolutely love this book. I'm 21 and have been living on my own for a year and I wish I would've gotten the book a year ago. This has just about everything you'd ever like/need to know about anything from planning a party to changing a tire to getting in good with your boss. I've got stickys on a bunch of the pages for easy reference (even though I found an index in the back later on :) It's interesting and witty and sooo useful. This is going to be a lifetime investment for me :), which the book also covers, investments, that is.

A great book which you will keep referring to all your life!
I consider myself as one of those who sort of know almost everything. I know how to "cheat" my way through equipping the kitchen, entertaining/hosting parties, home decorating, managing finances, handling DIY projects, etc. In fact, I know enough to assume the coveted role of Have-It-All-Figured-Out goddess among most of my girlfriends and fellow wives that they could not help but wonder how I could ever do that.
Well, there is always room for improvement no matter how much you know. This book is like an extended version of how to "have it all", even after you think you already have it all. For example, I found that home-made steaks seasoned with salt and pepper is just as good as deli-bought or one cooked with a recipe that has all that fancy-schmancy marinates.
As for the book itself, don't expect to see pictures (I recall only one or two). It's words and words and more words. So if you are not a "word person", you'll probably loose interest fast and chuck this book aside. I love reading but even with this "wordy" book, I read selectively. I read from cover to cover on topics that interest me such as kitchen, entertaining, home decorating, etc. However, I just skim through uninteresting topics like finance, sports and cars...at least enough to know where I can find what so that I can refer to them easily when I need to.

I highly recommend this to anyone who is a member of a womens Bible Study group. The topics are relatable and I learned quite a few approaches to studying the Bible. I had fears of studying the Bible and this book helped me to overcome and actually look forward to studying the Word. Definately purchase this entire series and you will find that reading the Bible is a fun habit.

I loved it because it gave great tips and tools on how to study the Bible and how to go about gaining a deeper knowledge of what I read. Love it or Hate It - I loved it for humor and calming effect.......2007-10-08
This seems to be a "love it or hate it" based on the other reviews I've seen online, Personally, I loved this book, and her previous work: "Modern Girl's Guide to Life." It gives real-life advice for nervous moms-to-be (which I am) and the product advice seems to be bang-on. If you are more of a worrying expectant mom, I'd reccommend a book like the popular "What to Expect When you are Expecting." But I needed something with humor that was going to calm me, not make me more nervous, this was the exact book I needed, and I look forward to using it for a few more years.

I thought this was a good, fun book with a lot of good advise and tips. For those of you hating on the book, the book is one person's opinions and tips. you aren't supposed to agree with everything and it is not meant to be a "serious" book. I highly recommend this to all mothers to be and new moms.
Really Modern Girls Guide to Motherhood.......2007-07-03
This book was worth it to me just for the first hand experience and reviews of all the baby gadgets and toys and her simple easy advice on weeding through all the stuff that's available for baby.
She doesn't mention cloth diapering, which I plan on doing, and I would have liked a paragraph or two on this option but I get that realistically, does a modern girl have time?
I am personally aiming for a natural childbirth, Ms. Buckingham, obviously, is a fan of epidurals, she does however offer a list of exceptional references for those of us who want to make that choice, (such as Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin, I found this book to be invaluable on this subject).
Though I'm vegan and I wouldn't feed my kids most of the things she recommends, I love her suggestions on limiting sugar intake, not "bribing" or "bartering with kids to eat" and her suggestions for getting your child to eat. I've watched countless friends and relatives in this battle many times and I now feel more prepared to deal with it.
I enjoyed the reality check section on getting through the occasional doldrums of having to care for a new life and the little things you can do to take care of yourself.
This is a great book for a first time mum, who lives in a hectic city, and always has a million and one things to do, and is not able to dedicate time exclusively to raising a child. Having read, What to Expect When you're Expecting, and The Girlfriends Guide To Pregnancy, I wanted to know some of the SHORTCUTS and I got that from this book. If you already have children I can see how The Modern Girls Guide to Motherhood may not be for you, but for me it was a great overview.
Dangerous advice inside.......2007-06-23
This book has some of the most ridiculous and dangerous parenting "advice" I've ever seen. The author's take and "advice" on breastfeeding is nothing more than sad. Her language about breastfeeding is derogatory and her information about it is at best, misinformation. If you are self-absorbed and interested only in your own well-being and not that of your baby, then perhaps this books is for you. Being a parent isn't about doing the most convenient thing, it's about doing what's best for your baby - and apparently this author has missed out on that important life lesson. If you care about the health and well-being of your baby, you'll stay far, far away from this sad, sad book. Parents need support to do what's best for their children, not corroboration that it's ok to simply do what's easiest for the parent.
Terrible Advice.......2007-06-23
I really believe that this book gives AWFUL advice and can ruin an expecting mothers views on parenting. Let me just say, that to those who are thinking of reading this as another one of those "parenting advice books" to prepare you for parenthood-DONT DO IT!! It will ruin your experience and harm your child. By letting your child cry alone just because you think they are trying to "manipulate" you is really ludacris...come on?!? I am sorry but if you get preganat "just to buy stuff" you have some major issues...why would you consider bringing a child into this world just for your own material gain? How selfish. Just avoid this book if you want to have a happy, successful, and loving parenting experience.

