Book Description
An unprecedented rape of Mother Nature from the 1880s to the 1940s completely changed the wooded landscape in the northern Great Lakes region of America as well as the society and ecology forevermore. In this time of empire building, logging towns grew like weeds around sawmills and often died when the last tree was cut. The people living there called it "cut and run." This fascinating book presents true-life photographic images of the loggers and the people they touched. Here we see the lumberjacks and river pigs who began the work, railroad loggers who extended the range and types of logs available, and a close-up look at one town in the wilderness. With hard work written across their faces, these men and women who dedicated their lives to the logging industry earn the respect of today's readers through the dynamic photographs and poignant stories related here. To build American towns, they toiled to make the lumber available; they succeeded and became legendary.

A history of a colorful era.......2002-12-11
Book Review
That "Cut & Run" Loggin' Off the Big Woods" is a coffee table book is obvious when you see its cover with the three lumberjacks posed with their axes but, it is much more than that. There are over 150 pictures in its 144 pages all of them clear as bells and none of them seen before by me.
In addition to the pictures, there is text on each page and the text is what sets it apart from other books of its type. The book is written by Mike Monte, who I know. He lives in Crandon, Wisconsin, is a former logger and the son and grandson of old time lumberjacks. Where he got all the original photos I don't know but, the writing comes naturally to him from a life long interest in the logging history of the north woods. If its possible to love the sinner while hating the sin, Mike does that. He makes plain his contempt for the timber barons who were responsible for the cutting and running but his love and respect for those people who actually did the work and lived the life shows through on every page.
Although most of the book is about the loggers, teamsters, railroaders, sawmillers and river rats who did the work, there is also a lot about their wives and families. There is an entire chapter on "Padus" a typical "sawdust" town which no longer exists. Its now part of the small town of Wabeno. There are pictures of boiler explosions, train wrecks and fires all of which plagued these early towns and mills. Pictures of stores and saloons and mud choked main streets. People in their Sunday best and lumberjacks sleeping 4 and 5 to a bed in the logging camps. All with colorful descriptions , some from elderly people who actually lived the history.
You learn a lot about those days. Beneath a shot of a 'Jack with a two bitted axe, for example, Mike explains that they kept one edge sharp, the other dull and used the dull end on frozen wood since a sharp edge would chip out on frozen wood.
Since the timber companies all paid about the same wages, food in the camps made all the difference. Mike says that 'jacks would quit jobs to follow good cooks from one job to the next.
The book doesn't stop with the clearing of the pines. There are sections on the follow up harvests of hemlock and hardwoods and, finally, the cutting of what was left for pulpwood. By the 1920s it was pretty much all over. Some 70 years to take it all.
For those who are really interested, Mike shows pictures and explains, for example, the difference between an A frame jammer and a slide ass jammer, both of which were used to load logs onto railway cars. The book can serve as a history lesson into a colorful industry of the past and/or, simply a collection of interesting photos. Either way, its well worth owning

A treasury of old photographs.......2002-11-01
The publisher stumbled onto a treasure in this collection of photographs of early logging in America. Mike Monte's enthusiasm shines through his commentary on the history of logging. He's interested in the loggers, their trees, their lifestyle, their machinery, their locales, their women, in short, in everything associated with the logging industry in the United States more than a century ago. I keep wondering what it would be like to eat in the logging tent at the table with these rough-looking guys, or sleep on a plywood cot next to a fellow still wearing his hobnail boots--or hang out the laundry in a couple feet of snow....this book is to die for!
Book Description
The most visible cultural institution on earth between the World Wars, the Hollywood movie industry tried to satisfy world-wide audiences of vastly different cultural, religious, and political persuasions. The World According to Hollywood shows how the industrys self-regulation shaped the content of films to make them salable in as many markets as possible. In the process, Hollywood created an idiosyncratic vision of the world that was glamorous and exotic, but also oddly narrow. Ruth Vasey shows how the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), by implementing such strategies as the industrys Production Code, ensured that domestic and foreign distribution took place with a minimum of censorship or consumer resistance. Drawing upon MPPDA archives, studio records, trade papers, and the records of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Vasey reveals the ways the MPPDA influenced the representation of sex, violence, religion, foreign and domestic politics, corporate capitalism, ethnic minorities, and the conduct of professional classes. Vasey is the first scholar to document fully how the demands of the global market frequently dictated film content and created the movies homogenized picture of social and racial characteristics, in both urban America and the world beyond. She uncovers telling evidence of scripts and treatments that were abandoned before or during the course of production because of content that might offend foreign markets. Among the fascinating points she discusses is Hollywoods frequent use of imaginary countries as story locales, resulting from a deliberate business policy of avoiding realistic depictions of actual countries. She argues that foreign governments perceived movies not just as articles of trade, but as potential commercial and political emissaries of the United States. Just as Hollywood had to persuade its domestic audiences that its products were morally sound, its domination of world markets depended on its ability to create a culturally and politically acceptable product.
The World According to Hollywood will be a useful and important work, appealing to scholars interested in questions of national cinema and national identity, as well as the history of censorship and the MPPDA.Lea Jacobs, author of The Wages of Sin: Censorship and the Fallen Woman Film, 19281942
Customer Reviews:
Why were so many "imaginary countries" used as locales?.......1997-06-03
In this insightful survey of Hollywood films between the World
Wars, the author shows that the increasing proportion of
revenue from foreign markets dictated not only
greater attention to their political, social, and
religious sensitivities, but also influenced the
very form of the medium, e.g., a tendency
toward "action pictures" at the expense of
"dialogue pictures",
Admirably researched asnd clearly written, Vasey's
work will be essential for film students and others
interested in Hollywood's impact on the world, and
vice versa.

