Undertones of disdain towards the German culture.......2006-10-23
Having lived in Germany for a year now, I decided to finally flip through this book, given to me as a parting gift in April 2005. As I read, I was appalled at Mr. Flippo's seeming dislike for Germans. The book is more of a warning for all the traveling American's to be on their guard rather than an informative guide. My favorite quote is, "This "pushy" behavior is not limited to Germans. It's a European thing" (p.31). This extraordinary generalization is quickly followed by the warning that you must either bring your own shopping bags or purchase one in a German grocery store and, as stated by Flippo, "to add insult to injury, you usually have to bag your own groceries". Gee, reducing waste by encouraging the reuse of shopping bags and keeping prices low by simply putting your Müsli in your own bag instead of hiring some prepubescent bag boy to do it for you is a pure abomination and should be henceforth considered "insult to injury" (I'm hoping you're noting my sarcasm). The book continues in this fashion, with hardly a bright comment to be had about this amazing culture. The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead on one is because the author does have a few nuggets of truth and interesting observations woven within his cleverly placed one-liner biases. If you still purchase this book, remember to read critically and differentiate opinion from facts.
60% of contents are useless facts........2006-06-29
just on principle, i have returned the book even though it was only $9. it's definitely not for someone looking for a guide to german ways; the book should have been updated since 2002.
Useful.......2006-06-16
This book is a good reference for anyone planning on spending any time in German Europe. At the very beginning of the book there is quiz to test your knowledge, of which the answers are provides at the back of the book. Flippo uses culture and history to explain the German way of life. He covers all the main travel subjects such as entertainment, food and drink, language, and transportation. He also talks about other topics not often found in the common travel book; such as business and economy, health and fitness, and education.
Flippo makes it very easy to read. I would suggest reading the whole book because although some areas may not interest you, the articles are brief and provide a good cultural understanding of the German way of life. Due to the variety of topics discussed in this book, I would recommend it to anyone who plans on spending a little extra time submersed in the German culture. While the book is very enlightening and should be read by everyone traveling to Germany, it covers more than just the basic travel information.
Nice stories but it reinforces stereotypes and urban legends.......2006-02-21
I have lived in Germany for more than 20 years and am currently residing in the United States.
I bought this book as a gift for a friend. Browsing through it myself I found that some things pointed out in the book are on-spot (for example the "Sie und Du" section on how to address people, or insights on dining out).
However, some things covered in the book describe a Germany of 100 years ago (the "Hauptmann von Koepenick" episode, while factually correct, fails to point out that today's Germany fortunately has little resemblance to the Prussian-style military culture of yore described here).
And the chapter on "Kehrwoche" - purportedly an institution of cleaning the hallway in front of one's apartment - is an urban legend to me. Visitors to the town of Stuttgart have told me that they heard of people subjected to such neighborhood rituals. But in all my years in Germany I have never had anybody confirm such facts to me so it is a regional oddity at best. And again the author fails to put this into proper context, thus making today's Germans seem like some cleanliness-and-orderliness-obsessed oddballs to a much greater degree than they deserve.
So while there is some truth in all hyperbole I encourage you to buy a book written by somebody who has seen more than one or two cities and who has been to Germany recently.
A Charming Little Book.......2006-01-27
This book presents short snippets of cultural information about Germany and Germans. Each topic covers a single page and is written in a brief newspaper article style. I found out a lot of interesting little things. For example, if they put rolls on the table, they aren't free. You pay for every roll that you eat. It's little tidbits like this that make for some very interesting reading.
It's a very light read, and you can probably finish it on the plane ride to Germany. The topics are mainly cultural in nature, so you won't find any hard travel advice in this book. I recommend it for those who would like to learn a little more about the people they will visit when they arrive in Germany.

The German Way.......2006-06-22
This is a great book even though it is ten
years old and slightly outdated. It gives
really good information on everything from
shopping to food. You will surprised on how
different the United States is from Germany.

