This is a great cookbook! So far, I've tried about 15-20 of the recipes and they have all been tasty, fast, and easy. Some of the ingredients are new to me but that's only made me stretch and try new things. I have three of the South Beach books, the blue "original", the orange cookbook, and now this and, while they're all good, this is my favorite. It has tons of delicious, healthy meals the whole family will enjoy and no one will know they're eating "diet food." Best of all, with the help of a garlic press and a mini food processor, I really am able to have a great meal ready to eat in about 30 minutes. Enjoy!

I was looking for a cookbook that follows the guidelines of South Beach Diet and had quick, easy recipes for a busy lifestyle. This book is full of them! It doesn't have a lot of recipes for Phase I, which was a little disappointing. I think it's most important to hook people with good food during Phase I, otherwise they never make it to Phase II. Everything I've cooked so far tastes very good. The variety of recipes and ingredients is impressive. It goes very far to show that just because you're dieting doesn't mean you can't have tasty food.

The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy—-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots—-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

This is a diet book whose plan is to get you to lose weight by limiting your carbohydrates- essentially another low-carbohydrate diet. It has 3 phases where your carbohydrates are severely restricted at first, and then re-introduced.

I have personally read three controlled trials comparing low carb diets to your regular calorie restricted diets that were published in scientific journals. The results? Low carb diets produce more weight loss during the first 6 months, but at one year follow-up, both groups had lost THE SAME amount of weight. Therefore, it really doesn't matter which diet plan you choose, the South Beach diet or your standard low calorie diet, because if you can stay on either of them for a year, you'll lose the same amount of weight.

To that end,then, the South Beach diet is a fairly healthy diet plan and a good one to choose from, but the bottom line if you want to lose weight is to cut your calories with ANY diet plan and absolutely stick with it and make it a part of your lifestyle. Readers that yo-yo diet and can't seem to stick with a diet plan might want to check out The Sixty-Second Motivator for help with that. Good luck!

I'm not one to follow diets usually, because I always believe in eat less/exercise more. Unfortunately that doesn't work, because when I exercise more, I eat more. When a friend recommended the South Beach I decided to read up about the philosophy first before jumping in. I had always been raised to think that carbohydrates are good and fats are bad. What Dr. Agaston explains is that there are good carbs and bad carbs, good fats and bad fats. The South Beach diet educates you on what is good for you, and what causes weight gain and harmful blood chemistry.

As for the mechanics of the diet, it is really quite simple. I never followed their menus, or their recipes. I just looked at the allowed foods and made up my own meals. I really hate to count anything, document anything or look things up. This diet doesn't require any of that, unless it is to count the number of peanuts you should have for a snack (which is really quite simple to do). It also doesn't require purchasing special meals, or drinks, or anything. Just follow the principles, adapt to your own tastes and off comes the weight.

There are 3 phases to the diet, all explained and easily understood. The book also explains the physiology of the diet, and why harmful swings in blood sugar can cause problems, including overweight, diabetes and heart disease. Once you get your blood sugar levels under control, you do not get cravings anymore or hunger pangs in between meals. It is really ironic that being on this diet does not make you hungry. In fact, starving yourself, or being hungry is counterproductive, since the key is to maintain a steady blood sugar state, so that you do not experience the feast/famine cycle which causes overeating, as well as overstorage of fat.

I've just purchased my sixth gift copy of The South Beach Diet. No, I don't go around sending it to people who I think need to drop some pounds. But when a friend wants to know how I lost weight or why we aren't eating potatoes or bread, and they seriously indicate an interest in following new food-eating patterns, I send them a copy. My husband and I bought a copy three years ago and embarked on our South Beach food adventure. Within six months, I had lost 40 pounds, he had lost the ten that was his goal, and while I have gained part of mine back after slipping off the path, I am now back on it to drop 10 lbs.

Dr. Agatston gives enough philosophy behind his diet suggestions, and his fairly rigorous first two weeks is succcessful quickly enough, that we found it easy to continue. And I can honestly say, I never felt hungry.

