pretty damn good.......2007-10-11
This book is amazing!! And unlike what some people are saying, the rest of the book is full of little tips that anyone can use (for example, the top 5 pieces for work and top 5 pieces of statement jewelry everyone should have). This book is a thousand times better than the British version with Trinny and Susannah (who have a weird obsession with wearing dresses over pants and... um... hair accessories that look like mobiles). The only way this book could be better is if they showed like 9 different looks for each body type instead of just 3. stacey and clinton, we need more advice!!
Pay attention to the dissenting reviews!!!.......2007-10-10
I love What Not to Wear, but I was very disappointed in this book, especially after reading the reviews. The In Style or Lucky Manual has much more useful information. While this book has information for all types of bodies for men and women, as well as a must have wardrobe list, it is seriously lacking because there will not be more than three pages that pertain to you. If you can borrow a copy from a friend or library, and then take notes on the tips, then do that - because buying the book is a huge waste of money. The information is so limited that will be of any use to one person that it quite simply is not worth buying.
Dress to Impress!.......2007-10-06
Yes, this book will teach you how to dress to impress. But I also highly recommend another awesome book- How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You Both books are the ultimate beauty resources that are a must have for every woman!
Great Breezy Read, But . . ........2007-09-28
I love Stacy and Clinton's witty banter and usually sane fashion advice on their show, so when this book came out, I was thrilled. It was (and still is) unavailable at my public library, but after two or three read-throughs, I will probably be donating them my copy. The basic concept of the show is repeated here: Three workable looks for a variety of challenging body types are modelled on 26 actual people who are a stunning array of ages and sizes. It was truly amazing to see these 'plain' Janes and Joes transformed by clothing and a little grooming. However, as others have pointed out, 26 bodies doesn't begin to cover the gamut of potential figure problems out there. Clinton & Stacy are unfailingly kind and encouraging, which is refreshing, coming from their backgrounds in the snarky, body-conscious fashion world. But their biases as lifelong New York fashionistas show through in some of their selections--do most women in America need 3-inch metallic heels for day? Is your average American guy really going to wear a Godfather-style topcoat out on the town? Also, I like many readers have more than one major figure problem; what is a girl to do if she is top-heavy, with more than a little in the middle AND has short legs? My pet peeve with this book would have to be Stacy and Clinton each posing in it as a catagory. At 5'7" and a size 4, Stacy is representing the 'Average Curvy' body type. I submit that there isn't much either "Average" or "Curvy" about Stacy, who has scant need of the tips on 'creating a slimming line' in her spread. Please! What does the woman weigh, 115 pounds? Clinton is the men's "Tall" feature. At 6'4" the boy is indeed a tall drink of water, but his looks are essentially Clinton (= sartorial choices for a NYC fashion maven who is a gay man). This is a perfect glossy read for an afternoon, and has some valuable advice but is too bulky to take shopping, and too limited in scope to refer to very often. Borrow this, or share a copy with several friends.
One time read.......2007-09-03
I really liked this book but I wouldn't recommend buying it. I would try and find it at a local book store and look through it, making notes. The sections pertaining to each body type are very short. The most useful information for my type consisted of three whole pages, the rest of the book being useless for me. Once you read "your section" or body type you don't really need the book any more. Just my opinion.

Helps you figure out where you'd like to go.......2007-09-24
If you're wanting to plan a trip outside the city, this guide helps orient you to all the options. While I didn't use the suggestions on Hotels (too short a list)...it did help me decide where I wanted to go. If you've already decided on a destination, this book won't be that helpful.
Disappointing.......2007-01-18
I visit England frequently. I have an earlier edition of this book which I find to be very useful, even now. The new version leaves out a lot of the good places that were in the old book and it lacks credibility. I have a hard time taking any of it seriously when it tells me that an English pint is 16 ounces. Anyone who is serious about English beer knows that an English pint is 20 ounces.
