Book Description

In this astonishing true story, award-winning journalist Sonia Nazario recounts the unforgettable odyssey of a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States.
When Enrique is five years old, his mother, Lourdes, too poor to feed her children, leaves Honduras to work in the United States. The move allows her to send money back home to Enrique so he can eat better and go to school past the third grade.
Lourdes promises Enrique she will return quickly. But she struggles in America. Years pass. He begs for his mother to come back. Without her, he becomes lonely and troubled. When she calls, Lourdes tells him to be patient. Enrique despairs of ever seeing her again. After eleven years apart, he decides he will go find her.
Enrique sets off alone from Tegucigalpa, with little more than a slip of paper bearing his mother’s North Carolina telephone number. Without money, he will make the dangerous and illegal trek up the length of Mexico the only way he can–clinging to the sides and tops of freight trains.
With gritty determination and a deep longing to be by his mother’s side, Enrique travels through hostile, unknown worlds. Each step of the way through Mexico, he and other migrants, many of them children, are hunted like animals. Gangsters control the tops of the trains. Bandits rob and kill migrants up and down the tracks. Corrupt cops all along the route are out to fleece and deport them. To evade Mexican police and immigration authorities, they must jump onto and off the moving boxcars they call El Tren de la Muerte–The Train of Death. Enrique pushes forward using his wit, courage, and hope–and the kindness of strangers. It is an epic journey, one thousands of immigrant children make each year to find their mothers in the United States.
Based on the Los Angeles Times newspaper series that won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for feature writing and another for feature photography, Enrique’s Journey is the timeless story of families torn apart, the yearning to be together again, and a boy who will risk his life to find the mother he loves.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-10-06

This book made quite an impact on me; I knew people were fleeing poverty, but I had no idea how desperate the situation is in Honduras. And I had no idea of the horrendous dangers those that travel from Central America through Mexico face. It's a story of hopelessness and hope, courage and brutality. With the controversy surrounding immigration from the south so hotly debated now, this brought my focus back to the human side of the story. The author repeated some statements several times which got me to skipping a bit, but I felt she did a tremendous job with the stories of the people at home, on their journey, and in the US.

5 out of 5 stars sad but very good book.......2007-10-05

This is a great book to learn about how one boy from Latin America made his trip to the US to find his mother. It is a very sad book but a great book. I recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Important reading.......2007-07-22

Too much extraneous detail about daily personal interactions within the family will dissuade some from reading the book cover-to-cover. Some data concerning undocumented migrants in the U.S. inaccurate or misleading. That said the story of the journey itself should be required reading for todos estadounidenses.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling , well-written story.......2007-06-24

This true story of one teenager's journey on the "death trains" from Honduras to the U.S. is a fast read. Seventeen-year-old Enrique's tale is compellingly told by the author, who interweaves her supporting facts in a way that moves the story forward, not weight it down with statistics. The author makes a concerted effort to present a balanced view of this illegal immigration process through the eyes of all affected. Enrique's story is fleshed out by interviews with other boys whom have made this harrowing journey, as well as the conductors, family members, police and la migra (immigration) officials, and even townspeople where the trains- and the immigrants - pass through.

4 out of 5 stars A good read, but depressing.......2007-06-18

This book is defintely a good read. It goes very quickly (I think I finished this book in about 5 hours over two days), and it is very informative. The story is compelling, i wanted to know what would happen to Enrique along the way, and even though you know all along the he will find his mother, I was still curious to see how it would unfold.

The journalistic style includes facts about Honduras and poverty throughout Central America alongside the story of Enrique's journey to find his mother in "El Norte." You also read about his family's trials in tribulations in both the U.S. and Honduras. The journalism was great, you really see how starting with one child and going outward influences so many people.

But, of course, it left me terribly depressed. It was good to learn more about the problems of poverty affecting my neighbors, but as a sensitive person I was heartbroken for weeks, and without a good way to make a difference.