4 out of 5 stars Some Programs are Better than Others.......2007-09-20

I have been there, I have seen it, I have done it all! Low carb, low fat, low this, low that... It took me many years to realize that diets are nothing else but what they are - just diets. I will NOT say they don't work. Sure they work! At least as long as you watch each and every bite you take! At least as long as you maintain your strong willpower. It IS nice to have good looks, but is that all we want from our lives? How about GOOD LOOKS resulting from GOOD HEALTH? Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year" cites bad habits that lead people to obesity. Here are some of them:

1. The habit of eating fast and not chewing the food well
2. Drinking fluids at meals
3. Frequent snacking or constant chewing
4. Incorrect combining of food products
5. Lying down after meals
6. Sitting lifestyle
7. Eating while watching TV
8. Eating while irritated
9. Eating before bedtime or at night
10. Eating mostly refined and cooked food products.

Recognize some of them? Mr.Tombak, like Atkins and Agatston, also mentions eating too mach of carbohydrates. But he does not limit the cause of obesity to ONE SOURCE. Why? Because he applies COMMONSENSE. Because he puts GOOD HEALTH before GOOD LOOKS! Not good looks at all cost! Here is how he proposes to lose weight:

1. Correct the alignment of lumbar vertebrae. (Have you ever heard of this one? He explains why.)
2. Gradually and systematically increase the amount of your physical activities. (Nothing new, isn't it?)
3. Combine food products correctly. (We hear often about this one, too)
4. Perform internal cleansing routines and go through regular fasts.

Yes, just periodical short fasts that will cleanse your body, and shake off your cravings. It is nothing new! It is a simple procedure applied by many people around the world throughout ages. Larry Clapp in his book "Prostate Health in 90 Days" advocates the same. None of these unnatural diets throughout your entire life!...

I did a few days of fasting myself, and I strongly recommend this over any kind of diet to anyone who cares about his looks, his health, and his longevity. Periodical fasting energizes; purifies your body and mind; makes it easier to change your eating habits and to get back to natural, fiber-rich foods.

Everybody has his own opinion, but for me Tombak makes much more sense then Atkins, Agatston and all other inventors of "perfect diets"...

Why four stars for "The South Beach Diet"? -- Because it works! But at what cost to your lifelong pleasure, and (possibly) to your health? Be sensible. Read Can We Live 150 instead.

If you can't stick to the Atkins diet then this one will be even more of a challenge because with Atkins you get to eat higher fat contented foods where as with South Beach you have to choose the lower-fat, lower-calorie versions of the food you get to eat on the Atkins, I would recommend starting with Atkins(the strictest low carb plan) then after induction phase, try South Beach's induction then phases 2&3 shouldn't be too much of a problem to stick to.

You may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.

Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. I am a Registered Nurse and believe that this book WILL save lives if people will use his program. I brought my total cholesterol down 80 points in just 3 months-in my case, using old-fashioned oatmeal and 2 tbsp. milled flaxseed EVERY morning for breakfast and THEN following the South Beach Diet for the rest of the day. (I cannot go almost completely without carbs, it doesn't work for me.)My HDLs (good) are OVER 85 and my LDLs (bad) are less than 120. Triglycerides were great, at less than 100.My doctor was so shocked, he searched my records to make sure he had not prescribed a statin medication! I hope this is not too technical and helps you.

From the author/cardiologist of the popular "South Beach Diet" comes "The South Beach Heart Program" -a book designed to get and keep your heart in shape via a 4 step plan.

Step one is getting on a good diet. It should come to no surprise that the diet plan recommended is the heart healthy South Beach Diet. Step two is the exercise portion and the book recommend walking and strengthening exercises, particularly your core. The rationale here is that you can't keep your heart strong and exercise if your other muscles are weak. Step three is about getting the right tests. In other words, the earlier you get the tests, the better your chances are of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And finally, step four is getting the right medications one might need.

Good for anyone concerned about being heart healthy, I recommend this book for due to its comprehensive discussion of its subject in plain language. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers needing help making healthy lifestyle changes. Good luck!

I thought it fell short in providing "do's and dont's" for the diet. It was a wealth of information on the diagnosis and treatment of heart desease. I was looking for step by step instructions on how to follow the diet, I did not get much information at all on the subject.

This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all adults and probably on an exit exam for high school students. I have bought five copies of the book and given four away to friends and family. I will probably buy a few more. This book tells the reader how to analyze the problem, measure it and deal with it.

