2 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2007-09-28

In all honesty, I was rather disappointed with this one. The story is that of Jeanne, a survivor of the mass genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Now living with a foster family in Germany, Jeanne told her story to her new mother, who in turn put the words on paper. It's not that the story itself isn't good, because it is...what that poor child went through is inconceivable to most. I was interested in the story line, but the way it was narrated bothered me.

First of all, at the start of every chapter, the foster mother/author, Hanna Jansen writes a page or two. Usually some sort of anecdote, or a story of some sort. Which is all fine and good, but lady, I didn't buy the book to read what you think. Were you in Rwanda running for your life? Didn't think so. So shush and let the girl tell her story. It frustrated me.

My second complaint is the overall language used in the book. There's no way that those words came out of a teenagers mouth. Sorry, but it feels to me like Jansen edited and embellished where she saw fit. Maybe something got lost in the translation and its not Jansen's fault at all, I don't know. Regardless, it irriated me.

The book has so much potential. I was so excited to read it when I picked it up, but seriously folks, it was a disappointing one.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-02-12

OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is the horrifying novel that is based on a true story about the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This was a subject that I didn't know too much about until I read this book, which made me realize how horrible events such as this one are still happening in today's society. How we could let this happen is beyond me.

The book is written by the adoptive mother of Jeanne to tell the story that is often called the modern day Holocaust. As with the original Holocaust, many children were left to fight for themselves and try and find a new way to survive. Jeanne's family is killed and she is left to fend for herself, and the book is about how she achieves that.

When you read this book you aren't on the basic level of thinking. You are much beyond that. The imagery in this book is not good, because in no way do you want this to happen to anyone, but at the same time it's very real. I felt as if I were standing the fields and forests and homes of these people and was surrounded by people fighting for their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Touching Story.......2006-08-02

Hanna Jansen's OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is a touching tribute to her adopted daughter who was orphaned in the Rwandan war. Based on her daughter's recollections of her childhood--memories both pleasant and bittersweet--Jansen weaves a tale of sorrow, hope, fear, joy, and love. For example, the early chapters of the book feature a young girl living life large. She is visiting her grandmother. She's playing with her cousins. She's fighting with her sister and brother. Her mom works outside the home, her dad is away a lot...and she has an incredibly whiny sister that she struggles with on a daily basis. She's vibrant and unaware that her world would change in just a few short years. Later chapters reveal the pain, the loss, the confusion, the fear of not knowing if one is going to survive another day. Witnessing such atrocities as seeing your parents and siblings killed by strange soldiers. Seeking help from family friends, yet being turned away because they don't want to risk dying too. Her survival story is inspiring.

The story is beautifully told, Jansen has done a great job here. Her book is definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Following Your Dreams.......2007-04-15

This book is all about following your dreams. If God has given you the desire to be used by Him in ministry to others, you must read this book. It is a step-by-step guide to encourage you and challenge you to follow God's call on your life. It is full of inspiring, personal stories and will encourage you to join God in the most excellent adventure of stepping out in faith as you discover and follow your dreams.
As I began reading this book, I honestly couldn't put it down. TerKeurst spoke to my heart and her words sparked in me the desire to pick up my dreams after putting them down for a time.

4 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Lesson for Christian Women.......2007-02-15

This book is wonderfully insightful for anyone who is interested in becoming closer to God. He is truly working through Lysa.