I read this book fairly through in trying to determine where and what to do Honduras. Afterwards I ordered the Moon handbook of Honduras and was much more impressed with the maps, detailed descriptions and the quantity of information. Just the better book period.

As you would expect a Lonely Planet guide to be, this book is thorough and complete with gorgeous color photos and many maps. We are headed to Honduras via Roatan on February 17th and will be taking this book along! I purchased it to give as a gift but I couldn't help sneaking peaks in it before I wrapped it!

5 out of 5 stars Lonely planet 'Lonely'.......2007-02-16

This is one of the few books solely on Honduras and their coverage of all aspects of travel there is excellent. Specifics such as language help, money, health, and transportation are well defined. Plus a good read for history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for environmentally and socially conscious travelers!.......2007-08-24

We found this guide to be outstanding. It boasts great maps, color photos, plenty of tips, and comprehensive historical and environmental coverage lacking in many competing guides. It has eco-projects and off-the-beaten-track destinations not included elsewhere. Coverage of archeological sites such as Tikal and Copan (in neighboring Honduras) are outstanding, and the Bay Islands of Honduras are included as well.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money and get something more up-to-date!.......2007-08-23

This book seems to miss the mark in several aspects. I used it for a trip earlier this year but ended up buying another guidebook once there. In terms of content, it either ends up giving you waaay too much information (to where it reads like an encyclopedia) or not enough, depending on the subject. It just wasn't practical and the information was often outdated, to boot. It's also marred by endless pages of text with nary an occasional black & white photo at the end of a chapter (usually overly dense in printing and uniquely uninteresting). True to its name, it was ROUGH and not very user-friendly. The poor layout causes you to strain your eyes while searching for needed information, especially on bouncy roads in a car or bus. It's like flipping through a phone book (some of the subject headings for local services are vaguely labeled as 'listings').
I'd wait and get the new Moon Guatemala and/or Lonely Planet Guatemala. I see both companies are releasing new editions in September. Insight Guides is the book for fantastic color images, though it's not as good for practical information. Note that most of the positive reviews for Rough Guide Guatemala pre-date the release of this latest edition when there were fewer options on the market. Bottom line: This may have once been an OK guidebook to Guatemala, but there are much better options now.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guatemala Guidebook.......2007-05-09

I have traveled to Guatemala 5 times and usually rely on Lonely Planet, but this year bought the 2006 edition of Rough Guide as well. I was SO PLEASED to have it, even though the maps are slightly better in LP. The depth of explanations in RG leaves the reader with much better understanding of places visited, and is a result of the author spending much more time exhaustively traveling and researching Guatemala than the LP authors did. I loved going to places recommended by RG but barely mentioned in LP, places devoid of backpackers following the Lonely Planet Gringo Trail. Lagunas de Sepalau and Bombil Pek near Coban were both recommended by RG and excellent, but also empty of tourists since the Lonely Planet author apparently did not visit them. I visited 5 caves in the vicinity of Coban, but LP only discussed the ones at Lanquin, which they raved about. In fact Lanquin Caves were much less impressive than several of the others. The Highlights section in Rough Guide for each region is an excellent summary of attractions. I highly recommend Rough Guide Guatemala.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the other good guide to Guatemala.......2006-11-10

This guide to Guatemala is better than the one produced by Lonely Planet.

2 out of 5 stars A nice thought but completely impractical.......2006-03-09

As we flipped through the Rough Guide to Guatemala 2002 edition about a month ago, we were really impressed with the layout and the backdoor feel that the Rough Guide had as opposed to the more conventional guide books. Our only hesitation was that the practical information like hotels and transportation schedules might be out of date because it was published so long ago. We found out that a new version of the Rough Guide to Guatemala was going to come out right before we left for our trip so we decided to hold out until it was published. We were so excited when it arrived and couldn't wait to get to Guatemala. When we arrived, however, it became immediately apparent that Rough Guides had not bothered to live up to their claim of reliability. The information in the guide was completely outdated. We ran into logistical problems at every turn. I understand that Guatemala is one of the countries that is in a state of constant flux but some of the hotel recommendations in the book had disappeared years ago. On the whole, the book was good for the ideas of what to see and do and the history of the country but logistically speaking, it left much to be desired. We ended up forgetting the book completely for logistical planning and asked the locals instead.

