5 out of 5 stars Superior to other Brazil Travel Guides.......2007-01-27

I purchased this book, as well as a Fodor's Guide to Sao Paulo and Discovery's Insight Guide to Brazil. I have found this book to be more descriptive and detailed in identifying areas/places of interest for the tourist. The Insight Guide has a lot more photos, and is nicer to look at, but this book is far more informative and functional.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant source for information traveling in Brazil.......2006-11-06

I suggest this for anyone traveling in Brazil.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but............2004-10-19

Recently used this guide for a visit to Sao Paolo, Parati, Brasilia and Rio. I did appreciate the more functional approach (settling, exploring) compared to rough guide or lonely planet. Also, the intented audience appears to be a bit older / less backpack / more money, which worked out nice in this case (Brasil is cheap :-). The information appears to be fairly accurate, and did indeed help us book hotels and visit attractions.
However, not all was well. For Rio nightlife try to find other sources of info. One area where this frommers fails badly is maps. Not only do the maps contain errors - attractions drawn in at wrong locations - but the range / level of detail is way too limited. The lonely planet is much better in this regard (although that guide does have some major other problems, like shameless selfpromotion of other items in their stable)

2 out of 5 stars Should be titled "A Portion of Brazil".......2003-06-18

I've enjoyed the other Frommer's Guides I've used, particularly the one for Costa Rica, so I ordered Frommer's Brazil online. I was quite disappointed to discover the book covers only a small portion of Brazil's geography. Not only is the sparsely inhabited interior not covered, the southern states, home to more than a million people and a vacation destination for hundreds of thousands of Brazilians and Argentines are not so much as mentioned. It's improper to title the book "Brazil" when it's really about a dozen or so major destinations.

4 out of 5 stars Frommer's Peru.......2007-03-08

It was great, very informative. I love the Frommer's travel guides, I buy one for every trip I take.

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2006-11-11

I thought that Frommer's Peru was very helpful and quite accurate with the exeption of one restaurant in Cusco, Greens, which had moved and become vegitarian. It's descriptions and opinions were enlightning, if not at points overcautious. I would have liked more on Lima. The bood discouraged travelers from going there, but I thought it was very nice in Miraflores. Highly recommended for anyone considering going to Peru.

4 out of 5 stars Well laid out and very contemporary.......2005-01-09

For the last seven years I have lived in, and traveled throughout Peru. Frommer's keep surprising me with new relevant information about Peru. Kudos. Especially informative is Frommer's first section: "What's New in Peru". In Frommer's the Cusco, the Machu Pichu and the Inca Trail section alone take up 100 pages and the information is excellent. If you are going only to these locations then this portion of the guide is reason enough to buy Frommer's.

In the world of Peru guides (this year I have reviewed five) there are two types of guides; those guides that are written for the wandering/explorer/backpacker who wants travel to the normal visitors' sites, but will also go `off the beaten track' (Footprint, Let's Go and Lonely Planet [see my reviews]), and then there are the guides for the traveler who like comfort, have money and will visit only the main tourist attractions: Cusco [Machu Pichu], Puno [Lake Titicaca], Arequipa [Colca Canyon], Lima, Iquitos and the lines at Nazca (Fodor's [see my review] and Frommer's).

Disappointing is Frommer's recommendations of restaurants in Cusco. At least half of those that were recommended bombed out, and the rest were fair to good; but none of the Cusco restaurants deserve the `star' rating of exceptional that this guide liberally gives.

Cusco has, at most, two or three restaurants that deserve `kudos' and your money, but because cooks (and the occasional chief) change as frequently as table napkins it is best to ask a professional Cusquena (doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc.) where they recommend eating. Take care when asking the local guides for restaurant recommendations, as they will normally direct you to a tourist restaurant and thereby get a free meal and commission from the restaurant.