5 out of 5 stars Right book, right author, right time.......2005-09-21

God always seems to come through. As old dreams have had to be left, and my life seems to be a blank slate for the future, the Lord answered my heart's cry of, "NOW WHAT, God??" with this book. It could not have come at a better time, but then, God knew that.
Mrs. Terkeurst has written an encouraging, thought provoking book for those of us stepping out(somtimes unwillingly) into uncharted wilderness. I am a visual learner, and her straight forward writing style, stories and analogies are easy for me to mentally "see" thus making the concepts easier to grasp. This and her book Radically Obedient, Radically Blessed are two of my all time favorites. Mrs. Terkeurst, bless you, my dear.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Devotional.......2007-01-04

I selected this devotional for our Bible study group because it was especially good for those who haven't had a daily devotional time. This fit the bill perfectly. Not only is it good for those who are new to personal Bible study, it is provides a rich time for those who are well versed in the Bible. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-11-10

As I walk through the Psalms I am amazed at the depth to this scripture. The author will open your eyes to the Word and the inspiration behind the words

4 out of 5 stars Great Guidance.......2006-05-10

I found this book to be really helpful in guiding me through the Psalms. It helped me to apply the Bible to my own life. I love to journal and writing things down helps me remember them longer so this book was perfect for me. It was a great introduction to the Psalms that I have never read before. The author encourages you to let God speak to you and to take out of your time in this devotional what He wants to teach You. There are a lot of questions so those who don't like to write probably would not care for this book. It also requires a lot of thought so those looking for a "quick devotional" would probably not care for this either.

2 out of 5 stars Just Read Psalms.......2005-05-20

I was very bored with this devotional. I had read Psalms several times and thought this was a great way to dig deeper into the meaning of the individual Psalms. Although the author included some great additional information regarding things such as who wrote the psalm, place it was written, meaning of certain words, circumstances in which it was written, etc, the devotional apsect of it I fould child-like. The questions were not in the least bit thought provoking, rather it was more like filling up space. The daily study begins with asking you to circle certain words that appear over and over throughout that day's Psalm, so you find yourself more concerned with finding the hidden words than you are in understanding what God is trying to show you through the word. I was actually somewhat relieved when the 30 days were over. I reccomend that you just read Psalms, and don't bother with the study.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Painful, Convicting.......2004-08-25

I cannot tell you enough good things about this devotional/bible study through the Psalms. I dare you to take this walk and commit to 30 days of dedicated study and self-reflection through the Psalms. You will gain insight into your own heart and God will make known to you those places where you are not right with Him.

In more than 20 miles of original walks, distinguished historian Andrew Duncan uncovers London's best-kept secrets. From ancient waterways and the vast network of tunnels that weave their way beneath the city's streets to easily missed courtyards and gardens-each walk is full of surprises.

5 out of 5 stars guidebook to london's secrets.......2000-12-02

I love this book! It has detailed instructions to find (and history of) little known spots in London that are marvelous. There are several color pictures and hand-drawn maps to help guide you on your walk.

Some of the fascinating bits of London that you can track down with this book are the rooftop gardens in Kensington, the underground tube stations that are no longer used and the rivers that have been tamed and paved over but still peek out here and there.

Even long-time residents will find new insight into their favorite city. Every time I go to London I search out one thing from this book and I'm always glad I did. For tourists, if you bring this book and an A-Z, and a copy of the latest Fodor's or Eyewitness, you won't want for anything else.

Purchased as a gift. If you want a book on hiking trails in Oregon, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book--Great Research.......2007-06-08

I really enjoyed this book. I own all of his hiking books and have done about 50-60 different hikes (some many times) because of him. I have lived in Oregon all of my life and did not know many of these stories that William tells in this book. My favorite part is about Silver Creek Falls State Park and how they use to float cars over the South Falls for tourists to view for ten cents. I also like the story about the building of the lighthouse on an island of off Tillamook.
I highly recomend this book and I hope William Sullivan writes more history books, because he is very well researched and is a very good author with an easy to follow writing style.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!.......2000-12-31

My husband bought me this book because we're moving to Oregon; I'm thrilled with it, both the book and the move. Mr. Sullivan's writing style is wonderful. It is amazing what this guy knows about every nook and cranny of the state. I am eager to explore the terrain the author describes and look forward to reading his other books on hiking in Oregon. Every travel or hiking book should strive to be as informative and interesting as this one. Alas, its rarely the case. This is a special book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2000-01-26