Book Description

This is the first paperback version of the second edition of the popular A Guide to the Birds of Panama. In the second edition, published in 1989, the authors expanded information on the birds of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras: approximately 200 new species were added to the material in the 1976 edition. Over 300 additional species, some of them Panamanian, were illustrated. Sixteen new plates were added, and three of the original plates were replaced by improved versions. Throughout the book changes were made to accommodate the explosion in knowledge of the birds of Panama and nearby areas and of neotropical birds in general. The basic sequence and systematics of the AOU 1983 Check-list were adopted. Also included in the revised edition was expanded and updated information on birdfinding in Panama, prepared with the assistance of two of Panama's best resident birders. The book also contains a special section outlining developments in Panama ornithology and conservation. "A sophisticated treatment of one of the world's richest avifaunas."--The Quarterly Review of Biology

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Birds of Panama.......2007-01-08

I would recommend that anyone interested in the birds of Panama buy this book, however it is not the only book available about the birds of Panama. There is the Guia de Las Aves de Panama by Ridgely and Gawynne (ISBN 958-95245-0-8) and An Illustrated Field Guide to the Birds of Panama by Ponce y Muschett (ISBN 84-89127-76-X). It is best to have as much information as possible before a trip even if all these books have their shortcomings. Robert B Gillies, Volcan, Chiriqui, The Republic of Panama.

4 out of 5 stars Strong overall with a few significant flaws.......2006-08-18

The text in this book is excellent, with good descriptions of the various species and nice writeups of behavioral habits. However if you want to use the book as a field guide to identify the birds you are seeing, there are some flaws that make this hard to do:

1. Not all birds are represented in the color plates. None of the 15 swift species, for example, get an entry on the plates.
2. Some birds have no picture at all, not even a black and white line drawing in the text. Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, for example.
3. The index is incomplete. Try finding a saltator in the index.
4. There are two sets of plates. Most birds are in the first set, but there is a seemingly arbitrary set of birds relegated to "additional" plates near the back of the book. This makes it hard to do the tried and true method of scanning plates to help you quickly identify the bird you just saw.

So as a field guide this book probably merits only 3 stars. But to be fair it's not labeled as a field guide, but rather a "Guide to the Birds of Panama." Given the high quality of the text, it fills that role nicely.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Birds of Panama.......2006-03-01

Book great. Helped me identify some of the birds I saw when in Panama/CR recently. Illustrations made it easy to recognize the birds.

4 out of 5 stars The only guide out there.......2005-02-16

I visit Panama at least once a year, and this book is the first thing I pack for every trip. There's simply no other field guide out there. Although the book is over due for a thorough update (of both taxonomy and range reports), it's still the best source for identifying birds in Panama. All the guides and researchers that I've met over the years use this book. One of the most useful parts is the section that describes the best birding spots in Panama, as most of these places have remained largely unchanged. The plates are very good, more than adequate.
The book's a bit on the heavy side though. I usually go out birding for an entire day (6 am to 6 pm) carrying water, food, a camera and heavy telephoto lens, a tripod and binoculars. Even so, I've always resisted cutting out the plates, and end up taking the whole thing with me into the jungle. If the publisher were to make available a separate smaller booklet with only the plates, I'd definitely buy it. My back would be very grateful indeed!
Conclusion: If you're planning a birdwatching trip to Panama, you NEED this book!