Wonderful Compilation of D.I.Y. Creativity.......2004-06-08
I love D.I.Y. - the self-sufficiency of it, making your own rules, the freedom of expression, the "only limited by your own imagination" swing of it - and zines are a perfect example. Such a great outlet for sounding off, acting up, getting silly, making a point, and unrestrained creativity in general.
This is a wonderful compilation of what girls in the zine world have been up to and a great source of inspiration for those who are interested in starting their own or would just like to know there are others out there who feel the same way she does. Due to the lack of almighty higher ups to answer to, the idiosyncrasies, obsessions, and pure raw energy of the authors are not ironed out, watered down, or completely obliterated. Of course, this leads to a mixed bag in the quality department but you can't blame a girl for giving it her all. Editors, Karen Green and Tristan Taormino, have done a fine job of culling from some of the best.
The young women in this book tackle such topics as family, religion, sexism, racism, body image, sex, rape, feminism, guns, and celebrities. There is much insight and wisdom in these pages, as well as humor and a dose of absurdity.
For every female who has ever been told to behave, shut-up, be nice, lose weight, keep your legs crossed, sit up straight, be a good girl, smile, look pretty, blah blah blah...some kind of conduit is needed to release the repressed rage and humiliation. Making a zine is one solution and it's far more beneficial than cutting up your arms.
Zine Primer.......2001-06-19
If you know nothing about zines, then this is one of the best books to start with. If you want to know more about third wave feminism or girl culture (esp. riot grrrl culture), I'd again recommend this book. It's easy to read and articles range from the hysterical tongue-in-cheek "barbies we'd like to see" to the in-depth look at the idea and reality of sisterhood. The articles are as diverse in subject matter as the girls themselves. Queer, Asian-American, African-American, Moms, Jewess--whatever. Almost all shades of the spectrum are covered. But what is truly the essence of the book, and the point of zines, is that nothing is censored, drained of content and put in a pretty, grammatically correct package ready for consumption. It's totally DIY and all the editors did was put together the best so that all girls, even those NOT living in metro USA, could reach out and learn how to get into the loop and meet like-minded young women. Or become a zine-goddess themselves.

EXTREMELY disappointing. Admittedly, my expectations were high, but really now. Most pieces were either boring or a complete BACKLASH to the feminist movement. Specifically the piece "Baby don't do it" which is about how stupid you are to get pregnant and how you'll never have a good life and blah blah blah, the pieces written by BUST writers, because their whole magazine (even the pieces in this book) were all a bunch of garbage, including a piece where the writer whines about her dad being the best man in the whole world, so now she can't find a good man because none of them are like her father. BOO HOO. Then there is a piece titled "what does sassy mean to you" and this girl lists all of these horrible things sassy promotes, but then goes on to talk about how great it is. Oh yeah, and there's also an article on how terrible grrrl bands/musicians are today, which is complete trash, because we've never been stronger. I think I've ranted enough.
I bookmarked all of the good pieces that promote real issues and feminist-minded experience, etc. and i got six. six. that's sad, and i'm sorry for those wonderful, amazing women who are being paired with such ....
I probably shouldn't have gone off, but i this book is definitly eye-catching and any grrrl of my generation would drool at the site of it, and that scares me. i don't like knowing that grrrls might feed from such ignorance.
A good read.......2000-06-13
I thought this book was good, I recommend it to most other girls I know, and I really enjoyed reading it. However, I thought it got a little too "literary" towards the end. I wrote a zine as a teenager, and I can garauntee there were no fine-tuned feminist theories or big University words in our zines. Most of what we said, as did the other girls we knew, was stream-of-consciousness, and "untutored" feelings and thoughts. I say leave the studied learning for scholarly publications.

