Book Description
Inside this indispensable and beautifully illustrated workbook is everything you need to know to become an esteemed Egyptologist.
As readers of the fascinating EGYPTOLOGY are all too aware, the feisty explorer Emily Sands mysteriously vanished on an expedition up the Nile in 1927. But in a remarkable turn of fortune for Miss Sands's many fans, detectives have uncovered a second volume penned in her own hand — a course book on ancient Egyptian history and culture intended for the voyager's beloved niece and nephew. Now available to budding Egyptologists everywhere, this comprehensive volume — illustrated by the same artists who lent their talents to EGYPTOLOGY — is brimming with facts on ancient Egyptian culture and history, followed by intriguing assignments and fill-in opportunities on everything from archaeological finds to theories on how the pyramids were built.
Among the book's delightful novelty elements are:
— An envelope containing Miss Emily Sands's Top Ten Things to See in Egypt
— Flaps to lift, revealing hidden treasure in desert sands
— A four-page foldout section full of stickers featuring treasures from King Tut's tomb and other ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Very Nice.......2007-07-04
I enjoyed this book and am sure that my grandchildren will as well. I was surprised that it was smaller and less interactive then the companion book. "Egyptology, Search for the Tomb of Osiris" which everyone in my family loves. But this one is fun and full of understandable information.
Fantastic Book.......2006-07-08
My 10 year old daughter first checked this out of the library twice & still wanted to check it out again.
I logged on to Amazon & found it, bought it as a surprise & she looks at it & reads it at least weekly.
If you want a GREAT kids book on egyptology this is it!
Good companion to Egyptology. .......2006-02-28
There are more maps and flaps to explore. I thought it went very well together with "Egyptology"

Book Description
This is the second revised edition of the first up-to-date, and complete grammar of Egyptian Aramaic as presented in texts of Egyptian provenance dating from the middle of the first millennium B.C.E. and as edited by B. Porten and A. Yardeni in their Textbook of Aramaic Documents from Ancient Egypt (Jerusalem, 1986-1999). The grammar covers not only the phonology and morphology, but contains a substantial section on morphosyntax and syntax. It is a descriptive grammar enriched with the expert knowledge and familiarity of one of the co-authors with the contents and background of the texts in question. It is meant to replace P. Leander's Laut- und Formenlehre des Ägyptisch-Aramäischen (1928), but also supplements it substantially, because it had no syntax. Due to the utmost importance and interest of these ancient texts, this grammar is a vade mecum for every Aramaist, Semitist and Historian in the field.
Book Description
Spanning the years from c. 5000 B.C. to the early centuries A.D., the Nile Valley civilization was one of the earliest created by humankind. It remains one of the most fascinating and influential. This handy yet encyclopedic reference work offers a comprehensive overview of ancient Egyptian history, from Predynastic times to the Old and New Kingdoms to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Accessible, authoritative, and clearly organized, the Handbook to Life in Ancient Egypt affords an engaging look at a culture whose art, architecture, religion, and medicine came to form the basis of Western Civilization. The thematically arranged chapters allow readers easy access to several key topics, including historical background, geography, government, religion, funerary customs, architecture, literature, the military, the economy, and everyday life. Drawing on written sources dating from c. 3100 B.C. and such widespread archaeological evidence as monuments, artifacts, inscriptions, and preserved human remains, noted Egyptologist Rosalie David covers everything from the Sun Cult and the pyramids to the arrival and dispersal of Christianity. Her useful Handbook also features: * 112 maps, photographs, and original line drawings * suggestions for further reading at the conclusion of each chapter * a chronological table of over five millennia of Egyptian history * an appendix listing museums with Egyptian collections * a timely and extensive overall bibliography as well as a thorough index Combining archaeological and historical sources, this Handbook provides all the essential data required by anyone interested in Egyptian history, archaeology, religion, or culture.

