Customer Reviews:
Excellent for budget travelers.......2007-10-12
I used this guidebook while touring Spain and Portugal. It was full of good information on places to visit and places to stay. The directions were easy to follow and I found their reviews of the places I stayed to be accurate. A word of caution - the Lisbon bus depot has relocated since this book was published - check with the tourist office for up to date info.
Been to Spain Twice..........2006-01-31
...and I used this guide both times. Incredible amounts of information for the budget traveler. I especially appreciate how accurate everything is. The food recommends are great, too.
Basically, of the guides I have used before, this is the best for somebody on a budget. Also, this guide seems the best for anybody traveling alone.
On a Shoestring.......2005-09-15
Whenever you would want to travel on "a shoestring" consider this guide. It gives some great suggestions for things to see, places to stay and nice restaurants. All this information is presented in a structured and clear way. Let's go is not afraid to express their own opinion without being biased. It is also great read if you want get some background on Spain and Portugal.
The big question at hand of course is if it beats the Lonely Planet and other budget guides. I feel this is something of personal preference. The information in the guide is not that different from one of the other guides but the way they structure it is different. An advantage of the Let's go is that it seems to somewhat less popular than the Lonely Planet.
Therefore you run less of a risk that this "special place" that is mentioned somewhere in the guide is crowded with other travelers that bought the same guide.
A Practical Guide.......2005-08-04
Excellent information for all tourists. . For the older traveler willing to spend a few more dollars forget the lodging advice, use the food, transportion, money information, etc. For the young on a budget all the information is important.
A Magic book, as we called it.......2005-06-15
From March till May of 2005 i have been cruising all of Portugal and south of Spain ( andaluzia ). I have accidentally bought this book in amazon by reading a negative review on Lonely planet - and all i can say is that this book is worth every cent of its price.
If you are not budget traveler - this books is not for you, but if you want to save money, and see the best of Portugal and Spain - it's definitely for you.
I and my friends have found lots of good accommodations for the very low price, we've seen thing that Lets go recommended, and we went to the lots of places. This book save me lots of money and helped to explore those two beautiful countries.
Of course some prices ar higher than they say, but that doesn't go beyond 1-5 euros.
And as they say - not all information should bu trusted 100 % - some thing change in a short time.
So, if you are a independent traveler ( or perhaps a student like me ) and want to see the best of Spain on Portugal, saving as much as you can - this book is definitely for you

Absolutely worth it.......2006-01-07
I spent about 8 months in Italy last year with this book as a my bible. It helped me find the 'off-the-beaten-path' experience i was looking for especially in some of the major cities where it can be easy to get sucked into the tourist trap. I loved this book so much I actually bought another copy after losing my first, and the second quickly took on a beating. What I like most is it allows you to choose, there are enough major sites to keep you busy but enough quirky spots to make it an adventure. It does an excellent job with restaurants as well and after studying in Parma my standards were pretty high. I got lost quite a bit but i can't say that is the fault of the maps so much as my own directional ability. Anyway, in short this guide was an incredible resource that steered me towards spots where i could meet actual Italians and not just other tourists.
A big thank you to Let's Go!
Let's Go 2005 Italy (Let's Go Italy) .......2005-12-10
Hello,
I am very sad about this book. I expected better travel guide. It was nearly completely useless during our holiday. We have been in the north and middle part of Italy by car in this summer (2005). The maps of the cities were too small to easy understand it. The description of the cities were not satisfactory for us. The signs of the place of interest were right and the entrance prices were mainly correct. The book serves a broad choice of hotels, bars but you hardly find campsites in it. The bars and self service restaurants which are listed never signed in the maps. You get information from where and how you can go there but you don't know where you are exactly because of the poor maps.
I think there is better travel book on the marked but I have no any experience with that so I can't offer better choice yet.
I hope you will be luckier with any kind of Italian travel book like I.
Highly recommended.......2005-11-05
I bought this book as an addition to my long love - Lonely Planet. If you have to choose one of these two - choose Let's Go.
I loved the way each chapter is organized: from the practical information of arrival, accomodation and food, tourist info, local transport to the "juicy" information on what to do and where to do it.
