VERY out of date information--stay away.......2007-08-19
In August 2007, I bought this book for my honeymoon in Vancouver Island. We hiked two of the hikes listed. One was completely impossible to locate based on the details given: completely incorrect street names (three incorrect street names). We ended up asking at a gas station and were given new street names to locate trailhead and different directions. The other hike was badly misrepresented, with trail names marked differently than the book indicated. A guidebook should guide the hiker; I personally think the author and publisher should be embarrassed to sell this title.
Best Vancouver Island Hiking Trails.......2007-02-10
I highly recommend this hiking trail guide book and I've been hiking and leading guided nature hiking tours of Vancouver Island for the last 12 years. The trails are a selection of the best ones for each area and not just some boring logging road. The descriptions are detailed, clear and accurate and the maps are great. Windstorms and logging activity can affect trails as the years go by so be sure to check with locals for current information about roads and trails.
good resource.......2006-10-04
I found this guide book really helpful and i definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to do multiple hikes on the island. Enjoy your trip!

Best resource we had with us!.......2004-03-20
This book was wonderful -- we did a trip along the Yellowhead using it to direct us to lodging and the "hidden" best places -- and the only time we went wrong on our trip was when we didn't consult the book. We're planning another trip this year, because we didn't get to all the places the book directed us to.
BTW -- Louise's Kitchen in Smithers has what may arguably be the best food in Western Canada!
Some things should remain hidden.......2003-07-28
We just returned from a trip to BC where we used this book in conjunction with others. Some of the information is useful, but time and time again we were disappointed, especially in the area of lodging. Several B&Bs and Lodges that were given very positive reviews were either very ordinary, motelish or were just plain dreadful. There is a good reason why these are hidden, and should remain so.

Disappointed.......2006-08-17
While this book does cover many hikes in and around Whistler, some basic features of a hiking book were missing. First, maps for some hikes were missing, and were inadequate for other hikes. Some hikes, such as the Ancient Cedars Trail, had no directions to the start of the hike. Also, there was no overview map that pinpointed the hike locations. I would not recommend this book.
A top pick for destination-bound visitors.......2006-03-04
Jack Christie is a Tourism B.C. Media Award winner and a long-time travel writer who is especially passionate about British Columbia, so it's no surprise a wonderful guide to the wilderness area of Whistler comes from his experienced hand. From hiking and snow sports to fishing, rafting and nature viewing, here are trail highlights, maps, photos, and all the access information you'll need to enjoy the Whistler region of British Columbia. Activities for active adults and kids alike make The Whistler Book An All-Season Outdoor Guide a top pick for destination-bound visitors.
A must have for anyone going to whistler.......2005-06-02
I ordered this book a few weeks before I took my family to whistler and was glad I did. There was a plethora of information in there that only somebody familiar with the whistler area would know about. I booked my vacation online at http://www.whistler.com and it was great to know what kind of activities where available before reserving them over the phone with the reservation agents (although their website is very informative also). Once there I found the printed maps from the book to be indispensable in navigating whistler's extensive valley trail system. I would have liked to see more information on all of the whistler golf courses but all-in-all this book made my first whistler vacation an experience to remember. I am definitely going back in the winter season to ski whistler.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific.......2007-09-01
This is probably the best organized and informative kayaking/travel book I own. The large area maps are coupled with more detailed local maps to provide enough context and continuity. I am travelling to the Clayoqot area for several days of solo paddling, and this book provided ample helpful information.
A very useful book, and I'll consider the others in the series, now.
One minor quibble is that the book is color coded (which is good), but the matching "breakout" trip descriptions are printed in colors to match the section. Yellow-on-white is nearly impossible to read.
A beautiful and beautifully organized book.......2007-05-07
While I haven't yet used this book in the field, I have found it to be really good for planning my upcoming trip. It has lots of the right kind of information to help better anticipate what to expect and how to be prepared. The organization is great as are the illustrations/graphics, and I can say this having written a guidebook of my own (Paddling Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks). I look forward to the east coast edition coming out this summer.
excellent book for kayak trip planning.......2006-08-23
this book is well written and researched and really made me want to change my up coming plan for day trips on the west coastof VI by kayak and instead spend a week doing so..camping along the way -
oh well next trip -
very handy book for planning such an excursion

One Helpful Guide For Cruising The Inside Passage.......2006-12-26
This book is great for those who want to cruise to Alaska in a small boat or just enjoy cruising around islands in the Inside Passage. It is full of tips, lists, and local insight from someone that has made the trip several times. I was glad to know small boats can make the trip to Alaska if you are careful. Besides this book I suggest anyone planning to make a trip like this take the piloting classes offered by the United States Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary to learn more about using charts, and GPS.
Surprise, Surprise.......2006-02-03
I am disappointed that the editorial review did not indicate that this book is actually an evangelical platform for a born-again Christian. Mr. Petersen averages some discourse on his God and his faith about every 5 pages. There are 38 "God" citations in the index.
Had I known that the voyage was to serve as his "Sermon on the Inside Passage", I would not have purchased the book.
dream of a lifetime.......2000-12-31
I found Day By Day to be compelling reading as I share the same love and awe of nature as Mr. Petersen and his family. We enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Juneau and Glacier Bay some years ago. The observations of these areas in the book were particularly interesting to me. To experience Glacier Bay cruising alone in a small boat was truly an awesome feat. The book describes the wild life viewed in detail indicating how to keep oneself safe while viewing bears, etc.
Tips on fishing these beautiful waters also were of interest. The catching of about every game fish, crabs, and digging clams was included in the book. This book is also a guide to great places to eat along the way, on land sights not to be missed, hot springs for bathing and best places to anchor.
To anyone owning a boat, the mechanical problems described and how they were corrected would be very helpful. Also, a novice would find invaluable the detailed descriptions of tides, times to avoid certain waters and highlights of the many inlets and coves he explored and which are named in the book.
There are numerous instances of protection and guidance as the result of his leaning on the almighty and trusting in God's care.
To read this book is a must for anyone contemplating cruising these waters and it would be a valuable companion on one's trip.
