The Ultimate Source.......2007-09-26
I generally use online German-English dictionaries as sources for looking up new German words while I'm performing my computer based interactive German language course. However, when these online sources give meanings that don't seem to make sense or apply (and this is becoming more apparent as my level of German language skills increase); then I refer to the Collins Unabridged German-English Dictionary, 5th Edition as the ultimate source that always has the word meaning and other helpful information that I'm looking for.
Errata in this dictionary.......2007-09-22
I was very disappointed in the dictionary. On page 502 within the blue box in the middle
it has "... träumen in ihrer Lieder ... this should be Liedern ( dative plural). Errata in other books are not so serious - but in a reference book, particularily a dictionary, a mistake like this calls into question the accuracy of the whole dictionary!!! I liked it otherwise but I feel if there is one such basic error there could be more. I have returned it to Amazon.
The complete dictionary.......2007-07-05
This is a fantastic dictionary! The incorporation of innumerable idiomatic and everyday phrases is very helpful. In addition, though this is a big dictionary, it is not as heavy as you may think. I highly recommend this lexicon to any German student at or above an intermediate level.
superb dictionary.......2007-02-15
I am a foreign language teacher and did a huge search for a German dictionary to support my self-education in German. This is the only up to date German dictionary which is easy to read and beautifully designed. The blue ink used for the words in contrast with the black ink for the text makes this dictionary very easy to use. There is a center section with very useful information, for example how to set up a business letter, an informal note, salutations and greetings, etc. It is a large book, but I am confident after my research that there is nothing better on the market which has modern updates.
Amazing dictionary / Not for travel.......2007-01-10
The wording is limitless, I work for a German company and used it while on site for mainly technical phrases. There wasn't a word that I couldn't find and that inclused a lot of slang. I will say this is not a great book for airtravel, it is gigantic and weighs about 5 lbs.

A disappointment--Shame on Harper Collins!.......2006-08-30
I ordered this dictionary based on all the fulsome reviews. (Some of) the good news: This dictionary tends to give phrases rather than words in isolation. Example: Close = in der Nähe, etc. This is essential in German because the preposition takes a particular case. The bad news: This dictionary is printed in the tiniest type, on the cheapest, natural-coloured paper just one step above newsprint. I've had things wrapped in better paper than this! It's also saddle-bound. This might seem a very superficial criticism, but a dictionary, particularly pocket size, gets a tremendous workout. Mine just arrived, but I can see it starting to fall apart in a month or two. The less-than-white paper and tiny print make it hard to read. After all the effort that went into the content, it's a real shame that it was so shabbily printed. Yes, it was cheap, but I would sooner have paid twice as much and get something that would hold up for a couple of years. I've had my Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary for 16 years and it's still going strong. The content of this one is better, but.... Shame on you, Harper Collins!
Very nice dictionary :) !!.......2006-07-10
If you aren't sure about buying this Dictonary, I would really recommend it because it is very good. It has excellent German-English translations as well as English-German.
Maybe good for travel,.......2006-03-07
but not of much use otherwise. I know most people will rate my review "not helpful", since that always happens to negative reviews. But so be it.
I wanted to replace my old Cassells dictionary which was published 1976 and therefore out of date. But as it turns out, this dictionary will not replace it. One reason for it, is that a lot of words are missing. This is understandable given the fact that it has only 400+ pages and my Cassells has 1200+. But somehow I missed that when ordering it, since it got so many good reviews. One other problem is that the words it contains, are not really explained and usually contain only one synonym, where in my Cassells it has a whole paragraph explaining the different meanings (and usuage) of the word.
To sum it up, you get what you pay for. It is dirt cheap and it will be good enough for travel. But otherwise it is pretty useless.
Maybe my review is too negative, but I have to counter all the raving reviews.
Great help!.......2003-01-22
Used this book all of the time in my German classes! Wish I had had this sooner, would have made everything a lot simpler. Its easy to use, easy to understand, and great when you need to find something quick. This should be a book every college student, studying German, should be required to have.
A useful book, although a little date.......2002-04-29
When this book was first published in 1980, the producers wanted it to be 'the most helpful one-volume dictionary for students, linguists, and all translation needs'. Twenty-two years later, I would dare to suggest that if this aim has not been met, then this dictionary has not fallen far short. There are over 200,000 words and phrases in both English and German. All words are defined in context (this is especially important for the novice student) and the clear abbreviations make the dictionary easy to use. Moreover, there is also a four-page guide in English and German on how to use this dictionary to assit the user further.
On account of its age, this dictionary is inevitably a little dated, but it is still a very useful linguistic tool for students of German. I heartily recommend it.

