Customer Reviews:
Best Book on the Islands.......2007-10-08
I have been to Oahu several times prior to obtaining this book. I found it to be most helpful, giving you all the places to visit. The description of the beaches, hikes, attractions, etc. is very accurate. This is an excellent book to plan a vacation to your island paradise trip.
Not my favorite of Doughty's books.......2007-09-07
We purchased this book because we were quite pleased with the Kauai and Maui books, but weren't as impressed with this book. This may be because our Oahu trip was our first to Hawaii with children, and these books aren't especially tailored to a family vacation. More descriptions of family-friendly events, more restaurant and hotel reviews and less really-off-the-beaten-path sites would have been preferred for our family vacation. However, if you are looking for a book that tells you more about the hidden Oahu, this is probably for you. As with the other books, the author is candid and fair.
A MUST for any Oahu vacation.......2007-08-21
By far, one of the best travel series I've read- I wish Wizard publications covered the entire world with their practical, tell-it-like-it-is approach to getting the most out of your time in the islands. The pictures were on par with the DK Eyewitness Guides (my favorite series until I stumbled upon this one!) and the maps were detailed and easy to follow. In addition to the fantastic reviews and recommendations in the book, the website provides additional information that is worth checking out, and that's entirely free! I would insist that any Hawaii traveler consider this Wizard Guide as an essential travel companion.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-08-07
Oahu Revealed was an excellent source of info for our vacation. We saved a lot of money and avoided some hassles based on the help from this book.
Highly recommended!
the most valuable thing I bought for our honeymoon.......2007-08-06
Torn and worn out now, this book has all your typical travel advice, really good maps too. However, the in-depth commentary on the sites and activities were excellent!!....Things I did not find in the other two books I purchased. I would reccommend this book to anyone. -Ken

Customer Reviews:
consider it GREAT!.......2007-08-10
We stayed two weeks in Lanikai which was perfect for launching our daytrips to other parts of the island. The authors were right, there were some of the best hikes in the world right here. Mt. Olympus being one of them, an all dayer. Definitely read the detailed directions they provide.
The Oahu Trailblazer took us away from the megafreeways and up to where the views were splendido. All the historic downtown Honolulu sites are described, there's a nice walking tour map inside and we even had time for a swim at Waikiki Beach that same day. But the prettier, less visited beaches were closer to our rented cottage and just a few hours away were surftown Waimea and Sunset and Turtle Bay (nice golf course). Oahu was full of surprises and we'll be returning for more exploring spring 2008. Flights are cheap and good package deals abound if we plan enough in advance. This guide is coming with us.
fun every day, rain or shine.......2007-03-31
Great buy. Our downtown Borders was selling the same book for $4.00 more then Amazon sells it for. It held up well through the sun and showers and was full of good information for all kinds of outings. The book lays out a whole variety of hikes and swimming possibilities organized according to where you happen to be. That way we made good use of our time with a morning hike and afternoon swim combo. We found Oahu is not just for shopping in Waikiki, it's drop dead beautiful the more you go north. Waimanalo Beach our favorite. Practical maps are also inside with numbers corresponding to the trailheads.
We already toured the Big Island with this series and next year Maui is on our agenda. We've already bought their Maui Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Paddle, Surf, Drive (Hawaiian Hiking Guides) from Amazon of course.
The WOW guide for Oahu.......2006-12-31
We bought this book for hikes and snorkeling (after reading the Sprout's great guides for Maui and Kauai) but wound up using it as our all around guide for Oahu Island. We literally would have been lost without it. If you're thinking of hitting Waikiki and the famous snorkeling bay around the corner, this is your ticket. Getting there before everyone else and watching the turtles was a lifetime experience.
This book is full of good tips and it's fun to read and so well organized. A great deal!
Exploring beautiful Oahu.......2006-12-24
We thoroughly enjoyed Maui with the Trailblazer series and chose to try their Oahu volume out since our transfer point was Honolulu. Again, major whirwind of fun, a great followup! Their trademark is organization and though our time was short, we got total immersion. We saw all the hotspots and snorkeled and hiked all the places in between. Their trail descriptions are crafted for all hiking levels and we got a taste for where we were going by reading all about it with our morning coffee.
We have two more islands yet to see and we'll be following the Trailblazer trail all the way.
The Oahu Trailblazer guide.......2006-09-30
We like the basic structure of these guidebooks. They boil all the information down into short paragraphs that detail the driving directions, degree of difficulty, mileage, trail highlights, dangers, in short just what you want to know before heading out. This is their newest and we've just used it and can say with confidence it did the job it promised. We saved Honolulu and Pearl Harbor for last when we wanted down time. For preparing for our vacations to Maui and Oahu, these books have been most valuable.

