Accessibly written to help you navigate throughout the country without missing a thing, each attraction includes exact admission prices, what galleries and museums not to miss, and where to stop for quick bites and refreshing drinks along the way. Sights are also rated for their

“walkability”,
“historic and cultural interest”, plus we suggest fantastic
“photo stops” and entertaining and age-appropriate
“kid-friendly” attractions throughout the book.
What to Do?
Our

difficult to use.......2007-06-18
I bought this guide to Barcelona because the Fodor's Guide to France was so wonderful. Unfortunately, Fodor's got it wrong with this particular format of city guide. The guide is organized by activity (one section for "shopping" one for "hotels" one for "things to see" one for restaurants, etc.) and the corresponding maps are not intuitively placed throughout the book, either. This translates into a lot of furious page-flipping as you try to discern which sites, restaurants, etc., are where. Luckily Barcelona is so jam-packed with fabulous things to see, we eventually stopped using the guide in favor of just wandering and seeing whatever we happened to cross paths with. Two things I did like about this book, however, were that each of the major sites has its own mini-chapter, and that the book provides helpful walking tours of a couple of the major tourist areas. But unless you're willing to put in a significant amount of time learning how to use this book before you hit the pavement, and memorizing which map corresponds to which page, I suggest using a different guide.
Disorganized.......2006-08-06
"Who's going to go to a restaurant that's 5km away from them?"
A typical exclamation from a user of this guide. Unfortunately, bars, restaurants and other places are organized alphabetically, rather than by area, so if you're doing a search for a restaurant near where you are, good luck. This guide does not make such a typical query easy. Thumbs down.
the perfect guide.......2006-05-04
I traveled throughout Spain and France over the fall and took the Barcelona, Spain and Paris guides with me everywhere I went. None of them are too big to carry in a purse or a backpack. The history is so well-written and informative, but it's not overwhelming like other travel guides can be. There are tons of pictures and I loved that they give "city walks" for you to do. Perfect little three mile walks around the city that loop you past tons of landmarks and interesting shops and restaurants. As a student, I was on a bit of a budget and it was super helpful to have the exact prices AND hours listed with each activity.
I bought the See It: Italy guide for a couple friends and they loved it. This series is seriously the best.

A pocket-format, affordable guide, concentrating on a mix of specifically gay-related topics and mainstream subjects together with areas where gay travelers have specific requirements or need extra advice.
Book Description
Whether travelers are planning their break to Barcelona in advance or want instant guidance
as they explore, Cadogan is the ideal companion. Barcelona's buzzing nightlife, tapas bars and restaurants come immediately into view with Cadogan's extensive, selective listings, and the sights and attractions are treated with refreshingly honest, well-informed, and deeply fascinating descriptions. Cadogan will take readers on a tour of Gaudí's revolutionary architecture; to the beach or a football match; around the Picasso Museum and Miró Foundation; and to the best tapas in town. Complete with cross-referenced maps that feature clearly all the listings and attractions, Cadogan's Barcelona is the only essential item of luggage.

Best tourist guide to Barcelona.......2007-09-06
Easy to use format, many useful maps. Information is broken down by neighborhood. The writing is very fresh and incisive. Judgmental, too, which is what I want in a guide book -- it gives you an opinion (sometimes) as to whether or not a museum or other site is worth visiting. Hotel listings are a bit skimpy and, in my edition, out of date, but I have other books for that.
Book Description
You'll never fall into the tourist traps when you travel with Frommer's. It's like having a friend show you around, taking you to the places locals like best. Our expert authors have already gone everywhere you might go -- they've done the legwork for you, and they're not afraid to tell it like it is, saving you time and money. No other series offers candid reviews of so many hotels and restaurants in all price ranges. Every Frommer's Travel Guide is up-to-date, with exact prices for everything, dozens of color maps, and exciting coverage of sports, shopping, and nightlife. You'd be lost without us!
This brand-new edition of Frommer's Barcelona, Mardrid & Seville is the definitive guide to the three premier cities of Spain. From sophisticated Barcelona, with the wild modernist architecture of Gaud, the astounding Picasso Museum, and the colorful street life of La Rambla, we journey to the nation's capital for a taste of Madrid's tapas bars, incredible nightlife, and of course the artistic treasures of the Prado. And last but not least, we cover Seville, perhaps the most romantic and evocative destination in Spain. It's all done with the trademark Frommer's attention to style, accuracy, and detail.