Frommer's is much better than Fodor's in many aspects, and in comparison to all the guides, Frommer's excels in providing you with the important and essential information needed to plan your trip (entry requirements, health, travel resources, when to go, suggested itineraries, recommended reading, etc.). Thus, if you are staying on the tourist route then you will do well to have this guide in your knapsack.

4 out of 5 stars Good on Frommer's!.......2003-01-03

It appears to me that the first reviewer may have a chip on his shoulder and ought to have stayed home, wherever that is. As someone who was raised in Perú and return often, I believe that the author of Frommer's Perú did a very good job, especially considering that most guidebooks don't include much about how tourism is endangering many heritage sites in the country. Neil Schlecht obviously cares and let's readers know, politely, that they need to walk softly through this beautiful nation.

I loved the fact that I recognized many of the places he recommended - La Casa de Melgar in Arequipa is indeed a marvelous place to stay, for example and it was a thrill to read his section on Cajamarca, my second favourite Peruvian city, after Arequipa.

I liked his Best of Perú section, although I believe that he missed on the best markets/shopping section and would have liked to read more about how tourists are also endangering the textile and folk art traditions given that they want cheap shopping. For example, more and more textile artists are using synthetic yarns and dyes because they're fed up with visitors bartering them down to pennies for an object that took weeks, if not months to make. Take a moment to consider that the folks who make authentic Peruvian textiles and folk art need to eat, feed and educate their children and have a right to have their work and themselves treated with respect and dignity - heads up to the first reviewer!

Perú is, in many ways, like India in that one could travel there every year for the rest of one's life and not see everything. Personally, I would follow Schlecht's advice and get off the "tourist trail", into the north, the central highlands - the Mantaro Valley, Tarma, the Chanchamayo Valley for a taste of the *real* Perú, not yet the flavours of the month.

Good for you, Neil Schlecht and good for Frommer's. I hope that you will continue to publish Frommer's Perú and update it frequently.

1 out of 5 stars Overpriced and overrated.......2002-10-29

I was really disappointed with this, the most 'recent' book about Peru. I have recently moved here, and was looking for some information about places to go and things to do when I had holiday time. The information is often incorrect, the prices are exorbitant and the whole book reads more like "go where I suggest because they let me stay here free in exchange for a promotional blurb" than a truly objective presentation of options.

The whole book is skewed towards the requirements of people who are going to use their two weeks holiday to come here and spend all their money with people who will tell them what they should and shouldn't see, (and screw them on the prices in the process), and really only see the Peru that they could have just as easily seen on the Discovery channel for 1000th of the price!

Prices quoted mostly all pander to(and therefore legitimise)the inflated prices that the tourist industy sharks try to inflict on travellers. General rule - take prices quoted and reduce them by a third, and you are still being generous.

Travellers here should try to ensure that their money is going to the people who actually work for it and need it - not to those who live in the top 15% of the income bracket - and Frommer's Peru is just helping the rich keep the poor down.

I say go with the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide, and buy the "Inca Guide to Peru" when you get here (if you can't buy it elsewhere). It is a little older now, but the maps are excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Unbalanced reporting.......2007-10-16

The trouble with travel books like Frommer's is that they don't tell the negative side as thoroughly as they do the positive. That's why I like Rick Steves' European guidebooks. He is opinionated and quick to tell both sides of the story.
This Frommer's book on Buenos Aires was useful on our trip last week but did not discuss how massive and basically filthy and jammed with traffic the city is. The sidewalks were littered with broken pavement, garbage and dog droppings, even in the best of neighborhoods.
In one section, Frommer's relates a day trip via ferry to nearby Uruguay; it made it sound as if one were visiting the Magic Kingdom. In truth, it was just a few streets and shops; certainly not worth the trouble.
There was no warning about counterfeit Argentine currency. Apparently color laser printers are pretty common down there because there are plenty of homemade 20, 50 and 100 peso bills that look perfect to the untrained eye. A warning would have helped here.

