So So Seattle.......2007-04-03
Seattle is a great cosmopolitan city. The books in this series are usually excellent. This one is sub par, it doesn't do the city justice. It's o.k. if you want info concentrated on one city, but you'll gleen as many insights from the Chamber of Commerce visitor information.
I was disappointed in the book, not the city.
Top 10 is Tops!.......2007-03-24
We have been fans of all the Top 10 books...Washington DC, NYC, et al
It provides money-saving tips for budget-minded travelers of one, two or family with children(food, accomodations, etc). The book helps you be time-wise for sightseeing for one, two or family with children. Definitely recommend to all travelers. We look forward to our Seattle trip. Will be our first time in the great North West!
Quick consult........2005-09-15
If you need a quick answer for places to go and enjoy in Seattle, this book will be a good and low cost reference guide. Am planning to go to Seattle, will take it with me.
Useful info when you have limited time in Seattle.......2005-06-28
We took a few days off before attending a business meeting in the Seattle area. I wanted a short-and-sweet guidebook that would direct me to the places I most needed to see (expected destinations like Pike Place Market), as well as a few less obvious places to go. Since I couldn't spend very long in town, I wanted something small and portable enough to stuff in my purse. Top 10 Seattle did a good job at this goal.
In addition to the top ten overall spots, and in some cases the top ten at each spot (such as the most important places to see at the aforementioned market), the book covers each of the major neighborhoods, with recommendations in each one. Not all of them are "tourist" spots, either; for instance, it directs you to walk a few blocks off Broadway (where I was staying) to check out the architecture of area homes. That was good advice, and I wouldn't have ventured that way on my own.
Each neighborhood gets restaurant recommendations, too; we relied on it for one or two meals and were generally pleased. There's also shopping recommendations, though I didn't explore them as much.
The book also has very clear maps, which was definitely appreciated, though I'm not sure how helpful they'd be if you go outside their major areas of focus.
Where the book falls down is in the details. Not the info on each site (it's tiny, that's what I wanted) but in logistics. If it's 10am on Sunday, which of these places will be open? Should I go downtown on the off-chance that the museum is open? The book gave me no guidance.
Nonetheless, this was a good book to carry along on a short trip. I'd do it again.

more helpful than others.......2007-08-22
The author of this book relocated to Seattle himself, so he has the right type of info needed for those planning a move with no previous info on the city. He gives significant info on the neighborhoods and surrounding areas full with crime rates & community junctions. The problem with this handbook is that it is old (2000). I am certain things have changed in the last seven years. This would be an excellent guide if the author updated the info, other than that I think the info provided covers more than most.
Excellent guide for a Seattle neophyte!.......2001-09-28
Having decided recently to look into making the big move cross-country, I checked out this book and found it to be a much better than average moving guide. After reading it, I felt like I lived there - maybe not quite a native, but not a newbie either! The author is clearly very familiar with his city, and his stories contain just the right blend of humor and insight. All in all, I thought it was a very enjoyable read...and I just might move to Seattle!
One Stop Shopping.......2001-09-04
I tend to be a big list maker and have drawers and files crammed full of newspaper clippings and magazine articles. Considering a move to the Seattle area from the mid-Atlantic, I picked up Mr. Steele's "Relocating to Seattle" and found that I had hit the jackpot! Sort of like One Stop Shopping - I found all the information I could possibly need for anticipating and making the move westward. He even had advice and suggestions on topics I hadn't even thought about! Also, expecting - as with many travel books - rather dry text, I was thrilled to find that Mr. Steele's book was a truly enjoyable read! Lots of personal annecdotes and well-placed humor made it a book I will hang onto for years to come.

Not Quite Paradise - but Close!.......2001-08-23
This is one of the very finest "relocation" books that I have had the pleasure of perusing. My career consisted of forty years in the Navy (1948-1988) and twenty different living locations. If ONLY Guy Steele had been around during that period of time to provide advanced information about even just ONE of my living locations, it would have been a blessing.
Altho I have visited Seattle from time to time, Guy almost challenges me to try it out for a permanent residence. After reading his book, can I leave Honolulu and head for Seattle? No! But almost!

