ESL companion.......2007-08-09
Excellent! I use it in conjunction with English Grammar for Dummies in my ESL classes.
$11.55 is cheap for what this book can do for you.......2007-06-16
I wish I had saved my English books from grammar school because it seems that English is being taught differently these days and not for the better. I am learning how much I have forgotten.
great product.......2007-03-09
This is a great book with a lot of helpful exercises to make sure you've really gotten the concepts taught in each lesson. There is still a little too much emphasis on the grammar lingo but it's a lot less than most books. In my opinion, you shouldn't have to know what kind of verb it is to use it correctly.
Very good product.......2007-01-28
I am very pleased with this product, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their grammar.
Book Description
A few years ago, a magazine sponsored a contest for the comment most likely to end a conversation. The winning entry? "I teach English grammar." Just throw that line out at a party; everyone around you will clam up or start saying "whom."
Why does grammar make everyone so nervous? Probably because English teachers, for decades – no, for centuries – have been making a big deal out of grammar in classrooms, diagramming sentences and drilling the parts of speech, clauses, and verbals into students until they beg for mercy. Happily, you don't have to learn all those technical terms of English grammar – and you certainly don't have to diagram sentences – in order to speak and write correct English.
So rest assured – English Grammar For Dummies will probably never make your English teacher's top-ten list of must-read books, because you won't have to diagram a single sentence. What you will discover are fun and easy strategies that can help you when you're faced with such grammatical dilemmas as the choice between "I" and "me," "had gone" and "went," and "who" and "whom." With English Grammar For Dummies, you won't have to memorize a long list of meaningless rules (well, maybe a couple in the punctuation chapter!), because when you understand the reason for a particular word choice, you'll pick the correct word automatically.
English Grammar For Dummies covers many other topics as well, such as the following:
- Verbs, adjectives, and adverbs – oh my!
- Preposition propositions and pronoun pronouncements
- Punctuation: The lowdown on periods, commas, colons, and all those other squiggly marks
- Possession: It's nine-tenths of grammatical law
- Avoiding those double negative vibes
- How to spice up really boring sentences (like this one)
- Top Ten lists on improving your proofreading skills and ways to learn better grammar
Just think how improving your speaking and writing skills will help you in everyday situations, such as writing a paper for school, giving a presentation to your company's big wigs, or communicating effectively with your family. You will not only gain the confidence in knowing you're speaking or writing well, but you'll also make a good impression on those around you!
Customer Reviews:
Very Complete, for an introductory book!.......2007-08-29
Most self-help grammar books out there give you about a dozen rules of thumb to follow, without actually teaching you anything about grammar. Those books suck, because you can not apply what you learn to more than the 12 instances that are perfectly similar to an examples given. This book is different. It actually teaches you grammatical rules, so you can apply what you learn. I think it is the best introductory self-help grammar book out there.
Invaluable reference for english students.......2006-09-02
A career change forced me to return to college. After almost 10 years since graduating from high school, I forgot a lot of the rules about English writing. English Grammar for Dummies helped to refresh my memory, as well teach me a few things that I did not learn from my high school english teacher. I was able to pass English 101 with an A (not as easy as it sounds when your instructor is published author and PhD in literature). I am taking English 102 this semester and will continue to refer to the Dummies book as frequently as the class text. I recommend this book for any student, or anyone who does formal writing on a regular basis.
Refreshing.......2006-07-04
I like to keep this book within arm's reach when I'm at the keyboard; it's simple and easy to use. Granted, the Chicago Manual of Style is an important book to have on hand, but EG for Dummies and Strunk and White are so much handier, and less clunky. Like other Dummy books, it speaks to the reader, not at him, like someone is talking with you as a friend or favorite teacher in a nice, relaxed manner. It's like taking a refresher course which, unless you're a professional proofreader or writer, we can all use from time to time.
an excellent study guide for the SAT writing section.......2006-06-29
Since grammar is not routinely taught or emphasized in the classrooms, it is imperative that high school students destined to take the SATs have a comprehensive guide to grammar which is simple but complete. This is a great grammar teaching/learning tool, and produced great results.
Great beginning book.......2006-03-21
Great book to refresh your grammar skills. Really liked this book, very easy and great book to read.

