I always looked to consumer reports when I needed to buy a car. I find the information reliable and a good source to look to when making a decision on what to buy.

Great Idea; Disappointing Reality.......2007-08-26
I really liked the idea of this book and quickly purchased a copy. However, after reading it and working with it, I have become frustrated with the content of the book. I have had a difficult time finding many of the recommended toys. Some of them are no longer being produced by their manufacturers, others are primarily produced and retailed overseas, and therefore these items can be difficult to purchase. You can find some sold used through sources like eBay or possibly have them shipped from overseas. Neither is my perferred option.
I also would like to comment on the online website the Oppenheim's offer to compliment their books. I really find pictures of the recommend toys very valuable for helping to identify them online or in stores. I wish the online site and the book would provide many more pictures of the most recommended toys. Also, I found some of the editing of the paragraphs regarding certain toys confusing. Other toys are mentioned embedded in the text of the paragraph either as picks or pans. Some of the editing of the paragraphs is rough and doesn't make sense to me. On the web site some of the paragraphs read like poor cut and paste jobs. I am very appreciative that the site and the information on it is free without registration, but it seems like the authors would not want the site so sloppily edited. Some of the headers and links in the Toddler section, for example, relate to products in the Preschool group, which I found confusing. I could not tell if the hyperlinks were incorrect. I also had some difficulties in the Toddler section differentiating between toys which were more appropriate for my 14-month old daughter and those that are more appropriate for a 2-year old. I wish there were more differentiation and clarity in the recommendations. That said, many of the toys I've purchased based on recommendations (either the recommended toys themselves or toys that seem somewhat similar in properties) have generally been enjoyed by her.
Great guide for new parents.......2007-01-04
I have purchased several issues of this book. Everyone is very pleased with the contents. A very valued source of reference for all new parents.
Two books were for my grandchildren and I wanted them to have the best in educational toys at the appropriate ages.
Wonderful resource for parents!.......2006-11-03
While their website does provide a good amount of information, the book is much more in depth and detailed. Our son, 6 months old, loves all the toys we have gotten him that were listed as winners by the book. We make our christmas shopping lists based upon the recommendations from this book. I would highly recommend this to any new parent.
always right on.......2006-02-19
The oppenheims never fail to recommend kid tested toys, books and videos that have been perfect gifts for my friends' kids. I read a bad review from a grouch who thought name calling was helpful. It was probably written by a toy person who did not get a good review.
I think the Oppenheims use excellent toy testers and I truly respect the assessments done by children. They are always right on!!
Myra Klahr
An excellent resource.......2006-02-14
The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio continues to be the standard against which other toy reviewers are judged: Every product is kid & parent tested and reviewed by the Oppenheims for value, safety, and age appropriateness, and I've found that the products that they recommend are excellent. Unlike magazines and other reviewing sites that take advertisements or fees, the Oppenheims do not. They call it like they see it and are independent.
I've relied on their annual guide for years. I also like the fact that you can get a "feel" for their reviews for free just by going their website (www.toyportfolio.com) to see if their views coincide with your own (and to find reviews of things that might not yet have been covered in the book). Nevertheless, the book is so fully packed with useful information (not just what to buy, but what to avoid) that it ranks as an excellent value
I've found their recommendations to be right on. I love the way the book is organized (by age and sub-topic) so I can zero in on just the right product for my kids. For instance, where else will you find comparison reviews of the best musical instruments for five year olds, or the best active toys, or craft project or science books, for that matter? Some of the products are available at chains, other's can be bought on-line; I like the balance.
Like any good critic, the Oppenheims have a point of view: Emphasizing quality over "hype" - they take the products out of the package and really see if they deliver lasting play value. The Oppenheims are parents, authors, and child development experts and this multi-faceted background shines through in their informative (and blessedly short) reviews.
I really respect that they look at mass-market toys as well as less well promoted products, because I like to mix and match the kinds of things I give. Whether I'm looking for a big ticket toy or a product for under $10, a game to share with my child or a toy to develop independence, the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio is always where I turn to first.

A fun way to shop online..........2007-02-10
What new mom or mom-to-be doesn't need a little assistance when it comes to getting everything they need for their baby or finding that special celebratory gift for themselves? Hillary Mendelsohn has made a name for herself as a person who knows online shopping and in THEPURPLEBOOKBABY: The Definitive Guide to Exceptional Online Baby and Maternity Shopping, a special edition of thepurplebook, she goes a step further by focusing solely on this demographic of women.
