Book Description
The Amalfi Coast is an unforgettable place for many travelers. A marvelous winding drive among the cliffs by the water's edge gives way to spectacular and romantic views that linger in one's memory. In this book, photographers have met the challenge of portraying the Amalfi Coast in ways that will surprise even the traveler with the keenest of visual recollections. Here they capture the coastline brilliantly through innovative perspectives while showing off its famous sites, remarkable for their vast natural, architectural, and artistic variety: Capri, Naples, Pompeii, and Sorrento. This is a place where the beauty of the landscape, molded by volcanoes, is wed to the glories of an illustrious past, and where the intense blue of the Tyrrhenian contrasts with the greenery and the bare rocks of the coast. Complemented by splendid photographs, the narrative in this book leads the reader on a wondrous itinerary through famous travel sites, where we happen upon hidden gems. Along with the great monuments, we discover, for example, the towns and villages of inland areas that, though off the beaten track, are rich in history, artistic treasures, stunning natural scenery, and the flavors and colors of ancient popular traditions. From coastlines to volcanoes, Roman ruins to cathedrals, and museums to festivals, these images form a stunning portrait of the Amalfi Coast-one that all who know this region will treasure.
Customer Reviews:
Not Quite Magical.......2005-12-13
This heavy volume of beautiful if somewhat over-colorized photos helps fill a void in books about the unspeakably beautiful Amalfi coast, and highlights some truly gorgeous works of art, but still fails to capture the magic of the area on a few points. First, the photography almost uniformly focuses on sunny, picture-perfect days - and thus fails to capture the coast's most amazing feature, the play of sunlight and shadow, mist and shade that constantly transforms each breathtaking vista. Second, the text is awkwardly written, or at least translated. The author is apparently a renowned journalist, so I will blame the translation and editing of the text, which is scattershot and often throws out terminology that assumes a knowledge of Italian or Latin. Third, there is almost no mention of Ravello, and only one small photo or two of the most magical place in the entire region!

Very comprehensive.......2007-01-29
ADVENTURE GUIDE TO NAPLES, SORRENTO, AMALFI COAST BY MARINA CARTER is another of Hunter Publishing Company's excellent travel guides. This one has a fascinating introduction which gives not only the history, but also breaks down and explains the art and architecture into specific periods of history, which gives you a thorough appreciation for what you will see and experience on your trip. There is a section of where to go, what to see, places to eat and shop, and sporting activities and entertainment in each area, including phone numbers and websites to contact for each. The book explores Naples with its history and art, then the 60 mile Sorrento Peninsula as a base for exploring other areas and famous for luring sirens to the treacherous rocks, and finally the less accessible Amalfi Coast with its gorgeous scenery one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. Reading this guide will tempt travelers to Italy to venture South of Rome.
An excellent travel planner, it can't be beat........2006-11-05
Naples and nearby coastal areas offer much in the way of different travel experiences, from fine resorts to street theatre and fishing villages - and Naples, Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast makes the most of the entire region, offering plenty of unforgettable adventures and covering not only walks and places to stay, but night life and historic sights. An excellent travel planner, it can't be beat.

Book Description
This stunning Mediterranean city of Naples is enjoying a newfound self-confidence. Recent years have seen a dramatic reclamation of its heritage, as piazzas that once functioned as car parks have been restored to their original glory in a renewal process that is almost complete. Naples today is once again recognizable as the place that drew the Grand Tourists with its unique combination of outstanding beauty and overtones of mythology. But the bustle, the street life, the numerous cafés, bars, and restaurants remain, and the Time Out Naples guide takes travelers to the best in eating, drinking, and hanging out that the city has to offer. Highlights include the best sailing and diving in the area, an in-depth survey of local food and wine, and a useful guide to the etiquette of Neapolitan shopping. The guide goes beyond the city to explore the best of the Amalfi coast, the town of Sorrento, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

This is the essential guide book to Naples!.......2005-08-02
This book features all up to date and hard to find information about the area which is one of the most alluring and interesting spots I have ever been. There is plenty of off the beaten track sites to visit as well as great restaurants and bed and breakfasts. It is listed in an easy manner. My only complaint is the cover is a bit
thin in the paper department, curling already when I have had it only a few weeks. But it is sooo worth having if you are planning a trip to Bella Napoli. capri and the Amalfi Coast. Buon Viaggio!

