Good Information to help materialize your wish.......2007-06-11
This book one confirmed and validated the knowledge I had aquired from other reading sources. It teaches you to write your inquiry letters and chose a publisher in line with your topic. A helpful source for authors wishing to manifest your goal to have your book published.
Comprehensive.......2007-01-27
This book has it all. Not just the markets and their pertinent contact information, but, also advice on query letters and formatting and anything else you'll need to know. I cannot recommend this book any more highly, it is a priceless resource for a writer.
Must Have For Any Writer.......2006-10-03
While the market's themselves don't change much from one year to another, the Writer's Market is filled with great information from writing tips to new markets. Anyone who is even thinking of becoming a writer should invest it this book.
A must-have for every writer.......2006-08-28
No writer's going to make a penny unless he knows where to submit his work. The Writer's Market is a absolute essential on every working writer's bookshelf, and it's highly recommended that writers update their version each year when the new edition comes out, because the market is always changing.
should have bought it earlier.......2006-08-02
with all the scam and vanity presses on the internet, any poor or new author is going to be lead to believe they can be published by any book publishing site they google, that is why this book is so important for any new author wanting to get published. it not only shows examples of what a bad query looks like but also a good one, which i learned a little too late that all my failed attempts at getting published was because i was acting the same as the person who did the bad example of a query letter. the only drawback with this is that if you don't think you can get published on your own, there's only 50 listed agents in this book which makes it seem i'll have to save up more money and buy the literary agents guide book.

Nothing like it.......2006-10-22
This is simply the most comprehensive complilation of data for the Christian writer endorsed by author's, publishers and agents.
Sally's book.......2006-07-16
I attended a Christian Writer's Conference two years ago, a dizzying initiation into the subculture that produces much of the written material that American (at least) Christians read.
There I heard reverential references to Sally Stuart's annual publication and dutifully picked up my copy at the bookstand.
It truly is a marvelous reference work, published annually in order to track the rapid changes in the industry. Major sections include resources for writers (you never knew there were so many), topical/subject and alphabetical listings of book publishers, similar listings for periodicals and specialty markets, and a section on helps for writers. The latter includes an extensive list of literary agents who will pitch (after perhaps rejecting or reshaping) your work to the right publisher.
Sally's book is what it is: an indispensible gathering in one place of the data you need to get published in this sector. If this is your desire, you'll want to make sure you pick up your copy annually.
Christian Writer's Market Guide 2006.......2006-07-04
I needed this book for the locations of publishers and agents, it is a great tool.
Everything there is to know about the business.......2006-04-19
The first time writer faces a whole series of problems in even getting some to take them seriously. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to a publisher and tell them that you were writing this seven volume series about a boy going to Wizzard's school.
The key is to find a publisher that likes what you do. And that is basically a numbers game -- contact enough people and you will find one that likes what you write. This book is basically a list of people to contact. It covers not only the publishers (book and periodical) but also such things as writing groups, promotional contacts (book reviewers, publicists, writers conferences, agents) -- in short everything there is to know about the writing business with an emphasis on the Christian marketplace.
This book comes out every year, so you get up to date names, e-mail and physical addresses and of course the new publications that may not have a stable of writers.
A Crucial Reference Book for Every Christian Writer.......2006-04-12
Whether you dream of writing magazine articles or books for the Christian marketplace, you need this book on your shelf.
The key is beyond having it in your possession. Study the book and use the many tools built into the pages from marketing guru Sally E. Stuart. Every writer can benefit from her many years of expertise tracking the Christian marketplace.
Every aspect of publishing is constantly changing, Sally gives you the latest scoop in this solid reference book. Don't be caught using out-of-date information. How are you caught? When you submit to an editor who is long gone from a publishing house or a magazine. The annual edition of this book will serve you well.

Great Resource for Writers of Children's Books .......2006-07-22
This is well-organized and has all of the information one would need to access publishers. Agents and publicists, as well as writers, need to have this "encyclopedia" of resources. There is a wealth of information needed for sending book proposals and manuscripts. Just excellent!
The Most Important Tool for the Children's Book Genre.......2006-05-24
Professionals in the children's book genre have been relying on the yearly Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market for 18 years. This guide covers everything writers and/or illustrators would ever need to find a home for their work.
The 2006 edition contains more than 800 listings of opportunities. Book publishers, magazine opportunities, literary agents, contests and conferences are just a few of the numerous types of listings you get in 400+ pages.
Each listing is updated yearly to make sure the contact information, pay rates and specific publishing needs are accurate. Editors of the guide generally work all year long to ensure the listings are up-to-date.
What makes this guide even more valuable are the articles, interviews and also help for those just getting started in the business. The guide could simply be a compilation of listings and it would be a great investment but the fact that these other resources are added make it a powerful tool for any writer or illustrator's career.
If you're searching for markets on your own, you're wasting precious time. The 2006 Writer's & Illustrator's Market does the tedious work for you so you can simply choose an appropriate market and find a publishing outlet for your work.
If you want to write for kids.......2006-05-24
If you want to write for kids, there's two things you need to do (i.e., other than writing your book!): join SCWBI and get this book. The book is full of great advice and contacts. A must-have for all children's writers.