Great for Travel.......2003-01-22
Nice, Compact, useful words for traveling in and around Europe!
An excellent dictionary for beginning to advanced levels........1999-08-15
The Collins Gem Language dictionaries are extremely convenient to use, even with one hand! Because of their size and ease of use, they are non-disruptive if one forgets or needs a word in conversations. Using this dictionary, beginning through advanced level students can read modern newspaper articles and liturature. The entries are correct and usually always give a variety of correct pronouns for use with verbs in idomatic cases. As a German teacher, I recommend the Collins Gem German Dictionary above Langenscheidt's. It is smaller and more convenient, less expensive, and the entries are more correct and easier to read.

My favorite Dictionary Series........2007-10-06
This has got to be my favorite German-English Dictionary out there, or at least, the Harper-Collins series dictionaries are. I love the College dictionary, but this one is pretty great. I would recommend the newer editions, but still, if you can find a great price on this one, I'd take advantage of it. Has simple layout and extremely useful Grammar and Verb section in the back! What a deal!

Faithful and true.......2003-12-04
I bought this dictionary when I first started learning German. I've been studying German for years and still use it. I still turn to this book first when looking for answers. This book will not teach you German. It is a dictionary, a very good one.
user-friendly but nothing too great really.......2002-01-30
This is obviously a concise dictionary, but unlike for instance Webster's New World Concise German dictionary, this one would satisfy only intermediate level language needs and is kind of large for its coverage - compare for instance with the Oxford Pocket German which will do the same job except for the basic grammar part this one has at the back (despite all this both latter are more easy to use than the Webster's which is more sophisticated but also a little tiring to find words and then read). So this dictionary, i believe has no extraordinary features than its competitors and even some setbacks just mentioned. The grammar section is helpful but if you need more extensive coverage, and direct and rich grammar information beside each entry this wont do.
Great Dictionary for Students!.......2000-10-04
I am a German instructor for adults working in the automotive industry. My students really appreciate this dictionary, especially the grammar section! Harper Collins dictionaries are always good for translators, but this one is perfect for intermediate-advanced students who also need a grammar reference. Great dictionary. I carry it with me when I'm teaching!
Excellent German Dictionary !.......2000-01-19
After taking over a year of German language classes, I decided to buy a good German dictionary that had everything in it that I frequently needed to look up (besides just word translations). This dictionary was the best. The best part is the huge grammar section in the back. It had everything I wanted, in bigger print than most other dictionaries. Look up "fand" and it says "finden". The only downfall is that it doesn't list all the verb tenses for irregular verbs when you look them up, but it compensates somewhat with a pretty good verb table in the back grammar section. The only dictionary that gives all the tenses right away is Harrap's, but it has excruciatingly small print.

Customer Reviews:
Loved everything but the binding.......2002-12-12
I took a copy with me on an exchange year in Germany. It was invaluable as a reference and learning tool, and I used it heavily in the first few months. Perhaps this is why the bingding glue began to disintigrate, leaving me with a book in chunks. The translations, however, are precise, cleaar, up-to-date and idiomatic. I especially appreciated the short middle section, which included a brief grammar, a collection of common phrases, and examples of business letters, resumes, etc.
Everything a college student needs..........2001-01-28
After some careful research and reading the reviews of all the German-English dictionaries on the market, I decided Harper-Collins was the way to go. I have found it to be very helpful. I especially like the way that the verb charts are laid out. It not only has the common singular form (es, sie, es) but also the du form. That is very helpful when one does not know the infintive form of a verb one is trying to look up. I feel this dictionary is a must have reference for anyone interested in studying German.

- Not an improvement over earlier editions
- Excellent and compact for the on-the-go traveler

