5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-07-20

I've lived in Colorado since 1989 and have spent an unbelievable amount of time in the mountains here. I purchased the first edition of this book at a little gift shop at the top of Monarch Pass, gave it a permanent home in my Jeep, and I haven't looked back since. It's a fairly pricey book, but given the accuracy of the information contained within, not to mention the time and effort it takes to amass that information, it's worth every penny and then some. Mr. Wells has driven every trail personally, and the maps, presumably created from a fusion of USGS maps and personal observation are very clear and useful.

Apart from the individual trail guides, which are laid out cleverly using Colorado's ski slope difficulty symbols (green circle for easy, blue square for moderate, black diamond for difficult), there is a lucid and very in-depth introduction as well. This isn't a couple of hastily written paragraphs admonishing you to use caution and get out there and have fun, but rather a nearly 20-page essay on how to be a safe, conscientious, and well-informed backroad and trail driver. It's very useful and relevant information, thoughtfully and intelligently presented.

Bottom line: If you plan to explore Colorado's wonderful backroads and trails, buy this book, period. Give me this book, my GPS, camping supplies, food and drink, and my camera, and I could happily wander the Colorado Rockies in my Jeep for weeks!

5 out of 5 stars wally's world.......2007-03-08

This book is the best trail guide that I have been able to find. I use an ATV as most of the trails are open for ATV's. The descriptions of the trails and directions to navigate the trail have been excellent. The distances to the turn points have been accurate. Mr. Wells is now writing books especially for ATVs and I can't wait.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-02-24

This is the absolute best guide to Colorado Trails I have ever seen. The explanation of each trail is very good and the directions precise. The book gives you the areas on the trail that will be more difficult, places to see and things to do along each trail, and practical advice from someone who has actually been on each trail. The book is divided into geographical sections so you can really plan your trip around whatever area you are visiting. Whether you are wanting easy going family trails in your stock SUV or hardcore driving in a fully outfitted rig, this book should be your companion.

5 out of 5 stars Area Covered.......2006-02-06

I wasn't sure whether to order volume 1 or 2. I found this info:
Vol 1: "covers spectacular areas south of Interstate 70 including Ouray, Silverton, Telluride, Crested Butte, Aspen, Buena Vista, Vail, Leadville, Breckenridge, Idaho Springs, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Pikes Peak Region, Sangre De Cristo Mountains and Great Sand Dunes National Park."
Vol 2:"this book covers trails in Northern Colorado. Many trails are near Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins.Other trails are near Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Loveland, Nederland, Grand Lake, Winter Park, Central City, Rollinsville and Battlement Mesa."
I ordered volume 1 and we love it.

5 out of 5 stars Your easy to use Guide to Colorado back roads.......2005-08-29

I bought both volumes. I found them very useful and easy to read and understand. The maps are simple and easy to navigate. There are B & W pictures that give you an idea of what you'll see along the way. I've used these books a lot with my Stock Jeep Wrangler. I have only found two downfalls with the books. The first is the Binding. I've used my copies so much the pages have been taped back in to keep the book together. The other problem is that the books are now about five years old so the road conditions have deteriorated with all the wear and tear and some have been closed. But it gives me an idea of worthwhile trails to try.

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!.......2004-08-03

This is the essential guide for any fly fisherman who lives in or is planning a trip to Colorado. I am a recent transplant to CO and have been stumbling through trying to figure our my local streams. The amount of private property in this state is depressing with no fish/hunting signs everywhere (compared to my home state of Oregon)and going on road trips with the hopes of fishing can be quite frustrating. This book describes, with maps and hatch charts for all the major and many of the minor streams in the state where to go and when and then what to use once there. I can now take a road trip without the frustration of running into private land everywhere and find good fishing.

