Book Description

Many people obstruct their innate potential through repeated patterns of emotional struggle and suffering. This practical, hands-on guide explains why and how people habitually fall into this trap and provides a program, easily incorporated into everyday life, that frees them from this destructive behavior. Using a simple mandala, the book illustrates the four places humans go when they feel threatened, uncomfortable, or aren’t fully centered or grounded in the present moment. Like a trail of pebbles left behind on a hike, it helps trace the path back to the authentic self. Drawing on his three decades of teaching consciousness, Richard Moss plays the role of wise shepherd, accompanying and encouraging the reader on a journey toward the genius within and away from fear and other limitations. Most importantly, he offers an always-available compass that directs readers back to the true self, and into the magic of the present moment.

5 out of 5 stars Are you awake?.......2007-10-09

Dr. Moss brings awareness to all of us. In these chaotic times, I respect him greatly for speaking to the "fear factor" that has been created in our culture. He gives structure to consciously choose to become more "awake" in our own life. If we want a better world, we can not live in fear. I challenge readers to become informed.

5 out of 5 stars Conscious living and innertransformation.......2007-09-12

If you are interested in living more completely in the now then this book is for you. Richard Moss,MD shows us why and how we habitually obstruct our innate potential for what Richard calls radical aliveness as said by Deepak Chopra.

If you want to take a close look at yourself then this book is for you. How simple and direct Dr. Moss is.

5 out of 5 stars The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness.......2007-07-19

Spend just a single day being completely aware of where your thoughts lead you. How often does your mind wander? How much time do you find yourself recalling or analyzing things that happened in your past? How much time do you spend worrying about what might happen in the future? What stories do you make up about yourself in your wanderings? Are you self-sacrificing, underappreciated, and undervalued? Are you hardworking and eagerly climbing the ladder of success? Are you bitter that everyone else seems to catch a break but you get nothing?

Anyone who has ever tried this exercise knows that the majority of our time is spent anywhere but at the present moment. We fixate on the past, we fantasize about the future, we create self serving stories in our minds, and we judge others. Very little of our time is actually fully focused on what we are doing and feeling in this exact moment. So in essense, we rarely focus on the here and now, on the moment.

The Mandala of Being guides the reader to a better understanding of this very human process explaining that these seemingly harmless distractions actually color the way we see ourselves. Basically, all of these stories do two things. They either feed our ego so that we feel that we are somebody special (hiding the underlying feeling that we are not enough as we are) or we opening berate ourselves. The end result in both cases is the same, it reinforces the notion that somehow we have to be, act, or have something specific in order to be valuable human beings.

The simple solution is to have our thoughts stay in the here and now, to see events for what they really are, and to get in touch with our true selves. This may be easy to say but it is extremely hard to do. The Mandala of Being teaches us how to make a start in this attempt and how to counteract some of the major obstacles on this path.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recomended.......2007-07-17

I have given away 5 copies and just ordered more. Regardless of one's spiritual path this book provides the basic tools to confidently proceed on. I continue to reread this book and get more out of it each time.

5 out of 5 stars landmark work!.......2007-07-01

So glad to see that all of the reviews here, so far, are positive. I own the book as well and can't recommend it enough to anyone who is serious about being on a spiritual path.

5 out of 5 stars Chalked Full...................2007-09-26

As a Druid High Priestess whom runs a large circle and runs PsychicSpellCaster.com, I can honestly tell you that this is full of very real information. Information that explains how the metaphysical is not really a mystical 'secret'- it is all explainable and can be used in a persons life to create a better life. The book can be heavy at times, but the format it is printed in really makes reading it easier (nice graphics, seperate paragraphs for covered subjects).
Over the years, many clients and students of mine have approached me with an array of metaphysical questions that can be explained by Quantum Physics (which is the underlined thread in this book). Therefore in my professional opinion, this is a must read.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading. Realistically this is a self-help book with no scientific connection........2007-08-11

This book/movie is good in that it at least briefly skimmed principles of quantum mechanics and probably provokes some optimistic thought in its readers. Unfortunately, they dragged the most precisely proven scientific theory out onto the self-help floor. I honestly don't see the connection between Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and learning to better control your life with your mind. Taken word for word these two things might mesh together, but really, this book/movie strips all science from quantum theory, turning it into a two hour message to learn how to think with your mind.