Beautifully done. Its too complex for my 16 month old right now but I can see her loving it as much as we do in the future. I won't be surprised if it becomes one of her favorite books to read. When that time comes we will have lots of fun making up stories to go with the pictures.

This book is a wordless story appropriate for children of many ages. The pages are full of beautiful illustrations that actually tell a story without having to use words. It also gives children the opportunity to use their imaginations to some degree because they are not strictly told what happens. In it, a boy finds a camera washed up on shore and develops the film. The pictures reveal underwater fantasies in large, brightly colored images.

This is a beautiful book. Great pictures. But, no words. My child was very confused when there were no words to read. It does allow you, however, to expand and make up a story. But, I would have liked to know that this book had no words before I bought it!

This guide is fantastic for various reasons, as many have mentioned. My main use of it has been in connection with other cookbooks not specifically meant for the South Beach Diet. I love Italian food and have cooked out of "The Silver Spoon" for a long time. When I went on the South Beach Diet, though, I was terrified - no carbs meant no pasta! When I got my hands on this little guide, though, I was saved. Now I can flip through my Italian cookbooks and, in conjunction with this little volume, I can choose meals that fit my diet. Also, if I need to, I can use this book to replace some ingredients which may not be diet-friendly. A fantastic book and a definite winner!

This Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide is just the thing to leave on your kitchen counter. I do, and refer to it constantly! The first part of this little book describes the South Beach Diet. Next, an outline of how to use the Food Guide. Then the food guide itself. Easy to read, and use. This guide is a must for anyone on the South Beach Diet. And, even if you aren't, but watching your fats and carbs, it's amazingly useful. I am having greater success, and much less stress adapting to this healthy lifestyle, thanks to this guide.

I could not put this book down. I especially enjoyed Patterson's reference to real life scenarios and applaud his accounts in multicultural writings and versatility from music references to basketball. The book will keep you on your toes. I wish there could have been a better ending as I really liked 'Tom'. Definitely recommend it especially for the not so serious reader, like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and you will too.

I just never got into this book. I'm an avid fan of James Patterson's books... I've purchased so many at airports across the country it is almost comical.

But this one never really drew my in like most others. There just wasn't enough depth to any of the characters and their relationships to each other were missing something. And the ending just did not make sense. I didn't feel there were enough clues to lead me to say "aha" at the end.

Short story - I was disappointed. I won't quit reading... just disappointed in this yarn.

I think Patterson could have done without the help. I like Patterson's style and move-along plots. This plot however, with the autopsy on Peter's body getting passed off as a drowning-suicide, was a disappointment. The rich buy the courts, but not with the kinds of evidence the coroner presented. The ending really frosts the cake when they have their "Kangaroo Court" in the abandoned Beach house over a two-day span. Since it wasn't terrible, I can only give three stars.

This is a great guide if you can stick to it. It contains over 200 pages of restaurants across the map. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Applebee's Grill and Bar and Pizza Hut just to name a few. You just have to make sure you remember what phase you are on before selecting your menu choices and this guide will let you know what food you can have in your phase. This is a good reference guide when you go out to eat. I started by taking the book with me then I just started writing down things that I might enjoy from the restaurant that I was going to. I think for long-term weight loss, you have to be mentally prepared to commit to a change of life. You should also research as many diet plans as you can, this way you can find out what works for YOU, and not what works for majority of people. You have to see yourself as a unique individual and remember; what works for someone else may not work for you. I gave this book 3 stars because unless you are clear of how the South Beach Diet works you may get frustrated with this guide.

My husband and I gave South Beach a try, but we gave it up about a year ago. The recipes were just so time consuming and the ingredients seemed pricey. We did experience some wonderful results, though. Well, now that more microwave meals are available and meal replacement bars, as well as a 30-minute meals cookbook and this guide, we've decided to give it another try.

This guide is wonderful. It lists all of our favorite chain restaurants. We had no idea there was anything low-carb at one of our favorite mexican restuarants, but sure enough, they offer up fajitas in lettuce wraps. And even for local restaurants not listed, this book gives you ideas on what to look for on all menus. This great resource is just another way South Beach doesn't even feel like a diet.