Sights: this book gives general knowledge on all the big things to see in the big tourist citys (we went to Milan, Venice and Florence). Some of the attractions of the smaller places are not listed under "Sights", as expected, but under other categories like "Hiking", so don't be lazy and read all of the text!
Directions how to get to places were very simple and up-front. we never got lost using the directions in this book.
As expected from the written word - prices were a little old, but in no way off track - they gave us an excellent idea on how much we should have to pay.
Food recommendation: we only tried them at the end of the trip, but we regretted not doing that beforehand. The prices quoted in the book were very close to reality (considering the expected price raise), and the food was as promised.
Hotels: we did not try the recommendations, but one thing was missing in this book (as in the Lonely Planet). The hotels were devided by price, but no regard was made to the number of stars. This is crucial information since it gives you an idea of the quality of the hotel and the services it must provide. If this information was given in the book together with the price, you could get a feeling of "value for money".
Over all, I found this book very easy to handle. the information was extensive and up to date.
As I said - Highly reccomended. I Think I found a replacement for the "Lonely Planet" series.
Must Have on Your Travel to Italy.......2005-10-25
This book changed my perception of Let's Go books. My fiance swore by the Let's Go Rome book when he went to Italy in 2002. I am an avid fan of the DK's guidebooks b/c of their colorful photos and easy to read style. So we took 3 books with us: his old Let's Go Rome ( which was still very helpful), the DK's Italy and this book. We ended up using this one the most for hotel and restaurant info. which are very accurate and very helpful except for only one disappointment in Rome. The DK's book is great too for historical, architectural data and quick references. The same information with more interesting and sometimes quirky details are buried in the Let's Go Italy but they are very very good information .... so if you buy this book ....you need to read it well in order to appreciate the wealth of information in it.
Let's Go Series Never Fails You.......2005-10-07
As a seasoned traveller who's been visiting the world since the age of 17 (and I'm now 34), I'd like to share with you my input on the Let's Go series of travel guides. I won't bore you with a long speech. Simply put, I started using this guide when I was in high school, during summer break, 16 years old turned 17 on the day I arrived in Italy, and I've used it ever since. The insight contained in the Let's Go travel guides will always steer you in the right direction. Why, you ask? Because the Let's Go! series started off as college students (from Harvard, I think) going to Europe for the summer on a BUDGET (key word here). Upon their return, they decided to put in writing what they had experienced in the form of a handout for the benefit of other students who were interested in traveling abroad. They wrote about their experiences, where they found the best bargains and the most expensive places to stay, eat, shop. They also explained how to get around in that country, what the system of transportation is, how it works, where to get info, and whether or not the locals were friendly to Americans. Not only that, they even tell you straight up, regarding the hotels/hostels, which ones have a friendly staff or owners, and which ones are not nice at all.
The Let's Go travel books offer a lot more once you look through them, in terms of discounts, youth hostel cards information, brief historic overviews of cities, suggested itineraries for every interest (museums, archeologic sites, art history, political history, fashion, wine routes, etc.), and key phrases in the host country's language.
Of course, in my opinion all that stuff is secondary. What continues to be of paramount importance, to me at least, is that it is first and foremost a BUDGET gravel guide, and it tells me where I can sleep real cheap. That's the bottom line. And what's the best part of this series? That they issue a new edition every single year. That means that the information is always up to date (from the date of printing, because things can always change, of course), so hotel phone numbers and websites, as well as rates, are good-to-go.
This year I'm taking my new wife around Italy, and a month later we're going to Paris. The first thing I did, without a doubt, was buy Let's Go Italy 2005, and Let's Go France 2005. Sure, other guides may look prettier on their covers, but as the old adage says, you should never judge them based solely on their covers. It's what's on the inside that counts.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-07-09
Great help in preparing the itinerary for my Europe trip! Times and prices have changed since 2005 but the sites have not.
Great for low-budget travelling. Not very detailed........2007-02-18
This book worked very well for me for 3.5 months all over europe. It lacks some detail, which is a given for any book that covers this much ground. It's also a little too heavy while backpacking. I took the book and cut out some sections that I did not need before my trip to save weight. Then, after I left a country, I would throw out that specific section. The information was pretty accurate, apart from minor price changes. I would highly recommend getting alternate (and more detailed) maps for larger cities. This guide is clearly aimed at low budget travellers.