This book has no place citing quantum mechanics or anything remotely scientific. It might be useful if you want to stare at the ceiling and try to figure out how to guide your life with what you have behind your eyes. Go read something on philosophy if you want to discover something about thought that isn't purely scientific.

3 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, though not much new.......2007-07-31

I loved the film, despite having already researched most of the information in it. The movie had an awesome way of presenting the information and putting it into a visual form, so i was looking forward to the book.

I was immediately impressed with its looks and high quality finish. Reading it though was a little dull. I am perhaps overly critical as the information was hardly new, however for those new to the quantum physics world this is a great starter. I was hoping for some new insights that the film missed, but no such luck.

I love having it on my shelf, and it was worth reading, but the film was far better. Buy this with little expectation and you will be happy with your buy.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-06-27

The chapter on the links between biochemistry and emotion makes the book worth buying. Knowing what is happening inside your body is the first step to controlling it.

I am not convinced that quantum physics is the reason that people can communicate beyond the ordinary five senses. None the less, I have refered back to the book several times and I do recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars The Movie was Flawed... the Book is Flawed........2007-06-19

The physics in this book is stretched into philosophies that can't possibly be derived from the data. The movie was just as flawed, only more confusing due to its pace and the little Flubber guy.

Book Description

Writing in a series of short contemplations, Gangaji describes our never-ending search as human beings to find fulfillment that already exists if we stop long enough to experience it. She teaches us to let go of our need for control, to cultivate vulnerability, and how it unearth the roots of our suffering.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very articulate, cuts to the chase.......2007-09-25

I would never be naive enough to think one "Way" or one author has all of the answers we seek in life as humans. One needs to explore the mystery to find the truth on their own terms. Be skeptical as all hell. Don't believe anyone unless it feels genuine. For instance, Wayne Dyer seems phony to me, but beloved my millions. I don't like to critique his teachings because I'm sure he's helped many people. I personally like Buddhist and Toltec teachings. Thick Nhat Hahn isn't flying around in personal jets. I don't know much about Gangjani, and have read a little about her extravagant lifestyle. But I found the Diamond in Your Pocket keenly articulate. Maybe you can critique the author, but the message resonates magically.

1 out of 5 stars Tired Regurgitation from the Spiritually Bankrupt.......2007-09-09

This book gets one star for the long hours that the misguided devotee spent writing it and then attaching Gangaji's name to it. The content is a rehash of every other book that she purported to write. Much of the text is plagiarized from Vedic philosophy and twists the teachings of Ramana Maharshi to support a watered down version of that which is most Sacred. This is very appealing to western culture. Stop the search, don't follow thoughts, and you will find instant enlightenment. None of the great sages over the centuries from which she claims to quote have endorsed a quick and easy path to self-realization. This book falls woefully short of providing any substantive guidance to Self.

Even the title, "Diamond in Your Pocket", misses the mark in trying to describe the most imperative issues around your soul being incarnate and reduces it to something valuable in your pocket. It smacks of materialism. Is she trying to talk about actually being self aware?!! The rest of the book contains short platitudes that suggests that there is no effort required to reach self-realization and no need to devote one's life to understanding the most crucial questions.

Bless all those who still can't see through the hypnotic trance that is needed to accept this kind of drivel. And may they begin to see that they are supporting the extravagant lifestyle of snake oil saleswoman.

For those truly searching, I suggest any books by Pema Chodren or Thich Nhat Hanh. I would also suggest actually reading Bhagavad-Gita or the Diamond Sutra instead of taking the words of this so called teacher at face value.

5 out of 5 stars If stranded in an Island.......2007-07-30

The most powerfull and clear book in life, beautifully words. May You find yourself by not trying ....