This is the ultimate travel companion for fly fishing in Colorado, don't leave home without it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Fly Fishing in Colorado.......2003-03-18

Marty Bartholomew has not only proven himself as pro for Ross Reels and Scott Rods, an elite fly tyer, and one of the classiest individuals in the fly fishing industry, but he has now proven that he can write the most informative book available on fly fishing in Colorado. As a former fly fishing instructor, I often referred to this book as "The Bible on Fly Fishing in Colorado." Bartholomew attacks every aspect of the waters covered in this book from where to fish it, what to use, how to get there, when hatches are taking place, and even where to park. The Flyfisher's Guide to Colorado essentially takes the reader on a guided trip to the water he or she desires. This book is certainly a must have.

    5 out of 5 stars Complete Colorado.......2003-03-05

This book "The Fly Fisher's Guide To Colorado", is a book that stands alone in a sea of fly fishing books. A well written book indeed as author Marty Bartholomew, takes you on adventures throughout the state of Colorado. Every detail is in the book as well from hatch charts to hospital locations it is all in here. This is the most complete book I own, period. I feel this is the best choice if you are in the Colorado region, to get all the facts. There are many different versions, about various states, so many others won't miss out on these great books. I as well, met Marty at the Denver expo, a true class act!

5 out of 5 stars Good planning book.......2002-02-16

I bought this book to begin planning a trip to Colorado for a week of fly fishing. This book is a good place to start. It gives a good run down of pretty much all the rivers, creeks and lakes in the state, what to expect there, what sort of fish are there, fishing expectations and hatches for different times of the season, successful flies and information on getting there - such as the road may be muddy and impassible in wet seasons. It even tells you what sort of goods and services are available in near by towns. Anyone fishing in Colorado would benefit from the book but I particularly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Colorado and are yet unfamiliar with fishing there.

5 out of 5 stars Good prep for trip.......2000-07-17

A friend had loaned me her copy of this book - and I had to have it. Combines the best of a fly fishing guide book (including hottest patterns for certain water), as well as recommendations for places to stay, and for fly shops. Thanks to my husband for buying it for me! That Amazon Wish List thing works!

    Book Description

This is a canyon hiking guide to the Colorado Plateau, which covers the southeastern half of Utah, the northern half of Arizona, the western 1/5 of Colordo, and a small part of NW New Mexico. This new 4th Edition has been undated significantly beyond the 3rd. The author went back to almost all canyons, or at least to the trailheads, to check out the mile post markers, etc. Also, about half a dozen less-interesting canyons or hikes from the 3rd Edition were eliminated; while about a dozen new & more challenging hikes have been added, plus another 32 pages. This 4th edition contains 320 pages and 191 fotographs, about 90 of which are new.

The new canyons are from scattered locations in southern Utah, primarily in Zion National Park, and the Escalante River, San Rafael Swell & Robbers Roost country, along with major updates on slot canyons on the Navajo Nation. Other big changes to this edition are the addition of about a dozen new technical slot canyons; that is, canyons where you need ropes and rappelling gear to get through. This adds another dimension to excitement and challenge, and opens many new hiking areas previously closed to many of us. All these technical canyons are now either bolted-up, or have slings or webbing around boulders, making them ready for rappelling.

The general direction for this book, is toward slot canyons, which everybody likes; but it retains easy & fun hikes to canyons with Anasazi ruins, another favorite. So if you're looking for petroglyphs or pictographs, and cliff dwellings or ruins, which some people try their best to hide, then this is your book. In the back of this book is a section listing the Best Hikes, including for the most part Slot Canyons, then best hikes to see Indian ruins, and Native American rock arts sites. Below is the Table of Contents.

    - Author's experience, adding a personal flavour.

    5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book.......2007-05-23

Controversy surrounds this hiking guide. On the one hand are those who criticize Kelsey for giving innacurate directions, exposing the pristine lands of southern Utah and northern Arizona to more people, and giving ridiculously fast hiking times. On the other hand are those who find this guide extremely helpful in exploring the Colorado Plateau canyon country, land which is open to all. I used different editions of this book for over a decade and found the book invaluable. This newer edition contains many beautiful color photographs and updated maps.