3 out of 5 stars undistinguished.......2007-08-30

Blah. How in the world did this get 4.5 stars? Not well laid out which make it dense and difficult difficult to read. You can get better and of course fresher information searching the NYT. And no introduction of practical stuff - one of the only entries on crime is where one of the Bush twins had her pocketbook lifted. I lament the end of the great Access guides.

3 out of 5 stars Ignore dining and hotel suggestions, great side trips.......2007-08-25

I never like dining suggestions in Frommer Travel Guides. The very best are expected, quality food at high prices. But their best values are usually not the best values in that respective city/country. What I did like from this book was the side trips, which I highly recommend. Particularly nice was my buquebus trip to Colonia, Uruguary. I went in the winter and it was very scenic and a nice contrast to Recoleta, the neighborhood where I ended up renting an apartment in Buenos Aires.

5 out of 5 stars buenos aires book.......2007-08-09

was easy to understand and had an understanding of what to look for when I travel there in the future. good recommendations and will look for them when I am there. Thanks!

3 out of 5 stars A book for old people.......2007-07-23

Some parts of this book are good, for example the guides to find restaurants and hotels - actually these parts are much better organized than the Lonely Planet book. But the downside of this book is that it can't tell you what to see in the city unless you want to spend your holiday looking at graveyards, museums or buildings with odd colors. It lacks parts about where to go at night for a drink or to dance, where to find a cinema, where to buy clothes, and where to find the zoo among other things.

1 out of 5 stars About how to disrespect other cultures in the world........2007-07-13

It shows a complete lack of knowledge about Latin American cuisine, which was expressed by disrespectful comments.

To the author: Yes, "Arepas" is one of the venezuelan main dishes and that's the reason you can find the arepa everywhere.......and they also offer other great variety of dishes made out of: beef, fish, pork, etc.
What other kind of food were yo expecting to found during your trip to Venezuela?. And I think that It's the kind of meat or food you could find in many other places around the world: pork, fish, beef, etc.
You should have more respect about any other culture you will get to visit. Be more open minded, have more respect and do not criticize the same things or kind of food you easily could find in your own country.

2 out of 5 stars Enjoy getting lost and vague reviews? Then this book is for you!.......2007-10-16

Ugh! Where to begin? I went on a three week tour of Santiago & Buenos Aires with a friend of mine last month. I brought this book and he brought Lonely Planet's and let's just say my book ended up slowing us down as we lugged it around in out daybags. To start, this book only has ONE map each for Santiago and BA. And that map isn't even in great detail. Where as LP's book had a much larger general map of Santiago followed by many more zoomed in maps of each burrow.

But you might be thinking to yourself, "So what, I'm a good navigator, I don't need a stinking map!" Well then good day to you, fine sir! But do you need suggestions and reviews on local sightseeing stops? Oh! So sorry! Because this book doesn't have any of those! I should clarify, they actually do have some suggestions and recommendations, but they tend to be along the lines of "Go here, it's fun" and that's it. No real info on what you'll do once you get there, no honest review as to whether it's good or not. Just a location, phone number, and a sentence or two saying "This is a local 'whatever' and it's a popular tourist spot." Gee, THANKS FROMMER'S! I felt like I was reading a Yellow Pages, not a travel guide.

Even the restaurant suggestions were sub-par compared to their LP counterparts. I'd never used either travel guides before this trip, but I learned my lesson during this last trip and will never be buying one of Frommer's Travel books in the future. If you enjoy stress-free vacations and not wasting money, then I suggest you live by the same motto.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great help for cheap travel.......2007-08-14

Frommer's covers well information about expensive hotels and restaurants. It is not very helpful if you are looking for cheap travel lodging and meals.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of general information.......2007-03-17

The book contains lots of general information and provides a thorough overview of Argentian. The Buenos Aires description and maps should be helpful when there. Tips and Side Trips are really informative and helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Need Price Updates.......2007-01-17

It is a good book with useful information to plan the trip. However, double check prices published in this book (need update) when you are in Argentina or Chile.