Excellent for the holy trinity of Spanish cities.......2004-10-02
If you are going to vacation on a trip that includes all 3, or even 2 of these cities, then this is definitely an excellent book for a starting point, and may be the only book you need. You can get other books that cover each city individually in detail, which are helpful is spending more time in each city, but this Frommers book will give you enough material to fill 3 days in each city without needing another reference (the Time Out Guides are the best for nightlife). Frommers "Best Choices" are always worth referring to, best hotels, best restaurants, best experiences, etc.. No pictures, only a few maps, but great descriptions and advice.
Be careful of what you write.......2004-07-18
Frommer's is an excellent guidebook (though I personally like Lonely Planet and DK, Frommer's is a solid 3). Some of the reviews I read have been negative, and it seems to be somewhat misplaced towards the guidebook.
I can understand that not finding a laundry is frustrating. But if that is your only gripe with it, why not leave it at that? It seems to me that any problems you may have with rude hosts is more of a personailty clash than anything a guidebook could help with.
Honestly, although not perfect, we found this book a more than adequate starting point for our Spanish adventure. My advice: Rate the book on it's own merits, and your vacation on your planning. The two should stay seperate.
All in all, I believe that this book, along with DK's line of books, are a good pick for info on a trip to these beautiful cities.
A good summary of three key places to visit in Spain.......2003-11-07
Not wanting to lug around a tome covering all of Spain, and not wanting to purchase separate city guides for each of the places I intended to visit, I found this book to be a great compromise (since it covered three of the places I intended to visit). The book gives detailed critical reviews of hotels and restaurants, and points you to the most important sites in each area (with one walking tour of each and detailed information about various sites). This is a great book if you're planning to spend 1-3 days in one or more of these areas. It even gives travel information for places to visit surrounding each area (for example, offering a guide to Toledo, near Madrid). Overall, I was very pleased, especially considering the reasonable price. One warning, however, is that some of the maps (and the placement of items on those maps) are inaccurate.
All Alone in Barcelona.......2001-07-26
While traveling through Europe, my husband and I decided to visit Barcelona. Since it was the only country we had not researched before we left, we decided we better pick up Frommer's guide. To our dismay, most of the information in it was inaccurate or misinforming. For example, the street the laundry was listed on was misspelled. When we finally found it (in the pouring rain) it was a laundry service, not self-serve. So there was 2 hours of "dead time" not to mention paying 3 times as much money for getting our clothes cleaned.
The silver lining I guess was that the laundry lady was one of the 3 nice Spanish people we met during our 6 day visit. I wish that Frommer's would have given us some forewarning on Spanish culture and rudeness. Even the service people in our 4 star hotel were grumpy. Everyone seems to need either a fiesta or a siesta.
On our final night in Barcelona, we counted our change and had just enough money to catch the metro and attend a Spanish dance. Upon our arrival (late because the directions were fuzzy) we found that both the time and the amount listed were incorrect. We then found out that the metro closes down earlier than the book states, so we got to spend our last pasettas on a cab ride back to our hotel. When I got back I was so aggravated that I could have started a bonfire with it.
There were several other ommissions and inaccuracies that we ran across but all in all my final straw was when I contacted Frommers online for a refund and read that they do not offer refunds--I needed to contact the point of purchase. No wonder it was the only English guide book left in Germany-nobody wanted it!
I learned a lot of things from our European excursion. One of the best I can tell you is use Lonely Planet guides! And visit the information station at the airport-they may not be friendly but at least their brochures are helpful!

Customer Reviews:
Not for all budgets!.......2004-04-21
Although this book seems to provide an adequate overview of the areas it covers, the pricing system does not include budget travelers. I was appalled to see that it listed only expensive hotels for one of my destinations and not one of the less expensive peniones. Fortunately, I found enough information on websites to locate some REAL BUDGET accomodations. I am not referring to camping or staying in someone's home. No. I mean centrally located places to stay with full baths, TV, AC, etc. for a half (or less) of Fodor's cheapest hotel option. Fodor's seems to cater to a wealthier traveler, and that is fine. Just don't tell me it is a "guide for all budgets." I'll never buy one of these books again.
Excellent Guide!.......2003-09-16
This book is great for anyone who wants to focus their trip in Barcelona but still take some side trips outside of the city. The book made it easy for us to decide what we wanted to see, and then to find our way around the city. Directions and tips on how to get places were much appreciated, esp in some of those areas with tiny twisted streets. The history and background information was informative (esp since we don't speak Spanish) and surprisingly fun to read. We weren't sure where to go out of the city, so we just followed the guide. It leads you from Barcelona to Bilbao along the Costa Brava, which is gorgeous. There's just enough information about the seaside villages along the way to help you decide where to stop, eat and stay. We let the book really shape our trip- and it turned out to be a great one!