Wonderful Day Trips !!!!.......2007-01-06
If you are looking for day trips outside of London, this book is great!!! Gives you everything you need to know.I would highly recommend it!
great resource.......2006-11-07
I studied this book trying to decide which day trips we should do. I loved the handy chart comparing the sites. It is very specific and helpful.
very good.......2006-08-12
Only 25 out trips; however there is a lot of information about them including when they are open and how to get there even by public transportation. It also notes how long it takes to get there and how long you have to walk from a train station. Maps of the 25 places are included, which look quite thorough. I plan to use it the next time I am in London early next year.
Book Description
London is the Best City in America, is the insightful, wickedly funny story of two siblings who have found themselves at a crossroads. In mapping their struggles over one wild and emotional wedding weekend, Laura Dave gives us a brilliantly subtle and honest look at contemporary courtship, family tension, and the angst that we all experience when we have to make difficult choices.
Three years ago, Emmy Everett made the painful decision to call off her engagement and leave New York City behind. Since then she has been hiding out in Rhode Island working at a bait and tackle shop and haphazardly shooting a documentary about fishermen's wives. July 4th weekend has rolled around again and Emmy is mustering up the courage to return home to New York (the site of her own failed romance) to celebrate her brother Josh's wedding.
En route to his bachelor party, Emmy is shocked when her typically resolute brother confesses that he is having serious doubts about getting married Â- and he may even be in love with another woman.
Emmy is determined to help her brother face up to this decisionÂthe one she fled from herself. With less than twenty-four hours to go before the wedding, she takes Josh on a road trip to find this mystery woman. Along the way, Emmy embraces her own hard-earned lessons about romance, commitment and what happens when we refuse to let go of the past.
London is the Best City in America is a courageous, big-hearted portrait of love, loyalty, and heartbreak. Emmy is lively, wise and, ultimately, very brave as she tries to answer the universal question: how do we take that first step toward making our lives our own? BACKCOVER: ÂIncredibly deft, utterly satisfyingÂ
I love every character. A triumph of a first novel.Â
ÂMelissa Bank, author of The GirlÂ's Guide to Hunting and Fishing and The Wonder Spot
ÂLondon is the Best City in America is a delicious comedy of manners and a smart examination of the heart and its desires. What a sparkling debut!Â
ÂSusan Isaacs, author of Long Time No See
"With its suspenseful plot, endearing heroine and vivid prose, Laura Dave's London is the Best City in America is an immensely appealing novel. A sparkling debut."
ÂMargot Livesey, author of Eva Moves the Furniture

Engaging & with insight.......2007-09-11
I listened to the CD on a road trip. As a single guy who doesn't read much chick lit and who didn't have any sisters, I found the book helped me to better understand and appreciate the other human species and reinforce some important lessons about making choices.
Page Turning Debut.......2007-08-12
This is one of those books that pulls right in and keeps you pulled in. You'll think, I'll just read a little more - and the next thing you know you've sat up half the night! The characters, especially Emmy (the narrator), are funny and engaging searchers trying to find their way through to the right way to love and live. It's a great read!
Gripping character study.......2007-08-12
From the first pages I'm in with this story. Emmy is an endearing and honest character. She doesn't take herself too seriously and yet she tries to do the right thing. She seems like the kind of girl who would actually emerge from an upper crust enclave with a sense of herself. Her brother's predicament is interesting and not at all cliche. I like the turns in this book and I'm reading all the way through. A very satisfying read!
pure joy.......2007-08-09
I just re-read London and did not want it to end. London tells the story of a brother and a sister who over the course of one weekend really save each other. If you have a sibling it will make you want to call and hug them.