3 out of 5 stars Great message, but weak delivery.......2007-07-28

I give this book 3 stars not because it was bad, but because I was dissappointed I could not take anything from it. The message of silencing thoughts to discover ones true self has been around for years, and explained better, and even delivered more poetically with more tranformative power, from countless other authors. I have no problem with repeating a message, but at least add a new perspective or something useful to it.
Since many people seem to really value this book, judging by the reviews, I will list a couple of my favourites here. If you enjoyed Gangaji's message, please look into these other authors for further perspective. Also, if you are familiar with these other authors, and think my assessment is wrong, it will be an easier decision to disregard my reveiw : )
For a completely non-affiliated and challenging take on this message, I love the Osho books. Those of you that are offended by his comments on established religion, or think that he is a kook for his lifestyle, and therefore disregard what he has to say, would most likely disagree with any of my assessments as well. Look him up on Youtube.com. If you like that, buy his "Autobiography of a spiritually incorrect mystic", and take it from there.
For a more spiritual take, I think that Nisargadatta Maharaj and Paramahansa Yogananda have some excellent views as well.
The only thing I would warn against is getting too involved with any of the groups that "carry on the legacy" of any of these authors, or any other that seem too eager to sell and/or bring you into your group. I think that they are somewhat missing the point. At least don't jump into anything, you can go plenty far on your own.
All in all, not a bad book for an introduction to an uplifting perspective, but will disappoint if you have heard similar stories before, nothing new here. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars "She had to learn it for herself." - The Good Witch Glinda, from The Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-30

I love this book. I'm treating it as sacred and only read it when I'm in my deepest moods. I love how the material does not pander to religious thought. I love how it corresponds to similar things I've read by Osho. I'm just coming through a long-term illness, regaining feeling on the left side of my head and body. So my challenge is to keep myself centered and grounded in moment-to-moment life again. Sometimes that means stopping and resting.

Prior to this period I was too busy being "psychic", feeling other people's feelings for them. Eventually my body quit feeling and became like rock. Once you are down, it is very easy for others to keep you there and break you. Cyclone-emotions like jealousy, possessiveness and anger are often directed at someone who smiles and speaks from the spirit. I allowed these things to chase me down like some kind of Wicked Witch. I almost died. I don't celebrate that Yellow Brick Road. When does the journey stop? Since I'm affected neurologically, I must accept my condition and learn how to STOP and just BE. According to Gangaji! What I celebrate is that my soul carried me through a forest of doctors, meds, public ignorance, officials who wouldn't believe or assist me, the betrayal of false friends, the loss of my beloved pet, etc! I lived through it. It's taken 7 years and now I'm 47. Now what?

Now is the time to truly see how polarized people are, and give myself permission to just BE in my Ruby Slippers. (Yes, I'm still writing about Gangaji's book!) ; ) There is no need to look for platforms or Wizards or fancy balloons where I could display myself and my "wisdom". Nor do I need anyone to insure my way Home. It's such a relief! I always knew those efforts were over-reaching and fake. I get to drop the habits, the compulsion to control and fix things and people (the way I was coached to do on my job). I'm turning myself over to MY OWN TRUTH. Wow! I'm coming Home.

Gangaji gives an eloquent explanation on how to get here, and be in the truth; how to see there are relative (polarized) truths, vs the eternal truth. This is huge! Psychic people usually get caught up in other's dramas, esp sexual dramas, at the expense of having lives of their own. Those truths pale in comparison to what is timeless and valuable - one's personal peace, well-being and good health. These qualities are not just confined to a body. So, this is a wonderful book to share with others who are limited by their bodies. We are spirit, and as a species, it is unnatural and perverse for us to be divided. When does the drama stop and the unity begin? This book puts forth the teachings, showing us that what we really want is to SHINE. So it is time to wake up, Dorothy! Because this IS a real place, and this IS the rainbow we are all looking to get over!

