Book Description

"I'm no different than any other kid. I'm just a GF kid," says Paris, matter-of-factly. She's the spunky eleven-year-old narrator of this story for kids with celiac disease who must eat gluten-free (GF) foods. With equal parts humor and directness, Paris* gets right down to business explaining what it's like to have celiac disease. (*Paris's mom wrote the story, full of her daughter's wisecracking comments, and her dad drew the funny, cartoony illustrations.)

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects 1 in 250 kids. If you have celiac disease, you cannot tolerate gluten, a substance found in many foods, including--gulp!--cake, cookies, pasta, or pizza. Don't sweat it. Paris has creative GF solutions for you. She offers tips on what to bring to school, parties, and sleep-overs; where to shop for GF foods at stores and online; and how to choose from among plenty of foods that don't contain gluten, like bananas, yogurt, popcorn, chocolate pudding cups, hamburgers, soda, and more! Paris explains that you don't have to worry about your friends either. They'll get on board once they understand that eating even a tiny bit of gluten can make you sick, tired, or slow your growth.

In THE GF KID, you'll find everything you need to know to get on with your gluten-free life, including:

What celiac disease is and how you can manage it
How to choose safe, gluten-free foods and what to avoid
Lists of gluten-free foods (and candy!)
Tips for eating away from home (restaurants, school, friends' homes, the movies)
Keeping your gluten-free stuff separate from gluteny stuff
Favorite GF recipes

If you're the parent of a preteen or young teen with celiac disease—-whether your child is newly diagnosed or has been living with celiac disease for a while—-you'll want to have this friendly and empowering book for your child. It's also a great read for friends, neighbors, classmates, and teachers who want to be supportive and help your son or daughter be a GF kid.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Celiac Reference Book.......2007-09-18

The GF Kid: A Celiac Disease Survival Guide is our favorite reference book for Celiac Disease. We have two children with Celiac Disease. My eight year old was diagnosed right before she started second grade. I sent the book in to school and her teacher read it to the class so that the teacher and students could better understand my daughter's condition and what she can and cannot eat. (Her third grade teacher is currently reading it as well).

It's a quick read - the only book my husband has read about Celiac - and it's very informative. I am purchasing my second copy so that I always have a spare. I plan to send this book to my newly diagnosed daughter's daycare.

I also send the book along when my daughter visits a new friend's house so that the parents can understand her condition and what she can and cannot eat. There are great drawings and examples of wonderful GF lunches and snacks.

I highly recommend this book to any parent with children with Celiac.

5 out of 5 stars Very Fun and Very Educational.......2007-01-10

My nine-year-old neice has celiac disease. I borrowed the book from the library first, and then bought it when I found it so informative for adults, and so much fun for kids. It is presented in quasi-comic book format, with a young teen girl narrating about what it's like to have celiac disease. Mostly she explains what she can and can't eat, and how she handles eating at her friends' houses, eating out, and not being "different" when she's different. I figured Jessie knew all these things, but the book would be a good vehicle for her to explain to her friends in a very easily explained way, about why she eats a little differently than they do.

I copied several pages of information for my own reference before giving it to her. The narrating character lists many natural foods she can eat, and many commercial foods she can eat. There are also pages of websites for more information, and sources for gluten free products. I would consider this a must-buy for a gluten free kid. Thank you to author Melissa London, this was a brilliant book, delivering exactly what we needed.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't just help kids..........2006-11-10

This book really relates to kids with celiac disease. It breaks it down and spells it out in terms they can relate to. My twin grandsons were diagnosed and this not only helped them, but all the adults, understand the new lifestyle they were embarking on. Thanks to the author and her parents for all the great information.

5 out of 5 stars The GF Kid: A Celiac Disease Survival Guide.......2006-11-10

This book is an easy to read, amusing, positive, informative book to help all those with Celiac and their family and friends understand the dietary lifestyle needed to manage Celiac. It was a great guide for my daughter to take to her college dorm to help her roommates and new friends understand her diet and condition. The illustrations are very amusing. I would also recommend this book for teachers or school counselors to help them and other students easily understand the basics of managing Celiac Disease.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2006-03-26

My 9year old son found this book brillant he could really associate with it and found it very informative and funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy and fun to read........2007-09-16

I loved how he changed around the contents from a typical guide book and let's you read the good stuff first. He has descriptions of the most popular tourist destinations in and around London first and then get's to the travel tips at the end. This book includes opinions rather than just straight facts based on his repeated trips to London. For example he recommends the paper Travelcards rather than the Oyster card for getting around on the tube and bus system. I couldn't find that sort of direction in the other London travel guide I bought.