Admittedly, the book is a bit eccentric. Kelsey insists on giving directions in metric, though this is certainly helpful to the many foreign visitors who visit the Colorado Plateau. I agree that an index would help as well. But the amount of time and energy that went into the research for this book must have been staggering. I never had a problem finding a trailhead or route with Kelsey's directions and maps. And after one hike, I had a general idea of how my hiking times compared to Kelsey's. His books have always contained ample warning about potentially dangerous canyons like the Black Hole.

His book has helped me to explore canyons in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-07

Color photos, through coverage of hikes, lots of tips for traveling the backroads to these trails.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Available Guide for the Area.......2007-04-16

Michael Kelsey guide books inspire only two reactions--you love them or you hate them--and I must admit to being a fan. These are not the greatest guides ever written, those would be the Steck "Loop Hike" guides, but for this area of the planet NOBODY knows more than Kelsey. The "readability" could be better, and yes, there is no index, but this book will get you to explore places nobody else even mentions. Kelsey does appear in the "fotos" (Kelsey spelling--kind of annoying, really) but I find this provides helpful scale. If you are buying a guide book for artistic photos, buy Sandra Hinchman's book--Tom Till did most of the shooting. Alternatively, you could just buy one of Till's books--they are ALL spectacular! Kelsey's hiking times ARE quite fast, but he gives these in the "Author's Experience" section and provides more "realistic" times in the "Time Needed" section so I don't see the issue. As for the metric system, well the USGS has started printing topo maps in meters so you might want to get used to it now.... The bottom line is this--if you have the canyoneering experience to be thinking about exploring these areas this guide is your ONLY choice!

5 out of 5 stars Kelsey's Guide to off the Beaten Path.......2006-06-07

Sure Kelsey has an ego thing about himself being in all his photos, and the hiking times are off by 50% (Add that 50%, however, no one else has come close to offering a guide to such remote places. I've used it to find indian ruins, weird in-the- middle-of-nowhere canyons, etc. Most of his info is quite accurate. People who can't find something through his descriptions probably would become lost looking for anything. Most places he mentions you'll never find another soul at...that's the best part.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Mountaineers!.......2007-02-07

I can't say enough about this book. The most accurate and most helpful information of all the 14er books. My favorite thing about it is that it provides info for all 4 seasons. Most 14er guidebooks, like Roach's, only provide info for summer hiking, but I'm not willing to sit around 9 months out of the year.

This is THE BOOK to get if you're looking to climb the 14ers. Buy this one first, then cross reference it with some of the others.

5 out of 5 stars Dawson Makes You Get Off Your Duff..........2002-07-17

... and get out to the mountains he loves.

He was the first person in history to ski down all of Colorado's fourteeners. He's climbed all at least once and many several times. Among his accomplishments are four ascents up the Diamond face of Longs Peak, so it is no surprise that Longs Peak figures prominently in this text. Dawson began climbing at an early age, and has written several other guide books for hikers in Colorado. His illustrations are excellent, and his narratives are brief enough to keep your interest and meaty enough to provide the information most are looking for.

    5 out of 5 stars The peakbagger's best friend.......2002-06-22

Having climbed Colorado 14ers for more than 30 years, I've used all available guidebooks. First rule, remember that the info in the book is often wrong -- unless you're willing to think for yourself, avoiding mountains is the best bet. After that, to me Dawson is the best guidebook ever. Roach is good too -- it's good to have both. But in spite of the price difference, Dawson's 2 volumes are well worth it. And please, tread lightly!

5 out of 5 stars Year Round Guide is Tops.......2000-09-23

I've read seemingly every 14er guide available. Much of the information overlaps as one can imagine. However, what really sets this (and the companion volume as well) one apart is the truly four season information that it provides. Louis gives you ratings for summer and snow climbs as well as ski descents. None of the other 14er guides I've read give you that. These volumes are often compared to Gerry Roach's books which are excellent in their own right. However, in my mind the information in Louis Dawson's guides is better as many of us climb in seasons other than summer!

