5 out of 5 stars really outstanding.......2006-05-18

I actually own ALL of this pair's terrific 'best of' series (or, me and the bank anyway)....and they are great at culling out the really local flavor from zillions of local cookbooks, to truly include THE BEST in each of their books. Well done ladies - wish I had thought of it myself!! I hope you don't have to BUY the hundreds of cookbooks from each state- what a great job to have them SENT to you....but everything I really wanted in the New Mexico book- a near neighbor to me, and one I have visited a few times- but not often enough!

5 out of 5 stars A compilation of recipes drawn from a variety different cookbooks showcasing New Mexico's culinary traditions and treasures .......2003-08-11

    Book Description

New Mexico gardeners have long needed this book--a careful guide to the trees, shrubs, ground covers, and smaller plants that thrive in the state's many life zones and climates. In a state where the altitude varies from 3,000 feet above sea level at Carlsbad, to 13,000 feet at Mount Wheeler near Taos, where the annual rainfall is anywhere from 7 inches at White Sands to 30 inches in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where the soil is loose and gravelly, or thick and hard, or dark and rich, this guide, organized by regions and specific cities, will be especially useful. It also includes information on adjacent areas in Colorado and Arizona and in El Paso. In addition to the top hundred-plus species for each location, the author provides suggestions for more adventurous gardeners and information on historic landscapes around the state. He also points out a favorite well-planned and well-maintained garden or landscape that is open to the public in each community.

A landscape architect in Albuquerque for twenty-five years, Baker Morrow is intimately acquainted with how things grow in New Mexico. He is also generous in sharing his personal preferences. He mentions the species he likes "for their toughness, adaptability, and sturdy beauty in a difficult climate," and also the ones he admires for "their cheerfulness and their ability to grace our lives with shade, with helpful protection from the wind, and an endless series of wonderful colors." With many hundreds of native and exotic species readily available, no New Mexico gardener can afford to be without this book.

A thorough, richly illustrated and practical guide to what grows best in every part of the state and adjacent areas.

2 out of 5 stars Best Plants for NM.......2007-06-17

I feel like i wasted my money on this book. it has not helped me pick plants for where i live and i plan to sell in a garage sale!

5 out of 5 stars Really well focused on our state and our climates.......2005-07-24

This is by far the most thoroughly researched and thought out book on landscaping and gardens/plants of any book for any region I have found. What is great is that it is for us and not for Texas or Arizona or Colorado. These states have plenty of mention in other publications...The author even took to the time to research what grows in each town first hand, not by just looking at a USGA map for plant hardiness. I have recommendeded this book to many people interested in landscaping here in New Mexico and I guard mine like it was gold. Don't lend it out, you may not get it back.

    2 out of 5 stars Not a xeriscaping guide.......2005-01-16

I bought this book primarily for the plant listing, and am disappointed. After looking through it, I reviewed the title of the book and realized that it is not actually billed as a xeriscaping guide. There are some xeric selections, but lot of these plants grow great in New Mexico only if you water them like crazy. Some of them shouldn't be planted here at all, such as silver maple (browning at the edges of the leaves by the end of July, not just in my yard, but elsewhere in my neighborhood too), and salt cedar (a significant environmental hazard even within the Albuquerque metro area).
I liked the first part of this book the best - the general overview of gardening in New Mexico is informative and easy to read. The final section of the book, city-by-city plant guides, is just not very useful to me since I only garden in Albuquerque.

5 out of 5 stars Best Resource of New Mexico Landscapes and Gardens.......2001-12-10

Xeriscape doesn't mean ugly. This book will help you find plants that are pretty and that won't take up a lot of water. IT's a great book.

This is our reference book for when we are adding something to our yard. We have a full acre that we are working on (slowly!) and this book has helped us every step of the way.

The color pictures make it easy to see exactly what a plant looks like. The color pictures also help when you are trying to find the name of the tree in some yard that you thought was pretty. The information it has on each plant is very useful- it gives you the area it will grow best in (example: Albuquerque or statewide in the shade or statewide up to 800 feet elevation). The other thing that makes this book a good buy is the plant list for different areas. For example, there is a plant list for Gallup/Grants area. These lists give you trees, grasses, shrubs, flowers and more that will grow well in your area.

This is the best resource out there if you live in New Mexico and want to have a lovely landscaped area.

5 out of 5 stars stop wasting money and water!.......2000-04-07

Keeping plants alive in New Mexico is very difficult. If you're thinking of buying this book you already know this. If you do buy it you'll find out how to solve all of your yard and garden problems. This book tells you everything you need to know to successfully surround your home with attractive plants instead of the tiresome and difficult to maintain bluegrass lawn or gravel pit one sees so often in New Mexico.

Most importantly, the book lists plants suitable for every inhabited part of New Mexico. If you've learned to garden in Gallup but want to know what to plant in Deming or Santa Fe, this book is for you.