Book Description
Myth, Ethos, and Actuality examines the depiction of mythic themes on Athenian public monuments in the period following the Persian wars, during the second and third quarters of the fifth century B.C. By relying not only on material remains, but also on the evidence of contemporary Greek history, rhetoric, and poetry, David Castriota interprets the Athenian monuments as vehicles of an official ideology intended to celebrate and justify the present in terms of the past. Castriota focuses on the use of myth as part of a strategy of ethical antithesis that asserted Greek moral superiority over the "barbaric" Persians, whose invasion had been repelled a generation earlier. He examines how, in major public programs of painting and sculpture, such leading artists as Mikon, Polygnotos, and Pheidias recast the Persians in the guise of wild and impious mythic antagonists (Amazons, Centaurs, Trojans, and Giants) to associate them with the ethical flaws or weaknesses commonly ascribed to women, animals, and foreigners. The Athenians, in contrast, were compared to mythic protagonists (Greeks, Lapiths, etc.) representing the excellence and triumph of Hellenic culture. Castriota's study is innovative in emphasizing the ethical implication of myth as an official tool of moral and ideological justification and the transformations that such concerns imposed on various mythic analogues. In the guise of mythic precedent, contemporary events could be endowed with a deeper cultural and religious significance, appearing as the outcome of long-established societal standards and divine will. Castriota explores how the myths were substantially altered to resemble the invasion and defeat of the Persians and to render them more effective as archetypes for the defense of Greek culture against a foreign, morally inferior enemy. The book also looks in new ways at the isse of audience response. By considering how the patrons and planners of such imagery could anticipate its impact on the viewer, Castriota reveals their efforts to manipulate public opinion through the selective presentation or repackaging of mythic traditions.

It invites everyone to enjoy a rich variety of sites, from the famous Milwaukee Art Museum to the smallest local historical society. The book:

Could have used a better editor.......2007-05-11
I picked up a copy of this book from my local library today, hoping to plan a summer vacation using the information therein. It's going to be a tough read if the rest of the book is filled with as many spelling and grammar errors as I found on the first few pages! Hopefully, the actual content of the book will be useful enough to overshadow this. If Mr. Rajer releases a second edition, I hope he finds a new editor.
5 stars for content, 3 stars for comprehension.

Entertaining Book on Milwaukee's Old-Time Movie Theatres.......2006-12-31
If you are at all interested in old movie theaters, especially those in Milwaukee, then you will no doubt love this book. It is informative and very well written. It's actually sort of an update to a similar book the authors wrote back in 1986. However, I do have a gripe with the lack of photograghs for some of the more important theaters. For example, there are no auditorium views of two of the largest and most noteworthy downtown theaters, the Warner/Grand and the Wisconsin. There is also no auditorium photo of Milwaukee's most popular and still thriving neighborhood theater, the Oriental, though other parts of the theater are shown, and it is discussed at length. I was also surprised there were no photos of the Avalon, which is currently undergoing restoration.
I realize that not every photo of every theater could be included, but it seems that the more significant theaters should have had at least one auditorium view. After all, this book is represented as a "pictorial history." In spite of that criticism, I still consider this book well worth purchasing. Most of the photos that are included are excellent, and the text, as noted above, is very well written. And unlike their 1986 release, this book comes with a much-appreciated index.