4 out of 5 stars A good basic guide.......2007-02-12

This guide offered a number of interested ideas for families with children to visit. A number of them were unknown to us and not usually discussed in travel books.

5 out of 5 stars GET THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU LEAVE.......2004-06-14

I have found this book to be awsome. I have bought 3 other books about taking the kids to London and have found this the most helpful. The author has great advice on what to pack, where to go and how to get there. This book was my bible for our trip.

4 out of 5 stars Let's Take the Kids to London.......2003-08-10

If you plan to take children to London this is a great book. I warn you though if you get this and lots of other books you'll think this one too simplistic and put it aside. Don't. Its very straight forward and pragmatic approach is actually helpful if you read the narrative and don't just focus on the fact sheets. (The book has lots of "fact sheets" with basic details like hours, costs, location and how much time activities take.) I definitely agree with his choices of "must dos" and "highlights". I also appreciated his themes - like don't do in London what you can do at home and that children need to vary and pace actvities in ways very different than adults. We almost always took more time for each activity than he indicated. And of course some of the information is dated (for example most of the museums are free now.) Still, he has a wonderful feel for London and for what really catches a child's fancy.

5 out of 5 stars The Girls Loved It.......2007-01-08

We just got back from a holiday trip to England and my girls (12 & 15) carried their Journals everywhere. I can't tell you how many times one of them piped up with some neat insight into British culture. And, as we toured the sites, the Journal actually helped us choose what to visit and gave them their own perspective, for example, touring London while collecting points for the Scavenger Hunt. They competed to accumulate references to the three great queens of England and, as a by product, learned a bit about those powerful women. I was just flipping through one of their journals and see by their notes that the journal enhanced their enjoyment of the trip and will be a keepsake for them. One more thing, my older daughter found several topics that she may elaborate for school reports.

Book Description

For this smart, cheerful little book, Fodor's parent-experts have hand-picked 68 terrific things to do around London with a child in tow from the London Zoo the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Written by parents who live in London, this book is smart about what kids like and about what parents need. It includes all the details for planning (addresses, phone numbers, admission prices, and age-appropriateness); "Hey Kids!" info boxes filled with fun facts; ideas for places to grab a bite to eat nearby; and a cool "Games" section that will keep everyone happily occupied while waiting in line.

Designed to lure even the crankiest young tourists to sites of interest...with a nod toward grown-up sensibilities, too."
-- Good Housekeeping

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Ideas .......2006-02-19

I really loved this book for ideas on places to take your kids in London and the information provided for each site was outstanding. For example #41: Legoland, lets you know exactly how to get there whether you take a train or bus and helpful tips on how to get the most of of the experience. This book relates much more details and relevant info than the "For Kids" sections of regular travel books. Those travel books are still a "must have" but this book makes a good companion to cover all your bases. The only problem I had with this book was that most of the pricing info and some operational hours were not up-to-date and incorrect. As long as you keep in mind that this book refelects 2004 data, you are good to go. I also did not agree with some of their restaurant recommendations, but that is strictly a matter of taste so I didn't deduct any points. In any case, this book provides invaluable advise if you are traveling with kids. Each section is well thought out and answers most questions you might have while traveling. Why didn't anyone think of this earlier? We traveled to Germany two years ago and really could of used a book like this to make our trip less stressful in the planning stages.

5 out of 5 stars Great book when planning your trip.......2004-06-14

This book is great when planning out trip to London. They give great info (tube stop, hours, cost, places to eat, etc) but they also gave age information. They told you the ages each place was appropriate for and things to think about before going there.

4 out of 5 stars The only book my daughter will read.......2003-11-07

We are planning a trip to London and I bought a couple of books for my daughter and me to plan our trip. This one, however, is the only one she'll look at. The quick snipits about the cool stuff and the ideas for what to look out for have captured her attention. We love the places to eat close to the attractions, too.

A winner!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific addition to guide books.......2002-11-09

With so many competing guide books on the market, especially to popular destinations like London, product differentiation appealing to different sectors of the market is necessary to stay in the race.

This is in the same series as Fodor's Around Paris With Kids, and is a welcome foray into this market from a travel guide publisher long though to be the exclusive preserve of the well-heeled and unadventurous traveller.