An OKAY guide...(Used for a school trip to Austria).......2006-06-16
Just to let everyone who is reading this know, I was assigned this book for a class I took while studying abroud throughout Europe. I was specifically interested in using this book for information on Austria. Here's what I think:
The book wonderful for providing a reader/traveler with basic information about the three predominately speaking German countries. It is broken down in a form that a reader of any age can comprehend. Hyde Flippo simplified the navigation process by putting the chapters in alphabetical order and not the order of importance. The book does a good job of briefing a reader on Germany, Austria and Switzerland--giving very basic information and history on each country. Some of the specifc topics covered in the book include climate, culture, family, gestures, transportation, money, communication, etc. Germany clearly appeared to be the main focus of this book, and seeing as how I personally was looking for information on Austria, I did not find it to be quite as helpful.
The book was published in 1997 and again in 1999, and after reading it anyone should notice that it is very outdated. The book talks about currency as the Austrian schilling and the German marks, yet both countries have converted to the Euro over five years ago. It presents information in a manner that is too brief for one to actually benefit from or sustain a substantial amount of knowledge after reading. The book is written very factually, and consequently has little or no enthusiasm present. Additionally, it is difficult to read from start to finish. However, it would serve as a good guide and is a quick and easy reference to virtually anything one could want to know about the German-speaking world. Therefore, I would only recommend this book to anyone who may be traveling to Germany in the near future.
A Quick Read.......2006-02-19
This slim volume presents dozens of aspects of German culture. For example, why do Germans value privacy? Why do they always close windows when they feel a draft? I definitely learned a lot from this book. My only complaints is that it could have gone a little more in depth about the causes of German behavior. Also, this book is a little out of date. It was published in the 90's, so there is a lot of talk about Marks rather than Euros, and you read a lot about the reunification of Germany, which is not as hot a topic as it was in the 90's. Even with these weak points, I think you'll be able to learn a lot. I wish that the author would release a more up-to-date version, though.
Incredibly Helpful.......2006-02-08
I really enjoy this book. The average tourist may not get as much from it, if only passing through. I am an American, living in Germany. I found much of the book incredibly helpful. Yes, some sections are dated with the intro of the Euro, but it's true, stores close by 1800, some open til 2000. Nothing open on Sunday, except at the train station.
Highly recommended if you will be living or travelling for an extended time!
A Must for Study Abroad.......2006-01-23
I read this book before I did a study-abroad program in Germany. It was extremely helpful! Many of these things I had no idea about, and when I tried them, everything went smoothly. For example, in a German restaurant, instead of waiting to be seated, you just pick a seat. Also, to tip, one just rounds up to the nearest dollar and tips that amount. I had servers try to give me back 50 cents because they felt it was too much! This book is not only informative, but is also a good and easy read. Highly recommended as a must-have for students studying abroad!!

Customer Reviews:
I just want the facts sir............2007-04-30
This book had some great information for Americans looking to learn more about the real German culture. However, I had to stop reading it because it was too depressing! I was looking for true, factual information, but I was disssapointed that I had to wade through all of the negativity to get it. Great info, not so great writing...sorry, but those are the facts.
Interesting.......2006-02-02
Living for nearly 70 years in Germany as a native born German I don't agree with the negative reviews on this book. I read it with pleasure and found everything almost correct, maybe some smaller items and details could be corrected or updated. Lord gives a short and accurate summary of living in Germany. It is obvious that "each coin has two sides" as we say in Germany - and telling the negative (seeming) facts warning the visitor not to overrate his first impressions surely does not mean that Lord feels any bitterness towards my country.
More Germans should read this book - they would become conscious of their behaviour that might seem strange to foreigners and could try to make them more comfortable.
I am only sorry that Lord compares only very seldom German habits with US habits. Urgently I should now read another book: Cultureshock USA!