I had the good fortune of actually meeting Laura Dave at one of her readings. As I read London it was hard to believe that a girl in her twenties wrote such a compelling story. This author is wise beyond her years and a complete joy. Everyone left the reading talking about Laura's depth, positive energy and wit. Laura Dave is certainly an author to keep an eye on- I can't wait for her next book.
shallow and superficial.......2007-08-06
I'd seen great reviews of this book, and am always interested in discovering a good new woman author, but this was a big disappointment. Even as a "summer/beach read" (I just read it, it is early August). I'm just not seeing the "depth" and "insight" described by other readers/reviewers. The book reads like it was written by someone in their early to mid-twenties who hasn't really lived through much. "Should Emmy go back to Matt?" "Should Emmy pick Berringer?" "Which woman will Josh pick?" That's about it. A condensed version could have been something you'd read in Seventeen magazine. The characters were never fully developed, and it was all just a bit too precious. It ended with few unanswered questions, but I didn't care enough about the characters to care how those questions might be answered. This may sound harsh, but I like to read well-written books that challenge me and make me think. This one didn't even come close. And it's not like I sit around reading Tolstoy all day. I've read chick lit for fun. Lots and lots of it. This one just didn't have much to offer and seemed to be aspiring to be something it was not.

Robert Benchley was wrong.......2007-08-31
Decades ago, Robert Benchley wrote that there are two ways to travel: first class and with children. Had Ms. Bates and Ms. Latempa written this book before Benchley made his remark, he might not have said it.
Storybook Travels is helpful in bringing parents and children into the same experiences -- reading together and traveling together -- with enjoyment. This book is a must for all readers and travelers. What better way to engage your children in your travel experience?
Our family gives this book and a few of the books referred to within it as gifts at birthday parties and baby showers. It is always a hit!
Thank you.......2004-03-30
Thanks to authors Bates and Latempa for their delightful and intelligent approach to traveling with kids. We have used books such as Linnea in Monet's Garden, Eloise in Paris, and the Madeleine books in our travels to Paris, but what's impressive about this book is the way the authors have drawn on so many other children's classics as a backdrop for family travel. I write about family travel myself and highly recommend this book --it's a good read whether you are packing to go, or just happy as an armchair traveler.
An inspiration.......2002-08-01
This book is a great jumping-off point for family vacations in the US or abroad. It will inspire you to travel AND read with your family!

A Worth It Pocket Guide .......2006-06-26
As with most travel guides, one just has to say that they have been there and that the travel guide was a big help. Okay, it was. But before I bought this travel guide, I had taken the time to look through a few others.
This Fodor's Citypack begins with a few pages on planning your trip to London. The annual weather is given along with some advice on how to get to London from the major airports that serve it and the year round weather. Next comes a section called "living London," the sights of the now London. London's top 25 sights? You know Buckingham Palace is the ninth on the list? London's best is followed by Where To, Travel Facts, an Index, and a very, very useful map.
Like a lot of folks who visit London, we bought passes on the Tube, the London subway system, a idea with which we whole-heartedly agree. The passes also get you the chance to ride those double-decker buses. We bought passes for the entire time we were in London and used them extensively. It does not take long to learn how to use the Tube.
At the same time, bring a good pair of walking shoes. We stayed at a hotel north of Hyde Park, but on our first night in London, we took the Tube to Hyde Park Corner (southeast corner) and walked past Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. Before the evening was over we walked by Parliament, Westminister Abbey, and Big Ben. (Used the map.)
Other sites we saw on our trip were that replacement for the London Bridge (which is now in Lake Havasu City, AZ), the Tower of London, the New Globe Theatre (of Shakepeare), PIcadilly Square, the home of Charles Dickens, and let's not forget the British Museum...
All was made much easier by Fodor. The only tip I might add is that the Tube system does not reach all of the way to Heathrow or Gatwick. Plan the return trip as much or more than the trip to London. In our case, we took a taxi from Hyde Park to Gatwick. The trip took over an hour and was well worth the 60 British Pounds. Check-in at the airport took three hours.
All you need for a quick visit.......2005-08-12
We were only in London for one day, and this little book and its great maps was all we needed to find and see a range of sights. The "walks" are particularly good and helped us have a great day in London.
awesome.......2000-07-18
Fodor's Citypacks are awesome. When traveling to large cities, I always pick up a Fodor's citypack. In addition to nice waterproof maps, the pack includes a 25 point of interest itinerary. So you can easily flip to a site of interest such as Buckingham Palace and the city pack provides a brief description, history, directions, cost of museum, and transportation. Very well organized.