Fantastic book.......2007-07-05
This is one of the best books I have found for the newbie hiker in seattle. If you have a GPS it is even better as you can just the coordinates in the book to find the starting point for each hike. The Maps are great! The descriptions are great!
A good supplement .......2007-02-11
This well structured hiking book fills a gap in the suite of similar books that cover the Olympics and the Cascades in Western Washington. This volume does a good job identifying interesting hikes close to the metropolitan Puget Sound Basin--the title says it all. The book also adds features that many other hiking books lack, most notably good hike maps and hike profiles. You can do all the hikes in this book without supplemental maps.
An Essential Planner.......2006-08-02
First of all, I am Bryce Henderson Stevens, and I am not the author of this book. By a coincidence, we share the same first and last name, and I resided in Olympia, Washington, for many years, and have made some of the hikes detailed in the book I am reviewing. I now live in Clinton, Tennessee, but visit my Olympia home whenever I am able. I purchased copies of this book in part because the author and I share the same first and last name, and I invite my friends to examine it and discover the authors' pictures and realize that I am NOT the author. That being said, my recommecation is still based on having hiked many of these trails, and having several hiking guides in my personal library.
By another coincidence, my cousin, George Henderson, published "Lonely on the Mountain: a Skier's Memoir", this year, which is a recollection of his early years skiing and exploring Mount Hood. So, the hiking, climbing, and exploring interest is in my family, and may come with my own name. And in a third, curious coincidence, I have published my own memoir of having been camping just a few miles west of Mount St. Helens on 18 May 1980, when it erupted, which can be found in "Teaching Through Stories; Yours, Mine and Theirs", by Betty Roe, et alia. All of this not withstanding, I offer this review of the book, without prejudice in favor of the authors, neither of whom I am personally acquainted with:
Excellent directions and trail descriptions, including elevation maps keyed to the entire trail, let you know what to expect as you plan your hikes, and which trails may be too difficult for beginning hikers. Key information is provided in "at a glance" sections for each hike, and many of the featured hikes a have follow-up section on nearby activities of interest. This is the most informative trail guide in my library.
Great for hiking trails close to the city.......2006-07-26
This book has a bunch of really good hikes right near Seattle and the Eastside which is what sets it apart from others I have seen (although it also has some farther out in the mountains). There are a lot of great options if you don't feel like driving too far. Really good if you have kids, or if you want some hard and some easy hikes. The book says it has 40 hikes available year-round, which is great in the winter months. Definitely recommended.
useful and informative.......2006-07-25
Even if you already own a Seattle hiking guide, this book is worth purchasing. It includes many often-overlooked hikes and trail-runs that involve minimal driving time. Each hike has an informational box with pertinent facts e.g. distance, difficulty, terrain, so that browsing for what you want is remarkably easy. Unlike other local guidebooks, the maps include markers that correspond to salient features in the trail descriptions, making them infinitely more useful. The descriptions themselves are well written, precise, and include interesting historical facts. Plus, as the book is brand-new, the trail information is all up to date.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but in need of an update.......2005-02-22
This is the perfect guide for exploring the city on foot, although Seattle has changed since the book was written 5 years ago. The maps are clear, the directions precise, the information interesting, the organization flawless. There were no major problems even when places had changed (an Italian restaurant en route which was now Chinese...), but an update would be nice. Highly recommended.
walking seattle.......2000-10-11
If you're new to the city or even a longtimer who always wanted to explore the colorful districts of this town on the Sound, Walking Seattle by John Owen is your best guide by leaps and bounds. you won't just read about the sights and sounds of Seattle, but also its origins and beginnings, from the first day of commerce at the Pike Place Market. Most of the city's great walks are covered quite well--the Market, Ballard, the Arboretum, Alki, Diswcovery Park, the Locks. Fremont is the perfect foil for Owen's quirky brand of humor. All in all, Owen won't lead you off course

Generaly Field Guide.......2007-07-05
I recommend looking at this book in your local book store before purchasing it. It has some good information in it but it is not organized very well.
New Ways to enjoy Seattle.......2003-10-14
My husband and I have been visiting our children in Seattle for 12 years. How delighted we were to receive a copy of Nature in the City:Seattle, and to discover that nature is literally bursting out of every corner of the city. I can't wait to take our grandchildren to Discovery Park this November to listen for winter owls. Then maybe we'll have time to stroll around Dead Horse Canyon to look for medicinal plants while imagining smoky longhouses formerly along Lake Washington's shore. With this wonderfully composed and arranged book, Maria and Kathryn have given Seattle a new look.
A new book for my glove box...........2003-09-29
This book has lots of great ideas on how to spend an hour or four in and around the city. It's easy to read and has interesting info interspersed in with the specifics of each adventure. I now have new fun facts and things to look for on a walk I've taken many mornings on Queen Anne Hill, I learned about the Peregrin's that I've seen perch on my downtown office windowsill, and the bike ride along the Duamish was a nice alternative to some more common routes. I look forward to trying them all.
Thoughts From The East Coast.......2003-09-05
As a nature lover from Washington, DC and frequent visitor to
Seattle, I was fortunate to receive a gift of a book Nature in the City - Seattle by Maria Dolan and Kathryn True. With this
extraordinary guide in hand, I visited Kubota Garden and
Carkeek Park. The maps were particularly helpful to this visitor. I appreciate as well many beautiful photographs and
charming drawings. What an innovative and well-written guide...

Customer Reviews:
Woefully Inadequate.......2006-03-06
"Fodor's Seattle" lacks important information essential to a memorable Seattle area trip. For example, it does not even mention the Boeing plant tour and nearby aircraft displays, and while it does have information on some day trips (eg. Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Ranier, Olympic National Park), it lacks information on nearby Tacoma's impressive renovated railroad terminal and Chihuly glass displays. I'm left wondering what else is missing.