Madison: The Illustrated Sesquicentennial History, Volume 1, 1856-1931
ASIN: 0299218708 |
Book Description
These words crackled in the headphones of crystal sets around the country in 1921 as the University of Wisconsin radio station 9XM began its regular schedule of voice broadcasts. Randall Davidson provides the first comprehensive history of the University of Wisconsin radio station, WHA; affiliated state-owned station, WLBL; and the post-World War II FM stations that are the backbone of the network now known as Wisconsin Public Radio. 9XM Talking describes how, with homemade equipment and ideas developed from scratch, 9XM endured many struggles and became a tangible example of "the Wisconsin Idea," bringing the educational riches of the university to all the state's residents. From the beginning, those involved with the radio station felt it should provide a service for the practical use of Wisconsin citizens.
The book's informative chapters cover the programs that allowed the medium of radio to benefit farmers and homemakers, to bring world-class educators into isolated rural schoolrooms, and to teach people all over Wisconsin everything from literature to history to touch-typing, long before anyone came up with the term "distance learning." Davidson concludes by discussing the claim that WHA has to the title "Oldest Station in the Nation." This groundbreaking book is based on archival materials dating back to the 1900s and includes dozens of historic photos and illustrations, many of which have never been published before.
Customer Reviews:
Authoritatively researched.......2007-01-29
I just completed reading Randall Davidson's fine book on the history of what is now Wisconsin Public Radio. As a former WPR reporter, I found it both entertaining and fascinating. One of the best unexpected aspects of the book are the wonderful pictures, detailing the roots of radio. There's one in particular that stays with me: a shot of the first car equipped with a "radio." Hey, watch the wires! 9XM Talking would be a perfect text for a radio history course or for anybody who's into radio in a big way.
A very well-done history of early radio in Wisconsin.......2007-01-01
I really enjoyed this history of 9XM/WHA Radio. The author managed to combine an enjoyable, readable narrative with solid, well-documented historiography. Plus he demonstrates his full understanding of the terminology of broadcasting - no annoying mistakes in "radio-speak" in this volume! A good book - recommended highly.

Beautiful and scholarly study. A must for collectors!
Customer Reviews:
Superior content.......2007-02-10
I'll be upfront and admit I am one of the contributors to this catalog. That said, I believe that review readers are owed a counterbalance to the one submitted by "A Reader" in 2001, who does not seem to understand what a collection catalog is, or did not notice the subtitle of the book. This is not survey. It is a very carefully focused, in-depth examination of the best of the Milwaukee Art Museum's American furniture and related decorative arts collection. While the MAM collection is not encyclopedic, examples there are of excellent quality and highly representative of the best types of objects owned and used in colonial and early Federal America. In short, they are undeniably "museum quality." "A Reader" complains of a lack of visuals but by their own text admits that the average number of images to text is better than 1:2. Given the extraordinary detail in each catalog entry (there are 113 in total) this is a very strong ratio indeed. In addition, the images are extremely high quality and show both overall scope and details very clearly. Finally, the essays at the beginning of each period section (17th century, William and Mary etc.) are excellent and could be used as a textbook for teaching American furniture history where there truly is no such text anywhere else.
In short, this is not a coffee table-type picture-book survey, it is much more useful!
Not what I expected!.......2001-02-10
I purchased this book believing it was a pictoral history of fine American furniture. Instead, I found very few examples of period furniture(especially for an art museum). The book contained over 300 pages but only about 170 photos; less than 20 in full color. I expected to get the experience of walking through a museum of fine furniture and seeing the pieces in FULL COLOR! This book is far from that. The authurs only showed a small number of examples of furniture and furnishings from each period(William and Mary, Queen Anne, American Chippendale, Federal style); not nearly enough to give you a sense of the many beautiful pieces made during these periods. I felt the book tried to cover too much material without giving you a visual understanding of the many different styles. If there is any good to be said about this book it is that it was very professionally written, with a wealth of information given for the pieces that were shown. There are some interesting sections on identification of wood used in furniture and the ethafoam treatment of a Boston easy chair.
In summary, if you thought this was a pictoral book full of beautiful, museum quality, American antiques... save your money. It's not worth the $85.00.
