Great "preview" for D.C. trip!.......2007-09-30
Purchased prior to our first trip to D.C. The kids enjoyed reading it as much as we did. Was a great help in planning our days in D.C. Recommend using this and Frommer's Washington D.C. with Kids (Frommer's With Kids), especially if travelling with children in a range of ages as our were--7, 9, and 16.
Great book!.......2007-07-20
We are traveling to Washington, D.C. and this book is going into our suitcase as a reference while we are there! We have really enjoyed reading it and learning about Washington, D.C.
Gift item for Christmas.......2007-01-04
Got as a gift but spent time reading through.
Looked like it gave great suggestions for teachers too on what to visit and where to go while on field trips.
Great tips for getting around Washington DC.......2006-08-24
My family and I recently took a trip to DC, and brought along this book. It had lots of great tips on what to see and where to eat. We've used the "Boston" version of the book for years, and I was glad to see that the "DC" version was just as helpful.

Over the years, millions of kids have been dragged to Washington to see the grand edifices and historic monuments of our country's capital, and most of those millions have returned home without the desire to ever see a statue, senator, or Supreme anything ever again. But it doesn't have to be like that. Beth Rubin not only knows Washington D.C. backwards and forwards, she knows kids, too, and that makes for a very good guidebook. Well organized, with a variety of useful information on family hotels, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, this is a full-service guide with a family focus. Aside from such necessities as which hotels offer cribs and rollaway beds, Rubin knows where your children can take simulated orbital flights, dine with U.S. representatives, touch a moon rock, crawl through an African termite mound replica, pet a horseshoe crab, or go swimming, biking, or in-line skating. It'll take the family Washington trip to new heights.

Great aid for trip planning to D.C. with kids in a range of ages.......2007-09-30
This book was a tremendous asset in planning our family's first ever D.C. trip. This was our first real encounter with big city transportation and I felt really sorry for those families who were lined up at the Metro ticket machines trying to decipher them. Also some really great hints for "cheap eats"(Union Station has something for everyone & won't break the bank),beating the heat, and sight-seeing options when the "big attractions" were impossible to get to. This guide was invaluable in planning our days with children who range in age from 7 -16. Purchased Fodor's Around Washington, D.C. with Kids (Around the City with Kids)which was simple for my children to read and enjoy. Using the Fodor's book in conjunction with this Frommer's my family spent many enjoyable evenings over 4 months planning our trip.
Excellent book for travelling with young kids.......2006-11-29
I found this book to be very helpful and complete. The humor and affection that the author shows for the area and kids in general was very welcome departure from the otherwise stuffy travel guides I'm used to reading. I found her insights about timing visits, local restaurants to check out, and walking tours to be very handy. Reading her guide was like getting advice from a helpful Mom. It's sold me on the Frommer Kids series, and I'm looking forward to using them on my next trip!
Must have for travel to DC-- even without kids.......2006-07-04
I have four editions of this book and I would not consider going to DC without it. It is worth the investment to make sure that you are getting the latest and greatest information. I have NEVER had a problem with the information if the edition is current. A quick flip through the sixth and eighth editions shows how much info has been updated, plus almost every listing provides a web address (in addition to all the other contact information) so you can get more detailed information if you desire.
When we are in DC, this book stays in my backpack at all times. The maps are clear and conscise, and the authors helpful hints have saved us a lot of time. I have all the info from the washington.org and AAA and just about everything that it covered in scores of brochures and booklets is in this book. It truly is the only book you need!
Great for things to do, not so for hotels and restaurants.......2006-02-13
This book is an excellent guide for things to do in the D.C. area with kids. We live in D.C. and were looking for new things to do, especially with our 3 year old in mind. We bought the book and learned about exciting locations and activites that we never knew about. For example the Doll and Toy Museum, Naval Observatory and Amazonia exhibit at the National Zoo.
The restaurant and dining guides though are way off, the do not include the best food (including child friendly) nor convenient, fun and affordable hotels, infact they recommend some of the worst! Of course we've gained this knowledge from living here for 6 years, still would expect better form a guidebook...for food dining and hotels I'd recommend Lonely Planet's guide to D.C. area.