Book Description
Stretching along the Mediterranean Sea from Sorrento to Positano, the Amalfi coast is one of the most famous and hard-to-reach seaside destinations in Italy. Isolated from the mainland by the Lattari Mountain range, this unforgettable coast is accessible by land on one road along jagged cliffs that plunge 3,000 feet into the sea. Such inaccessibility has made the secluded towns along the Amalfi coast truly unique centers of Italian culture.
With this colorful book, photogarpher Rosario Bonavoglia takes you on an adventurous ride, through the winding passags and ravines above the seacoast, to ten different towns--including Positano and Ravello as well as lesser-known Vietri and Cetara. On this journey, Bonavoglia unveils the hidden treasures accessible only to natives of the area. His photographs capture breathtaking views of the seacoast, regional charm, and local architectural wonders, while renowned art historian Assunta Cuozzo recounts the history and the details tha make these towns so remarkable.
Customer Reviews:
wanted more.......2001-09-25
The pictures were beautiful but I guess I wanted something that was going to give me the same feelings I had when I first saw the Amalfi Coast, I wanted the book to take my breath away. I enjoyed the book but I wanted something with more landscape views of Positano and of the surrounding areas.
Gateway to our beautiful home, the Isle of Capri!!.......2000-08-29
There is nothing like the Amalfi coast. Hidden from most of the world, the only accessible route is one road that travels high in the jagged cliffs. Amalfi is unique unto itself. Much like Provence, France, only different. Both are special. My sister and I love flying over Amalfi, in fact, we are the only identical twins to ever do so. I have been flying for nearly 15 years, so don't worry, we're safe! Of course, if you do go to the Amalfi Coast, stay in Sorrento, and then come see our beautiful Isle of Capri. Almafi is gorgeous; Capri is magical, but not quite our Provence, which we always retreat to, because we are French. -------------------------Presented by Summer!
Breathtakingly Beautiful.......2000-03-22
In my opinion, Italy's Amalfi coast is one of the best kept travel secrets in the world. This gorgeous region rivals any in the world with its blue sky, crystalline water and beautiful backdrop of mountains. The region has its own unique character and charm, well captured in this book. Amalfi is someplace truly special, reserved only for those who appreciate beauty in its most full-blown form. If you're one of those who loves a treat, you simply can't go wrong with this book.
O.K-Not great.......2000-02-29
This book was not as good as the other review made it out to be. Some good pictures of towns and views of the sea, but far too many pictures of festivals and people for my taste. Picture quality is only good-not excellent.
A PICTORIAL MASTERPIECE.......1999-10-01
An amazing collection of the most remarkably beautiful spots in the region. A must-have. The best pictures I have seen on the Costiera Amalfitana.

The only problem with Robert Fisher's Escape to the Amalfi Coast is that it's addictive. Fisher is both a writer and a photographer, and his guide to the Italian coast bordering the Bay of Naples is rich in luscious photography and descriptive prose. Starting with the lure of Positano; exploring the sun-blessed coastal towns of Ravello, Sorrento, and Amalfi; and venturing as far as Naples and Capri, Fisher revels in the region's beauty--both natural and manufactured. He highlights the azure seascapes and scruffy mountain hikes, the palazzos where celebrities romp; the bougainvillea-bedecked nooks where lovers spoon; the grand restaurants serving truffles and foie gras; and the archetypal fishing villages, replete with whitewashed cottages, turquoise seas, and weathered dories. Thumb through those pictures, read about those villages, and your only focus becomes how soon you can go and how long you can stay. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Inspiration to travel to the Amalfi Coast.......2006-06-11
In the introduction the authors tell us that the purpose of the book is to be both luscious magazine article and guidebook. In my opinion they have done both. However, I have been to the Amalfi Coast more than once, and it is possible that I am swayed by my love of the place.
The photographs in this book are amazing. I love to take pictures of the Amalfi Coast myself. I think that the photographer does a magnificent job of capturing the beauty of the coast. In my opinion the Amalfi Coast of Italy is the most beautiful place on the planet. Once you have experienced it, you will want to return each year.
You cannot use this book as your only source of information to travel to the Amalfi Coast unless you have a large budget that you are working with. The hotels that are referenced in this book are lovely, but they also come with large price tags.
Overall I think this book is valuable as an inspiration to visit this magnificent place. For arranging lodging I would recommend a second book, or a travel agent to get the best bang for your buck. I found a lovely little hotel in Praiano named Onda Verde that is reasonably priced and is easy access to Ravello, Positano, Sorrento, and Pompeii. There is also a boat that leaves from the dock that goes directly to Capri. You can locate this hotel on the web, on send me an email and I will be happy to answer your questions from an American perspective.
Amalfi on your own.......2000-04-01
The photos are beautiful. This is not a typical Fodor's travel guide book. They forgot the "guide". If you want to sit and "uuuu" and "ahh" and want a coffee table book this is good. If you want a guide book...PASS...you'll do better on your own.
Escapes any real information.......2000-02-28
This is not the typical Fodor's guidebook one may have used for previous travel, but rather a compilation of beautiful photos coupled with minimal detailed information. If you are looking for wonderful snapshots of the region prior to travel - this book is for you. If you are looking for a book with even a bit of useful information, i.e. restaurants, hotels, "things to do", weather, shopping, etc. - pass and don't look back - you won't find it here.
Fantastic;a book to treasure and display for a life time........1999-08-10
Having traveled on the Amalfi Coast numerous times, being able to open the spectacular pages and relive the memories is something both my husband I will enjoy for years to come. More indepth tour books are available, but nothing can capture the beauty and romance that is in Robert Fisher's book. It will never be out of date and can be treasured for a lifetime.
A bunch of picture postcards with gushy writing........1999-07-15
Esentially this is a book of picture postcards with writing so gushy diabetics reading it should keep their insulin handy. The "practical" information is useful but the lodging recommendations sounds like they were written by the Amalfi Chamber of Commerce. If you've been to Amalfi and weren't happy with your photos, you might want this book. Otherwise, skip it.

Michelin, for those that want ONLY the best..........2000-06-27
The greatest annoyance with foreign travel is most often confusion and inefficiency.
If you could easily whisk from point A to point B, make decisions on what to do next with great ease, lodge and dine ONLY in those places that leave you with the feeling of having been somewhere and experienced something truly unique and delighful... your trip abroad would be simply delightful, nothing else.
I'm telling you, if you want to eliminate the fuss, the missed opportunities, and the wasted time, and the frustration, get yourself a Michelin guide to WHEREVER you are going... particularly those places with a penchant for confusion (read: Naples!)
The Michelin guide practically reads your mind... just flip the page and it tells you EXACTLY what you wanted to know... where best to go, how best to get there, what best to eat and where best to sleep.
Michelin guide is simply the best.
It's 100% efficient. It's 100% quality. And, most importantly, it makes one's vacation 100% success!
Highly recommended.