I'm only 1/3 of the way into this book, and feel vastly empowered. I LOVE being able to command a new world for myself. Silly dreamer that I am, I thought I lost all hope until now. But I feel hope for myself, and for the world and my place here. I can allow it to become divine. I'm just here, hanging out on top of the Rainbow with my special diamond. But perhaps you need someone to tell you? This is a real place, and we all have the ability to share it. And don't we all yearn for this? It's only just emerging as a new feeling of freedom I never quite appreciated when I was young (and dumb). The diamond we all carry is the freedom we hide deep down, which wants so much to come out and just shine, and to touch all things and all beings. It doesn't have the fanfare of what we know; it's strange, and beautiful, and feels real. It has presence. It is powerful. It belongs to no one, and everyone; because it's about the freedom of belonging. Like the Good Witch Glinda, Gangaji has a way of putting human character defects and pain into perspective. She knows we all yearn for Home, we just have to be willing to learn it for ourselves. She absolutely knows we can make it happen! Don't you find that exciting? Thank You, Gangaji! I love it!

Book Description

The nursery rhyme begins, "In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Less well-known is the line that follows: "…to learn if the old maps were true." How can there be "old maps" of a land no one knew existed? Were others here before Columbus? What were their reasons for coming and what unexplained artifacts did they leave behind?

The oceans were highways to America rather than barriers, and when discoverers put ashore, they were greeted by unusual inhabitants. In Discovering the Mysteries of Ancient America, the author of The Atlantis Encyclopedia turns his sextant towards this hemisphere. Here is a collection of the most controversial articles selected from seventy issues of the infamous Ancient American magazine. They range from the discovery of Roman relics in Arizona and California's Chinese treasure, to Viking rune-stones in Minnesota and Oklahoma and the mysterious religions of ancient Americans. Many questions will be raised including:

What role did extraterrestrials have in the lives of ancient civilizations?

What ancient pyramids and towers tell us about the people who built them?

Are they some sort of portals to another dimension?

What prehistoric technologies have been discovered, and what can they tell us about early settlers, their religious beliefs, and possible other-worldly visitors?

Did El Dorado exist, and what of the legendary Fountain of Youth?

Was Atlantis in Cuba?

What are America's lost races and what happened to them?

Discovering the Mysteries of Ancient America brings to the fore the once-hidden true past of America's earliest civilizations

Frank Joseph is the author of The Atlantis Encyclopedia (New Page Books), as well as a dozen other books on history, prehistory, and metaphysics. He has been the editor-in-chief of Ancient American magazine since its first issue in 1993. He lives in Wisconsin.

Wayne May is the founder-publisher of Ancient American. Laura Lee is the award-winning producer and host of the nationally syndicated "The Laura Lee Show". David Hatcher Childress wrote the best-selling Lost Cities series. Zecharia Sitchin is the author of the best-selling Earth Chronicles series. Andrew Collins is world-renowned for his consistent bestsellers, including Gateway to Atlantis.

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculous conspiracy theories based on facts.......2007-04-29

This book is a compilation of articles that take facts and add conjecture or speculation to arrive at a possible thesis.
The articles in this book are generally based on large leaps of faith which have little or no basis.
The editor, Frank Joseph, is from a historical conspiracy theory type magazine called Ancient American.
The book is a collection of articles from the magazine, printed in book form for a quick buck.
If you looked for this book in your local bookstore, you would most likely find it in the "new age" or "alternative history" section.
It is not possible to read this book as non-fiction because some of it is based on guesswork or patchwork history.
If fact and fiction are mixed, you have fiction, no matter how much fact is involved.
Unless you are a conspiracy theorist or you are looking for a book full of magazine articles of historical fiction, you can probably skip this one.
Some of the stories are interesting, but all are portrayted as journalism when they would more accurately be described as historical fiction.

Finally, people aren't ignoring the evidence of pre-Columbus voyages to America. This change in thinking has been a long time coming. This book presents some of the most compelling evidences for the voyages and visits. Even skeptics will have a hard time putting this book down. 2 out of 5 stars Be Realistic In Your Analysis..........2006-05-24

Childress' book cites numerous known abberations to the common perception that most relics and antiquities found in North America are of "native" cultural origin, and having these bits all in one place in one book is useful and entertaining. However, the speculation on aliens, portals, and Atlantis-type culture is, as always, tedious. Anyone can speculate and it is a writer's choice on how he or she chooses to speculate. The reader ,however, must be realistic in their analysis and truth behind the writer's speculation. If it is for entertainment purposes, the book and its speculations are wothwhile; if it is for actual information, the book is worth the price to read about the additional relics that have been found in North America that can really question our prevalent interpretations of North American history - however, the speculation on aliens and such is just that...entertainment value only. Early Mankind was a lot more innovative and flexible than people like Childress give them credit for - no use of aliens and portals is necessary to explain the historical evidence that is apparent in the antiquities record.