With a guide as focused as this book, the consumer is able to cut out a lot of the legwork and time running from store to store looking for a particular item. THEPURPLEBOOKBABY is a wonderful resource for mothers, friends, grandparents, or basically anyone interested in shopping for baby items.
Broken down into various catagories, the guide is structured into an easy what-to-look-for format, in which Mendelsohn has hand-selected only the best online resources, running the gamut in price, style, and even popularity. What I especially liked was she also included items just for mom, in which a woman could fully enjoy the benefits (pampering, special attention, and love) of pregnancy and/or motherhood.

Book Description
These days, there are many advantages to buying a used car over a new car. Unfortunately, purchasing a used car may pose a greater risk to the consumer. A used car by nature will most likely need more repairs, lack newer safety measures, and may come with a short warranty or none at all. That is why it is so important for consumers to do extensive research so they can avoid all of the pitfalls of the used car market category. The auto experts at Consumer Reports have done that research, compiled the information, and now report their findings into the 2006 edition of Used Car Buying Guide. This fabulous tool will help steer any consumer who is in the market for a used car towards the better-performing and more reliable used car models and away from those models with a troubled past or substandard performance. Before consumers set foot on a used car lot, they should read all the valuable information provided in this book so they can be armed with the information and the knowledge to make an educated choice. The majority of this book is devoted to the profiles of 256 cars and trucks, presenting all major 1998-2005 models. Each profile contains a photo from the representative year, a write-up of the vehicle, reliability history, crash-test data, and the model years when key safety gear was added and when a major redesign was made.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, very helpful.......2007-01-25
The only thing this book doesn't have that we wished it did was an estimate of miles-per-gallon for each vehicle model.
Other than that, it's a great investment. Really helped us narrow down our search, and by using all the website resources it lists to the fullest, we paid less than we anticipated for our new-to-us car. Gave us great bargaining power and resources to find the car we wanted.
if you are thinking of buying a car look into getting this book.......2006-11-03
This is an excellent resorce! I was buying a car for the first time and this helped me get alot of the knowledge needed and build the confidence to go out and buy.
Need to know basics.......2006-06-04
My quest for a recent Mercedes SL 350 shifted into an higher gear when I came upon this link and decided to buy this book. It's brimful of tips 'n tricks on buying strategies. When visiting several candidates I was able to identify 1. a (possible) leak in the rubber ring of the cilinderhead 2. a simple slipping clutch on the first two candidates (it was a tiptronic)
Anyway, this book will lighten up your step in the dark when buying 2nd hand cars.
Clearly Communicates Used Car Information.......2006-01-26
Buying a used car? I just did. Buy the "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide" first.
Rather than depend on the advice of semi-knowledgeable friends, a mechanic biased toward a car maker and not a specific vehicle, or by looking to see what your neighbor drives, you can depend on this.
I bought my last car using an earlier guide and bought my 'new' 2003 Corolla LE using this current edition.
In it, I found lists of "Good Bets," which are cars the authors consider to perform well over the years. That is guiding my purchase. I won't buy a car not listed there. I also found lists dividing reliable cars by price range, which cars have had recalls, unreliable models (by year), and detailed descriptions of the pros and cons of each vehicle.
That's not all. There are also articles on safety, buying strategies, batteries, insurance, towing, depreciation, tires and child car seats.
It is not a complicated book. It is straight to the point, with minimal car jargon. Novices like myself are not overwhelmed by information I am not concerned with.
I am interested in safety, performance, cost of repair and related information. I found all of this here.
I fully recommend "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide." I am confident that because I have read it and will refer to it while I shop for an auto online, I am prepared to save money and to buy a better vehicle.