4 out of 5 stars Best available field guide to the birds of Panama.......2003-06-10

Ridgely's guide is the best - and really the only - available field guide covering all the species of birds in the nation of Panama. While it is useful and serves most purposes, it has been over a decade since the second edition was released, and it is more than due for an overhaul and expansion. The most necessary would be the addition of range maps, that would make the book infinitely more useful in planning a trip. At the very least, there should be a single, detailed map of Panama, indicating the locations mentioned in the range descriptions! Also, it would be better to limit the scope of the book entirely to Panama, as Costa Rica and other areas to the north are covered by other guides, and the pertinent information for those areas in this book are scant, at best. Then, the isolated plates in the back need to be intergrated, as do the plates of Darien specialties, etc. Many species have been recently added to the Panama list, or split, etc, and those species need to be added. But, all this aside, this book should enable the identification of most Panama birds, and remains an indispensible resource for any birder traveling to that country.

Maybe it is because it's a special order book and it took OVER 2 months after paying for it that it finally appeared... maybe the anticipation made it impossible for the book to stand up to my expectation. It's a nice book.. but there's more pages with no photos than I would have thought. And lots of the photos are of people, which would be fine if there were LOTS of photos of the landscape. This book has a few nice photos but after being to Roatan and seeing for myself and even bringing home a few spectactular pictures, I would have thought a professionally made book would blow me away... and it didn't. It's a nice book. But it's not as good as it could have been.

This book takes you right there! The images are lovely and catch the flavor of the islands very well. I wish there were more photos of the rest of Guanaja but it's still very nice.

Reading this book, it's important to remember that it wasn't written by someone with a formal, "liberal arts" education. That said, you need to use your own judgement to decide what's perhaps "biased", and what's not. Remember though, that whatever bias exists, exists for a reason, and should be taken in the context of what was going on at the time, as well as within the author's background. This isn't to say she's wrong, but in fact is correct on most issues, you just need to ensure that YOU the reader, are well versed on the subject (or are willing to become so) before reading this book. From my own experiences in the country, Alvarado seems dead on. Remember too, that the author has put herself in real peril to bring you this account, so plan on counting your blessings as you read.

3 out of 5 stars Good Culture Reference.......2004-12-02

I read this book in order to learn something about the people
of Honduras and how they live. I found it to be a good source
for learning about the lives of "campasinos"...peasants.. and
their struggle to live and raise their families in general.
It was not such a good source for learning about this country's
small middle class and since the author's struggle is with the rich,
all references to them were in a negative light... so it was not necessarily an unbiased resource for learning about them.

    5 out of 5 stars A real joy.......2004-05-21

This book is beautiful and will inspire you and remind you of what is important in life.

1 out of 5 stars the further you stay clear of Medea Benjamin the better.......2004-03-05

Medea B Wouldn't know justice if it bit her. She has called cuba a paradise where friends of mine are under house watch or have served severe prison terms just for political organization!

      Book Description

3 out of 5 stars Excellent story, insightful. Can do better with the translation.......2007-01-10

This true story is an eye opener to the reality of what imigrants face and risk to set foot in the US. Makes us (those who live legally and are born in US) appreciate the opportunities we have. The vivid accounts of the atrocities these poor people go through makes you wonder where the value of human life lies. I recommend you read it in english, as the translation to spanish was not that great.

After reading this book I completely agree with the crowd. La travesia de Enrique is an interesting read especially if you are interested in knowing the details about what children and adults experience in their journey to the USA from Central America in hopes for a better life and future. The author is a journalist and experienced the journey first hand herself, a daring experience that she wanted to endure in order to make writing the book very accurate.

I personally had no knowledge of what these illegals experience in their journey and once they reach the USA more difficulty arises to find jobs due to their status and inability to speak English. I was also glad that Sonia Nazario focused on what happens to the children who are left behind by their parents and the vicious cycle that perpetuates among these families once they reach the USA and in their country of origin.

The book certainly enables me to think differently about the status and rights of illegals in the USA and border control issues.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2006-08-19

5 out of 5 stars Muy buen libro para reflexionar........2006-05-25