Book Description

Dear Reader,

I am honored that you have picked up The True Power of Water. In a world of no mistakes, it is not by coincidence that you and I are embarking on this journey. The words and pictures you are about to see will open a new world of possibilities for you -- just as my research has done for me.

In this book you will learn of the unique properties of water and its ability to improve your health and your life. You will see the effect each of us has on water -- not only the water we drink but also the water that makes up 70 percent of the human body and, most importantly, what happens to that water as we interact with each other.

2005 marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade of Water. It is our individual responsibility to learn all we can about water, the most precious resource on our planet, and to help shift the consciousness through our thoughts, through our words and prayers, and through our commitment to respect each other with love and gratitude. May our understanding of water help bring peace to all humankind.

5 out of 5 stars OPEN YOUR MIND AND HEART TO WATER!.......2007-04-11

What a wonderful learning experience this book was for me! Dr. Emoto has opened my mind and heart to look at water in a whole new Light! The pictures of the water crystals are incredible. Since reading this book, I do not, nor will I ever, let a day go by that I do not say THANK YOU to the water I drink and the water I shower with! From the time I was a little girl, (many MANY years ago) I always felt that water was special - that there was nothing more healing for me than sitting by a body of water - but it wasn't until reading Dr. Emoto's book that I got the confirmation I needed!! Not only do I thank you, but I hope people will buy your books and thank you AND WATER - as well!

5 out of 5 stars True Power of Water = True Power of Healing.......2007-04-10

I think it's a great book. I've studied Dr. Emoto's work in grad. school and I'm happy to have his book at home now. It's a tool that I use in everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars amazing !!!.......2007-02-19

I have heard about the book from one of my firends. She has bought the same in Turkish edition. The same day I ordered this book together with Hidden Messages in the water of Emoto. In a week 3 items I ordered reached me.

I am living in Istanbul,Turkiye. I started to read the book upon receipt.
Really amazing. While reading I was talking to the water with several nice words and then drinking. I still did not try to write some sentences
to stick on the bottle and drink. However, I believe strongly it works.
I know that some of old people here in Turkey write something on a paper and put into the water, or pray to water and let the people drink that water who suffered badly by spiritual reasons. And it works always.
I read the similar in this book and I can confirm the "hado".
Thanks Mr. Emoto to share the power of the water with us in a simply way that everyone can understand easily and to prove we are all water !!
I wish Mr. Emoto visits us in Turkey to tell and show more about it.

5 out of 5 stars The True Power of Water: Healing and Discovering Ourselves.......2006-11-11

The information in this book is so fundamental to our existance that I think it should be required reading in our schools. If everyone on the planet stopped using words that create "ughly crystals" of water -- we would have no more war -- and proablby no more illness.

Deepak Chopra, M.D., has emerged as one of the most powerful leaders in the revolutionary field of mind/body medicine. His extraordinary bestseller Quantum Healing explored the mind's connection to seemingly miraculous cures for cancer and other serious illnesses. Now, in Unconditional Life, he undertakes an even greater challenge: to explain how consciousness can lead the way to total freedom and perfect health. Unconditional Life brings together disciplines ranging from modern physics and neuroscience to the ancient traditions of Indian wisdom to show how our perceptions create our reality for good or ill--and how the outside world can be shaped by altering the world within. In a book filled with hope and inspiration, Dr. Chopra offers compelling proof of the power of consciousness and a daring new vision of our own unlimited potential.

at a moment in my life when things seemed unsurmountable this book pulled me through.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative........1999-01-05

I recommend it highly to everyone...especially the seekers of truth and the people on the early path to spirituality.