For everything there is a season, and in the world of wine the calendar is defined by bud break, fruit set, harvest, and the arrival of the latest edition of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book. Celebrating the sale of more than 7 million copies of editions spanning a quarter century, the 2002 publication provides an updated addition to the prestigious and prolific wine writer's popular series of pocket-sized reference books. With delineated chapters--some merely a page long--Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book: 2002 follows a standard format: wine trend prognostication, a brief description of the current vintage (here the 2000 harvest), a reexamination of 1999, glossary of grape types, and food and wine matches. The book's bulk is composed of an alphabetical listing of short entries--mostly wineries--subdivided within geographical chapters. Johnson can be stylish, even witty (a lively Vernaccia pairs well with a dish of grey mullet: not the one "on the heads of aging rock stars"), but aside from the opening few pages, there's a decidedly ghostwritten feel to the proceedings. Indeed, the acknowledgments list over 40 "kind friends," including several regionally based wine writers, for their "special knowledge," most notably of some smaller producers. But for someone of Hugh Johnson's stature, to allow, once again, in the 2002 edition the Syrah grape to be identified as identical to Petite Sirah--friends, kind or not, shouldn't let friends get away with that sort of thing. --Tony Mason

Lees is more?.......2006-05-24
Last weekend my wife asked that I clear some of the debris out of the bookshelves in the library, and as I made my way through my wine books I found an edition of Hugh Johnson's 1990 Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine. Now this isn't exactly equivalent to stumbling on a first edition of Paradise Lost, but it's what passes for palpable excitement in my house. Just as I was sitting down to write a review of the 2006 Pocket Wine Book, this veritable antique magically appeared.
So I naturally set out to see what had changed in the past 16 years. The book is almost exactly the same dimensions-I guess pockets haven't changed much. It will still slip into an interior coat pocket, though it would probably feel somewhat unwieldy there given its 8" length.
How to contrast the two editions? I thought it might be fun to pick a Bordeaux chateau and see what HJ has to say 16 years apart. Let's do one that has no small amount of controversy around it these days, say Chateau Pavie.
1990. Splendidly sited first-growth of 100 acres on the slope of the Cotes. Typically rich and tasty St. E, particularly since 1982.
2006. Splendidly sited first-growth; 37 hectares of mid-slope on the Cotes. Great track record...this is new wave St. Emilion: thick, intense, sweet, mid-Atlantic and the subject of heated debate.
Plus ca change? Hardly. Other than the fact I have no idea what he means by mid-Atlantic (good with crab cakes?), this is what you can expect from the 2006 Pocket Book of Wine. It reminds me of the genie's description of his state in Disney's Alladin-"incredible cosmic power, itty-bitty living space." Translation for this guide: incredible density of information in a tiny package. Also not so sure about the conversion to the metric system, but maybe I wasn't paying attention when the Brits switched over to the dark side.
Let's just pick one more comparison of '90 and '06 at random before we move on. I opened the '06 Guide about 2/3 of the way through and landed on Croatia. There I found a page-and-a-half of definitions and producer descriptions for a region from which it may well be another 16 years before I actually get to try a wine-or want to. HJ has been there and done that. By way of contrast, the 1990 Guide has but two pages dedicated to all of Yugoslavia, including Croatia. There's no separate heading for Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro or Macedonia like you'll find in `06. Now that's progress.
1990. Dingac. Heavy sweetish red from local Plavic (grape), specialty of the mid-Dalmatian coast.
2006. Dingac. Vineyard designation on Peljesac's steep southern slope. Made from partially dried Plavic Mali, producing a full-bodied jammy red but emerging as a robust and dry red that supports oak and bottle aging. Highly esteemed and expensive. Look for Bura, Kiridzija, Matusko, Milicic, Skaramuca..
So what have we learned? A bunch. Much has changed (understatement of the year) in Croatia, and HJ has chronicled it with both great precision and concision. You get the geography, the grape variety, the nature of the wine and notable producers in a couple of terse phrases. That's hard to do.
What's the secret to this book? It's just crammed with facts, like force-feeding a goose to get foie gras. Here's a partial inventory of what's contained in this diminutive Dionysian dynamo (I must be getting tired):
Vintage reports on 2004 and 2003. Summaries of grape varieties both great and obscure. Wine and food suggestions including a section on cheeses. Suggested wines to drink in 2006. Sections on what must be every wine-growing region in the world, including high-level maps, regional designations, vintage charts, producer profiles, appellation and vineyard descriptions, and terminology definitions. For every standalone producer (eg Antinori): star rating from 1-4; concise color commentary calling out any particularly fine/consistent wines. For a single site, eg Bordeaux chateau: commune, star rating, recent good vintages, vintages for current drinking, brief comments, second wines. A quick reference vintage chart across regions; a small glossary of technical terms; serving temperature recommendations; and an explanation of Hugh Johnson's idiosyncratic scoring system (best score=the whole vineyard, i.e. it's so good I'd just buy the whole damn thing) and more.
