5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-05-12

LOVE this book! My kids and I go thru it all the time and learn together. There are so many fasinating things!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource.......2007-02-12

For the coffee table or the bookshelf, I find myself grabbing this a couple time a week for various reasons, and the range of subjects is well chosen and reasonably thorough. Got one for mom, sis, and daughter.

1 out of 5 stars A silly book.......2007-01-27

The hype for this book is ridiculous. It is nothing more than a random compilation of rather vaccuous conventional wisdon in over-simplified text, useful maybe for a not-too-bright early teenager, but useless for any reasonable sophisticated Amazon subscriber type person. It is not even fun to browse, its advice is often totally off-base, and its editorial decisions in deciding what to include are unfathomable.

Physically. a "door-stop" size book in a screaming yellow dust jacket, it deserves neither the large space or prominent display it is yelling for; the Times should be ashamed of itself.

5 out of 5 stars Make friends, influence people, fix your life..........2007-01-20

The NY Times Practical Guide is indeed an essential guide to practically everything. Facinating, a must coffee table book--keeping yourself and guests intrigued, may be even a game based on this book. Entertains stray vistors, neglected guests, and necessary absences of the host/hostess (you) superbly. Excellent source of expanding your range of topical conversational skills. And, egads, it is chock-a-block full of information with accompanying diagrams and directions you can use! Well received by the guys on my Christmas list. It is a gender neutral book, so next year, it will be for the ladies.

5 out of 5 stars What You Need to Know About Everything.......2007-01-15

I don't know just how many entries there are in this book, but the index alone runs for 21 pages, five columns wide, tiny type. You wouldn't think that a book like this would be needed in the day of Google and Yahoo reacy to supply you with tons of information in a few seconds.

But with those tons of information, which one do you trust? Which ones are simply ads trying to get you to buy something? This book is put out by the New York Times. If you can't trust them, who can you trust. And it's organized in a more or less straight forward way to make it easy for you to find what you are looking for. It's broken down into several major categories, as follows:

Health and Fitness
Food and Drink
Money
Spending and Saving
Education
Careers
House and Garden
Travel
Sports and Games
Arts and Entertainment
Everyday Science
Law and Mores

Under these broad subjects are a hundred or so smaller categories with dozens of entries under that. I'd list some of the entries, but it's easier just to say that almost everything you could possibly think of is almost certainly to be included from fly fishing to pricy vacation, from antique furniture styles to fishing lures, from investing in Wall Street to investing in wine.

Exellent. I've bought several books in this genre, but "The Dog Lover's Companion to New York City: The Inside Scoop on Where to Take Your Dog (Dog Lover's Companion to New York City)" is the only one that's easy to read, addresses exactly what you're looking for (the best time for you and your dog) and then get you jazzed to try the exciting destinations listed.

3 out of 5 stars Nice asset for dog lovers; however, definitely double check sites.......2006-08-14

Living in an area where there aren't many dog friendly places, yet within commuting distance of NYC, I thought this would be a good book to add to my collection. It has valuable resources like maps and contact numbers for the places they list. There are a variety of places you can go to with your pet.

The reason I gave this book a 3 instead of a 5 is it lists Eisenhower Park as allowing dogs on leash. I have lived near this park for most of my life. To my knowledge they had never allowed dogs. I called to see if they changed their policy - so happy that a nearby place would allow me to bring my pet. Sadly, they confirmed never in their history have they allowed dogs within the park and you can receive a big ticket if you do.

When I contacted the books publisher, I was told that was why the caveat of checking first is in the book. The caveat is nice, but I was still frustrated they listed this source when it was never an option.

I have not had a chance to check on the other sites listed yet.

So in summary, good for dog lovers living near or visiting New York City, but do your homework before you bring your pet.

Book Description

The Finger Lakes area of upstate New York is America's largest wine region outside of California. The steep, rocky hillsides rising up from deep, glacier-sculpted lakes provide protection from weather extremes, allowing area wineries to produce up to 85 million bottles of wine each year. In GREETINGS FROM THE FINGER LAKES, local restaurateur Michael Turback profiles the best wineries, restaurants, farms, and markets surrounding the five largest lakes, and includes interviews with the proprietors, tasting notes, and even a few treasured local recipes. Featuring contact information for each location as well as photographs of the region's picturesque landscapes, GREETINGS FROM THE FINGER LAKES is the food and wine lover's companion to this up-and-coming culinary hot spot.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Travel guide lite.......2006-03-24

I live in the Central New York region just east of the Finger Lakes. I work with people who live in the region and I road trip quite a bit in the area when the weather warms up, so I have a "mile-wide and an inch deep" knowledge of the area.

I consider this book a "lite" travel guide because it doesn't cover much of what's in the area, but it covers what it does in great depth. It focuses on what the cover says, and nothing more. It doesn't cover many eateries outside of the population centers, and skips a lot of the "hole in the wall" restaurants, diners, and stands that offer great food but are a bit off the beaten path.

If you want to focus on wineries and want some in depth knowledge about thoose wineries this is the book. Beyond that you will need to look elsewhere for information.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and up to date.......2005-10-01

This book was very useful to have on vacation -- his restaurant reviews were a big help in terms of types of cuisine available and the winery reviews were very specific about what types of wines they produce and what he liked when he went tasting. It was also nice to know how formal restaurants were before you went.

    Book Description

Many consider the Yankees to be the gold standard of baseball franchises. Here is the book to accompany that legacy: The Ultimate Yankees Companion, a new encyclopedia with all the Yankees information every fan will want to have.