4 out of 5 stars Something very different.......1998-07-17

This book was very interesting. It challenges you to think outside the box of conventional "wisdom". Once you allow for the possibility that what we as a civilization are programmed to believe is not beyond reproah, there is some powerful and empowering concepts. Chopra writes in a cerebral way; therefore you have to be in the right mind set to enjoy this. If you aren't it is easy to lose him in some chapters.

Book Description

The Edgar Cayce story is one of the most compelling in inspirational literature.  Over the course of forty years the Sleeping Prophet time and again closed his eyes, entered an altered state of consciousness, and spoke to the very heat and spirit of mankind on subjects such as health, healing, dreams, meditation, sexuality, and reincarnation.  His more than 14,000 readings are preserved at the Association for Research and Enlightenment.  And now, with the guidance of Edgar Cayce, we can learn how to mine our psychic strengths for happier and healthier lives. Here are the readings of The Sleeping Prophet, condensed and simplified--the wisdom to help us make the right decisions affecting all facets of our lives.  Cayce speaks out on:  The sources of psychic development, reincarnation, Karma and grace, dreams, meditation, prayer, personal health (including diet and exercises,) holistic healing, sexuality, spirituality, rejuvenation, religion, spiritual psychology, and much more.   Cayce offers us the keys to insight, enlightenment, and total fulfillment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply astounding.......2007-01-24

While Edgar Cayce may indeed be "the sleeping prophet," Herbert Puryear is some type of angel himself in how he interprets Cayce's work. This book is so far beyond anything I've read in the spiritual/New Age realm that it needs to take its place in the pantheon of all-time great non-fiction works.

As others have noted, Puryear's tone is almost scientific, but don't fear boredom or confusion by my using that word. Each sentence is so loaded with such profound truths and wisdoms that very often, I could only read a few paragraphs before having to put it down in order to reflect on what I'd just read. Puryear is a genius, pure and simple, and it's his generosity of heart and spirit that gives the work a poignancy one finds in any great work of art. Believe me, it's that good.

This will have a permanent home on my bookshelf, and I'm sure that as I read it again and again, I'll discover buried truths I didn't see (or wasn't ready for) the first time around.

Seriously, I can't believe someone is out there who can write this well. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey of Self-Transformation.......2006-09-13

Having only ever heard the name edgar cayce, and not knowing, what person it belonged to, I was intrigued to find out with this mystical name was all about.

I was led on a journey I did not expect to take. It helped open my eyes to the interconnectedness of everything.

One major thing I liked about this book, is it's not written in a way that sounds like hokey spiritual, better your life crud....IT's written in a way that is almost scientific. The constant relation to the concious, subconcious, and the superconcious, allow you to contstruct relationships in your mind about everything this book goes into.

Well written, easy to read, and a great start at understanding the metaphysical...I highly recommend for anyone who has even the slightest interest in the metaphysical or spiritual realm, but has no idea where to start. This will give you the background KNOWLEDGE-not experiance-to continue discovering all there is out there.

5 out of 5 stars ONENESS.......2004-03-18

I've read many self-help books. One of my favorites was "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Steven Covey, which was great! But, "The Edgar Cayce Primer" takes the cake! Many self transformation books talk about how to deal with life situations on the physical plain, but very few books go back to the Source or the Root of all creation. This book is very repetitve on the subjects of "Oneness" and the first two most important Commandments, which I think, is a good thing because this book stresses these points showing the reader that this is the only way to self-fulfillment, coming out of living in darkness, loving yourself, spiritual strength. I could go on forever about how this book is changining and continually changes my life.

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2003-07-26

Edgar Cayce lovers this is the book which explains alot of what Edgar wanted us to learn. Clear and concise a beautiful little book, worth its weight in metaphysical gold!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-10-14

This is an excellent book. For those interested in Edgar Cayce and for those interested in Universal MInd, God , Spirituality...etc..A Very good starting place...and a Easy read.. One of my favorite books as well...