Only other downer was driving to the Childrens Museum only to find it was closed until 2009. Still I have the 6th edition and the 7th edition hopefully is updated with this info.
A Must-Have for Any Family Heading to Our Nation's Capital.......2004-04-23
If you've never been to DC with kids, you need this book. I used it primarily for its comprehensive reviews of family-friendly hotels and restaurants (of course, you should call the establishments yourself to verify that the information is up to date) smartly divided into geographical areas--downtown, Georgetown, Capital Hill, etc. Maps pinpointing sites and attractions were equally helpful.
Book Description
Washington, D.C. is the perfect spot for a fun and educational family vacation. Rich in history and learning opportunities for children and adults, this cultural mecca is full of unique family experiences that will create memories to last a lifetime.
Now freshly revised and updated, this comprehensive book is your personal tour guide to our nation's capital.
• Up-to-date reviews of the top family attractions
• Budget- and family-friendly lodging, dining and shopping
• Suggestions for pre- and post-vacation activities
• Maps of Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area
Customer Reviews:
not a lot of new information.......2007-09-10
Authors' tone indicates they are clearly amazed by Washington DC, but this doesn't translate into any new or interesting information about the city for visitors. Lots of info out of date.
Excellent Book.......2006-11-10
I ordered this book to help plan a trip to Dc for my family. I was excellent. This book was also passed to our high school principal who used this book for a personnel trip to DC. This was his favorite book to use for learning about DC.
I found this book VERY valuable and will be used for future trips to the area.
Bad Metro advice.......2006-09-23
This guide may be good at highlighting attractions, but it's woefully impractical for real-life touring.
We used--or, I should say, tried to use--this guide on a recent trip to Washington, D.C., and we wound up very frustrated with it. We were attempting to do as much as we could by Metro and taking the car only when it was practical and necessary. We followed the guide for Metro stops and wound up walking, sometimes miles, with two young kids (aged 6 and 3).
For instance, we took the Metro to the zoo, got off at the stop recommended in the book and had an uphill walk for more than a mile. Someone told us later that there would have been ample parking, had we driven. I wish the guide had mentioned it. Another time, we followed the instructions on which Metro stop to use for the Lincoln Memorial. We popped out of the station onto a street filled with mainly government office buildings and no signs directing us to the memorial, which, again, was a long hike away. (A kind man saw our "lost" looks, asked if we were looking for the memorial and pointed the way there.) We found out from locals that it would have been better to have taken Metro stops along the Mall--possibly the same distance but with more diversions, like a carousel and grass to run around on, for youngsters.
This is not a trivial complaint when you're dealing with kids. And, given that this book is specifically about touring D.C. with kids, I would have expected the authors to do better.
By the time we were leaving, it had become a joke to consult the book's maps and station recommendations. We came to the conclusion that whatever it recommended, we should do something else.
Great Guide for touring D.C. with kids.......2006-05-24
I found that this book was an interesting and direct source of information that helped me to find places to visit as well as how to get there. It is a wealth of information for where to take kids of all ages that would be of interest to them in Washington, D.C. I found it helpful also to know the phone numbers to be able to call about questions that I might have before visiting the places. I would highly recommend this book to anyone such as teachers or parents who are interested in taking kids to the Washington,D.C. area.
A Survival Guide.......2006-05-20
While this is a great guide for parents, it is particularly helpful for those who may not have children at these ages. An Aunt, Grandmother, family friend who wants to spend time with children but doesn't know where to start and may not have a crew of friends with children needs this book. It can be the beginning of really great time with and for the children and adults together.
Book Description
Each book focuses on 68 terrific ideas for family days, from museums and puppet theaters to skyscrapers and parks. Written by parents who live in the cities they cover, these books are smart about what kids like--and about what parents need. All the details for planning are included: addresses, phone numbers, admission prices, and age-appropriateness. "Hey, Kids!" info boxes provide fun facts and interesting trivia about the destination, and "Kid-Friendly Eats" features recommend three or four places to grab a bite to eat nearby. Fun to read and easy to use, these handy little guides make it easy to plan an enjoyable, hassle-free day with children in the world's most popular cities. They're perfect idea books for every city parent and grandparent, and indispensable aids for families on vacation.