Customer Reviews:
A great travel guide.......2005-09-14
This guide directed me to some really great cheap lodgings and restaurants, and also gives a good explanation of travel options within Greece.
Terrible travel book!.......2005-08-17
I spent two wks in Europe with a different guide book (Rick Steve's) and found that book very helpful. Unfortunately, my two wks in Greece using "Let's Go" were terrible (so bad, in fact, that I tried unsuccessfully to get a flight home ten days early). I don't believe that the authors actually traveled to all the small island towns they described. The rates they reported for Evia and Andros Island were double what they really were (despite the fact that I used the 2005 edition for travel during July/Aug 2005), they described a town as "sprawling and modern" when it wasn't even close to that (it was described instead on a Greek website as "what Athens was 20yrs ago"--meaning NOT modern), maps were not detailed enough, and there wasn't a personal touch to the recs they made for hotels/restaurants (it seemed that they randomly chose a few places but did not try many places and then list the BEST options for the price--as Rick Steves did). In addition, they used overly extravagant, and thus, inaccurate, descriptions to describe the beaches. The beaches of the Andros/Evia islands have their own charm, but they are not "beautiful" (other than the clear water, the beaches are very small and often rocky). I suspect that the writers got a lot of their info from internet research rather than personal experience; or, their travel experiences may be so narrow that they have no points of comparison for their descriptions. In addition, this guide book was written solely by non-minority travelers; and though there is a small paragraph describing some Greeks' negative attitudes toward minorities, it significantly minimizes this. I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. and never have I experience the consistent, blantant racism that I did in Greece. To have no writers of ethnicity paints a narrow and inaccurate portrait of the serious problems of traveling through Greece as a person of ethnicity. In addition, I met other backpackers during my four wks of travel who also expressed disatisfaction/frustration with the "Let's Go" series of travel guides.
A HUGE Help.......2005-08-05
Let's Go 2005 Greece, was by far the best guide book that me and my father had brought with us to our recent 3 week trip to Greece. No matter where we went, we always had that book with us. I would actually rate this book a 4.9 if I could - since there are only a certain number of towns, hotels, restaurants, sights, bars, and other things that the writers can submit in to one single book - I found that there were so many other great things in Greece besides the things that they had listed. I had searched high and low for the best Greece guide so that my trip would be unforgetable - I ended up with this book and now that I'm back, I don't regret my choice at all! It was amazing!
For all of my future trips, I will look to Let's Go before any other guide book series!
(By the way, the things that they suggest are for all ages! I'm 17 and my dad is 57)

Best ever.......2005-10-17
Went to England with this guide book in hand, the insides marked out with places my husband and I wanted to visit --- sights, restaurants, shopping. Reviews were very detailed. With practically everything so expensive in Europe, this was a real godsend -- it led us to the best deals wherever in England we chose to go. Our hosts had just as much fun as we did, "discovering" new places, and telling themselves they'll definitely come back again. When we left, they asked us to leave the book with them. Need I say more?
Go UK!.......2005-09-17
You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.
Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet your exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.
Essential reading for students and seniors who travel.......2005-03-23
If you're visiting the U.K. and Ireland, especially on a shoestring budget, "Let's Go - Britain & Ireland 2005" is a great choice. It focuses on budget travel, plus cheap & free destinations. It's a superb resource for hostel reviews, and tells you exactly where the best pubs, clubs, and night spots are. If you're a student who enjoys travel, the "Let's Go" series is practically required reading.
Because this book covers so much territory (literally), don't expect as many details or as much advice as more specialized guides. If all you need is an overview and important travel tips, this is the one to buy.
Frankly, if your schedule is flexible and you have a little extra cash for touring, you can go to the U.K. and Ireland with just this book. Pick up tourist brochures for each area when you get there, and plan your day-by-day activities as you travel. Like many "Let's Go" guides, their Britain & Ireland 2005 guidebook makes travel fun and easy.