Book Description

Matt Kramer, longtime Wine Spectator columnist and author of the classic Making Sense series of wine books, now turns his palate toward Italy. Though Italian wine is the most popular wine among consumers, it remains puzzling to most wine lovers who wouldn't know a Barolo from a Barbaresco. Though shrouded in mystery, Italian wine has some of the most exciting and affordable varieties being produced today. Kramer is a trusted companion in the wine store, telling his readers the essentials: which wines can't be missed, and which are safe to skip. Organized like a "Shopper's Guide," this unique book offers the lowdown on the most dazzling wines in every price range—their regions, traditions, and which foods to match with them. With Kramer's trademark wit and intelligence, here is an invaluable tool to finding treasures in the local wine shop.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Primer to Italian Wines.......2007-05-22

There are some great reviews here of this book. The only thing I can add as someone who loves Italian wine is Matt Kramer does a great job with the big job he has given himself and tells you as much in his introduction. I thought the first 3 chapters were excellent with the philosophy of being Italian. Each chapter simply covers the basics of Northern Italy's wine giving you producers who are good at that particuliar wine. I would recommend this book as a primer for the real beginner. God read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book........2007-05-09

This is a wonderful book.

I was already familiar with many Italian wines, but my knowledge and experience with them was scattered.
This book put so many things into perspective for me.
I went to Italy for the first time last September and now reading this book, I can look back and better understand and appreciate what I saw then.
The organization of the book is outstanding. The book has identified several wines of interest which I have now tried with great enjoyment.
Kramer's writing style is not only informative, but he can turn a phrase and I found my self smiling at several points and then found myself looking for the next clever piece of writing.
This book has also triggered a desire to learn more about Italian wines and I have started reading the Joe Bastianich book as a follow up.
This book is a home run.

4 out of 5 stars Matt Kramer Understands Italian Wine.......2007-01-09

Matt Kramer provides a good perspective on Italian wines and winemaking. Although not a comprehensive encyclopedia of Italian wines or vintages it does provide a solid and understandable description of major and minor wine varieties. My only complaint...the typos are rampant and inexcusable.

5 out of 5 stars Matt does it again.......2006-12-17

This is a great book, even though it is not as ambitious as the California and Burgundy books. Matt Kramer focuses on the most important and easiest to find Italian wines, but he really gets to the bottom of what makes them great, or not. If you want to know why a 20-dollar Chianti normale from a great producer is way more exciting than a 200-dollar Sassicaia, you must read this book!
The only downside is that the book is not a complete guide of Italian wine. For that, you can get Vino Italiano. But Matt's informed, intellectual view of Italian wine is unique, and really irreplaceable. If you love Italian wine, you must own this book.

3 out of 5 stars Veni, vidi, vini.......2006-10-27

This is the most recent addition to Matt Kramer's "Making Sense" series of wine books. If you've read any of the others, you know that the dumbed-down "Making Sense" tag is a bit of a misnomer. The original Making Sense of Wine is one of the most intellectual wine books ever written, with thoughtful chapters on the nature of connoisseurship, the importance of typicity of place, and wine's changing role at the dinner table throughout history. And then there is Kramer's rare, inexplicably out-of-print Making Sense of Burgundy, which costs north of $100 if you can find it... rather like a prized Burgundy itself.

For better or worse, Making Sense of Italian Wine doesn't continue this deceptive labeling. It's organized like a buyer's guide for beginners and indeed Kramer states flatly in the introduction: "This book is not intended for wine lovers who are already deeply knowledgeable about Italian wines.... Instead, this book is for relative newcomers to Italian wines. It's for everyone who has enjoyed a bottle recommended to them in an Italian restaurant and would like a little guidance about how to go about having another such delicious experience."

The majority of the book consists of overviews of about 40 different types of Italian wine, broken down, for each category, into a brief history, a list of recommended producers, an overview of the cuisine typically served with the wines in Italy, various vital stats, and references to similar wine types. The culinary descriptions are particularly refreshing because they don't degenerate into any of the customary voodoo about what micro-elements in the wine and food "pair" with each other in whatever barely noticeable ways. Instead, Kramer just describes, quite evocatively, what the locals eat, so the result is a small lesson in culture rather than the usual dinner-table dogma.