Customer Reviews:
Not an improvement over earlier editions.......2005-11-08
Preface: This long review may seem like an awful lot of analysis for a book that's so cheap. But for travelers, a dictionary's importance can far outweigh its price. A couple of years ago I had to check into a German hospital for emergency surgery, with nothing but dimly-recalled high school German and my 5th edition (5E) Collins Gem to help me out. Pocket dictionaries can be your best friends when you're abroad. So it's worth it to choose them wisely.
I've been using various editions of this book for 39 years. I recently bought this 7th edition (7E) to replace my 5E (which came out in 1999). I don't know whether the fault lies in the 7th or the 6th, but this edition is definitely a step backwards.
1. The contents of 7E have been reduced compared to 5E. Not including verb tables, etc., 5E's G-to-E and E-to-G sections were each 308 pages, while 7E weighs in at only 232 and 292 respectively. (Both editions have 45 lines of text per column.)
In addition, 7E has more white space between sections for each letter (e.g., half of the page with entries for "Q" is white in 7E.) I don't trust my middle-aged eyes enough to claim that the font in 5E is a also bit smaller. But I think you can see that there is less in 7E than there was before.
2. 5E had very useful "key word" boxes illustrating many uses of important words. E.g., it had 20 lines devoted to different usages of "doch". 7E has only 4 lines on "doch", and the choice of illustrations is quite peculiar. The omission of "key words" is quite odd, considering that the latest editions of Collins Gem French and Italian dictionaries (both 2005) retain them.
3. As another reader has noted, 7E lacks pronunciation guides in G-to-E, though it retains them for E-to-G. 5E had IPA pronunciations for all entries in G-to-E.
4. The publisher touts the phrase-finder pages added at the back of this edition. However, the phrase categories are organized alphabetically according to the GERMAN names. So it's Einkaufen (Shopping) before Gesundheit (Health). If you're new to German, this will slow you down a bit. Also, the phrase-finder lacks any conversion tables for weights, measures and clothing sizes (unlike that in the Oxford German Minidictionary (4E 2005). So you'll probably want to bring a phrasebook anyway, if you will be traveling.
5. Of course, the main reason to buy a new edition is for new definitions. 5E lacked many definitions relating to the Internet, for example. 7E devotes space to marginally-useful terms like "Doppelklick" for `double-click' and "im Internet surfen" for `to surf the Internet' - you could probably have guessed these pretty easily. 7E also includes "Standby-Ticket" for `stand-by ticket' and the quite cryptic "Standby-Betrieb", which is rendered as `stand-by' without any further explanation. I was wondering whether this is some kind of post-modern organization until I checked an unabridged dictionary, which included an abbreviation for "computer". ("Standby-Betrieb" refers to stand-by operation of PCs, TV sets and other electronic devices.) So I'm not confident that 7E will really burnish my vocabulary.
6. A weak point of both editions is the rather haphazard choice of cultural notes, explaining things like "Oktoberfest" and "Kindergarten". Further to another reader's comments about UK usage, UK cultural references also predominate. So 7E adds a gloss on "TUeV", the organization responsible for checking the safety of vehicles and other machinery. We are told that "the TUeV is the equivalent of the MOT," as if that should resolve any doubts in our American heads. MOT of course is never defined (is it Ministry of Transport?).
If you own the 5th edition, don't bother to replace it with the new one. If you buy the 7E, do bring a phrasebook as well. Also consider alternatives like the Oxford, which is weak on modal words like "doch", but still has some keywords for important verbs, pronouns, etc. (caveat: even the Oxford isn't a substitute for a phrasebook). While I'd give the new Collins Gem only one or two stars compared to the 5E, I give it three or 3.5 compared to its contemporaries.
Excellent and compact for the on-the-go traveler.......2005-02-15
If your plan is to buy a dictionary for studying German, I would buy something a little bit more thorough, but the Collins Gem is the perfect size for taking on a trip (tiny!) and is the best on the market in this class... during my travels in Germany, it was a great aid, and i even found lots of unusual words that i didn't expect of a dictionary like this (including some colloquial words that a lot of dictionaries just leave out due to academic snobbery, but which are essential for basic understanding)... The size is unbeatable since it will even fit in your pocket, the pronunciation guide is perfect, and verbs are given in a table that is sufficient for travel use...what else could you ask of such a small little dictionary that no one will notice as you backpack around or hit the town with 20 million other travel items in your pocket!
Great, although it is basically British English.......2004-11-21
This little German-English::English-German pocket dictionary weighing in at a mere 5.1 oz, is a top contender for space in your international luggage! Its flexible vinyl cover makes it cleanable and durable - we'll let you know how its binding holds up to use and abuse.
There is an excellent 'tho complicated phonetic-symbol pronouncer for English words, but none for German: English speakers take note. A well-explained system of abbreviations assists the size issue. Explanatory sub-meanings are most helpful. Tables are given for common irregular verbs in both languages. A mini-phrasefinder ends this mini-tome. The print is, of course, quite small.
Basics I feel this otherwise excellent book lacks, are guides to words used in telling time and lists of number words in both languages.
I would add a cautionary note to German travellers to the US or Canada and to American English-speakers who may be considering this dictionary: Although American English usage is often carefully noted, the English used is basically British. Because of differences in usage of quite a few terms between the British Isles and the New World, one could be quite misled by some translations from the German! AND I couldn't believe my eyes when a few English words were totally unfamiliar to me - having a Brit in the family, I thought I was "up" on British English. Frankly, it gave me a hearty laugh at my own ignorance and an opportunity to learn, but some might find this unnerving. Don't let this stop you from buying this, though. It could be the same with all of these little fellas - this is the only one I happen to own.