Frederick Douglass's Narrative, first published in 1845, is an enlightening and incendiary text. Born into slavery, Douglass became the preeminent spokesman for his people during his life; his narrative is an unparalleled account of the dehumanizing effects of slavery and Douglass's own triumph over it. Like Douglass, Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery, and in 1861 she published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, now recognized as the most comprehensive antebellum slave narrative written by a woman. Jacobs's account broke the silence on the exploitation of African American female slaves, and it remains crucial reading. These narratives illuminate and inform each other. This edition includes an incisive Introduction by Kwame Anthony Appiah and extensive annotations.

simply astounding! totally shatters those awful and ever-infectious civil war era romantic notions. be gone, "gone with the wind!" many thanks be to the spirits of mr. douglass and ms. jacobs for surviving their tremendous struggles to give us truth! recommend these books to others (especially the crowd that chooses to separate the "human stock" question from intellectual discussions of the civil war era).
A potent pairing of two essential autobiographies.......2001-10-24
"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" (first published in 1845) and Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" (1861) are probably the two most powerful examples of the slave narrative. This literary form represents the first-person accounts of individuals who have lived as slaves. The Modern Library has paired these two essential American texts in a single edition, with an introduction by Kwame Anthony Appiah and commentaries by Jean Fagan Yellin and Margaret Fuller.
Together, "Narrative" and "Incidents" offer a male and female perspective on the institution that has left lasting scars on America. These texts are well written, and rich in social and political insights. Both authors graphically illustrate, for example, how the Judeo-Christan Bible and the Christian church were used as tools to support the racist system of slavery. Douglass provides a powerful window into the importance of literacy as a tool by which he escaped a slave mentality. And Jacobs incisively deconstructs the twisted strands of race, gender, power, and sexuality that tied together slaveowning culture.
"Narrative" and "Incidents" are compelling pieces of literature. Confusing and disjointed.......2007-08-17
First, the title is misleading. It's more about hunting and fishing for husbands as opposed to the more literal meaning. The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fish, said to be the first "chick lit" novel, is really a series of essays focusing on a character named Jane Rosenal as she navigates her way through childhood, adolescence, and later adulthood.
There are great lapses in time between the stories, and they're not all put in chronological order, which makes me think that the stories are ordered according to some common theme--though I never really figured out what that theme was. I mean, I get that the book is about dating, but it was really confusing to be in a lot of ways. In addition, Jane's relationship with the much older editor was a little bit disconcerting to me. Also, there was one story that seemed really out of place: I got the impression that it was told from Jane's point of view after she'd had children and they'd grown up. But I couldn't figure out how that story fit into the general course of the book.
The title of the book comes from a story placed at the end of the book, where Jane begins to date a guy she meets at a wedding. Se's so caught up in playing the dating "game by "The Rules," that she doesn't allow the guy to see who she really is. The book is well written, but there's a lot which didn't make sense to me and there didn't seem to be a "plot," so to speak, which is why I only gave this book three stars.
What I love about this guide.......2007-08-16
It's not about hunting or fishing LOL.
It's a humorous, yet poignant collection of short stories, all based upon the same likeable character - Jane Rosenal -who searches for love, self-understanding, and her place in this world.
It paved the way for smart "chick lit".
It's a great book for women to reflect on their own personal experiences with family, friends, and lovers.
Everytime I read it, I discover something deeper within each story.
I highly recommend this book for all young women out there. Melissa Bank hits it spot on!

I was anxious to read this because I read one of her stories in Redbook magazine. They advertised it as an exceprt from the book, however, that particular story appeared nowhere in the book. This was the first problem. The second problem was the book itself, which was not a novel, but a bunch of short stories. I was completely unaware of this until I got all the way to the ANNOYING MIDDLE CHAPTER, featuring a completely different protagonist. Finally, it dawns on me. So THAT"S the reason she keeps switching tenses! So THAT's the reason she keeps jumping around! So THAT"S the reason I hate this book so much I'm throwing it across the room! I think it was a lame effort to publish an unfinished novel in a hurry. She probably sent the first chap out and got a nibble, then ran out of time and since she couldn't get the chaps to gel, she called them short stories instead. Glad I didn't buy it at Borders.
A Book You Could Keep or Throw Back.......2007-07-27
(I'd give it 2 and 1/2 stars to be exact) The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing consists of 7 chapters- each that reads like its own short story- that follows one woman's relationships throughout her life. However, given that as the link, two of the stories don't really fit with the others. It's a very quick and easy book to read. It is also one of those oddities that entertain you okay while you are reading it, but once you put it down (and there are lots of good stopping points) you do not have an overwhelming desire to pick it up again.
Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-07-26
A good friend of mine recently recommended this book to me. At first I just sort of forgot about it but when summer rolled around and I was out of books to read, I sought it out. I am not a big reader and I have never been the type to sit down and read an entire book in a day. I read this book in 4 days. I could hardly wait to finish it. The story sucks you in with vivid depiction of life. It was an absolute joy to read. The stories were all different with mini-morals and yet they also wove into a much bigger message. There are so many characters and events in this novel that are so true and life like that it's easy to laugh out loud with them as well as feel their pain. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a thought provoking book with a few laughs along the way.