The 40 wine categories cover about as much breadth as you can expect in a book of 250 pages without very much depth for any particular type. (Big guns like Barolo get 20 pages tops, mostly producer descriptions.) It's tempting to skip through a lot of this, but the fact is that Kramer has a real knack for isolating distinctive producers and tying their wine into the kind of story you want to retell to your friends when you have a glass of it in front of you. There's Saracco's Moscato d'Asti, for example, which Kramer describes as the closest thing on the commercial market to the genuine old-time Moscato d'Asti--the kind that was filtered through a sock and would often spontaneously explode in producers' cellars. If every chapter had a recommendation as on the mark and interesting as that one, the book would be indispensable, but unfortunately a lot of chapters seem to cry out for more flesh on the bones.

The three introductory essays are the emotional heart of the book in that they reveal Kramer having a real passion for the subject, rather than just a lot of expertise. The first is titled "Bella Figura--The Italian Love of the Beautiful Gesture" and is a warm account of the Italian obsession for the seemingly insignificant flourish designed to project the perfect image. For some producers, their "bella figura" is a fancy label or a heavy bottle; for others it's new oak barrels--"except for those traditionalist producers who, in a kind of jujitsu move, make the absence of small oak barrels their bella figura." Seen that way, suddenly it makes sense how both approaches can seem quintessentially Italian.

Writing for Your Life is an inspiring companion for any writer, professional or personal, who sees writing as a spiritual act. Early chapters on creativity and story would appeal to anyone interested in breaking through self-imposed boundaries, by encouraging the writer to "set yourself the task to write not only what you know but more especially what you don't know." We've all heard this before, but Deena Metzger (A Sabbath Among the Ruins) provides such resonant anecdotes and enticing exercises that it begins to seem not only doable but fun. "Even when writing about ourselves or an event that we know well," she says, "we sometimes find that the story ... is taking a direction we never expected. As it is always possible to come back to the known, it is politic, under these circumstances, to see where the story wants to go." Later chapters help writers access their inner worlds through meditation, spirit guides, mythology, tarot cards, the muse, visions, nature, and dreams. To follow Metzger's book closely requires a great deal of hard but rewarding, work. "Maintaining a spiritual practice is an ordeal like climbing a mountain," Metzger warns, "and it demands the same of us: commitment, discipline, endurance, focus, and awareness. There at the top is the sky and, perhaps, the large vision, but ultimately the meaning is in the climbing." --Jane Steinberg

Book Description

In the tradition of Annie Dillard and Natalie Goldberg, this resource for writers and non-writers alike shows the act of writing to be a dynamic means of knowing, healing, and creating the body, mind, and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars This seven-novel writer's bible for getting off the dime.......1997-12-04

Metzger does the best job I've seen on jump-starting your creativity, and tying your writing into archetypes. There's lots for the reader who wants to think of writing as a spiritual exercise. BUT for me, by far, its great gift is pragmatic. Between books, or when I feel stuck, or at the beginning of a revision, I take out "On Story" and work through all her suggestions as if it were the first time. I always come up with something new and deeper relevant to THIS story--or I come up with a new story entirely. If you are ready to get past Natalie Goldberg to the goods, here's the book. It helped me tremendously with my last novel.

5 out of 5 stars Beware - read this book and you may start writing your own!.......1996-07-09

Banish writer's block forever with Deena Metzger's Writing for Your Life. This boldly titled book is packed with inspirational material for the writer and creative writing teacher. There are many, many books on the market promising to unleash the imaginations of beginning writers - Metzger's actually delivers the goods. Her writing exercises confront, challenge and provoke. They are tickets to the most exciting journey of your life - an exploration of the human heart. If a book could turn a person into a writer, this is the book. Of course, just reading cannot do that trick. Metzger, however, makes the idea of writing so exciting that the blank page no longer intimidates but invites. If I were shipwrecked, I would take Writing for Your Life, reams and reams of paper, enough pens for a lifetime and M F K Fisher's The Art of Eating - but that's another story....