5 out of 5 stars Enticing adventures, splendidly wrapped.......2000-03-28

This book, part of a new series, describes 25 adventures in 7 South American countries, 5 each in Venezuela and Argentina, 4 in Peru, 3 each in Ecuador, Brazil and Chile, and 2 in Bolivia. Whatever mode of transportation you may prefer, there is something to fit your taste, from flying to rafting and 4-wheel-driving, from mountain-biking to horse-riding and hiking. Each adventure is described in 6 to 12 lavishly illustrated pages, and the back of the book has a 60-page section with practical information. Clearly, these 60 pages cannot cover all the possibilities in all the areas discussed, let alone other areas in the 7 countries the book deals with (I had a wonderful adventure week in the Ecuadorian Amazon, for instance, that is not mentioned in the book). If you want to make detailed plans for an extensive trip on your own, you will need more than this volume. But if you are looking for armchair adventure, or for inspiration for that adventuresome part in you that is itching to go to some far-off place, or if you just want to get started with lots of attractively presented information about some highlights that you can build a trip around, this is a wonderful book. It is probably the most visually attractive guidebook I have seen, with lots of National Geographic style photography that will make the would-be adventurer's mouth water (even more attractively presented than the volumes in Fodor's Exploring series, or DK's Eyewitness guides, or the Insight guides series). Whether you are looking to canoe through a flooded forest, stay on a ranch in the world's largest swamp, hike some of the continent's highest mountains, watch wildlife along the coast, or search for dinosaur bones, this book has an adventure wrapped up for you.

3 out of 5 stars out of date and out of touch.......2005-08-23

I took this book with me on my vacation to the southwest and I found it disappointing. The restaurants it suggested in Flagstaff were all quirky or trendy. Lake Havasu City is completely different from what they describe, as the major tourist section went bankrupt TWO YEARS AGO. It describes Las Vegas, but none of the natural and historic wonders so close to it like Valley of Fire State Park, which is filled with ancient petroglyphs, incredible scenery, and wildlife. It was somewhat useful, but I'd recommend getting it from the library just to get some ideas of places to go. Don't rely on it for comprehensive, up-to-date information.

4 out of 5 stars Decent guide.......2006-12-18

Has all the basics you would expect. Definitely worth a buy - along with THe Partier's Guide to Rio (this has some of the other "must do/see" items like particular foods that you've gotta try).

2 out of 5 stars too basic.......2003-12-05

The guide wasn't that helpful in defining our itenerary or discovering Rio. The guide only covers hotels and restaurants and the restaurants were either tourist traps or filled with other travelors... hard to get a taste of local tradition.

2 out of 5 stars OK but not great.......2007-09-19

The guide covers most of the key places but lacks in indepth research. In my opinion, it does include all of the best places to stay and visit, and overestimates some mediocre places.

Book Description

According to the Latin Business Chronicle, Chile is the third most popular South American destination and had 1.8 million visitors in 2005, 10.6% more than in 2004.

The 2003 designation of Valparaiso as a UNESCO World Heritage site, increased interest in Chile's wine industry and in adventure travel to Patagonia, plus a continued fascination with Easter Island all contribute to the rise in tourism.

Chile is one of the most stable South American countries and appeals to a variety of vacationers with romantic beach holidays, wine-focused vacations, snow sport options, alpine attractions, and desert tours.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Chile guidebook.......2007-09-22

I just went guidebook hunting at the local bookstore, and I settled on Frommer's Chile & Easter Island.. It's the most recently updated, and that makes a big difference. Santiago is in the midst of finishing (and beginning) some very big infrastructure projects. For example, Santiago has a new modern (but very confusing) bus system, and the metro more than doubled in miles over the past year. This Frommers guide has a great color map with metro stops in the front cover.

The info in the Lonely Planet and other guidebooks is a couple years old. Plus the Frommers book seems to have the best information about private tour operators.

Other bonuses include a chapter on Ushuaia, Argentina.