This book is an excellent reference for informal travel. It includes good maps, common sense advice, and the kinds of practical information in each chapter that can spare you hours of getting lost while looking for the bus stop or a place for a good, affordable lunch.
Oh, if you're traveling with small children or want a guidebook that reviews the better hotels and B&Bs, "Ireland for Dummies" is probably a better choice. But, if you favor hostels and want to eat where the locals do, this Let's Go guide is worth throwing into your backpack or suitcase as you head to the U.K. and Ireland.
I recommend "Let's Go - Britain and Ireland 2005" most for students and adventurous seniors, and this book will be in my own suitcase when I'm visiting the U.K. and Ireland.

the new 2005 edition.......2005-01-17
Just in response to one of the other reviews, I'd like to point out that they may refer to the 2004 edition of B&I. I am currently studying in Britain with the sexy new 2005 edition and I'm happy to report that, yes, the prices have been updated and, in the case of trains and buses, they tend to list the highest possible price so you may even find things cheaper than the guide says. There are guides with more extensive coverage, but none cover Britain with nearly as much style: if anything, this is certainly the coolest of the Britain travel guides.
Helpful guide for your trip.......2004-09-16
I used this book to plan a trip originating in London, then traveling to Dublin amd finally to Galway. This book was very helpful in the planning stage of the trip. It definitely made the trip a lot smoother and less expensive. It includes maps, advice, and other information to give you ideas on accomodation, dining and sights to see. I recommend it.

Great for certain things.......2005-03-22
This guide blows my other's out of the water on one thing: where to eat and sleep for cheap. Its recconmendations on nice, independent and cheap hostels and places to eat are the best, hands down. Way better than Lonely Planet or Rough Guides. The guide is a bit "Eastern Europe Lite" on most things as it crams in a ton of countries and cities but, nevertheless, it is worth buying soley for the accomodations section.
this guide is fabulous!.......2005-02-04
this book is about a million times better than other books out there about the same region. it's way more recetly updated, the info is thorough and reliable, and the writing is funny & fun to read. i recommend it to anyone traveling to eastern europe--tossing this book into your backpack is totally worth the extra weight.
good coverage, esp. former soviet areas.......2005-01-14
This guide is pretty solid, I've seen last year's edition too and this one is even better in terms of coverage. The Russia/Ukraine/Baltics material is esp helpful as compared to competing guides.

Helpful.......2005-08-01
I found this book to be very helpful overall. It gave lots of details and little things that most tourists might not have looked for. Its only lacking was that some of the 'daytrips' didn't have a lot of detail or maps.
Great book to take with you on your trip.......2005-05-03
I recently went to London for a week and I took this book with me. I don't know what I would have done without it. It's full of great info from cover to cover and well organized. It was almost like having my own personal tour guide!
If You Buy Only One Tour Book For London..........2005-01-04
I've perused dozens of travel books on Great Britain and London in particular. I especially like the "Eyewitness" books by DK but the "Let's Go 2005" is hands down the most inclusive, user-friendly book I've found. I've actually read it from cover to cover because it's so useful. The maps are helpful but the best parts are the descriptions of hotels/sights/restaurants. I really appreciate the web addresses provided for most of the items (so I could access the sites to see what exhibits will be in the museums, check out restaurant's menus, etc.) This is the book I'm taking with me to London next month.

Spanish.......2005-10-14
I am enjoing to read the guide, but the English the author used is little hard for me, like high level words, no just dayly ones.
Of course I prefer in my own lenguage, I mean Spanish.
Thank you.

Go Away Hotels & Restaurants, Bring Back Hostels & Towns.......2005-04-12
As each new yearly edition emerges from the Let's Go camp more and more less popular towns (but still sensational must visit places) vanish from this once great collection of facts and information. They are being squeezed out to make way for an expanded hotel and restaurant scene something of which backpackers can not afford to patronise nor want to. More supermarket addresses instead would be beneficial. Sure some tourists eat at these places and spend hundreds of dollars a night for somewhere to sleep away from other travellers but these rich or short holiday travellers are not what Let's Go's roots were all about. Let's Go was originally a backpacker book which provided a comprehensive list of backpacker hostels in most large cities and small towns throughout the Europe (for the Europe edition) along with basic information on what there was to see or attract you to stop there. Now most of those small towns are gone.