After moving to Oregon a few months ago, I discovered this gem of a book. While most hiking books will have plenty of information about where to go and what to see, I've never seen one that's just plain fun to read before. The book is full of interesting and amusing stories that will keep you turning pages late into the night. And, even better, the places that are described--you can hike them! One "hike" described is through downtown Portland that describes the flood of 1894 (among other things). Sullivan writes, "Chinese locals staged a gala boat race from the New Market Theater up Second Street to Stark and back on First. Winning time for the eight-block course was five minutes flat, a record that is likely to stand for some time." Last weekend I did the Tillamook Head hike (#11). If you haven't heard the story behind Tillamook Lighthouse located a mile offshore, pick up this book and read about it. You won't be disappointed! It's the best darned hiking book I've ever read in my life!

I think this book is a good book to read because it gives a lot of information about the Navajo way of life. I also liked it because it makes you want to know what is going to happen to Kee and his family. They are captured by the U.S. government and made to walk out of their sacred land to a fort controlled by the government. They have to do many things differently. They have to build new homes and grow crops from a place that does not supply the right materials for them. Kee learns many things on the walk and at the fort. You will never forget it once you've read it. And if you read it, you will find out if Kee's family will be free. By David Umphres, 5th grade

Every evening, old Miz Berlin walks around Mary Louise's long block, talking to herself. One day, the girl follows Miz Berlin, and finds that she's telling stories. And they're wonderful stories-about feathers falling from the sky, hurricanes of years past, and even her own birth. Every evening, Mary Louise walks with Miz Berlin, absorbing her tales. And when Miz Berlin can no longer walk, she leaves the girl stuffed full of stories to tell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for all generations.......2000-02-26

An evening stroll engenders an unexpected friendship between an elderly woman, and a young girl. The elderly lady (Miz Berlin) recounts her childhood through beautifully creative stories which capture the imagination of the young girl and further ignites her curiosity about her elderly friend. The book's soft and poignant illustrations reveal the innocent spirit of the young girl's imaginings and gently draws the reader into the fantasy.

I think adults and children - young girls especially - will enjoy reading Miz Berlin Walks. It is a tender, touching story that should be shared amongst all generations.

5 out of 5 stars Hiking guide as art.......2007-07-29

This beautiful guide to England's Coast to Coast walk is a rare thing... a very practical and reasonably up to date guide by the man who originated the route together with the original drawings and maps Wainright did to accompany the original edition. It is a beautiful book. The photoreproductions of Wainright's original handprinting give the book the feel of an historical artifact; a work of art from a different era.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but text is ridiculously small.......2007-01-09

The content in this book is terrific. Unfortunately, the text is ridiculously small. I cannot conceive of why. If the text were a reasonable size, I would have given the book a 5-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars A Coast to Coast Walk.......2005-08-31

A great book for planning and walking across England. It has all the details necessary and is written in a humorous vein. The personal drawings and asides add to the light-hearted approach. Really necessary for the details of the walk.

    Book Description

The thoroughly updated fourth edition of the most popular hiking guide to Massachusetts.

Massachusetts spans a splendid diversity of hiking terrain, and this completely updated fourth edition of 50 Hikes in Massachusetts takes you to the state's most stunning locations. This guidebook introduces miles of terrain to hikers, birders, beachcombers and meanderers of all levels, including gentle walks suitable for the entire family, and rugged outings for experienced hikers.

As geologists, Brian White and John Brady add fresh depth with observations on the geology, plant, and animal lore included with each hike. Bartholomew's Cobble may be a brief 3-miler, but its fascinating history spans thousands of years. The Caratunk Wildlife Refuge is a mecca for birders, and the giant boulder maze left by glaciers long ago lend a sense enchantment to the hike. Fields of wildflowers, towering summits, deep forests, windswept beaches, and historical curiosities are among the treasures you'll encounter on these hikes. 50 black & white photographs, 51 maps, index.