This cook book is wonderful! Recipes are easy and taste really good. Friends have said "I thought you were on a diet" after eating a holiday or special occasion meal with us. This is the first cookbook I have bought where I can see myself actually trying every recipe in it. Dr. Agatston has broken the book into specific holidays and events (Easter, Thanksgiving, Football parties, showers, etc.), but of course feel free to mix and match recipes based on what your preferred tastes are. The recipes that I have tried so far have been easy and delicious. The best part is at the end of every recipe, he tells you what you can prepare ahead of time, from hours before your event to days before your event. Each recipe is labeled as to which phase of the South Beach Diet it pertains, just as in his other books. This cookbook is too good to save just for holidays and parties. I'm planning on using it year-round for my family's everyday meals.

Such is Ian McEwan's genius that, despite rambling nature walks and the naming of birds, his subject matter remains hermetically sealed in the hearts of two people.

It is 1962 when Edward and Florence, 23 and 22 respectively, marry and repair to a hotel on the Dorset coast for their honeymoon. They are both virgins, both apprehensive about what's next and in Florence's case, utterly and blindly terrified and repelled by the little she knows. Through a tense dinner in their room, because Florence has decided that the weather is not fine enough to dine on the terrace, they are attended by two local boys acting as waiters. The cameo appearances of the boys and Edward and Florence's parents and siblings serve only to underline the emotional isolation of the two principals. Florence says of herself: "...she lacked some simple mental trick that everyone else had, a mechanism so ordinary that no one ever mentioned it, an immediate sensual connection to people and events, and to her own needs and desires...."

They are on the cusp of a rather ordinary marital undertaking in differing states of readiness, willingness and ardor. McEwan says: "Where he merely suffered conventional first-night nerves, she experienced a visceral dread, a helpless disgust as palpable as seasickness." Edward, having denied himself even the release of self-pleasuring for a week, in order to be tip-top for Florence, is mentally pawing the ground. His sensitivity keeps him from being obvious, but he is getting anxious. Florence, on the other hand, knows that she is not capable of the kind of arousal that will make any of this easy. She has held Edward off for a year, and now the reckoning is upon her.

McEwan is the master of the defining moment, that place and time when, once it has taken place, nothing will ever be the same after it. It does not go well and Florence flees the room. "As she understood it, there were no words to name what had happened, there existed no shared language in which two sane adults could describe such events to each other." Edward eventually follows her and they have a poignant and painful conversation where accusations are made, ugly things are said and roads are taken from which, in the case of these two, the way back cannot be found. Late in Edward's life he realizes: "Love and patience--if only he had them both at once--would surely have seen them both through." Second, or was that third, in the Booker Prize rankings... for the second, or was that the third time. Here we have someone who has quite clearly become the best writer in the English speaking world yet again relegated to an "also ran" for a work that is not only stunningly brilliant and deeply moving in its storyline & execution but which is so beautifully written - with almost every sentence requiring one or more repeat readings to appreciate how incredibly well constructed they are - failing to get the recognition that it deserves. How "Atonement" failed to win this coveted prize was extraordinary but with "On Chesil Beach", Ian McEwan's best novel to date, the failure of his peers to recognise the talent they are dealing with defies belief.

As Scott Fitzgerald showed with "The Great Gatsby" and "Tender is the Night", superb writing involves cutting everything back to its bare essentials... re-crafting every word so that in the minimum of pages you pack more power and emotion into what lesser authors take double or treble the space to do and, in the process, create unforgettable novels. And with "On Chesil Beach" the comparison is entirely valid - after re-reading it for a third time what comes across is McEwan's ability to distil into single sentences of superficially casual observation such tension & mystery that the whole story becomes attention demanding and genuinely thought-provoking... what is actually going on here, and why?

Twenty, thirty or fifty plus years on my guess is that his best novels, such as "Atonement" and "On Chesil Beach" (and, hopefully, those to come), will still be being read a long time after those who have passed such flawed judgement on them are long gone and a long time after those works who they chose to rank "better" are lost.

"On Chesil Beach" is more a novella than a novel. It's also nothing like the similarly-titled "On the Beach" or "Beach Music". McEwan tells the short, but intense story of a young British couple on their honeymoon in 1962. Both are virgins, but with very different attitudes about sex, and, in keeping with the times, utterly incapable of discussing the subject.