Nottingham, England (where Robin Hood hang out), Titisee and Schluchsee in the Black Forrest Germany are gone from previous years. Freiburg is not the Black Forrest experience, just the nearest big city but Let's Go will have you believe it is. All Northern Ireland now lists are Belfast and Causeway Coast. What about Londonderry (Derry) the only medieval walled city on the island of the Republic of and Northern Ireland.
What is going on with hostel listings? Each year more and more of them disappear. I know of at least 21 backpacker hostels in Dublin yet Let's Go lists only 6 and some towns do not even have a hostel listing even though there are hostels there. This means backpackers may not go somewhere at all out of fear there is nowhere to stay which is not the case. Pisa, Italy has no hostel listings when the Centro Turistico Madonna dell' Acqua Hostel a short walk from the famous leaning one (can be found at V. Pietrasantina 15). Inverness, Scotland has only one hostel listed, I know of 7. Either the quality of staff in the research department has gone downhill or hostels now have to pay to be listed. If this is the case it should be mentioned before each city's hostel listings so the unsuspecting reader who thinks they are getting unbiased coverage is aware.
Lauterbrunnen probably the best nature town in Switzerland (surrounded by numerous waterfalls and the Alps) was listed but has also disappeared. It is sad to think some people (who only go where their guide book takes them) may go to Europe, backpack for a few months and only find out when they meet other backpackers that they missed out on a gem of an experience. What will Let's Go 2015 contain just London, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and a few other cities?
If you've never been to Europe then this book will be of some benefit to you but due to lack of coverage if you're planning on visiting the real Europe you'll have to research elsewhere as well. Get a second hand edition from the late 90's if you can instead. Let's Go needs to rediscover its roots. granted it is still one of the leaders in this market but if the five star tourist market is profitable then why not have two editions, one for backpackers with more towns and hostels and one for the hotel, fine dining traveller market.
Europe on the cheap..........2005-04-01
Let's Go is THE guidebook for cheap traveling, especially for students. It's secret? It's written by students, mainly for students...It's strength is that it has a lot of truly budget accomodations listed -- hostels, etc. -- in practically every city in Europe. The main weakness? Because it is put together by students, who by definition are amateurs, the writing can sometimes be weak, the info can be out of date or wrong, and the reviews of lodging and sights are incredibly uneven. (For example, when I used Let's Go almost exclusively for a 3-month Europe trip, some of their $10-25/night budget accomodations listed were fantastic -- but others were dumps unworthy of a listing in any guidebook). The problem is that, unlike a Lonely Planet or a Rick Steves guidebook, which are written by professionals, Let's Go has had hundreds of writers over the years, with students writing about one country but not all the others...If you are unlucky enough to go to a country reviewed by Mountain Man Jack, for example, and he doesn't care about a lack of air conditioning, lumpy beds and smelly rooms, and fails to mention these items, you are out of luck. All in all, though, a great resource for people who need truly budget accomodations, with lots of good maps and other tips... I've personally outgrown this guidebook, having moved on to Rick Steves, who focuses not on the cheapest possible budget but on getting the most possible out of your trip...($50-$100 day vs. the $25-$50 that Let's Go specializes in).
Definitely for Students.......2005-03-25
This series is specifically (and explicitly, might I add) designed for students and others on a budget - its also written by students so I trust the information will be to my specs - the best budget guidebook out there. Also gives good tips on highlights and nightlife.
For backpacking travelers who really can't afford Europe.......2005-01-30
If you are a student, teenager, or a twenty something looking to find yourself by backpacking across Europe on extremely limited funds, this book will fill you in on every cheap dump and campsite in Europe. It will also show you how to eat and be entertained and how to travel through Europe as cheeply as possible. However, if you would actually like to stay in a hotel without having to share a bathroom with everyone else on the floor, this book is completely useless. If you actually don't mind paying a fair price for a great meal in some of the best eateries on the planet, this book is completely useless.
In other words, unless you are a young person who is traveling through Europe without enough money to pay for it, this book is COMPLETELY USELESS.