Okay, but needs to be updated.......2007-10-16
This book definitely needs to be updated. I was able to use it for general information, but when it came to actually getting around and practical advice for restaurants, hotels, etc., I found the Top Ten guide much more helpful. In retrospect, I would not have purchased this book.
Not bad for a first-time traveller, but needs to be updated!.......2007-09-21
I've always found LP guidebooks helpful - they fit our budget, have an interesting range of suggestions for sights to see, and are usually dead-on with descriptions. This was the first one that let us down on our travels. It is very frustrating for two people new to a city to make their way, starving at 3 pm, to a "highly recommended" restaurant and find it no longer in business. And this happened to us thrice! Two restaurants had closed down, and one had changed name and ownership. We had also taken DK's Real City Barcelona guide, and this was much more useful. Its choices were affordable (look for the check mark next to the listing that indicates a good deal), diverse and filled with locals - always a positive sign.
I did still use Lonely Planet for planning itineraries for our days in Barcelona, but feel the book has lost some of the go-to quality that I once associated with LP guides. Time for a new edition, and one that thoroughly investigates what goes between the covers!
Useful, detailed map of the city.......2007-04-10
This is a nice, detailed map of the main part of Barcelona's city. It has all of the major sites labeled right on the map, and it includes all streets, even the very small ones. It also has a subway map, which is a necessity. It doesn't include much of the outskirts, but that is fine for a map of this size. The plastic covering on the map has come in handy, but it isn't completely sealed, so it did leak in a little water when I used it in the rain. Glad I bought it - I would buy it again!
Best Barcelona Gudie Book Ever.......2007-03-30
My boyfriend and I had three days to spend in Barcelona and I'm so glad we had this book. It was super up-to-date (i.e., warning us ahead of time that the cable cars at Montjuic were under construction and non-operational) and the views on the suggested walking tours -- especially the Modernisme walking tour -- were gorgeous.
Most importantly, the eating guide within was very helpful.
Sound guide to a fanbulous city.......2007-02-11
I went to Barcelona recently, and in the planning of the trip I consulted four guide books:
Lonely Planet's Barcelona City Guide
Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Barcelona and Catalonia
Cadogan Guides Barcelona (Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls)
Time Out Barcelona
All of them were good. I took two with me: Lonely Planet and Eyewitness.
The reasons I chose those two:
LP specialises in listings, which seemed to be more up-to-date and comprehensive than either Time Out or Cadogan, It also had a good Excursions section which helped a couple of times when I travelled beyond the city. I also liked a couple of the walking routes they recommended. Information on matters such as public transport is comprehensive and detailed. I like the chapters on history, architecture and food as well.
I took Eyewitness because it unfailingly has a good quality map, which in my view is LP's downfall. Eyewitness always includes a Street Finder Index which LP does not, and LP often misses out on streets other than the major ones, which can be very frustrating, especially in a city like Barca where there are many alleyways. I never use Eyewitness for hotels - the information is scant and usually more expensive than my (more Lonely Planet) budget, but it has fantastic colour photos and cutaways of buildings, and illustrations which place buildings within their streetscapes. It's a nice book to read on the bus or train going somewhere.
Time Out's great strength was in helping to plan. It had a huge array of hotels, and if you were especially interested in nightlife, I would take Time Out. I was there primarily for a conference, and many of my evenings were organised. And I'm also night a great nightclubber, perhaps contrary to Barca lifestyle!! If you are - consider Time Out. Its maps were pretty good, but not comprehensive for the area I was staying in, beachside Barceloneta.
That is where the Cadogan guide excelled. Its maps were so good that I pulled them out of the book and took them with me. I would have taken the whole book, but for the weight in my suitcase! Its info about places and sights seemed accurate and comprehensive.