With such a narrow scope, essentially the events of one evening of the couple's honeymoon, "On Chesil Beach" is necessarily intensely personal, sometimes uncomfortably so--even though we know that we're reading about fictional characters and the events of the story "happen" almost 50 years ago. Still in the retelling of those events, and of their consequences in the later lives of the characters, McEwan makes a very important point about dangers of miscommunication or worse, no communication, in relationships.

Five stars for this short but powerful work, but for adult and near-adult readers only. The climactic scene isn't lascivious, but it is fairly graphic. Younger readers may also get bored by the British understatement and calm of the first half of the book. I look forward to reading more of McEwan's novels.

Again Ian Mc Ewan tells us a story that takes place in just one day and goes back and forth to show us why it happened and what the consequences were. This an extreme situation that leads you to the inevitable What ifs in everyone's lives. What happens after an extreme decision and how you see it some years afterwards. This is a dramatic, visceral, intense, delicate and brief novel about love in a wrong time. Sometimes, we realize that it was only the wrong time but it is too late. The way he describes how Edward remembers Florence after many years and how he receives traces of Florence's life after finding that her musical group played a successful piece that was so important in her life.

I was so disappointed in Saturday that I didn't read this until a friend gave it to me. Wow, am I glad she did.

I found this to be McEwan's best. It is short, intense, and clearly demonstrates that sex is more in the brain than in the body. No need to repeat the story; this is a sad tale of two people who lack the confidence to be honest with themselves and each other -- not an unknown quality in many of us.

I did find it somewhat surprising that the book was set in the 60's; not the 60's I remember even in small town repressed middle America. However, not everyone is at the same place at the same time. Their families and their upbringing truly made them who they were especially for Florence who apparently had some sort of shameful encounter with her father. There is probably somebody with the same repressed feelings even today when almost anything seems fair game for public discussion.

I loved this book; it is sad, intense, and provides a narrow peak into the deepest experiences of two people who had the ability to love but didn't have the ability forgive themselves and each other.

The book is in good condition, but I think it took far too long to be shipped out to me. I am accustomed to receiving packages within a few days to one week. Ten days is too long. Another book I ordered simultaneously from another vendor arrived in six days. I was thrilled with that order, and I've almost finished reading that book.

Before anyone discredits what I say, I'm over 14, so don't think I have no clue what this book is about. I totally knew what this was about-not much! (It's just waaaay easier to use this than the main review feature)

The book has a simple plot-girl gets engaged, girl starts planning wedding, conflict, solution, et cetera.

Becky Bloomwood gets engaged to her boyfriend of about two years, Luke. Apparently, his mother's a jerk. Becky's parents begin to plan a white-trash wedding, Luke's mother plans a 'high-class' wedding as she calls it. Trust me, the way it sounds, it's just a way to make a bogan appear to have class. Both weddings are being planned for June 22nd. Becky is so entranced by the Bogan Party she can't tell her future mother-in-law no. And her friend Suze (who, quite grossly, likes to keep it in the family-she marries her cousin and gets pregnant) keeps telling her about the White-Trash Nuptuals, and Becky feels so bad that Mum is going to all this trouble, she can't bring herself to tell her it's canceled. What's a spoiled, poor little rich girl to do?

First, what grown woman is incapable of planning her own wedding? I've never had a wedding, but I do know many girls who don't need their mom to do all the planning, nor their fiancees. In the book, 'Bex' as she's called, is given every opportunity to tell both women, "No, I don't want this." And yet she never does. Her favorite part of getting married is registering-at about four different shops.

Becky was cute in the first book, I was practically laughing every page. Now I just think, "Wow...what an irresponsible bimbo. Can't she do anything right?"

This is a library book, definately. It's also very light, so if you need a book to do a report on or something to choose for book-club, this isn't it. This is more like a, "Oh, yeah, I needed somethin' fluffy to read by the pool!" Frankly, if you choose this for book-club, the only thing you'll be discussing is Rebecca Bloomwood's immaturity.

This was my first and last Shopahilic book I have read. The plot was dim. The only reason I read the book all the way to the end is because I was hopping something bad would happen to Becky. I really hope other Shopahilic book aren't' dim as this one, but I am not reading any other Shopahilic books to find out.

Although this is a good book and fun to read, with all the wedding planning and goof-up's, it's not as funny at Shopaholic takes Manhattan. Now I have to read ALL of them, oh what a problem to have.