Useful, but to be taken with a grain of salt.......2005-03-18
I am a German who was given the book by an American and read it out of curiosity. It is a helpful book, and I even agree with most of its not-so-flattering observations and statements about my country. However, it should be taken with a grain of salt: It was clearly written by someone who worked in the business world of Frankfurt, Germany's center of banking and corporate finance, and had rather stiff, conservative suburban upper middle class, suit-wearing business people as his German acquaintances and friends. What he describes as cultural "compartmentalization" between public and private lives applies to conservative business culture (certainly to banks), not so much, for example, to academics, artists, freelancers etc.
What's more, Lord's observations apply chiefly to the wealthy, more conservative Southwestern part of Germany between Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich, less so to East Germany or Northern Germany. For example, his advice that "upon entering a small shop, one should always intone a robust Guten Morgen, Guten Tag or Guten Abend" should be followed only in small towns and villages, and South Western Germany with its more provincial culture, but surely would raise eyebrows or amusement in Hamburg or Berlin. Same is true for his advice to greet all neighbors or co-workers in a house "in the following manner: 'Guten Tag, Frau Schmidt; Guten Abend, Frau Müller". I had to laugh out cordially when I read that, but, well, it's true to the extent that this is the politeness code if you work in a bank or live in a Western German neighborhood of chiefly conservative senior citizens.
Another detail: His remarks about "Hausordnung" (house order) and cleaning the stairs in front of one's apartment again applies to Southwest Germany only, in fact Northern Germans often make fun of this aspect and cite this is as one reason why they never would move South.
Or, to take with a grain of salt, too: "Any invitation for Saturday or Sunday afternoon around three or four o'clock always entails a duty to serve coffee and cake". I can only repeat myself and pity the author for having lived in an environment of _extremely_ conservative, possibly old people. In such passages, the book is actually counterproductive as it creates potentially false images and expectations for Americans visiting Germany.
Or the rule of always giving an odd number of flowers to hosts - I admit I have never heard of this in my life, having lived in Germany for more than 35 years... Or the rule that it is considered extremely rude to leave the toilet door open after one has used it.
Well, I could go on and on with such examples. They actually taught me something, too - etiquette I have never heard of and I probably should know if I ever worked in an upscale corporate environment between Frankfurt and Munich.
So this book is roughly equivalent to a guide to the USA which extrapolates from a corporate work experience in, say, Atlanta to all American culture.
Wonderful book!.......2004-10-25
I disagree with one reviewer's "bitter undertones" caveat. It simply isn't true. I've lived in Germany for a number of years and everything he writes has also been my experience and I love this country and the people. I got the same 'feeling' from Mr Lord's prose. To hit him over the head about his book dedication is rather much isn't it? It's the "main" reason he stays in Germany, not the only one. German culture, if it isn't one's native culture, presents unique and sometimes frustrating challenges everyday. That's simply the nature of any culture outside our own.
I bought this book in spite of reading the "bitter undertones" review and am happy I did because I wanted a book that I could recommend to other newly arrived English speakers in Germany.
I thought Richard Lord did a superb job and would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone considering coming to Germany to live or visit.
Richard Lord covers all the basics and addresses all the parts that might "shock" if approached unaware (as I did when I moved here in the 90's) so of course his book is going to contain some things that might sound unpleasant - hence "Culture Shock". It wouldn't be called that if people didn't get nasty surprises when they leave their home cultures. All cultures have equal value but going from one to another almost always contains things we initially (or maybe forever) see as negatives. He also addresses all the practical aspects of living in Germany and that, in itself, is more than worth the price of the book in what it will save in lost time, lost money and buckets of frustration.
He's done the German people a great service by explaining many of the 'whys' of the ways they live and the things they hold dear. It's especially satisfying to see much of the explanation placed in historical context - where much of cultural habit resides. It's never enough of a picture to know that a culture is "this way" without knowing why because every aspect of a culture is rooted in its very special and unique experience. Once understood in context, it all makes more sense and then it's loads easier to adapt. I expect he managed this so well because he respectfully integrated himself into the culture insofar as possible for someone born and raised elsewhere.
