Book Description

Completely updated for 2007, Frommer's Walt Disney World & Orlando is the perfect trip-planner for America's #1 vacation destination— Disney World. A total of 16.2 million people visited the Magic Kingdom—the world’s top theme park—in 2005, according to Amusement Business magazine. Epcot attracted 9.9 million visitors, Disney–MGM saw an attendance of 8.6 million, and Animal Kingdom racked up 8.2 million visitors.

This book will cover all of the highlights of the city, including the opening of Disney's latest thrill ride, Expedition Everest. It also features detailed itineraries for all of the Disney and Universal Orlando theme parks.

The guide also includes info on Cypress Gardens adventure park, Busch Gardens, and Disney's newly revamped ticket structure. You'll also find individual park maps, up-to-date advice on finding the best package deals, and a free color fold-out map.

5 out of 5 stars We found this book to be a great resource!.......2007-01-15

My husband & I went to Orlando for the first time over Xmas 2006. This book really gave great information and suggestions for our time there. We enjoyed the restuants that they recommended and great reviews of the parks (what to see & what to skip) were very helpful!

3 out of 5 stars Not for the Disney Fanatic.......2006-11-06

This book is what it states: an excellent tool for learning about any of the new or newly rehabbed rides and shows at Disney world and several other Orlando area parks. It's as up to date as the books press time would allow and the maps of the parks are decent if not totally encompassing. This is not the book to get if your debating on where to stay on the Disney property as the hotel descriptions are extremely brief. You're likely better off cruising the web with as many informative web sites as fellow Disney fanatics have created out there.

My biggest complaint with the book is that this author doesn't actually seem to like Disney World. From the tone of her writing maybe she just OD'd on too much Disney, stood in one too many lines, heard one too many crying children in her quest for Disney detail-whatever. If I'm buying a book about a place I'm going to on vacation, I want to feel happy and excited about the place...and I definitely didn't get that feeling from this author I'm sorry to say.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for your Disney World Trip!.......2006-09-30

This book is very detailed and gives you information on everything in Disney World and the surrounding theme parks (including a very detailed map!). From the prices and what to expect at the restaurants to very detailed descriptions of the rides including age recommendations.
Compared to other Walt Disney World guide books (and believe me I own them all) this one is above and beyond the best available.
I am an obsessive planner and this book has all the information I need to plan a wonderful Disney vacation.
Very highly recommended!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SO MUCH great information!.......2007-03-29

I know some people criticize Frommer's for being "negative," but to me, they're just doing their job--alerting you about the good and bad of travel destinations, and EVERY one of them has some bad. I don't think it's "negative" to mention that if you visit certain areas of a particular city after dark you should use the lighted, public parking lots instead of parking on the streets because of problems with break-ins and muggings. That's simply fulfilling their responsibility to their readers.

At any rate, I bought this guide in preparation for a trip to Tampa. I had no idea how much there was to do in that part of Florida until I started looking through this guide. It steered us to the Big Cat Rescue facility (NOT to be missed if you love wild cats), the free manatee viewing by the TECO plant and the car museum in Sarasota to name a few. Also got some great restaurant ideas and general information about the area.

    2 out of 5 stars Let's be nice.......2004-11-10

I work and travel to Miami. I think the book
is a good guide but is insulting to adults.
In the night life section, it is o.k. to be gay
or lesbian but when you are an older adult the
author will dog you and tell you that it is past
your bed time for a good Latin music club. Hey,
    be nice and "inclusive."

5 out of 5 stars Better than Gremlins and better than E.T.!!!.......2003-09-18

Well, not really, but i've lived in south florida for 13 years and this book is a must have for anyone who lives down here or is thinking about visiting. Everyone thinks they have a true grasp of the miami scene, but this author actually does.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and Enjoyable writing style sets this guide apart........2003-01-05

Tourism generates over {$$$$} billion annually for the Florida economy, which is more than twice the entire GNP for Cuba. That is why there is a fierce fight for the Florida travel guide market. Frommer's is one of the best guides available.

This South Florida guide is somewhat more expanded than "Frommer's Florida" Guide (see my review). If you are going to visit just MIAMI, the EVERGLADES, PALM BEACH, FT. LAUDERDALE or the KEYS, then you will find this guide more compact, lighter and a bit cheaper.

The same great writing style that is in the Frommer's state guide is found in this more compact companion. The accommodation and dining recommendations are reliable and on the money. This guide lists the best restaurants that South Florida has to offer. A lodging and restaurant index would be a definite plus for this guide. As it stands now, if you have a restaurant you want to look up, you have to go through all the listings in the city you are in until you stumble across the name you seek or miss seeing it completely.

The rating system is labored and difficult to understand. The explanation of the "new star rating system" is buried in the book and not indexed. It was by quirk that I found it. Strange.

The Internet web site addresses provided for hotels could be more comprehensive considering that this is a 2003 guide. In today's world of "connectivity" you can visit the hotel sites and see the accommodations and rates prior to making reservations. And, website/email addresses are restricted to the lodging listings even though many of the restaurants now have their own websites with photos and menus and email to makes reservations.