The fun and easy way to speak Spanish
With Mexico the #1 international destination for Americans, over 14 million secondary school students enrolled in Spanish classes, and Spanish the primary language in many neighborhoods from L.A. to Miami, this should easily be the most popular title in our new phrase book series, following in the footsteps of Spanish For Dummies (0-7645-5194-9), which has sold more than 300,000 copies.
Susana Wald is a writer, teacher, and translator.
Customer Reviews:
Not useful for building vocabulary or sentence flexibility.......2007-06-03
I bought this book because I thought it would be helpful. After taking it home and reading it, I didn't like it at all.
This book gives you full sentences, with full translation, and pronunciation guide. It doesn't break it down into translating the sentence word by word.
For example:
No, es muy facil.
No, ehs mooy fah seel.
No, it's very easy.
So in order to say the sentence, you have to remember how to say the entire sentence. They do not translate each word. So let's say you couldn't remember the whole sentence but you could only remember the one word, the word for easy. It would be helpful to know the Spanish word for 'easy' was but this book only tells you the full sentence.
See the picture above.
In addition, the sentences are NOT flexible. You should be able to use the sentence in a variety of ways and build up your vocabulary and sentence usage. For example, they could also write: No, its very ... difficult, big, small, blue, hot, etc.
I thought of keeping it and buying another one. But why keep the book if I didn't even like it. In fact, I found a better one "Rick Steves' Spanish Phrase Book and Dictionary" and was even cheaper!
Rick Steves' Spanish book, like many others I saw at the bookstore, had a brief built-in Spanish-English and English-Spanish dictionary in the back of the book. Very helpful!
This Spanish phrases for Dummies had NO dictionary in the back. As you can see from the picture above, it would only give you a short vocabulary list of maybe 5 or 10 "words to know".
Therefore, this book is NOT helpful for learning vocabulary or expanding your sentence variation. It's just that, Spanish phrases.
Dummies Nothing! This is for the Smart ones!.......2007-05-12
Take this pocket sized "For Dummies" book along on your next trip below the border (or favorite Mexican Restaurant)and you won't be talking like a gringo anymore! Ok, maybe your espanol won't rollll out as fast as a native's can, but you will definitely be able to find most places you want to (like the ever important best sales shops .. and little girls rooms). You might even be able to decipher what in the world the people at the next booth are saying about you! I am sure glad the subtitle on this one is: A Reference for the Rest of Us!
Spanish basics.......2006-11-10
Easy to read and learn Spanish phrases. A great complimentary guide to Spanish for Dummies.
long-distance learning.......2006-03-04
My 11-year-old granddaughter and I each have this book, which we use to study Spanish together...she in another state several hundred miles from me...via e-mail. We are just beginners, and this book is ideal for looking up simple phrases to exchange. It is such a neat way to share a learning experience with a loved grandchild!

Customer Reviews:
I started Learning Chinese the first day ........2007-10-14
I Really like this book and started Learning Chinese the Very first day I used it.
A good foundation.......2007-08-01
Unlike the big book "Chinese for Dummies" this book provides a decent foundation for the beginning user. It introduces the reader to the four tones right from the start. You are introduced to important things like counting and addressing people respectfully (Sir, Mr. Mrs. etc)After that, you're basically taken on a tour of conversational Mandarin, given helpful phrases for the would-be tourist looking for food, gift shops or trying to find Uncle Wu, their long lost relative.
You won't be a Mandarin expert at the end of this book, but you will have a good foundation on which to build future lessons. It's also a good reference to carry with you, as its size makes it fit quite nicely in a small carry-on bag or even a back pocket.
You don't have to carry around a novel AND you can find a bathroom in most small towns of China... what more do you need from a reference book? (Just kidding, but it IS a great tool)
Not for Dummies.......2007-07-28
The book is not bad. It is not for dummies but does make learning/reviewing a little more interesting. I wish it had more of a vocabulary listing int the back.

Japanese for Dummies.......2007-05-18
I bought this book thinking it would provide me with easy to use phrases for a trip to Japan. I found it anything buy easy...it spent too much time providing grammar lessons and had very limited sections for useful phrases. I found other books more useful.
Learning Japanese.......2007-01-05
I think the "Dummies" books are a great place to start learning Japanese. It gives you a general understanding of the language and now I'm incorporating other more "workbook" style books into my learning. If you're trying to teach yourself Japanese (like me) I would start here, then look elsewhere for more detailed and comprehensive books. Also, it always helps to make a Japanese friend that can tell you when you're pronouncing stuff wrong!

You have the opportunity to learn on the go, taking advantage of time normally wasted. Study in your car, while exercising, doing yard work anywhere you can safely listen to a CD player. No accompanying books are needed to help you complete the lesson activities. Why can t learning be fun? It can! Linguaphone has chosen to present the allTalk series in an entertaining, soap-opera format. No dry old teacher with a monotone voice putting you to sleep, you follow the adventures of a visitor to a Spanish-speaking country as she interacts with individuals in a variety of interesting situations, learning the language and beginning to understand the culture. Actually learn the language Tired of spending money on language courses that don t work? Did you ever think the problem could be with the course and not you? With Linguaphone s unique learning sequence: Listen, Understand, Speak, you will find yourself actually using the language in no time at all! You are presented with a unit of the language, it is then broken down and explained to you, then you put it back together with greater understanding than just repeating what you may not have understood in the first place. . . . and learn it well! The all Talk methodology not only teaches well, but will have you speaking and understanding basic spoken Spanish in no time at all. Other popular all-audio courses require four times the cds, four times the money and four times the time to do what Linguaphone s allTalk Basic does with 4-one hour CDs.