If I continue with this review it will soon be longer than the book itself. No doubt: it delivers on what it advertises. Sure it misses some ultra-fine details, but it would be a fantastic reference for someone who doesn't mind carrying it around, an ideal use case, for example, being one of those times you're stuck in an unfamiliar store and just want to find something that won't be awful. Or if you're not that knowledgeable about wine and are willing to suffer the ignominy of pulling out a relatively small and inconspicuous book while you peruse a restaurant wine list. Or if you have no freakin' idea what Ukrainian wine to drink while you're making pysanky, this is the book for you.
Not the best for Midwest.......2006-03-22
This pocket wine book reviews wines that are not readily available in the Midwest. If you live in California or New York, it may be a better option for you.
A good reference book.......2006-03-12
At its price and size, unequalled, year after year. I only wish the sections on states such as New York, Virginia, and North Carolina were more extensive, but one can only pack can so much information into a book of this size.
Useful, portable, practical and fun, but pugnacious.......2006-02-21
As a book, Hugh Johnson's annual Pocket Wine Book is a model of clarity. Wine buffs will find a long list of short but distinct entries, organized geographically and alphabetically within a country. There are also many tips on which wine goes with which food, the different ways to serve different wines, and descriptions of under appreciated and under publicized wines such as port and sherry.
Wine lovers know of the rivalry between wine critics Robert Parker and Hugh Johnson, and Johnson fans the flames with two pages poking fun at Parker's 100 point scale. To be frank it is hard not to agree that Johnson's system is better. A simple four star system to rate quality coupled with a highlight to show his own preferences. This strikes me as the correct level of precision for the topic.
However, this trivial dispute about how to rate wine overshadows the real disagreement between the two men, which is about how to make wine. Johnson believes in terroir (geography) and technology while Parker believes in traditional manufacture and grape varieties. Unfortunately, Johnson hardly ever acknowledges that particular dispute with Parker and completely lacks generosity to opposite viewpoints on these two issues. That I tend to see things Johnson's way does not make it less of a pity to me. The last failing costs the book one star. Or perhaps I should give it 96.5 points.

Idispensable as ever, Oz Clarke's now-classic pocket wine guide has been thoroughly and meticulously revised and updated for 2006, with much-anticipated lists of favorite wines, top values, and producers and regions to watch, as well as with new vintage reports.
As user-friendly as it is complete, Oz Clarke's Pocket Wine Guide 2006 lists each wine, grape, winery, producer, and region alphabetically for easy reference. It is a perfect pocket reference for novices--and essential for the seasoned wine lover wanting the latest information.
Customer Reviews:
Better Than Hugh Johnson.......2006-03-27
This is a terrific wine guide. Oz Clarke is knowledgeable and concise in his descriptions and often spot on. But best of all, the guide is totally alphabetical...you don't have to go to the country or regional section first...it's all one big section.
You can learn a lot from Clarke. but if you want a guide that helps you at the super market, the typical wine store (not one in NYC)...then get Andrea Immer's guide. Ever soooooooooo practical.
A GOOD SECOND-LINE REFERENCE VOLUME.......2006-02-23
While a decent enough compendium of wine info, it doesn't hold up against Hugh Johnson's better organized, more insightful guide. A good backup source for additional info but not what I'd go to for my primary research.
Over 1,600 entries on over 7,00 wines.......2006-02-06
With its A-Z organization, truly 'pocket' sized narrow format with a durable hardcover for lasting reference, and survey of wines from Napa to Lebanon, Pocket Wine Guide 2006 is a recommended reference pick for any who seek at-a-glance information. There are over 1,600 entries on over 7,00 wines, plus tips on top values and favorites and advice on how to match wine to food. The latest vintage information assures a current guide.

Outdated way to do car research.......2005-12-30
Would u save u money u self just go do car reseach online instead much more accurate and share opinion from otheer owner. An dis Free try Edmunds of the best out there for u new car research.
I can't believe I'm the FIRST to review this great resource!.......2005-12-15
For the great majority of car buyers, this is probably THE BEST resource. Unless you're into super-performance or the finer points of car technology, it's probably the only resource you need.