This book has more stats than any Yankee diehard could ever hope for. From batting registers to pitching registers, from fielding stats to baserunning stats, and year-by-year and career stats for every pinstriped player are provided. Each manager, general manager, and even owner has a listing of how the Bronx Bombers did under their guidance. Relive where the Yankees ended up in each year’s pennant race (often at the top), read about the twenty-five greatest games in Yankees history, and see a year-by-year history of the team’s broadcasters.

The Ultimate Yankees Companion is more than just stats, though, providing new insights on some of the greatest players and best seasons in the team’s history. Each Yankee postseason appearance (and there are lots of them!) has its own special section too, with box scores, series evaluations, and postseason statistics. The Yankees have more than their fair share of Hall of Famers, all-stars, and post season award-winners, and each is highlighted and honored.

Even player development gets a close look, with an evaluation of draft picks and free-agent signings, as well as a history of the famous and trend-setting Yankee farm system. If it happened to, for, or with the Bombers, then the Companion has it covered.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars not as useful as I hoped.......2007-06-26

I was expecting more. I was hoping for more places to stay overnight with a large dog. I have a golden retriever and wanted to include him in more of our activities, but this listed stuff that was out of our way or less quality than places I already know. Some new places to try, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this book. It is a nice idea, but nothing new.

1 out of 5 stars Some real problems with this vlume.......2007-01-19

Reading these positive reviews I almost hesitated to post a rather negative review; however, I feel it important to point out some problems with this particular volume.

My work keeps me on the road for much of the year and my dog often accompanies me on these trips. Locating dog friendly properties is sometimes a challenge so I was pleased when a friend gave me this book as a gift. Unfortunately, I found the book rife with errors, misinformation and glaring omissions. As the authors correctly point out, it is vital to verify the rules for an individual property prior to leaving home in order to avoid disappointment and inconvenience. Properties change hands; situations alter and rules change without warning. While reading through the book I kept returning to verify the publication date since so many entries were very out of date. This particular issue was published in 2004. In a number of places throughout the book recommendations for lodging and food include properties that closed as much as seven or eight years prior to the publication date. In New England there are several Inns that cater to dog owners offering special programs and amenities for dog owners and their pets. The properties that I am aware of have all been in operation for at least eight to ten years. Yet no mention is made of them. Odd.

I think the bottom line of this book and on any similar books is that the dog owner who chooses to travel with his/her pet, must do their own research prior to hitting the road and must verify all information listed on any web site or in any book. Perhaps it is simply impossible to write a book such as this and hope that any of the information will remain current upon publication.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any dog owner in New England!.......2003-01-07

As a resident of Connecticut, I found it a daunting task to find places where my dog was accepted. This book took all the guess work out of who allows them and makes life a LOT easier! I was also surprised to find a few eateries in my own town which allow patio eating with my furry friend, which is a welcome surprise. Definitely, any dog owner who lives in New England or is planning on a visit here needs this book. It is much more extensive than most other dog travel guides, including a ranking system and descriptions of all places included, as well as some cute anecdotes of the authors' own experiences with their pooches at these places.

5 out of 5 stars you will never want to leave them home again!.......2002-08-06

Like most people we love new england and especially the berkshires (lenox, stockbridge, ect)or a gettaway up to maine. I was always jealous of people that I meet with their dogs, and always yearn to go on vacation with our pets instead of worrying how they are doing at home with a petsitter or in a kennel somewhere. now, thanks to this book I never realized how many hotels and b&b's allowed pets! this book makes travels with your fido so much easier and they wont just be sitting in the hotel room bored, either. There are so many places for them to go to that are mentioned in this guide book, they can enjoy themselves as well. (after all, they are on vacation too, right)?
My dogs and I thank would like to thank the authors of this book from the bottom of our hearts! thank you, thank you!!cant wait to buy your new edition about New York!

      4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2002-07-30

I found this book exceptionally helpful for planning our vacation with our dogs. The places listed are great for taking your dog, and the book contains a variety of subjects: places to stay, places to eat, places to go have fun (hiking, beaches, etc.), and also lists events that are happening in the area. The only problem I had was that some prices have changed, and that there was some inside information omitted; for example, the beaches in Gloucester are leash free after the life-guards have left, even though the signs at the beach say "no dogs allowed." We missed out on some serious beach time because we didn't know that tidbit until the end of our visit. Just make sure you follow up (they include phone numbers for every spot listed) if you're counting on price or hours or something.

Here he takes readers with him on a series of walks through the heart of Manhattan and beyond, explaining how it came to be the world's most fabulous city, as well as revealing its present-day secrets. When the original edition of this incomparable guide was published in 1983, it won the Thomas Cook award as the guide book of the year. After he revised it in 1991 it was chosen by New York Magazine as the best of nearly a hundred books about the city. Now he has been back to retrace his steps. Thoroughly updated, this book is packed with inspiration, revelation, and sound practical advice. MICHAEL LEAPMAN lived in New York for seven years, as correspondent for The Times, reporting perceptively on the city's delights and foibles. He continues to visit New York regularly and to write about it for magazines and other newspapers.

5 out of 5 stars If you love history and walks and the stories behind things.......2005-06-19

This is the perfect guide book for people who want to see the city in depth. A friend of mine told me I have the place gene, and THE COMPANION GUIDE books fill that need better than any other guide books. What are some of the most stunning office building interiors in NYC? Where is Peter Stuyvestant buried? Why is NYC the best possible place for the U.N., the headquarters of the world?
It is so well written that you can read it for the sheer pleasure of the prose, but each chapter is organized as a walk, and I am chomping at the bit to head out on them all. Great book!
