Book Description
Travel guides come and go, but the Footprint South American Handbook, now in its 82nd edition and with over 1 million copies sold, holds a special place as the gold standard in the field. With nearly 1,700 pages, this guide contains almost 40 percent more information than its nearest competitor. Footprint South American Handbook 2006 takes the adventurous traveler far from the gringo trail to explore the landscapes, wildlife, archaeology, and folk culture of this vast continent, from the Orinoco Delta to the southern ice fields of Chile and Argentina. Called the "Backpacker’s Bible," this guide covers every inch of South America, including the Guianas and the Falkland Islands. Rigorously checked and updated each year, the book features objective recommendations of great places to stay and eat, from colonial haciendas to simple palm-thatch beach huts; an extensive planning section with tips on how to get off the beaten track; historical and cultural background; and a full-color highlights map.

Still the best..........2007-10-11
This is still the best, esp for all you boomer hippies who hiked the Inca Trail in the '60's and '70's...

Comparing Footprint.......2007-03-09
This Footprint guide definitely compares to Lonely Planet. It is laid-out very well and easy to follow. The only thing I miss is the actual prices for accomodations. Even though they change quickly, it is a better way to make comparisons.
Less Budget Accommodations/Youth Hostels than 2003 Ed........2007-01-14
I am a budget backpacker. I owned and used the 2003 S.A. edition three years ago and must say that the 2007 S.A. edition is not as budget friendly when it comes to accommodations. I am in South America for 5 months and left the 2003 edition at home thinking that the 2007 edition would have the same listings along with new listings. Not so. For example, one of my favorite budget hostels in Argentina that still exists and was once in the book is no longer in it. When I asked the hostel why they are not in the 2007 Footprint book they said that one has to pay several hundred dollars to be in it these days. And that's just to have a few sentences about the place. I have just about found each city's budget accommodations (i.e. youth hostels) on the internet during this trip because the 2007 Footprint just doesn't cut it in this department.
Otherwise, the book does have good information in other areas. But I don't know if I'd be carrying this thick book all over the place for 5 months if I had known about its lack of budget accommodations listings.
Footprint South American Handbook 2007.......2007-01-09
Simply excellent! Not only for backpackers but for everyone who need detailed information on travelling in South America. What a pity there is no German edition of that book.

Book Description
New Book bridges Ancient Wisdom with Modern Technology!
Dr. Randall C. Jimenez, a San Jose State University educator, and Richard B. Graeber, an engineering documentation specialist, have collaborated to bring the first Technical Manual for the Aztec Calendar ever produced. The book was created to address a lack of clear, concise information regarding this ancient native artifact and to correct inaccuracies as taught in history classes across the U.S. today. By using concise documentation techniques, over 240 sources were compressed into a 100-page book, which includes 150 technical drawings, 230 word native glossary, timeline and a 12-page bibliography.
This unique book entitled Aztec Calendar Handbook, on the surface appears to be about the Sun Stone, but in reality is about of Native American history. Chapters include; the History of the Aztec Calendar, Native American Time-keeping, Keepers of Time, Founding of Tenochtitlan and the Legend of Quetzalcoatl. It is designed as an accessible authority on the Aztec Calendar and the people that had such a profound effect on the shaping of modern America.
By looking at myths, legends & history with an Aztec's perception of God, this new Manual provides needed answers to many important questions.

This book is clear, non-technical, and easy to read and understand. People interested in the subject will find it useful.
Aztec Calendar Handbook.......2002-09-08
Grammatical aside, there is no other treatise on pre-Columbian America and the Aztec Calendar as complete, concise and thought provoking as this one. I didn't notice the grammatical error until the fellow from Tejas spotted it. I was too amazed at having my perception of Native America shattered. After reading many books on the Aztecs, I bought this book and was favorably impressed by the depth, continuity and treatment of the entire subject matter. There is so much information in this book its astounishing. The bibliography contains over 200 sources. Direct eyewitnesses from the 16th century are quoted. The Time-Line is great. I will be referring to this book for years to come.

God bless the Boy Scouts !!.......2007-09-03
I was a Cub Scout, Weblo, and Boy Scout for years. Some of my fondest memories are of times spent with my fellow scouts around the campfire, telling stories, jokes, and just being BOYS. This edition reminds me of the pre-PC and pre-secular Boy Scouts, when scouting was almost a calling for teenage boys, and certainly contributed to their moral and ethical upbringings. In this day of anti-God, anti-anything-as-long-as-it's-secular-humanism, it's refreshing to read a handbook with advice on serving one's God, and that it should be a regular part of one's life. Kudos to the publisher for re-introducing a classic.
Some things never change.......2007-08-09
Superb book. In the world we live in there is constant change, this book demonstrates that somethings are timeless.