If you buy this book, you'll be very, very glad you did.
pretty good except for bitter undertones.......2004-05-06
This book is packed with information and little interesting historical tidbits. It was interesting and easy to read. After living in Germany for a year now, I can say that while plenty of his observations seem accurate, others seem exaggerated....especially the negative ones. And most of the book has a really bitter negative undertone. It seems the author actually doesn't like Germany or Germans all that much. The dedication reads "For Gudrun, the main reason that I've stayed in Germany"...clearly Germany itself was not reason enough for him to stay. Nonetheless, this is still a decent and informative book. If you read it just keep in mind (it's hard to forget) that it was written by someone who is only there for his wife and doesn't really like it.

Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable and enlightening.......2006-06-16
I found this book very useful for it is pocket size and easy to carry around. It can also be used a reference book, skipping the sections that may not apply to you. I think, however, that this book provides a great all-around insight into the life and culture of Germany and each section is just as useful and interesting as the next.
Tomalin starts with a map of Germany and an introduction, followed by a useful chart of key facts. It ends with an appendix of simple vocabulary as well as a list of further reading. One aspect of this book that I liked in particular were the shaded boxes or `bubbles'. These were areas throughout the book in which the author goes above and beyond to provide us with extra commentary, explanations, or suggestions.
It was very informative and I felt that it gave an accurate depiction of German life and culture. The author's writing style is very easy to read and often humorous. He provides short real-life stories to make the reading more interesting, understandable and easy to relate to. I would give this book five starts and recommend it to anyone wanting to travel to any German country as well as those simply interested in learning about other countries and cultures.

Really bad.......2001-05-09
That is one of the worst books I have ever read. The author, Roland Flamini, lived in Germany for four years but he has absolutely no idea what is behind the German business, etiquette and customs. There are many details wrong. If Passport Germany is your only guide to succeed in the German market or to make business with German companies, you can be sure that you will fail. There are many details about the German economy, companies and business missing. However, the main problem is that many topics a badly investigated. Here are some highlights: Answering the question `How German view themselves', he quoted Goethe and Moser; both lived in the 18th century - who cares. Furthermore, Mr. Flamini, nowadays, it is not forbidden to make any noise between 1:30 and 3:30p.m. throughout Germany. In addition, Germany also has non-smoking regulations and the period of time a German spend his or her entire working career with one company is also past - and not present. It was funny to read that the German lunch time is 12:20 to 1 p.m., how precise. However, Mr. Flamini, the carnival in Germany is in February/early March and not in October and the Oktoberfest is in September and not in October. As a result: This book is boring and useless! It will confuse you and you will just waste your time....
With this Passport, a lot of doors in Germany will open.......1997-12-07
Passport Germany is a bright star among those few books explaining common values and beliefs in Germany. Though the book is intended to serve as a first introduction to foreign businessmen, it actually is a treasure for everybody coming to Germany and trying to understand the German way of living and thinking. Why are Germans that concerned about Ordnung (order)? You will understand why after reading this little book, as well as learning about the right way to shake hands in Germany. Brilliantly did the author describe the step-by-step approach of getting to know each other; this piece of information can avoid too high expectations when it comes to socializing with Germans. The chapter on behaviour at the workplace and in business meetings is covered in an adequate manner; though there are some details which are outdated or not correct, the overall value of this book can not be questioned. But nevertheless some chapters need a thorough looking through, e.g. the opening hours of stores have changed; we have got 176 women in German Parliament instead of 26; carnival in the Rhineland is not in october, but in february; and the most northern winyards of Germany are not in the Rhineland, but in the area of Unstrut/Saale (former GDR). The author recommends that business men should have their German language paper material crosschecked by a German. Perhaps he should stick to his own recommendation and have his Passport Germany crosschecked by a German, too. It certainly would change my rating to the higher end. (reviewed by:Markus Brinker)