Excellent Travel Info.......2000-05-09
A wonderful introduction and overview of london. the pull-out map is a great idea and the small size makes it a very functional and portable guide. This book enhanced my trip to london immeasurably.

'Twas the night before Christmas... and Froggy was snoozing away! Every year he sleeps through the holidays, waking up only when spring arrives. But this year his friend Max the beaver has other plans in store for his amphibious pal. Tossing snowballs at Froggy's window, Max rouses him and gives him his first-ever Christmas present. "Gee, thanks," says Froggy, faintly perplexed. "I always wanted a drawing of a Christmas tree." But it's not a picture Max is giving him, it's the real thing! The two set off to wake Matthew the turtle and Travis the bear from their hibernations. Soon all four are in search of the perfect Christmas tree. All goes well with the selection, transport home, and decoration...until Froggy decides it's time to place the foil star on top. "Timber!" shouts Max. "Thunk!"
Frank Remkiewicz's cheerful illustrations tell this holiday story beautifully, but Jonathan London's animal banter and sound effects ("Zup! Znap! Zat! Zwit! Zum!" as Froggy gets dressed in his snow clothes--long underwear, purple leggings, yellow and green polka-dot shirt, blue boots, and red plaid coat) beg for read-aloud. Children relate, oh how they relate, to Froggy's silly antics and mishaps, as seen in Froggy Goes to School, Froggy Gets Dressed, and loads of others in the perfectly delightful Froggy series. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Froggy has never celebrated Christmas; usually he's taking his long winter's nap. But not this year! Froggy's best friend, Max the beaver, wakes him up to join the fun. Soon, Froggy's gotten into the swing of things: finding a tree, wrapping presents, singing carols, and enjoying a holiday feast. Join Froggy as he celebrates his very first, and very best, Christmas!
"The humor and spirited artwork will put Froggy fans in the holiday mood!" (The Horn Book)
"Children who have delighted in the earlier books about Froggy will cheer him along as he experiences his very first Christmas." (School Library Journal)

Great series for your kids.......2007-01-13
I personally like this series because Froggy has two good friends, Max and Travis. Both are my son's names. It's nice to see their names in books. The story lines are genuine and teach good lessons too.
They also use fun sounds "Zap, Zup, Zoom" etc.
Froggy's Best Christmas.......2006-08-14
My class loves the Froggy Series. I know they'll love this book too. Great condition. Prompt service.
Let's hear it for Froggy!.......2002-07-18
Another great Jonathon London book! My daughter has all of his books and just absolutely loves reading these fantastic books over and over again! And the illustrations by Frank Remkiewicz are just marvelous!
All I can say is if you want a good book for your child that is enjoyable and pleasant and has a wonderful character then you need to invest in the Froggy series of books!
Froggy Wishes...Merry Christmas to All.......2000-11-28
Poor Froggy, he sleeps all winter and has never been able to celebrate Christmas. But this year, his friend Max the beaver has other plans. He wakes Froggy up from his long winter nap to not only wish him a Merry Christmas, but to give him his first Christmas present ever...a Christmas tree. Froggy and Max hurry to wake up Matthew, the turtle and Travis, the bear from their winter hibernations (because Christmas is about friends) and all four head out to find the perfect tree. They carry it back to Froggy's house, decorate it, make home-made presents for Froggy's family (because Christmas is about family too) and then it's time for Froggy to put the star on top of the tree. Over goes the tree as Max shouts "timber"! This wakes Froggy's mom and dad and they have a wonderful celebration, doing everything...opening presents, roasting chestnuts, singing, eating and even having a snowball fight. And as the day ends, Froggy wishes "Merry Christmas to All" Jonathan London has written a funny, happy, gentle story about the real meaning of Christmas...spending time with friends and family. His easy to read text, full of cheerful animal dialogue and wonderful sound effects is complimented by Frank Remkiewicz's colorful, busy, detailed illustrations. Together they've created a wonderful holiday story that's just perfect for pre-schoolers and that's sure to become an instant favorite in your house.
Book Description
"Raw and Raked, Wild and Free..."
