Book Description

THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING is a classic in the field. Written by true teachers of public speaking who have been in the classroom for many years and who have adapted their methods to best meet the needs of their changing student body, this Thirteenth Edition stays true to what has made it a market-leading text for hundreds of thousands of students. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING presents the speechmaking process in a six-step framework based on classical and contemporary theory. The straightforward writing style and effective use of examples enables students to understand and effectively perform key speechmaking activities. The six-step framework emphasizes topic selection, audience analysis and adaptation, effective research (including appropriate use of Internet resources), organization (with emphasis on outlining), language and delivery. The six action steps are introduced in generic form and then later adapted to follow principles of informative and persuasive speaking. THE CHALLENGE OF EFFECTIVE SPEAKING prepares students to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to their everyday lives.

5 out of 5 stars Multi Media Public Speaking Training.......2006-07-19

'Audience Centered' seems to be an obvious off-shoot of the teaching styles, that have become hyper-popular over the last decade or two, that claim to be 'Student Centered'. Is it just a buzz word, or is there something in it? As another reviewer points out, Audience Centered public speaking dates back at least as far back as Aristotle.

In keeping with the new-fangled approaches towards learning, 'Pubic Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' offers the student a full multi-media experience, that is reflected in the price. However I love such an approoach as it allows the student to learn in his or her preferred learning style.

While I don't need to go into the contents of the course because the product description by the publisher is more than adequate. This renewed package though, is a veritable collection of expert advice on all aspects of public speaking, from preparing to completion. What is more, you can actually see the speeches being delivered through examples provided by online video clips.

Without a doubt the price for this package is a little steep. You might fid it worth it, or you might not. Value is so subjective after all, but 'Public Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' certainly takes advantage of the many more learning channels available today, than a book alone can, or even an audio/book course.

5 out of 5 stars The Sixth and Ever Better Edition.......2006-07-11

You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.'

The first edition of this book, about 15 years ago, set the tone for what has now become the sisth edition, with each edition improved by audience feedback and new educational concepts. The general concept of keeping the audience at the center of of the speakers mind through all of the steps in the process.

Of course, this does not mean that the speaker tells the audience only what they want to hear; to do that would not convey anything to the audience but a good feeling. Some of the example speeches, 'I Have a Dream,' Martin Luther King, Jr., speak to people holding views very opposed to his.

The highly illustrated book is carefully organized with a mixture of text, tables, drawings, comments and questions to maintain the students interest while educating him. Indeed these techniques are some that can be used by the student in his speeches.

4 out of 5 stars Good copy.......2005-09-17

I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read- great to use.......2000-04-25

This is a really good book. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. For someone like me who was terrified, but no longer is of public speaking, and for those who just need a refrsher course, this book is brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Good for class..........2007-09-30

I would have never looked at this book before i needed it for class, but it is a good source for preparing for any type of public speaking occasion. It is truly helpful. The text has examples and the examples of speeches are usually also in video form on the CD's that come with the text. Also, there are CD's so that you can listen to the chapter (in your car) for example. I personally read each chapter and used the CD's for extra review... Good source for Public Speaking classes, or preparing for any type of presentation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Uplifting.......2007-10-12

Very relevant to my real estate practice. Listening to this CD is a great way to start the day.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-13

Read about this recording in other motivational material and finally bought it. Single CD and not to long to listen to on short commutes. Can listen to it over and over and pick up something new each time. Really worth owning and sharing with others.

4 out of 5 stars CD Review.......2007-03-08

Easy to listen to CD. I've listened to this about 3-4 times in my car on the way to work and on the way home. An easy idea to grasp which can be applied to any area of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a kick in the pants, this is it!.......2007-02-22

It takes a lot to get me motivated, but this did it. It's amazing how something recorded in 1959 (I think) is so relevant now.

I'm currently participating in his 30 day challenge. I'm on day 13 and it's working as it should, completely on track.

I've sent a copy of this CD to a business contact that is also fired up. Since this purchase, I've also purchased, Lead the Field, by Earl Nightingale, but this one is better. Shorter, and better.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Change your life forever in 30 minutes!.......2007-02-18

There is no place to spend 30 minutes, and experience as much insight into your own personal life than right here! Common sense will always rule as it did over 50 years ago, and Earl will touch on every corner of this for you, from material gain to coexisting with everyone around you. The funny thing is that my father played this for me when I was probably 10 years old, and while my best friend and I used to make fun of it, I can still remember many of the lines and points now over 40 years later, especially the "now suppose a farmer has some land" one. I was reintroduced this past summer to the recording at age 51 of course now on CD, and have probably listended to it over 100 times since (no kidding). I have listened to it so many times I wake up with it playing in my head, and especially love sharing it with my family! Do yourself a favor no matter what age you are, and get with this now! I cannot imagine what the world could be like if everyone had a chance to hear, and live this philosophy!