However, there are two significant areas in this guide that could use improvement: maps and hotels/restaurants.

Regarding the maps: the maps in the guide are lackluster. More and better maps would greatly help the user.

What put this guide on top of the competing guides is the clear and enjoyable writing style of the review. The introductions of the regional areas are the best of the guides I reviewed. You will do well if you have to chose just one South Florida guide and you select Frommer's.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guidebook Ever!.......2002-11-01

This is probably the best guidebook I ever read. The author has a really good writing style and it is genuinely interesting and fun to read (not that I'm suggesting you pick it over Fitzgerald or anything, just that it's a really well-written book). Her restaurant reviews are really excellent--just reading some of them made me start to drool. And while many of the restaurant listings are for priceyish places, she does list some great, fun, authentic, and in some cases, way off the beaten track yummy places to try. I trust her opinion completely!

This is a really thorough guidebook, with good and honest hotel listings (one of the only people to vocalize what we all know--the Delano IS overrated!) and a great chapter on what to do and see if you want to do and see more than just the beaches of South Florida. The Miami coverage is awesome-- good tips on shopping, a really knowledgeable chapter on nighlife, and more.

The Everglades chapter has a hilarious essay about how the author was reluctant to go the first time, and the coverage of the Keys, Palm Beaches, Boca, etc. are just as good. I usually expect a Frommer's guidebook to be a bit stuffier than this, but as soon as I read the intro, I knew I had to try this book, and I'm so happy I did. You will be too. It rocks!

5 out of 5 stars South Florida exposed.......2002-09-28

Wow. I used to think that South Florida just meant Miami and palm trees. This book proved to me and my husband that South Florida is much, much more. I got the book on a bet with my husband, who insisted that So Flo was a lot of fun and not just laying out at a pool kind of fun. This book proved me wrong and I lost the bet, but boy was I glad to be a loser in this wager! This book is a must have for anyone who thinks that a trip to Florida can be hot and boring. Quite the contrary!! Thanks, Frommer's. We'll be back to So Flo very soon.

This is my third DisneyWorld guide. I get one each time to brush up and find out what is new. I liked this one. It gave a general description of rides and dining options. I especially liked that the author gave some input about the dining establishments.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book once we booked our 1st Family Disney Vacation! We will be visiting with a 2 and a 5 year old, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed! This book is helping me plan our days and gives FANTASTIC recommendations! From what restaurants serve chicken fingers (!) to height restrictions on rides...I feel extremely well-prepared for our trip!!

I had many doubts about going to WDW with a 5 year-old kid. Not only did the book help me plan but also it pointed out some other aspects that I had not considered before reading it. Not to mention that the way it was written makes the reading a pleasure. I simply loved it.

2 out of 5 stars Please don't waste your money.......2006-11-20

A couple of weeks ago I received the new edition of this Irreverent guide, and I am sorry to tell you that it was a waste of money! Yes, it has pages listing restaurants, hotels, attractions etc. but with no real detail. A thin book that is also thin on information.

My advice for a Disney trip - buy the Unofficial Disney guide, a much more comprehensive guide, packed with helpful advice and information.

5 out of 5 stars Note From the current author.......2004-12-17

Please read the previous reviews with the knowledge that they are actually for the last edition of the book, written by other authors. I have lived practically next to WDW for over 10 years and I have corrected many of the oversights from the previous editions. If you have read the book since its release in September, I encourage you to post a review. Thanks!

    Hi folks!
Once again Frommer's was a life-saver for me and my family. This is the third trip (two to Europe) that we take using all the information provided in Frommer's travel guides.

All the tips and information were most reliable and we were able to do much before having planned our outings according to the book.
    I strongly recommend it!

This lively guide lives up to its title by page 5, when it poses the question, "What do Viagra and Walt Disney World have in common?" (Answer: you have to wait an hour for a two-minute ride. B-dum-bum.) Savvy authors Diane Bair and Pamela Wright amuse and inform as they deliver the lowdown on where to see Mickey M. in "person," dump your sullen teens for a few hours, or book a much-needed "serenity massage" after a long day of toddler-wrangling. Handily divided into sections covering accommodations, dining, diversions, and so forth, this wry tome leaves no stone unturned or bloated cartoon character unpunctured. Perhaps most valuable is the flinty, no-nonsense analysis of the various themed Disney hotels--which ones appeal to children, which to adults, and which are best avoided altogether. And if you have any energy left after the Magic Kingdom spits you out, you'll also find info on the Orlando area's other attractions--can you really afford to miss Gatorland? --Rebecca Gleason

      Book Description

For readers who are tired of the promotional fluff and brochure-speak that characterizes most travel guides, heres a fresh voice. The Irreverent Guides offer an insiders look at each destination, and take a fun, honest look at everything they review. Its not every day you open up a guidebook to find categories like:*Most overrated museums*Weirdest bunch of public statuary*Bars where you can hear yourself think*Where the supermodels eat and where they dont*Eurotrashiest hotels*Hotels for people who hate conventioneers*Luscious love nests and lavender lodgings*Restaurants that dont live up to the hype*Swingin supper clubs with attitudeThe Irreverents give you the lowdown, the inside story. They have nothing to sell but the truth, which includes a balance of good and bad. They praise, they trash, they weigh, and leave the final decision up to the reader. Our writers take a special pleasure in leading you where other guides fear to tread.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2004-01-13

It is true that this reveiwer seemed to hate all things Disney and prefered the other Orlando area attractions. This book would be fine if I was looking for information on other area attractions, but I bought the book for information on WDW.

