Book Description
More than simply an escape from New York's sweltering summer streets, the strip of Brooklyn's south shore known as Coney Island embodied a new American attitude toward entertainment. Here, you'll experience the decadent delights of this magical land of ritzy hotels and penny arcades, where dance pavilions and freak shows shared space with sizzling burlesque and cooling ocean breezes. You'll meet George Tilyou, whose Steeplechase Park featured the Blowhole Theater, the Insanitarium and the Human Pool Table, and Nathan Handwerker, whose Nathan's Famous hot dogs became synonymous with summertime food. You'll ride the legendary Cyclone roller coaster and stroll through Dreamland and Luna Park, where generations of New Yorkers met and mingled in a place that came to define American fun.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book about an impressive metropolis!.......2007-04-17
This book is excellent!
The introductory essay brilliantly connects the history of the city, the multiculturalism of the city, the reality of the city in a way that is warm and insightful. It smoothly flows from the actions of yesteryear that have lead to the great metropolis of today, all while maintaining an emphasis on the human side of the story. Its a great literary preparation for the visual feast your eyes will experience as it glances, absorbs, and inspects photos in the latter parts of the book.
The images themselvess are fantastic. The book is divided into six chapters: City of Islands (which is the well written introduction), Passage (random images of the city), Retreat (images of green areas, parks, and gardens), Connection (images of bridges and roadways), Structure (images of facades and interiors of a few important buildings), and Edge (images of places along the outer edge of the city such as Staten Island, Rockaway Beach, and Coney Island among other places). There is a certain human element through out the book. One of the nicest element is that the author places emphasis on showing pieces of all New York boroughs and avoids the Manhattan bias typical of other books about this city.
All in all, the book shows New York City as it is, a great multicultural metropolis worth saving!
THEY WILL RISE AGAIN!!.......2001-09-17
I bought this book back in 1999. I am a New Yorker and I wanted a book that showcased all of my wonderful city. I never, in my wildest dreams, thought that I would have to look at this book in order to ever see the World Trade Center again. After the attack on New York City on Sept.11, 2001, my whole world as I knew it changed forever. This wonderful, beautiful book is my only reminder of the New York City that I have known and loved all my life. I know the Twin Towers will rise again! Until then I have my book!
A great documentation.......1999-07-20
I bought the book based on the coverphoto. Regarding that I in fact wanted a book on New York, I cannot say I regret it. The book is fully illustrated with beautiful photographs of New Yorks five boroughs. Though I`ve been to New York five times before I`ve only been to Manhattan and Queens, but I surely was tempted to see all five boroughs when I go back during fall -99. The photographs has a soul in a way and all represent a motion or a mood that I catched right away. I could actually feel the smells the sounds and the dynamic pulse New York stands for. Pete Hamill's text as an introduction to each borough gives the reader a fully good and poetic insight in New Yorks majestic soul.

Everything Newcomers Need to Know About New York.......2005-10-24
The Newcomers Handbook for Moving to and Living in New York City is a thorough and comprehensive book that tells the reader almost everything that he or she needs to know about the New York City metropolitan area. The book provides detailed descriptions of a wide variety of neighborhoods and communities in and around New York City. The detailed descriptions give a good sense of what each neighborhood and community is about and thus enable the newcomer to narrow his or her focus in terms of finding the right place to live. The book also provides a great deal of useful information. This information includes sources of services, names of government agencies, names and addresses of retail establishments, and guidance on the process of apartment-hunting that seems to be unique to New York City. As if to highlight its attention to detail, the book includes a Manhattan Address Locator on page five. This odd little table provides the "secret formula" for finding out the cross streets for almost any address anywhere on the island of Manhattan. Newcomers will find this item particularly useful as they try to navigate their way across Manhattan in search of housing and employment. I highly recommend this book to any newcomer to the New York City metropolitan area.
not really for moving or living in NYC.......2005-05-26
The neighborhood descriptions take up the first 150 pages, but they are written for a turist guide, not a "moving guide". There is no mention of prices, or managing companies, or name of buildings. It is paradoxical that the best advice in this guide for the purpose of finding buildings is to buy another guide: Gabriel's Apartment Rental Guide
Other information take up the rest of the book (roughly page 150 to 400). This section includes the following lists: some realtors, some movers, utilties, some banks, some child-related services, some shops, some theaters and more. Most of these lists do not appear comprehensive, or selected according to some specific criterion. I believe you can find the same information on the internet or the yellow pages.
There is some useful information, but not much of it. It might have also some modest value in making some of the information readily accessible. All in all, I regret the purchase.

A Fine Resouce For NY Area Hikers.......2004-11-30
Christopher Brooks surely did his homework in writing 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: New York City: with northern New Jersey, southwestern Connecticut, and western Long Island. The details on the many hikes in the Tri State area are very helpful. One can easily trace around the suggested trails that Brooks provides. Also Brooks adds a little history to many of the recommended trails.
He gives equal emphasis to New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island, and the Hudson Region. Also a comprehensive index is provided so the reader can easily distinguish flat hikes from vigorous climbs to ones to bring the children on. Every base is covered as this book is a fantastic guide for anyone looking to explore new hiking trails in the New York area.
Surprising Finds Within a Short Distance of the City.......2004-09-17
You would think that a hike in New York City would take you from say Central Park to Battery Park along the sidewalks. To my surprise, the Brooks have found all of these hikes within a reasonable distance from the city. As a for instance, the Pelham Bay Park is 2,766 acres in size with 13 miles of shoreline. It's also reachable by public transport. (Take the #6 train followed by the Bx29 bus.) The hiking there is flat, shoreline and all that. Or there's Norvin Green where you'll need sturdy hiking shoes, and find multiple deep-water streams to cross in a 9.3 mile up and down trail. Other hikes include wildlife refuges, state forests, national recreation areas, swamps, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, ocean shores. You can get away from the concrete.
As a book, the layout makes it easy to find things. The overall maps lead you to the general area you may find interesting. The descriptions of each of the 60 hikes includes a description, a detailed map of each, elevation profile, and directions - usually by automobile and public transport. As the back cover says, If you live near NYC, get it.

Book Description
From its southernmost point--just off the elegant Plaza Hotel--and up through Harlem Meer, Central Park is 843 acres of delight and respite in the midst of the city. Step into New York's heart and soul with an intimate and informative photographic walking tour that spotlights the park's well-known joys (such as Bethesda Fountain and Strawberry Fields) and its hidden glories. Take an incomparable close-up look at the magnificent cherry-blossomed trees, old-fashioned streetlamps, shiny and elaborate bridges, sun-dappled walkways, statues, and lake. Some spots, where soft willows overhang water, make the urban hustle and bustle outside disappear. Elsewhere, you can lie on a blanket of grass and gaze at the skyscape-including some of New York's most famous buildings. The images show Central Park in every season, in morning and evening light, filled with people or empty on a foggy afternoon. A very special view of New York's greatest treasure.

The Bridges of New York
ASIN: 0760738858 |
Book Description
It's sometimes easy to forget that Manhattan is, after all, an island, and that water is as much a part of New York as concrete and steel. What links Manhattan with Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island and New Jersey are hundreds of bridges; some of stone, some iron or gleaming steel, and all vital for tying together the people and places of the city. Through words and pictures, the histories of New York's bridges are traced from early pedestrian and wagon crossings to such engineering marvels as the Brooklyn and George Washington Bridges, along with profiles of the bridge builders, including the famous Roebling family and the prolific O.H. Ammann, designer of the George Washington, Verrazano Narrows, and other major New York bridges.