Inside, you'll discover how Napoleon Bonaparte mastered the use of the pregnant pause to grab attention, how Lady Margaret Thatcher punctuated her most serious speeches with the use of subtle props, how Ronald Reagan could win even the most hostile crowd with carefully timed wit, and much, much more.

Whether you're addressing a small nation or a large staff meeting, you'll want to master the tips and tricks in Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln.
"As a student of speech, I very much enjoyed this intriguing historic approach to public speaking. Humes creates a valuable and practical guide."

Chris Matthews, Hardball

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quick read, excellent content.......2007-08-23

I would title this book, "The language of leadership". It's content is excellent and well organized. It teaches ways to speak and act like a leader and therefore command such authority through the power of the spoken word.

The chapter titles all begin with "Power", but the author practices what he preaches by getting across the information in a well organized and easy to get through manner. If you look at the highlights in each chapter and skim through, you get the jist of information, hence making it easy to comprehend in a day.

Every chapter has its content and then real life examples from the author's experience. The examples are both historic and contemporary, very useful, convincing & often interesting, although ocassionally unecessary to get the message accross.

The criticisms I've seen of this book are that it is patronizing or too long winded or redundant. I don't find any of these things to be true. I however admit, that instead of reading the book cover to cover and sentence by sentence, I read it as any executive would read a proposal or document - skim to get the highlights and then go back in for more detailed reference when needed. I got a great deal out of the book this way.

I purchased the book for a Dean of a Business school and a high power executive. While skimming through it, I found myself quite absorbed. Since then, I've found myself continually thinking back to what I read there and I ended up buying myself a copy for reference and one as a gift for the CEO of my company as well.

Makes a great gift for a Type A executive or anyone in a position of leadership of any kind. This isn't just a public speaking book, and it's not about overcoming shyness or a "Toastmasters" type thing. It's about how to make what you say be powerful and effective.

4 out of 5 stars You should own it if you plan giving speeches.......2007-02-14

Well written with great examples. Not your typical textbook, which makes for a refreshing approach to leadership classes.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers.......2006-07-13

Unbelievable that no one taught me these principles years ago. This guy has been around a long time! Excellent, easy to read and incorporate.

3 out of 5 stars speaking like churchill.......2006-07-03

This is an excellent book for speakers os any level who wish to make small yet noticeable improvements to their speaking performance. Churchill and Lincoln both mastered the skills necessary to be great speakers. The greatest secret that I took from this book is the power of the ..... PAUSE. To stand in front of a group of people saying nothing , with poise and confidence , is a skill the truly seperates great speakers from the rest.
I would recommend this book without hesitation.

4 out of 5 stars worthwhile reading.......2006-04-02

Good book. Nevertheless the author could make it better by cutting off some of the quotes that here and there become excessive in number and extension. This is particularly true for the chapters "power wit", "power poetry" and "power line". They are tiresome -- even boring -- when prolonged beyond the necessary. This only proves that you can have too much a good thing. When it happens good becomes less good and enticing becomes exhausting.
If you think your readers - and especially your audience - should be protected against fatuous speeches, empty words and their monotonous delivery, read this book and keep a copy at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Speech .......2006-02-28

I trully enjoyed this book, even though I am not a fan of text books. It has helped me develop stronger speaking skills, and I am not very good at public speaking. It's not a how to book, its simply a guide which offers tips and ideas on how you should present various topics.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!.......2002-02-02

As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way. BRAVO! I'll recommend this to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2001-02-04

I'm a student at a local college here in Jersey City. I found this book very easy to read but doesn't defeat the purpose to inform. I really wish I can have him as my teacher.