The information they did provide on WDW was out of date. The book was published in 2002; however they talk about visiting Discovery Island (closed in 1999), River Country (closed 2001?), the Skyway (closed 1999), etc.

I was so disappointed in this book. I am a true Disney fan and I was looking for an unbiased opinion of Disney World, what I got was useless information about WDW and alot of information on why I shouldn't go to WDW.

      1 out of 5 stars Simply Awful.......2002-02-12

      ...

Since most of the guides don't change much from year to year, I bought 2 new books for this trip... The Irreverent Guide and the Unoffical Guide by Bob Sehlinger. For extra money, the Unofficial Guide offers a whopping 524 more pages (768 vs. 244).

Both books offer the same "take" on WDW... An impartial, tell it like it is account of the happiest place on earth. The Unofficial Guide not only offers it's opinion, but almost always also offers reader comments about the various attractions/resorts/restuarants. The Unoffical Guide is also organized MUCH more efficiently, and it is very easy to go back and find information even without using the index. The Irreverent Guide is a mess that even an index doesn't help. The Irreverent guide also has some glaring errors; for example, it "reviews" both Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and Dream Flight. IIRC, Buzz took over Dream Flight's space.

The key reason that I bought the Irreverent Guide was for the actual irreverence...which doesn't really exist.

In a nutshell, this is the worst WDW Guide that I have ever purchased...and then has a terrible price vs. content ration on top of it.

4 out of 5 stars A refreshing change from the usual Disney ..........2001-02-08

If you want to read the same old sugary sweet... about Disney, buy another guide book. The title says it all- irreverent. If you don't want to hear the negative things, don't buy the book. Contrary to the other reviews of this book, I really enjoyed it. It was helpful, hilarious, and a breath of fresh air. I used 3 other guide books for my trip which all gave the same exact info. This book gives you the real goods. I planned a very short stop-over in Orlando, and quite frankly the thought of trying to prioritize which of the hundreds of attractions to check out made me ill. Not only that, but I didn't want to waste my hard earned money only to be disappointed. Let's face it, Disney and Orlando are not cheap. This book let me know what to expect and helped me to make informed decisions. I never buy just one guide book- this was definitely a good supplement. I plan on seeing if there is an irreverent guide available for my next destination.

      1 out of 5 stars Too irreverent.......2000-11-14

I am always dubious when a book contains as many typographical errors and misspellings as this one does. Sea World's coaster is Kraken, not "Kracken" and the ride at Disney MGM is the Tower of Terror not "Twilight Zone of Terror." When you see this you have to ask whether the writer and editor fully understand (or care about) what they are writing about.

The title is a misnomer -- this book contains nearly as much information about the nearby Universal parks as it is about Walt Disney World. Not a bad thing, but if you do not plan to visit Universal (we didn't) much of the content here will be useless to you.

I give it a star because there are a few more insider tips than you'd find in an article in the travel section of your Sunday newspaper and some of them are refreshingly negative -- I do appreciate it when a travel writer comes out and tells us when she thinks something is bad. The phone numbers are well organized. Some of the restaurant recommendations were great.

Overall, however, the text is poorly organized, sometimes repeating information you just read in an earlier chapter. For the most part, the author seems to favor cute puns over information you can actually use. After reading "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, 2001," this was a huge disappointment.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Information.......2002-10-04

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a really budget book. It's definitely not. In fact, the $70 is really $140 per day PER COUPLE, since they're assuming you're travelling with somebody else. If you're looking for BARGAIN BASEMENT prices, go with another book. However, if you're looking for reasonable though still up-to-par (a huge step above rock-bottom) accommodations and dining, this is a great book to use in Florida. The chapters written by Lesley Abravanel are particularly well-written and fun. The ones by Bill Goodwin are really great on budget options and suggestions, but are lacking personality. The third authors are for Disney. Overall, I'd recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome buy for locals and visitors alike........2002-08-30

I like in Florida and I bought this book to help me find the cool spots to take my friends when they visit. The "super cheap eats" and "cheap sleeps" sections have wonderful recommendations for delicious food and more than comfortable accommadations. There are also "worth a splurge" sections so you know if you want to spend a lot you'll get your money's worth, not some overpriced stuck up establishment with bad service. The guide gives you the inside scoop on hiddle local favorite hangouts and eateries and where to find the most authentic ethnic food at the cheapest price. Each location described even has a section where the book details "Fun Things to do for free (or almost) in " I use this book constantly and LOVE it 100%!