Customer Reviews:
Very complete but not a typical travel guide.......2006-07-03
This book totally fulfilled what I was expecting, meaning an infinity of detailed technical information about nearly all places of interest in the whole continent. Hence, if you are looking for a very complete list of hotels, restaurants, museums, travel agencies etc. this is the perfect book. However, this book can't possibly, and is not meant to provide any but the very basic background information about history, language, culture, politics etc. As long as you don't expect something like a classical travel guide and rather view this as a "manual" buy it but consider to complement it with additional background information where needed.
Rather good, not close to perfect.......2006-05-03
There is a lot of information in the guide book and it is up to date. There is information on major cities and smaller, less travelled places. There are a lot of hotel recommendations, more than in any other guide book.
These are the good sides of the guide book, but there are also some seroius lacks. The maps are bad and there are less maps than in other guide books. The basic information on sights is difficult to browse. There is no background information on sights. There are no highlightened sights. The prices are quoted in USD, not in local currency. There is no information for gay travellers.
If you are planning to travel widely in Brazil consider other guide books. The Brazilian section is the worst one!
Still the best on South America.......2006-02-04
Still the most experienced, complete, objective, relevant, orderly, up-to-date guide book on South America, with the clearest maps since 2005. Fine paper makes it compact too.
The Footprint Peru 2005, an annotated photocopy of it, Footprint South America 2005 & 2004, Footprint Ecuador, Peru & Bolivia 2005, & Footprint Central America & Mexico have all been stolen from our library during 2005, while various competitors books have been left behind by travellers.
Most competitors books appear only once in 4 years & are hopelessly out of date for most of that time.
Highly recommended.......2005-12-25
The Handbook reads better than ever. In print since 1924, and known as the bible to South America, the new South America guide provides reliable information. The handbook profiles national parks and of special note is the "Responsible Tourism" essay that the book pioneered in 1992.
Largest and most up-to-date guide on South America (as of Dec 2005), but not well written.......2005-12-13
I am comparing this book to its primary competitor Lonely Planet South America.....
Pros to Footprint:
1.)Up to date; as of this writting Lonely planet had not updated their south america guide for about 2 years, footprint is very uptodate
2.)Most content: at over 1700 pages this book has the most content
Negatives:
1.) Not well written. I find this book very confusing, Lonely Planet is 4 or 5 times easier to use...Footprint is very vague on doing basic things like taking a bus from one town to next, and hard to plot a route to follow..
2.)Paper quality....I know this is a minor thing, but Footprint used very cheap paper, and it is hard to turn pages...also almost no photographs in this book, so you better have good imagination ;)
Personally, if I had to choose only one guide I would choose Lonely Planet, but this is perhaps a good supplement.....I haven't really looked at any of the Fodor books.....

Book Description
The Handbook of North American Indians is a 20-volume encyclopedia summarizing knowledge about all Native peoples north of Mesoamerica, including cultures, languages, history, prehistory, and human biology, intended to serve as a standard reference work for anthropologists, historians, students, and the general reader. Each volume contains heavily illustrated chapters by the main authorities on each topic and concludes with an extensive bibliography and index. Volume 6 covers Indians of the prairie and high plains of U.S. and Canada.
Customer Reviews:
The new standard reference work on the Plains.......2002-03-11
After a long wait volume 13 of the Handbook of North American Indian series has been published. This book will become the new standard reference work on the area. It is a massive book coming in 2 parts. Part 1 covers the climate and natural resources, archaeology of the Plains, languages, history of anthropological research and chapters on the village tribes and the nomadic tribes on the northern plains. Part 2 continues with chapters on the remaining nomad tribes as well as on music, arts, the sun dance and other more general chapters.
There is a wealth of information here for anyone interested in the Plains Indians and a 200 page bibliography for those who which to delve even deeper into the subject. In general I loved this book, one or two chapters I found a little disappointing - not being up to the high standards of the rest of the book. My main complaint is that for a book so long in production and with a high price it is full of little mistakes - spelling mistakes, wrong captions to photographs, mistakes in authors names, even tables badly formatted. I was left with the impression of a book rushed into production.
Despite this gripe this is a marvellous book and essential reading.

Customer Reviews:
The best South America traveler guide.......2005-09-05
1. Much more detailed than Lonely Planet.
2. Reliable
3.Saved me a lot
Essential for travel to South America.......2005-07-23
I have been travelling regularly to South America since 1994, and from 1996 to 1997 I lived in Lima, Peru. Of all the travel guides I've used over the years, this one beyond any doubt is the most comprehesive single volume of all countries in South America.
I have found the information to be highly reliable. Restaurants and hotels are categorized into the correct price categories, addresses and phone numbers are as up-to-date as can reasonably be expected, and other important information such as bus route numbers, time tables, museum and park hours, holidays, etc. are generally accurate.
The book also does a good job in its descriptions of the sections of cities as well as highlighting the most popular and the off-the-beaten path destinations within the various regions of each country. The maps provided are also very nicely displayed.
If you are planning a trip to South America, particularly if you plan to visit more than one country, use this guide to organize your itinerary, and then bring it with you to make your trip more enjoyable.
Don't get on the flight before you get this handbook.......2005-04-30
We spent 2 and half months in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru. You begin to trust it as you go along and towards the end of our trip we swore by it and started helping other travellers with suggestions from the book. You don't have to think twice when a place is recommended.
The best part of the book is the way is structured. Once you get a feel for it you will love it.
You might need a detailed guide for larger cities like Buenos Aires and Rio.
Hope this helps.
The best on South America.......2004-12-21
The most experienced, complete, objective, relevant, orderly, up-to-date guide book on South America now also has the clearest maps.