The plant lists and photographs make this book an essential money and water saving gardening tool for the New Mexico gardener. Buy it for yourself and give a copy to to your new neighbors!

      Book Description

The first and only guide to bicycling the national parks and adjacent wild lands of Arizona and New Mexico. Bicycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to experience our national parks as many are restricting access to private vehicles. This complete adventure guide to the national parks of Arizona and New Mexico features more than 80 road and mountain bike rides through the parks' most spectacular natural areas. The outstanding variety of natural environments and terrain found in the Southwest, coupled with its rich cultural and historic heritage, make the national parks of Arizona and New Mexico a cyclist's paradise. With this book as your guide you can ride to a secluded overlook of the Grand Canyon from the North Rim; glide through the Sonoran Desert in the company of massive saguaro cactus; or pedal among the ancient ruins of the Anasazi at Chaco Canyon. The routes and trails in this book are suitable for both road and mountain bikers from novice to expert. They traverse the beautiful and enchanting landscapes of the desert Southwest, while taking you to some of the region's most fascinating historical and archeological treasures. Each ride description includes a detailed map, tour directions, information about the trail or road surface, the length and difficulty of the ride, and sights you'll see along the way. A trip-planning appendix for each park tells you where to stay or camp, do your laundry, eat, buy supplies, and repair or rent a bike. More than 80 rides in 28 national parks are described and mapped in detail. Heavily illustrated: Includes 25 professional color photographs of the parks, 75 black and white photographs and 60 maps.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good.......2005-06-18

I bought this book expecting it to be a useless gimmick--especially since I've hated Alley's other mtb guide books. Lo and behold, it's a gem with a specific and useful purpose: if you're going to visit the national parks in these states and want to ride in or around them, this book is essential. I ride and my partner doesn't, and she loves National Parks, where good riding can be hard to find, so this book saved our lives--she would visit the park and I would head out to find a nearby ride. The trail and road choices are good--the treatment of trails/roads around the south rim of the Grand Canyon is the best I've found. Alley casts her net widely around the parks--anything within 60 miles or so of the park counts. Thus the "trails in and near Tuzigoot Natl Monument" is really little more than a short list of trails in Sedona, 40 minutes away. Trail info is good, background info is fascinating, and the maps are the usual. Each park or monument begins with a handy one-paragraph summary of the riding opportunities, e.g. "Near this park you have a choice of two nice road rides, one beautiful dirt road, and three challenging single-tracks." One inexplicable gaff: the book omits Canyon de Chelly, so you're on your own, but you only have two paved roads to choose from there anyway.

This useful guidebook surveys more than 80 ghost towns, grouped by geographic area. First published in 1981 and now available only from UNM Press, it has been praised in particular for its instructions on how to reach even the most obscure sites.

“An invaluable guide to anybody wanting to visit any of New MexicoÂ's ghost towns.”—Howard Bryan, Albuquerque Tribune

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Book, but a little old and not organized the best.......2007-03-05

Of all of the ghost towns books I own or have read by Phillip Varney, this is probably the worst. But that being said, this book is not that bad. It was written in 1981, so many of the sites are not there any more. It is a black and white photos, which is a drawback once you have seen his newer books. The maps are not really laid out very well. Also the chapters are a little confusing as to their organization. I think he has leaned how to write a perfect ghost town book since (his CO and AZ book are great). But the sites in the book are the best sites to see in NM, he didn't leave anything out. I have been to many of the sites and have taken fantastic pictures myself (in color and B&W). Therefore, I know how good the pictures in the book can look. But if you haven't been to any ghost towns before and you want a New Mexico ghost town book, then it is still one of the best ones out there.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2006-10-19

I loved this book. I went on a trip recently to New Mexico and followed one of the paths listed in the book and tried to see if I could find all the places listed. The pictures helped in locating some sites. Some buildings in some of the pictures are gone but it turned out to be a fun and adventurous day trip. I recommend this book if you can get it.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A great guide.......2004-07-12

We've taken several hikes in the Santa Fe area using the Regnier book as our guide. It is excellent and we can recommend it to anyone hiking in and around Santa Fe. We understand she is updating the book at this time. Beginning hikers need the help of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Easy Day Hikes in the Santa Fe area.......2004-01-13

This hiking guide was all we needed for my family and I to enjoy lovely and easy day hikes in the Santa fe area. The book contained great descriptions of the areas covered, including Bandoleer national Monument and Los Alamos. This guide helped us to get into nature without overwhelming us with complicated directions to reach our destinations. The hikes included in this book were excellent selections of the various choices available to the santa fe day explorer. Thank you Linda and Katherine for such good information and suggestions!

1 out of 5 stars Not for the real hiker.......2002-06-23

This book is quite disappointing in its selection and description of hikes. I also purchased Martin's 100 hikes in New Mexico for our upcoming trip there, and would recommend Martin's book much more highly over this one.