This is a letter I wrote to the authors (to which they responded but I won't post it there b/c of copyright):

--------------------------------------
Dear Drs. Michael and Suzanne Osborn:

As a student in my first public speaking class, I felt I was benefiting from this textbook and classroom activities. I read about ways to maintain one's credibility through thorough research and avoiding using stereotypes, which impedes the audience's ability to listen critically. Imagine my surprise then, when I came across pages 135-137, where some web sites are listed as resources to understand ethnic/racial/cultural diversity. Under the heading for "Asian American," I couldn't help but notice that the sites are Asian but seem to have little to do with the Asian American experience. I checked out these websites to be sure not to judge prematurely, but sure enough, these sites are all based in Asia! Surely there are plenty of resources for those who truly identify themselves as Asian Americans? It is insulting to me that one would equate the Asian experience with that of the Asian American one. Similarly misguided sites are listed under "European American." Again, those sites seem more to have to do with Europeans than actual European Americans. Perhaps you should have advised those working on this text to check their own stereotypes at the door. I was disappointed yet again when I read page 157, where you raised as an example of questions students might ask during topic briefings, "Why do Asian students often excel in mathematics?" Though I understand people often raise questions like these, it wouldn't hurt to have addressed the racist nature of this sample question. I find any comment based on racial stereotyping racist, be the comment intended to be positive or not.

The above reminded me of yet an earlier example based on stereotypes. Where you discuss emotional reactions to words on page 87, you introduced a hypothetical case of one listener incensed over the speaker's use of the word "girls" to refer to women. In this case, it turns out the speaker goes on to say that "a program aimed at promoting more females is in effect," which seems to somehow suggest that it makes it all better. Though you probably did not intend for the women in the hypothetical case to be promoted without their own merit, it still sounds rather like the program in question encourages the promotion of someone based more on their sex to fill a quota than on merit, which I find intrinsically sexist.

These awkward examples in the book only worked to distract me from critically reading the text, not to mention making me seriously question this book as a credible resource. I highly suggest you rethink these examples for your next edition of what could otherwise be a useful tool for those embarking on their first public speaking courses.

4 out of 5 stars Very colorful and contains many helpful sidebars.......2005-04-04

Finally, a text that deals with the fear of public speaking by dedicating a whole chapter to it. It doesn't come naturally, or at least easily for most people, unless of course, you're in the business. The Osborns give a whole chapter to the "First Speech." Although I feel this team was a little short on speech preparation techiniques as far as conducting interviews, what was offered was good enough to set up a solid base of testimonies for informative speeches. And although they did well in the in in-depth lesson outlining, the Osborns could've devoted more space to the Power Point presentation. This is increasingly necessary to win over audiences. A good Power Point presentation is the epitome of competent public speaking.
I feel there could have been more detail on the delineation of small groups and subgroups. However, this team had good anecdotes and very colorful interpretation of language usage.
I look forward to the 8th edition.

4 out of 5 stars Public Speaking.......2000-01-17

I used the text book for a "public speaking" course at California State University Hayward campus.

The book does an excellent job of taking the reader through the steps in preparing public speeches. It contains numerous examples of speeches.

The main thing I felt that the author did was to teach the reader a the step by step process of picking a topic, preparing an outline and delivering the speech it self.

good luck to all potential public speakers!

4 out of 5 stars A Speaker's Guidebook.......2001-08-21

An excellent text for novice public speakers. I've found it particularly helpful for students who are unfamiliar with public speaking. The tabs make it an easy reference guide to tailor a speech to your personal topic. For people who are experienced, or who have never given a public speech, there is invaulable information about audience analysis, presentation, and the basic construction of a good speech. This is the kind of text that public speakers will keep in their library as a personal reference guide to aid them in the construction of any speech.

Book Description

Phyllis Mindell, an acclaimed expert on professional communications, shows women how to transform themselves by transforming their language; shed weak words, phrases, and gestures; empower themselves to win attention and respect; and get their ideas across with confidence and power.

Perhaps the best teacher of how the power of language can transform is an unexpected one: Charlotte the spider of E.B. White's, Charlotte's Web. Mindell demonstrates how Charlotte communicated messages that gained national attention and saved a friend's life. As a model, she combines female strengths of wisdom and compassion with the determination and power to make a difference.

As part of Prentice Hall Press's highly successful How to Say It tm series, How to Say It tm for Women is packed with practical tips, techniques, and examples that arm women to grapple with every communication issue, from choosing the right word or sentence to speaking, reading, writing, leading, dressing, and interviewing effectively. Readers will learn how to: shun words that weaken messages and make women invisible; sail through interviews; assess and develop leadership skills; say NO, kindly but firmly; respond appropriately to slurs, insults, and harassment; say the one winning word that gets people to follow directions.

True stories about women in every field, along with quotes from Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Carla Hills, Amelia Earhart, Elizabeth Dole and others, enable women to tap the power of words to persuade, motivate, establish authority, and make a difference-- without sacrificing their integrity, their compassion, or their femininity.