5 out of 5 stars a great guide for year round climbing.......1999-04-27

Lou Dawson is incredible, not only does he describe summer routes in this guide but makes one want to get out of their "warm" recliner and conquer some winter and spring routes as well. a must have book for Colorado's 14'ers. While you at it, get Vol 2 as well!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in every way.......2005-11-03

This is a serious guidebook for travellers who take their touring and sightseeing seriously. It covers the Four Corners region of the southwest (UT, CO, NM, AZ) and is divided into four geographic sections. It includes information on the history of each section (in detail), points of interest (fully described), and where to stay/eat (fully annotated). Chapters focus on the canyon country of Utah, the Indian country of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, and the Rio Grande country. There are also a full index and a substantial bibliography. It's everything you could ask for in a guidebook and should be taken along by anyone travelling in this region. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Travelers Bible!.......2000-08-28

My wife and I plannned a trip to the Four Corners area and at the last moment received Journey to the High Southwest as a gift. We read it during the plane ride and made immediate adjustments to our travel schedule. The results were so good that we continued, chapter by chapter, to use Mr. Casey's guidance and suggestions. For those uninitiated in the region, or even experienced Four Corners visitors, we strongly suggest this guide. It will provide very accurate and useful information to anyone who uses it. Read the entire book - before you go!

This is a great travel book, providing quick and easy to reference to the lay-of-the land in the four-corners region in the style of a virtual tour of the area. The author takes you along his journey, showing you what to see and do, how to get there, where to eat, sleep, shop--or simply soak up the sublime beauty.

    5 out of 5 stars Best Guide.......2007-10-17

This guide saved our group countless hours of research in finding the best and most efficient use of our limited hiking time while on our trip. One of the best guides on the subject.

    5 out of 5 stars Rocky Trails.......2007-08-19

One of the best if not the best hiking guides to the park. I have led and/or followed hikes to 30 or more locales in the park and find this book to have the most complete and accurate write-ups.............

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide book... overwhelming for a first visit........2007-08-13

Lisa Foster's guide book to RMNP is indeed complete, comprehensive, meticulous, and helpful. The amount of detail is excellent and her expertise is evident.

I found it overwhelming for a first visit to the park, however. My husband and I had only three days to dayhike, aiming for an average of 10 miles round trip, 2000 ft. climb each day, coming through the Fall River Road park entrance. It took me several hours studying Foster's book to select what seemed to be appropriate hikes and trailheads to start from. The book is primarily organized by destination, and the destination descriptions do not provide mileage and elevation change from trailhead -- this is instead provided in a helpful table at the back of the book. After a while, I found myself starting at the table in the back to look for suitable mileages, then flipping to the front of the book to read about the destinations and identify trail head locations on the maps.

This book seems better designed for experienced RMNP users who are looking for more information on how to reach all the named destinations in the park. Beginners like me would benefit from a "recommended dayhikes section" or something to help a first-time out-of-town user more quickly hone in on great hikes for a short stay.

Due to its comprehensiveness and solid construction, the book is heavy. I found it too heavy to hike with so I ended up copying notes by hand on some of the off-trail destinations and carrying those instead of the book. This worked, but I'd have preferred the book. Not sure how to improve this other than perhaps making the guidebook 3-ring with removable pages.

5 out of 5 stars The RMNP Guide for Explorers.......2007-05-12

Lisa Foster has hiked to every named destination in the park, and has provided a manual for you to be able to get there also. Her numerous descriptions are necessarily short, yet the book is still too fat to want to carry in a pack. You should own this book if you want to take the road less travelled. She is a serious hiker and a technical climber, and the book is best for those who like to push themselves to new levels. She provides alternate routes to the same destinations, and includes helpful information to enable the reader to know what routes are within his or her own capabilities. Very short descriptions do not include many facts about what to enjoy along the trail; for that I recommend Hiking Rocky Mountain National Park by Kent Dannen.

5 out of 5 stars The Premiere Book for Hiking in RMNP.......2007-03-17

I just wanted to take the time to say this is the best book for hiking in RMNP. It includes excellent and detailed topographical maps and trail details. The author actually hiked every single trail she wrote about in the book! This provides a very linear feel to picking the best hikes to do in the park if you just don't have the time to hike all of it. Highly recommended and the only hiking book for RMNP you will ever need!