Great for first-time authors!.......2006-03-09

Customer Reviews:
Better Value Than Writer's Market.......2007-04-24
This book contains MANY more magazines than the same year's Writer's Market, and is a much better value for the dollar. They even have hints for Query letters and many other suggestions in the front. Everybody in my writing class borrows this book from me whenever I'm not looking, even though they all have the Writer's Market. It's just so much more useful!
Best of Magazine Markets.......2007-01-16
If there were more than five stars available, I'd use more to rate the importance of this book. For a novice writer, this is an absolute necessity. Contains everything (almost) one needs to know about 'getting published'.
Finding the Right Magazine to Sell Your Articles.......2006-08-29
Best of Magazine Markets is a good reference guide for freelance writers who wish to find appropriate publications in which to sell written material. The bulk of the pages in this guide feature listings of actual magazines and it is here that most freelancers will turn for some quick information on specific publications. This section is very helpful because it breaks down the vital statistics that are important to freelancers in determining whether or not to submit an article. Knowing the circulation, the target audience, and the frequency of publication is one thing, but it is also nice to know the chances for success for a freelance writer and this and other important facts are covered in the "Freelance Potential" section for the majority of the featured magazines. At a glance, an interested writer can quickly see what percentage of the articles are written by non- staff writers, the percentage of articles submitted by authors who are new to the magazine, and other helpful stats.
Magazines that are new to this year's edition are highlighted in one large listing (they also have a star next to their names in the individual listing, for quick reference) near the end of the book. There is also a listing of publications that have changed their names; publications that have changed their editorial focus; and magazines that are no longer published. In addition, there are two miscellaneous lists titled "Best magazines for first- time writers" and "Best for Unpublished writers". Again, these listings help to make the process easier for the freelancer by providing a quick summary of magazines that fit a given category or interest. My only complaint here is that there are not more listings. With these "best of" listings, for example, the book could have been more creative and devised several more categorical listings.
The first part of the book talks about the basics of freelancing and the right way to compose an article on a specific subject. This section isn't as helpful as it could be because it is far too brief. The way it is now, the 2006 edition includes only a tiny amount of material covering these basics; like resume submission, effective writing, copyrights, contracts, etc. This is far too little for a guide like this. True, most people who read this book will be looking at the individual magazine listings more than anything but there really needs to be more information at the beginning of the book to provide a good background into the freelance profession and to make the book more rounded and complete.
One other problem with a reference guide like this is that it becomes outdated quickly. Certain facts, like the magazine's name and its web site, will likely remain the same for a long time but other things like the percentage of non- staff writers, the pay rate, etc., are likely to change in a very short period of time. For these reasons, this is the type of reference guide that some readers might not want to purchase. If you're serious about selling your articles to magazines then I think it is still worthwhile to own a copy for easy reference but some might consider buying this book a waste of money due to the inevitability of change.
Freelance writing can be a good career option and/or a good second income source for others who already have an established career. Whether your writing interests cover a broad range of subjects or satisfy a smaller niche, selling your writing is critical if you want to make a serious effort at writing for a living. Best of Magazine Markets for Writers 2006 is a good starter's guide with some helpful facts about hundreds of publications. It isn't the perfect guide and it isn't as well- rounded as it could be. But it does provide the basic information needed to find the right magazines to sell your articles.

A Complete Survey of the Magazine Marketplace.......2006-06-04
The market for children's literature is really quite large, look at the Harry Potter phenomenom. And while this was extraordinary, more than extraordinary it was a once in a lifetime event, there are still far more opportunity to sell children's writing. This book, put out by the Writer's Institute analyzes this marketplace. It has a series of articles on writing for children, what do children want to read, how to first approach a magazine *with several sample letters), legal issues, common publishing terms and abreviations. Then it goes into getting published, parenting magazines, science and technology writing for children, and so on.
But the real meat of the book is its listings of places to sell your work. There are 670 magazines listed that buy childrens stories. These are listed alphabetically with indexes that are broken down by the type of material that they buy.
Selling a story is a sales job. You need to research your audience (both the publisher and the reader), and approach it just like you were selling a computer or a car. Here is a wealth of information on how to do it.

Ridiculously high!.......2006-10-03
You know I could tell you whether or not this book was good if I had it. But, I can't because this book is ridiculously high! I highly doubt this book would get a lot of sales. How about slicing the price in half at least?
It is a most welcome reference book to have!.......2005-10-01
"Your directory just came, and it looks great. One of our librarians said: "we don't have anything like that", and of course she's right! I hope lots of branches will buy it; it is a most welcome reference book to have! Best to you." Helene Mochedlover, Fiction, Literature, and Language, Los Angeles Public Library, Los Angeles, CA
Book Description
First of all--it's an eighty-page BOOK, not a wall calendar.
Started in 1995 by Wordwrights Canada's Susan Ioannou, who published the issues through 1998, The Canadian Writers' Contest Calendar, the publication was acquired by White Mountain Publications in 2003. In short, each edition contains 80 pages of detailed information on Canadian writing contests, awards and prizes, organized month by month according to their deadline dates. This reference makes much-needed information available for writers and gives them an incentive to polish and disseminate their work. By promoting the contests it also helps our literary magazines to stay afloat.
Awards for published books have also been listed so that authors and small publishers can consider their entries. Profiling our Canadian Awards can only mean greater importance is placed on them, and a greater understanding of their cultural significance can be obtained from coast-to-coast. They are listed in the Contest Calendar because, as a writer, you should know about them as well. Many of you are small publishers; some of you have books published by smaller presses. If you think your book may qualify for an award, a quick consultation with your publisher may mean the difference between it being entered or not. And I think it helps for you to know what kinds of awards there are for your goal-setting. But to bring the book back down to size, and keep it focused on its usefulness to writers the name of the award, the deadline, the genre and the contact information are the only information printed in the book; the full information is available here from the contacts given in the book.
If you think that you'd ever have time to write and still know where to find all this information, collect it, and organize it, let me know. There are 427 entries in the 2005 edition, some found very few other places yet. Some contest information is not available on the internet. Anyone who says they could compile all of this on their own, has never tried to do it.
There is an exciting diversity of opportunities for Canadian writers. And it's all in one place so you don't have to look for them.