Customer Reviews:
Not so helpful.......2005-08-24
I was disappointed with this book. After reading many positive reviews I decided to buy it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. First, it is not up to date. Several museums (most importantly the Children's Museum) either did not exist any more or were under renovation. Make sure to check individual attractions before relying on the book's info. Second, what I thought was missing was information about parking availability for each attraction. If you are driving, this is something you defintitely need to check. Third, information regarding restrooms and/or changing rooms would have been helpful since this is a book for families and young children. For example, there was no restroom in close vicinity to the Washington Monument and this would have been helpful to know. Finally, a map would have also been useful in order to plan an outing for the day. Although the book provides information regarding the closest Metro stop, it is difficult to map out a plan for getting from one place to another.
Just the facts, kids!.......2004-04-23
I was skeptical when I first saw this book. After all, it's pretty small. Yet on a recent family trip to DC, I used it more than the two others I bought. No hotel reviews, no Metro maps, this book simply tells you about 68 child-friendly spots to hit--one spot per page. I particularly liked the sidebars that clued you on places to eat near the attractions, like the inexpensive US Department of Agriculture cafeteria across the street from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the fun facts. One omission, however, The International Spy Museum!
This is an okay pocket book.......2003-05-20
The book was just okay. Not much detail on the acctrations. I ordered it with Washington, D.C. with Kids 2002-2003. I used Around Washingtion with Kids as a guide and read more detailed information in Washington, D.C with Kids. The good thing is that is is small enough to throw in my backpack and bring along during my tour.
You'll Use it Over and Over Again.......2001-10-11
I purchased this for my Mother when she moved to the D.C. area so she'd have ideas of where to take the grandkids. Everytime we're there I see it out on a counter or on the nightstand. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins have all used to it while visiting. It's a great gift and a great reference. We've definitely gotten our money's worth!
Low-cost family fun!.......2000-07-14
What a help in planning low-cost, fun outings for our family! DC offers such great opportunities, but sometimes it seems too hard to organize a day together. This book helps enormously, with age suggestions for each activity, parking/public transportation information, and tips about all important food and bathroom locations. A must-have to make the most of the wonderful resources in our Nation's Capital!

Excellent Resource for Families.......2006-03-15
It's clearly written, very informative, and enjoyable to read besides. I learned a lot from this book. I learned there are many more things to see and do in Washington than I knew. It's an invaluable planning aid, since I now know which sites will bore our son and which he will enjoy. The book also gives ideas on how children can have educational fun in our capital, tips on getting around, and more.

A "must have" for anyone visiting Washingon, D.C........2004-02-08
Washington, D.C. is the most unique city in the world. Whether you are visiting the area or live there, one cannot possibly know the wealth of information found in Washington, D.C. with Kids. I grew up in the area, but I have lived away for more than twenty years. Without this guide, I would have difficutly finding the places I want to see when I am back. I wish there had been such a book when my kids were younger. It's always such a challenge finding entertaining and worthwhile activities when on family trips. Imagine showing up in a city and having a resource that gives you a map, a subway map, addresses of places, times of operation, and even suggestions for meals! This book even indicates which venues are appropriate for various age groups. All of that and more is found in this superb volume. It's a "must have" for anyone planning a visit to Washington, D.C.
A Most Helpful Guide.......2004-01-18
I found this book easy to read, full of useful and fun information. I have recommended to friends that do not have children and are planning a trip to the nation's capitol.
The information is interesting and concise. The book is well-written and includes many interesting and little known bits of information, as well as the more typical tourist spots.
Washington With Worth.......2004-01-14
This book makes seeing Washington so easy and painless. The sights are grouped according to location, so you know what you can see together in a short amount of time. I discovered gems in Washington that I never knew existed! And just when the kids are getting cranky and hungry, there is a list of good places to eat. The directions by metro are very helpful and well done. I highly recommend this book to natives and visitors alike!
