The Merriam-Webster paperback Spanish-English Dictionary is an excellent reference for my high school Spanish classes. I teach 1st through 3rd year Spanish and I recommend this book to all my students. Not only does it contain 80,000 words and 100,000 translations, its comprehensive treatment and vast store of various usages and phrases is invaluable to a student learning Spanish (and a teacher teaching it). The first 20-some pages explain how to best use the dictionary, and the next 40 pages are a mini-course in Spanish grammar, punctuation, and parts of speech. And at a listed price of $6.50 it is a bargain! Besides straight definitions of words, many synonyms and idioms are included. I highly recommend this dictionary to anyone needing to translate from English to Spanish or Spanish to English.
Good to keep in your backpack.......2007-09-03
This is more complete than my mini spanish-english dictionary, but less complete than some of the bigger ones that my classmates own. The beginning has some information about spanish and some practice activities, which several classmates have found helpful. Great price and reasonable size.
A Good Tool.......2007-06-19
I bought this book to help me communicate at work. I ended up actually giving it to a Spanish speaker to help her with her language acquisition. I no longer need it at work as I have a translator now but if I ever loose my translator I'll be picking up another copy. I'm sure this would be great for traveling too.
A terrific Spanish-English dictionary.......2007-06-02
This one has it all! An overview of the language structure, irregular verb conjugations, context-driven definitions, pronunciation guide, etc. I have been working to learn Spanish for the last five months using an excellent software product and this dictionary is a terrific addition. Additional vocabulary is very useful and their ideas about usage coincide with a fluent co-worker's views. Extremely useful.

I found this Dictionary very helpful as a quick reference while traveling within The Dominican Republic. It was easy to move through and would recommend it as a reference guide for anyone learning Spanish.

I am astounded at the review that is listed below me. Talk about nit-picking!
This is the only pocket dictionary that is sturdy enough to carry around in your pocket without falling apart in days. The Oxford dictionary is held together with cheap glue. This is just fine for my purposes. If I need to look up an obscure word I just wait until I get home to my bigger dictionary.
Disappointment.......2003-04-21
I am usually Merriam-Webster's biggest fan of its products. Although I have several up-to-date unabridged Spanish dictionaries, I bought this one to see if it portrays the revised Spanish alphabet correctly and if it treated special topics coherently. I was disappointed on both counts. Although the Spanish Academy along with its sister Academies in 1994 decided to ignore the letters CH and LL for alphabetization purposes (including them in the letters C and L, respectively,) the letters CH and LL still remain part of the 29-letter complement of the post-1994 Spanish alphabet. If you look under Z in in Spanish side of the dictionary, it notes that Z is the twenty-seventh letter of the alphabet. This mistake is inexcusable, especially in light of Merriam-Webster's normally stellar quality in its reference materials. My advice is to not buy this paperback Spanish dictionary, but to instead invest your money in the pocket Oxford Spanish dictionary if you want a very good, small, paperback up-to-date Spanish dictionary. I hope Merriam-Webster gets it right in their next edition.

i purchasd this with a meriams english dictionary.its been a learning experience for both my mom and i.we have been learning the exact meaning of alot of words in spanish.being a mexican from the usa i do not want to be a dumb mejicano and that includes my mom as she shares this knowledge with me.who said that you can not learn at 60 and 80 years.
Useful and fast, though could be better.......2006-11-05
I got this dictionary because I couldnt get a decent one on internet. It is a useful system, the dictionary will recognize if the word typed in is in English or Spanish or both, and will let you decide which function (noun, adjective, article, etc) you want translated. Its fast and helpful. What I found dissapointing is that from 10 words I look up, 1 does not appear. And also, that many entries in Spanish use mexican as main dialect for expressions rather than using a combination of Latin American and also Spanish varieties.

I own 2003 version. I like the flexibility of the software on my desktop -- no need to go look for the word in my other dictionary.
What I hate about this product is the absence of verb conjugation. If you type 'tienen', it won't guide you to the verb 'tener' unlike other dictionaries I have used.
I also have the Webster English dictionary; that product is definitely better than this Spanish-English dictionary.

Excelente para latinos.......2006-01-25
I teach English to Latinos, and I like this book for my students for a number of reasons.
1) Large number of entries
2) Good knowledge of latin Spanish and American English (other dictionaries lean too far toward Spanish of Spain)
3) Large enough print (that's really for me, the geezer)
4) Low cost
5) and not least, because the cover is in Spanish. That makes a huge difference to my beginning students in their acceptance of the dictionary.

Webster's Spanish-English dictionary is an excellent book. Useful for Spanish class in school, or even good enought to help on a trip to Spain. The book is easy to use and makes translations quite simple. I highly recommend it.

Spanish-English Dictionary.......2000-08-16
This year I've become fast friends with a woman from Venezuala. She has this book and that is how I know how great it is. Since she has only been in this country almost one year, it has been invaluable to her, and me as well.
We have used this book numerous times to translate the entire gamut of topics, words, items and meanings. And we've had a hilarious time as well. Such as when she needed to understand the difference between; 'snicker,' and 'sneaker,' 'boxes' and 'bucks,' (which she initially thought sounded the same!) Of course the killer of them all was when she ordered a 'coc,' not and not a 'Coke,' in our local Applebee's!
Now I'll be able to have my own copy for when we are on the telephone, and to help be better understand what she and her relations are talking about when they are speaking Spanish!
I truly hope that I'll continue to pick up the Spanish language as quickly as she has done, with the help of this book. Thank you, Pat
