    Book Description

    foreword by Kenneth Frampton
    essay by Eric Dluhosch

Prague is a one of Europe's oldest and most beautiful cities. Originally published in Czech in 1985, this seminal work focuses on the architecture of Prague from the turn of the century to the end of the Second World War: a rich matrix within which to place the figures who created the powerful, innovative spirit of modern Czech architecture.

Encyclopedic in its coverage, The Architecture of New Prague documents the architects, structures, and theoretical underpinnings that helped to shape Prague's cultural heritage and present-day artistic spirit. Three supplements appear in this edition: a directory of approximately 1,200 buildings (with street addresses), 25 short biographies of the main Prague architects of the time, and a revised bibliography. The more than 300 illustrations, all commissioned for the book, were taken by architectural photographer Jan Maly.

The text provides detailed coverage of the most important architects and their buildings, many of which have never been documented in any English-language publication. There are also valuable insights into the cultural conditions that helped to shape the Czech capital. An introductory chapter takes up Prague's urbanistic development and its context within international architectural movements.

2 out of 5 stars Covers only the last 12 years of Prague Architecture..........2006-05-11

I was expecting from the sparse description of this book to find an architectural guide to the over 6 centuries of buildings still standing in Prague. In fact, this architecture guide only covers 75 buildings all of very recent design---none older than 1994, and most built since the year 2000.

The print and binding quality of this small, 192-page book is very high. Excellent photographs.

The text is translated into 4 languages; and that means that the amount of architectural description that you will find for any one building may be considerably shorter than what you would otherwise expect in a 192-page book.

Buy this book if you want an introduction to Prague's most recent architecture.

I suggest buying the Blue Book Prague, however, if you want a compehensive guide to the range of Romanesque, Medieval, Rennaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau and Modernist architecture in this beautiful city.

    Book Description

The extraordinary architectural heritage of Prague has meant that the city is now regarded as one of the artistic and cultural capitals of the world. The turbulent history of the city is reflected in the range and diversity of buildings discussed in this book: from its baroque churches and palaces to the state offices and housing projects of the post-1945 communist era. The guide covers all aspects of Prague's development since its early years, through its periods of both power and decline from the 15th to the 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the architecture of the last 100 years. Since the democratic revolution of 1989, the city has once again become a place of pilgrimage for those interested in architecture and design. This book covers some of the most recent architectural projects to be planned in the city.

4 out of 5 stars Superb guide to Prague's architecture.......2001-04-24

I consulted this pocket-sized book constantly on my first trip to Prague and used it as my principal tour guide. Free of the useless chat and inappropriate tongue-in-cheek tone of a tourist book, it gives the date, architect, history, and notes about all the significant buildings. A map allows you to look up buildings by location. Some pictures are of poor quality, and they are all in black and white.

          Book Description

Illustrated in color throughout, this handsome volume presents selected papers from an international symposium held in June 2001 marking the completion of a ten-year project to conserve the Last Judgment mosaic, at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The project was a partnership between the
Office of the President of the Czech Republic, the Prague Castle Administration, and the Getty Conservation Institute. The goal of the symposium was to present the methodology, research, and results of the project, which involved conserving one of the finest examples of monumental medieval mosaic
          art in Europe.
The volume's essays are divided into three parts, which cover the historical and art-historical context, conservation planning and methodology, and project implementation and maintenance. Topics addressed include the history, iconography, and visual documentation of the mosaic; the development and
application of surface cleaning and protective coating techniques for the mosaic's glass tesserae; and post-treatment monitoring and maintenance.

                  Book Description

This lavishly illustrated book introduces the world of fin-de-siècle Prague. Around 1900, city's artists and artisans began to develop a particular ornamental language inspired by the contemporary revival of Czech culture and influenced by Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and the Vienna Secession. To begin with, lyricism and poetic symbolism dominated the visual arts. Jan Preisler, one of the most important figures of the time, created sensual paintings and sculptures based on themes connected to the writings of such Czech authors as Zeyer and Brezina. Other artists such as Kobliha and Hlavácek focused on turbulent forms, dramatic expressions of torment, and the macabre. In the applied arts, exuberant floral and vegetal motifs were gradually transformed into geometric patterns. Prague 1900 charts the effects of the emergence of modernism and the search for Czech national identity in both the fine and the applied arts, as well as in architecture, music, and literature. The book also includes a wealth of illustrations of interiors, architectural and sculptural details and documentary photographs. Biographies of the most important artists are provided, as well as a full chronology of artists and events.