5 out of 5 stars What every woman should know!.......2006-03-09

I read about this book - actually, I consider it a textbook - when searching for tools on expanding my career. I usually wouldn't buy something like this, and instead look for similar information from free 'Net sources. But on a whim, I bought it, and am so glad I did. I'm not even halfway through and what I've learned already has helped me to speak and express myself in a way that gets people's attention, and has improved my professional image. One of the best tips, which comes early in the book, is catching myself using the "I think/like/don't like" phrase when I want to discuss facts. I do it, so I don't look like a know-it-all. Dr. Mindell, however, shows several ways to express facts without appearing as though I have all the answers.

The author also cites common grammar and language mistakes that keep women in the background, and prevent us from asserting our strengths and skills. The concept of Weak Language is especially intriguing; in reviewing the examples, I saw myself in almost every one. Her solutions are very attainable, but she strongly recommends practicing this new language with another woman. I have, and my women friends were amazed at how powerful this "new" language sounds.

These are hard habits to break, but with the tips and examples in this book, I'm getting better at it. And I can see the difference in how others treat me; more importantly, I feel different about myself. The book is really a life-changing experience, for someone who has never really put much thought into my "image" but is continually frustrated at not getting the positive attention for my work success as I believe I deserve. Thank you Dr. Mindell!

5 out of 5 stars Review by the Business Librarians of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh.......2005-07-17

The lights go down. The speaker strides confidently towards the podium, pauses and makes eye contact with the audience. And from the very first moment you know, instinctively, that it's going to be an excellent presentation. An experience like this reinforces your desire to create your own unique aura of self-confidence. What can you do to make this happen?

One thing you can do, right away, is to get a copy of Dr. Phyllis Mindell's book, How to Say It for Executives: The Complete Guide to Communication for Leaders. It's an excellent guide for acquiring and practicing the communication skills you'll need to get ahead and stay there, complete with exercises, charts, lists, examples, and a simple format that makes it all easy to digest.

Primary among those skills is something obvious but often overlooked: listening. When you pay close attention when others are talking, instead of interrupting or jumping to conclusions without hearing the entire story, it will be noticed and appreciated. Of course, a favorite chapter for us here at the library is "Reading Like a Leader," in which the author doesn't tell what to read, but rather how to read - both speedily and deeply - in ways that will build skills in analysis, synthesis, and argument. A chapter on nonverbal leadership breaks down the powerful code spoken by gesture, dress, and body placement.

Preparing a presentation is the centerpiece of How To Say It For Executives, and Dr. Mindell meticulously lays out each step of the process. Before you begin, gather some information about the audience. The speech should be written out, using an absolute minimum of sentences that begin with "I", and rehearsed. The most objective way to find out how you really look and sound in front of an audience is to videotape the speech. After viewing it, turn off the sound and watch it again. Now that you know where improvement is needed, complete the assignments in each chapter that target problems commonly faced by public speakers.

You never know when hostile or difficult people will be in the audience. One individual can spoil an entire presentation by monopolizing the floor or asking inappropriate questions. The author offers several techniques for tactfully handling a variety of problems and disruptions that can occur in an open forum.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson in How to Say It for Executives is this: Make a concerted effort to stop using weak words like "I feel", "sort of", "I guess" and "I think" in everyday conversations as well as presentations. Instead of coming across as tentative and unsure, practice substituting phrases that will make your sentences strong and persuasive. Although the advice in this book is directed primarily to those in leadership positions, anyone but a hermit will find life is made much easier by becoming a better communicator

3 out of 5 stars Not Helpful.......2005-04-25

I bought this book at a womens' leadership conference a couple of years ago. I read it cover-to-cover and decided to try the skills covered when communicating in my office. My supervisors' opinions of me changed drastically - they began to view me as surly and defiant. I didn't think any of the verbage alternatives were rude, but in the organization where I was working, the higher-ups expected you to consider them omnipotent and not have an opinion of your own. Ultimately one should consider their audience and adjust their language accordingly.

5 out of 5 stars Great basis for coursework.......2005-04-05

I am using this book as a reference for my students in a business english course in Japan. Although the students find reading it cover to cover a bit too much (lower intermediate English level) when I point out specific points and pages I want them to read and understand, they really get a lot out of it. The book is written well and ideas are developed and backed up clearly. I would recommend this to any teachers of women students.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for aspiring women leaders.......2004-07-30

I can't recommend this book highly enough. As a leadership coach in Silicon valley I often help women managers and executives to become better leaders, and this book speaks directly to two of the biggest roadblocks to women's advancement: communication and confidence. These women are shocked at how closely Mindell understands their work challenges. The book takes highly volatile, challenging workplace situations and offers suggestions that immediately actionable.