For any car that you want to check, Consumer Reports tells you clearly what type of car it is and who it's for, how reliable it has been, how satisfied its customers have been, and how much it holds its value. There's also info on performance and various routine "specs," definitely enough for 95% of us. If you're an EXTREME car enthusiast, you may be disappointed; this book isn't like the "harder-core" car publications. But Consumer Reports does an excellent job of including what most of us would want to see -- and can UNDERSTAND! After all, much of the material in the "harder-core" publications is Greek to us, right? And actually some of the technical material in this source is also a little tough-going, but not so much that it's intimidating. I think it's just enough to help us stretch our technical knowledge, without turning our brains to mush.
Consumer Reports is renowned for its "reliability" ratings, and indeed this information is probably the most valuable and most distinctive part of what CR does on cars. And in fact, this aspect should be of interest even to the "enthusiasts," because the harder-core car publications don't have anything like it. The reliability ratings are presented in a form that's easy to learn and easy to grasp at a glance. While a good reliability rating doesn't guarantee that a car will be good, it definitely stacks the deck in your favor.
An aspect of the "reliability" system that Consumer Reports doesn't get enough credit for is how excellent are its criteria for defining and determining reliability. Some other organizations (including very well known ones) use criteria that have little to do with what most of us mean by "reliability" -- their surveys focus mainly on "number of complaints," regardless of how significant the complaints are. For example, complaints about rattles, or radio reception, or about wishing the car had more power, get counted as problems and count against the car. (Often those organizations don't use the word reliability but some other term like "quality," but the media and the public usually don't get the distinction.) Consumer Reports focuses on problems more related to the basic functioning of the car, which is what most of us are more concerned about.
Consumer Reports is also renowned for being perhaps the most objective and neutral evaluator of products, free from influence of manufacturers and other interested parties. From what I've ever been able to tell, the reputation is well deserved.
The one quibble that I have with their car ratings is that they seem perhaps to lean a little too much toward practicality and don't show enough appreciation for certain kinds of upgrades. For example, they tend toward the idea that paying extra for a Mercury Mountaineer over a Ford Explorer is a waste, likewise an Acura over a Honda or a Lexus over a Toyota. But once you realize that apparent bias, you can just take it into account in making your own decisions. And besides, there's a lot to be said for practicality.
Book Description
Over 40 million used cars are sold each year, yet the average person has very little idea what to pay for one, or ask as a selling price. First published in 1926 for banks, auto dealers, and other businesses, the Kelley Blue Book quickly set the standard for used vehicle pricing guides. In 1993, the book was finally made available to the general public. Published twice a year, the Consumer Edition of the Kelley Blue Book Used Car Guide includes current trade-in values, private party values, and suggested retail values on over 10,000 models of used cars, trucks, and vans. Covering 15 model years, the book includes VIN numbers, original list price, easy-to-use equipment schedules with values for optional equipment, and a table of acceptable mileage ranges by year. The comprehensive "How to Use this Book" section offers helpful advice on buying a used vehicle.

Review of Wine Report 2007.......2007-01-10
The Wine Report 2007 is packed with valuable information including up-to-date, expertly written analyses of global wine regions. All serious wine aficionados should keep a copy handy for quick reference.
Not a book for H. Moon "MHC".......2007-01-10
H. Moon, you should never have purchased this book! Wine Report is not a book for anybody, it's not even a book for just any old wine drinker. It's for true wine fanatics, wine geeks, wine nerds. It's unashamedly elitist. Sales should be restricted to those with a certain level of wine knowledge. It's for those people who already know the basics of Bordeaux and, indeed, a bit about Lebanon. If you expect more information on Bordeaux than Lebanon in an annual guide, then you need to be guided by a traditional pocket reference, and frankly nobody does that better than Hugh Johnson. The amount of change annually in emerging wine countries like Lebanon obviously far exceeds the amount of change annually in classic regions like Bordeaux. The geeks and nerds amongst us who have a traditional level of wine reference in their skull desperately seek to keep up to speed on what is new or has changed throughout the entire world of wine. That includes Bordeaux, of course, and David Peppercorn covers it admirably, but knowledgeable wine enthusiasts expect and understand that the amount of change in Bordeaux will be relatively minimal.
Review the contents before buying this book........2006-12-26
This book may be helpful to some wine lovers. But, there's problem in the
organization of the book. For example, only 9 pages are allocated to
Bordeaux wine. It's the same number of pages for Lebanon wine. I'm not
a fan of Bordeaux wine. But, most wine lover will need more information
of Bordeaux, Italy and Chille wines contained in this book.