This book is a handy accompaniement to a visit to London for anyone with children.

The information is useful, the size is wholly convenient. Nothing glossy, no photos, no pictures at all. I have borrowed all the glossy stuff from the library to read ahead of time, and anything useful have put as margin notes in THIS book, because this is the one I plan to have along. It tells you how to get to each place, opening hours, what to see and do there. Includes information on attractions especially for kids, as well as all the conventional tourist sites, museums etc, emphasising the aspects that are most likely to appeal to kids.

If you are a first-time visitor to London you may feel more comfortable having a good, conventional guide book along as well, but if you don't need the basics AND you have children along with you, I reckon you'll want to have this book above all others.

    Book Description

Received wisdom has it that inner cities and children don't mix. In fact London functions as a wonderful all-weather playground, with a rich array of entertainment - much of it free - if you know where to look. This book is not a comprehensive listing of the classes, facilities, parks and museums the capital has to offer. Rather, the guide features activities that parents/carers and children can enjoy together. Omitting the type of indoor adventure playground your kids may adore, but where you're left sipping a cup of vending-machine coffee in a noisy shed, it favors activities where there's pleasure to be had for both of you. Though there are plenty of child-oriented places in the selection, also included are houses and gardens, museums and galleries that can be appreciated on two levels: adults can enjoy the art, architecture, landscape or history and children the trails, mazes, parkland and pictures. In these cases both sets of needs have been addressed - for instance by telling you where to find the best of the collection so you can zoom in before your children's whining becomes unbearable, while at the same time pointing out the features that they will find fascinating.

1 out of 5 stars Book falls apart.......2005-08-12

This is my grandson's favorite Froggy story. However, the quality of the paper back book is abysmal. Both copies fell apart within 24 hours, with the middle pages detaching almost at once. Children's books must be durable and these are not. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Froggy Plays Soccer.......2003-03-13

I would recommend this book if your child likes soccer or if you are hoping your child will like soccer, otherwise not such a great book.... I thought it was cute but definitely something a child who likes soccer can only appreciate

2 out of 5 stars Just mailing it in at this point.......2003-01-25

The original "Froggy Gets Dressed" book was extremely clever. But this book is the weakest brand extension since Lego clothing. It includes the basic Froggy elements (sound effects starting with z, authority figures yelling "FRROOGGYY", and our noble protagonist turning more red than green) but you have to wonder when the most original part of the story is Froggy picking his nose. Of course, if your child likes Froggy and likes soccer they will love the book, but I wish the authors had put a bit more effort into it.

    5 out of 5 stars Cute!.......2001-08-02

An adorable book. Froggy books are great...if you like the others this is a must have; especially if you knwo someone who loves soccer!

First we read Froggy Goes to the Doctor, then this one. We are now in love with Jonathan London's frog family and his main man, Froggy. Lots of needed repetition as Froggy prepares for a picnic with Dad. We are now searching for more Froggy books, and my daughter and I recommend you and your little one do the same! Keep on reading!

    5 out of 5 stars What a fun book.......2001-12-01

My children love this book, the sound effects part of the book keep them laughing from beginning to end. A great introduction to the Froggy series. I would recommend this book for children aged about 4-7.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2* Good for Toddlers AND the Young Reader!.......2001-05-26

Froggy wakes up full of enthusiasm for a day's bike ride and picnic with his dad, but his disorganization keeps them at home until the end of the day. In between, Froggy looks around for assorted biking/picnic items (e.g., a ball, a helmet), slamming and bonking around, and finding them in the most unusual places (what ARE those peaches doing in his bed?!). Each time the two are ready to leave another forgotten item must be found:

"Frrrooggyy!" called his father. "I'm re-e-a-d-y!" yelled Froggy... "But Froggy...you need your bicycle helmet!" "I don't know where it is!..." "It's wherever you left it!" "I forget!" "You have to LOOK for it!" This little routine will sound familiar both to children and those who raise them! There's a happy denouement as both Froggy and his dad finally set out (after deciding they're both so hungry they'd better eat the picnic first-at home!).

Bright, uncluttered pictures, 27 pages, lots of word repetition and cool sound effects make this a treat to listen to and read. A toddler who loved the listening to this book will enjoy returning to it as an older reader (perhaps around grade 2-3).

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for any young child!.......2000-05-10

This book has become my 2 and 4 year olds favorite story. They love to see froggy looking for his misplaced items and it has taught them to look for their own items when they are lost.