Excellent Book.......2006-08-09
The book is very thorough in the information it provides. Pretty much self explanatory.
Plenty of info.......2005-07-21
This book gives a good overview of what we know about the Ancient Egyptian culture. This was a book I had to purchase for a class on the subject and I found it quite interesting.
Great survey!.......2004-09-24
This book basically follows the same format for the "Handbook to life in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome" books of Adkins and Adkins. That's a good thing, since I enjoyed those books.
I have significant interest in Ancient Egypt but know very little about it. Most texts simply concentrate on the pyramids and other monumental architecture. This text gives you a much more balanced introduction and includes sections on history, religion, the military, geography, trade and economy, and daily life. It's organized very well. It has plenty of pictures, illustrations, chronologies, etc. There is a suggested bibliography at the end of each section to encourage research in greater depth.
Overall this is a very affordable and user friendly survey of Ancient Egypt that will service students as well as adults with no prior background to the subject.
Helpful Reference or Beginner's Guide.......2004-03-07
HANDBOOK TO LIFE IN ANCIENT EGYPT is a very helpful reference and the revised edition gives the most up-to-date information. It really is more like an encyclopedia. It is not necessary to be read cover to cover as such, although the reader can do so. It is divided up into 12 chapters covering 12 different topics. Some of the information, if pertinent, overlaps in the chapters, but is put there for completeness. The chapters are: 1 - Egyptology, Archaeology and Scientific Mummy Studies in Egypt; 2 - Historical Background; 3-Geography of Ancient Egypt; 4 - Society and Government; 5 - Religion of the Living; 6-- Funerary Beliefs and Customs; 7 - Architecture and Building; 8-- Written Evidence; 9-- The Army and Navy; 10 -- Foreign Trade and Transport; 11 - Economy and Industry; and 12 -- Everyday Life. There are also a Chronological Table, a List of Museums with Egyptian Collections, a Bibliography and an Index included.
This is a helpful reference for anyone and is especially useful to the person just beginning to learn about Ancient Egypt.
Kemet.org Book Review Posted!.......2001-04-23
A wonderful book to replace the very outdated and patently racist "Life in Ancient Egypt" by Erman, David's coffee-table book about the worldview and culture of the ancient Egyptians is quite nice. Be aware of a tendency to read certain portions of Egyptian life as "coming from an outside source" (an oblique reference to the outdated "Dynastic Race Theory" that, sadly, still seems to be held to by some British archaeologists). Otherwise factual, useful, and filled with an excellent bibliography.

Essential reading for Egypt Buffs.......1999-03-25
This guide was essential reading prior to and during my trip to Egypt. The information given regarding the ancient sites and how to find them was most helpful. The guide offers invaluable historical perspectives and interesting tidbits about the sites. My friends and I even found information about remote sites that we thought we'd have no chance of finding. Although we used other travel guides for most of the information on lodging, etc., the information contained on those aspects was certainly accurate. I wouldn't go back to Egypt without it!

Informative, and iconoclastic contribution to Egyptology.......2001-02-08
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Moustafa Gadalla's Pyramid Handbook is a unique, informative, and iconoclastic contribution to Egyptology with its focus on the pyramids of antiquity. Featured are the locations and dimensions of the interiors and exteriors of the pyramids; varied theories on the construction, purpose, and function of the pyramids; the sacred geometry that was incorporated into the design of the pyramids; and a great deal more. Pyramid Handbook is fresh, original, thorough, scholarly, completely accessible to the non-specialist general reader, and enhanced with useful illustrations of the sites and interiors of the Egyptian masonry pyramids. If you have an interest in Egyptology, the Pyramids, and iconoclastic archaeological studies, read Moustafa Gadalla's Pyramid Handbook.
Everything in one easy book.......2000-08-14
This book contains a complete synopsis about the pyramids. Finally, there is a book that gives all the information about the pyramids, their locations, dimensions, profiles, why they were built, and how. The sacred geometry of the pyramids and pyramid power are very interesting. Well researched, and well written.
All the guide you need.......2000-08-14
From having traveled to Egypt myself, I can tell you that this is one of the best books on the pyramids I've ever read. If only I had this when I was there, I could have been so much more fullfilled. I was especially interested in the writtings on sacred geometry. I can't wait for for the next time I get a chance to go to Egypt and visit the pyramids armed with Gadalla's book. This is a must own for anyone traveling to Egypt or has ever wanted to know the truth about antient Egypt and the pyramids.

very difficult to use.......1998-06-17
this book is very hard to use. When I bought this book I had no expirence in egyptian hieroglyphs this book probably would be better for someone who has a knowledge of some grammar and wocab. it would be a good review book for the expirenced.
This is an accurate book about Egyptian.......1998-02-21
I like this book, but it is quite difficult to use. In it, the author criticizes Budge by saying that he is inaccurate, but I think that Budge is just at accurate in his own way as Mercer is in his. Budge, on the other hand, makes it easier to understand Egyptian.

No! No! No!.......2003-02-15
Watch out...this is not a modern book.
It is a Dover reprint of an Egyptian grammar published in 1920. If you are interested in the Egyptian language and script, don't waste your money.
I'd recommend either Collier and Manley's "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs" ,or Allen's "Middle Egyptian". Check the reviews for these 2 books, and decide which best suits your goal.