...that was the way Jack London saw life, and the more he lived it the more enamored of it he became. "All I saw," he once wrote, "was glamor of conquest, of scarlet adventure and yellow gold. ...The life was brave and wild, and I was living the adventure I had read so much about."
Brilliant, poetic, swift with violence and action, his stories clearly illustrate the unique spirit of his unbridled genius. Critics admitted that the young firebrand -- "while frightfully primitive" -- was challenging Poe, Kipling and Melville as a one-in-a-million storyteller. The tales in this volume have been thrilling readers for nearly half a century.

Excellent Writing........2005-10-26
Occasionally a writer creates a story that is both horrible and wonderful; TO BUILD A FIRE is one of these stories. Reading it I thought of some negative criticism I had recently read about London's writing. I think the critic is full of it. TO BUILD A FIRE and much of London's writing is high octane, powerful stuff.
One of the few books that has "The Story of Keesh".......1998-09-07
Has some hard to find stories that I like.

Good introduction to Rumpole.......2003-09-22
This is a selection of stories chosen by the author himself, showcasing the talents and idiosyncrasies of Horace Rumpole, described by his own wife (known as 'She Who Must be Obeyed') as a character. We follow Rumpole through various cases, which give us an insight into Rumpole's views of life and the law (he is quite scathing of both). We meet various regular inhabitants of the Rumpole stories - the Timosn family, who with their many and varied exploits provide Rumpole with much work; 'Miz Liz' Probert, Rumpole's feminist protégé; uncle Tom, who hasn't seen a brief for many a year and spends his days in chambers practicing his putting; and many others. While very humourous, some of the humour is a bit dated, though this may be part of its appeal for some.
The book is a collection of short stories, originally published elsewhere, and each stands alone. so you are able to dip in and out of this book. I am not really a fan of legal stories, humourous or otherwise, but in short dose these make a light break. It is also a good introduction to the Rumpole stories for those who haven't encountered Rumpole before, or have only met his television incarnation. And the individual stories are short, so it's not like you have wasted much of your time if they are not for you
A sampler of great stories.......2002-03-15
Well, yes, a strong case could be made that these stories represent the Best of Rumpole, although Rumpolemaniacs must argue for a few omitted cases, but, great as these stories are - and they are engaging, clever, funny, satisfying - I don't know what the purpose of this sampler is meant to be. To introduce Rumpole to a prospective reader I would start with The First Rumpole Omnibus. It addds much to the pleasure of reading Rumpole to get to know him as he develops over the course of the original stories. On the other hand, this makes a terrific airplane or travel read, even for those who've read them all before (Rumpole is one of those characters that not only holds up well read after read but actually improves with familiarity).
Any of the Rumpole books could be on a '10 Best' List.......2000-03-14
If you were introduced, as I was, to the Rumpole character through the excellent PBS series, there's a treat in store for you. John Mortimer's Rumpole stories are almost too good to be true; they're witty, humorous, and can be enjoyed as examples of good writing in addition to being well-plotted mysteries. They're one of the few mystery series which don't lose enjoyment even after you've seen the film adaptations. My favorite Rumpoles are probably Rumpole a la Carte and Rumpole on Trial; this "Best of" compilation features stories, chosen by Mortimer, from several different eras, including Rumpole's very first appearance. The book is a good way to get acquainted with Rumpole, and it also makes a great gift.
The only possible downside is that, after reading the Rumpole stories, you may think that Mortimer's other fiction doesn't *quite* measure up. Here's hoping he decides to bring back Rumpole!
A touch of wry British humour, and starkly genuine.........1998-06-14
Mortimer paints a realistic picture of life in a barristers' chambers, but lightens the solemn and sombre mood with the playful descriptions of the characters to whom you will become strongly attached in time.
Even though for one who does not hail from an English background, it was relatively easy to comprehend the sarcasm and ironies aimed at the empty follies of the English legal practioners, which Mortimer portrays through the thoughts and words of Horace Rumpole. Rumpole is a good sort, who seems often the underdog, but deep down he is the barrister who would be the champion for the unjust.