Book Description
With this illustrated dictionary of hieroglyphics, anyone can understand their significance and unlock the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
Whether sculpted, painted, or drawn on ceramics, hieroglyphics ornamented the temples, palaces, and tombs of ancient Egypt. What did those intriguing and elusive pictures mean? With this new approach to hieroglyphics, you'll step back 5000 years into the past and begin to understand their significance. More than 200 original hieroglyphs combine with detailed semantic explanations to bring a new dimension to drawings almost astonishing in their modernity. Go through it like a dictionary, reading phonetic and graphic interpretations: every element in each panel is broken down, revealing how and why a picture of two serpents, plus a rope and legs in movement, signified destruction. You'll feel as if a whole old world is opening up to you.
Customer Reviews:
Good practice for beginners.......2003-01-26
First off, although this is an introduction to hieroglyphs, it is NOT a grammar of Egyptian. It is an introduction to the SYMBOLS that the Egyptians used to write their language.
It is an expansion of the tall, thin Dover paperback "Egyptian Hieroglyphics (How to Read and Write Them)" by Ms. Rossini that was published, in English, about 15 years ago.
The book presents 26 uniliteral signs (the hieroglyph represents one consonant), over 80 biliterals (the hieroglyph represents two consonants), and about 30 triliterals (the hieroglyphic symbol represents a sequence of three consonant sounds). To oversimplify, these 3 types of symbols are the phonetic "building blocks" used to write Egyptian. For each symbol, the authors give about 4 words that incorporate the symbol in question. The pronunciation of the illustrative words is given, along with a breakdown of its elements, the definition, and a brief explanation.
I'm not a big fan of learning vocabulary in isolation, but working through the book will certainly give the beginner a solid introduction to the more common symbols, and practice in recognizing how they are used to represent words. (One criticism - the use of uniliterals as phonetic complements for biliterals / triliterals is not brought up to any extent, from what I can see. But anyone serious about Egyptian will eventually use a text that makes that clear.)
In sum ... a good-sized book, for a low price, that gives plenty of practice in learning and recognizing the most frequent hieroglyphs, with some cultural notes that should be of interest.
Suitable for anyone over the age of (I'm guessing here) 12 or 14.

Book Description
In 1990, Cassandra Vivian wrote and published Islands of the Blest: A Guide to the Oases and Western Desert of Egypt, which became an overnight bestseller and an instant modern classic. No traveler in the Western Desert was without it.
Now retitled, reorganized, and substantially expanded, The Western Desert Handbook is set to become the most comprehensive guide ever for desert and oasis travel in Egypt west of the Nile. Fully illustrated with some 50 maps and plans and over 270 drawings, the guide covers both the natural history and the human history of the desert and the oases. It then explores chapter by chapter the oases of Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariya, Fayoum, and Siwa, and the desert areas of al-Diffa (the northern, semi-arid edge of the desert), the Darb al-Arbain caravan route in the south, and Uwaynat (including Gilf Kebir) in the southwest. Descriptions of routes, sites, people, and places are complemented by practical information on places to stay, eat, and fill your gas tank. Global positioning system (GPS) waypoints are provided as an aid to navigation on many routes - though for the sake of conservation and the protection of unguarded antiquities they are not given for remote sites. Almost encyclopedic in its scope, this is the one guide that belongs on the bookshelf, dashboard, or rucksack of every Western Desert traveler.

The Western Desert of Egypt.......2006-03-18
I purchased this book in anticiptation of a trip to Egypt and have just returned. I can say that this is the Bible of the desert. It is filled with incredible detail about each area.
The writing is descriptive and easliy readable. At the end of the book there are helful suggestions about tranportation and places to stay.
The desert is a most fantastic place and there are few tourists there. One has to be a flexible traveler to negotiate it, but it is well worth the effort. The scenery is otherworldly. Go!
Be the English Patient and venture into the Western Desert!.......2001-04-20
The Western Desert is least known for being anything but probably a large stretch of endless sand dunes between Egypt and Libya. However, if Medusa, Hercules, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, World War II, and the movie the English Patient means anything to you, then this book is finger on the pulse. Why? Because at one point in time they were all inhabitants of the Western Desert. Next to the Empty Quarter in the Saudi Arabia desert, it is one of the most arid places in the world and one of man's last frontiers. Bedouin caravans, travelers and ancient armies crossed these desert plains, at times completely disappearing into the sand. Poems and stories, handed from one generation to the next, speak of the adventures and hardship suffered in this desolate place. The ignorance that has made this place least known is changing now; recently a great discovery was made here. Thousands of ancient mummies were uncovered, most adorned with precious gold jewelry. Dubbed the Valley of the Golden Mummies, the area is now under intensive excavation and a tomb was opened and shown on the Discovery channel. As a result of increasd media attention more serious travelers are coming to this area of the world. There is minimal information to satisfy the information needs of these travelers and this book provides just the right recipe. The book covers a lot of history, geography, geology, route description, people, customs, and crafts. I have traveled the Western Desert from Cairo to the Libyan border ending at the Siwa Oasis some time ago, before this book came to light, and I can say that it would have been a wonderful travel companion. It has many many maps, illustrations, and GPS waypoints. Highly recommended for those interested in the desert, travelers, and Egyptologists. Only weakness is that the interior book design is somehow dull, photos are in black and white, small size and low resolution. There is nothing in color except the book cover. Nevertheless, you should not judge a book by its looks only, for a real traveler planning to emulate the English Patient and venture into the Western Desert, this is really all you need, useful information, concise text and updated maps. There are no nice pictorials here if this is what you are looking for. If you are looking for illustrative text about the work of modern Egyptologists in this part of the world this book will not help you, you are better off with "Valley of the Golden Mummies" by Zahi Hawass. Both books will be nice together if you're planning a trip to the Western Desert with a visit to the valley to see the mummies.