Great guide book.......2007-08-23
I just get back from Oahu for my engagement trip. I can say, all my 7-day trip is on this book, from attractives to restaurants. The informations are accurate and comprehensive. Highly recommended guide book.
A Must-Have Guide.......2007-03-22
My sister-in-law and I used this book daily on our trip to Oahu. We started referring to it as "the Bible"! Lots of info but not overwhelming. Fun tips on how to navigate popular tourist attractions. All information was accurate and up to date for our January 2007 trip. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Depends on the use.......2007-05-30
My sister is moving there and it has everything you need as far as bus routes, prices, restaurants, and the listings are mostly price oriented such as least expensive to top dollar and includes a ton of phone numbers. Not so much history or mountains to climb but it can plan your trip for you all around the island whether a week trip or more.
Frommer's Book of Lies.......2006-08-12
We just returned from visiting Oahu in August 2006. We found that the "new edition" is at least 3 years out of date. It is clear that the author has not set foot on Oahu or visited Waikiki in quite a while as many of her resturant picks have changed hands, hotels don't offer services listed and the parks have all changed prices and hours of operation. We laughingly called it "The Book of Lies," for its inept and incorrect information. You would be better off seeking information from the local cabbies and street vendors. Find another book and use this one for compost.
branching out.......2006-07-04
For the real basics, I give this book a five. Come in November when the crowds thin out. I've given this book alot of stars because it's a good hotel finder along with hotels.com. Even if you're not thinking of leaving the Honolulu area, you should also have the guide Oahu Trailblazer with you. It takes on what Fromer's leaves out and delivers a complete tour of the whole island. Who knows, once you get here you might get the urge to venture beyond Waikiki. Take the drive to Kahuku and sample some of the shrimp.
A good, basic guide for a first-time visitor.......2004-11-04
My husband and I bought this book for a recent vacation, and we found it very helpful. We used it to tool around the island in a rented car, see the sights in the Waikiki area, and snoop around Chinatown. It gives a good, broad overview to first-time visitors that will help you prioritize what you want to see on the island.
A few caveats - driving directions to Lanikai Beach are a bit lacking in this guide; fare for TheBus is now $2 per person, not $1.50; and the Lyon Arboretum was closed uring our visit. Sin of omission - Wo Fat's restaurant in Chinatown is a great dim sum place, but is not included in the guide. As always, call to check on guidebook facts before venturing out. Other than a few discrepancies such as this, we found the book to be fairly accurate and very informative.
Easy going vacation.......2004-10-18
I found this book made everything easy to find. Our daughter's wedding was our excuse to visit Oahu for the first time. Frommers made it easy to play tourist and wind our way through the streets of Honolulu without a hitch. Paid for itself many times over for its restaurant ratings alone. I personally give it high high marks for accuracy.

Nelles Maps.......2006-11-03
Thank goodness I finally found this Nelles Map a month before my trip to Oahu! It honestly was the only thorough map I found for this island in 8 months of searching both Hawaii visitor sites and book companies. This map gave great detail and was not so miniscule that I had to squint to read it. The only drawback (I felt) was the too large hard cover. The firmness of the cover was fine-it was just too large to squeeze into compact luggage pieces or vehicle cubbies. (This was my lone reason for withholding a star.)
side note-I had located the Kauai and Big Island sister maps months before and used all 3 maps daily on our trip. The only map I found to offer better detailing of downtown areas was the Hawaiian airlines map-and they only offered ones for Kauai and the Big Island. All that said, my Nelles maps are the ones I have kept for return trips to Hawaii.
Great Island directions.......2006-03-23
Having never been to Honolulu or Oahu the map was invaluable. We became completely confident because of the helpful map.
Helpful Map.......2005-07-08
This map was very helpful. The description is not very complete. Basically the map has very detailed areas, Honolulu, Laie, and Kaneohe, Kailua. If you want detailed roads in other areas there is only a general overview. But, overall very clear and got us around just dandy!
The Best Map Of Honolulu And Oahu Available.......2004-11-23
I have used several maps of Honolulu and Oahu, but without question this is the best of the bunch. Not only is this map detailed and current, it is logical and complete. There is an overall map of Oahu, and several smaller inset maps of key places including Honolulu, Waikiki, Kaneohe, the Mokapu Peninsula, Laie, and Mamala Bay (including the huge Ala Wai Harbor). The Honolulu map is very detailed and continues far enough to the West to cover the airport and the publicly accessible parts of Pearl Harbor. Note that this map, unlike many others, uses the traditional Hawaiian spellings complete with accents and pronunciation marks, which makes it the ultimate in accuracy, although when comparing it with many more anglicized works, the spellings may differ slightly.
This map is without question the best overall map for navigating the sometimes very convoluted (and busy) roads of Oahu: if I could only take one map to Oahu with me, this would be the one. I highly recommend this map to anyone traveling to Oahu.

Product Description
"Benjamin Franklin Dillingham fell off a rented horse, and the history of modern Hawai'i was changed forever. Dillingham was a New Englander, born on Cape Cod in 1844, and he went to sea at the age of 14. After a series of adventures - including capture by a Confederate raider - and a rapid rise in rank, he landed in Honolulu as first mate aboard the bark Whistler in 1864. He was 20. After breaking his leg in the topple from the horse, he was carried to the American Marine Hospital in Nu'uanu to heal. The Whistler sailed without him, and Dillingham was an ex-seafaring man, ashore for good. "After recuperating, he found work at a local hardware store. An entreprenurial spirit bubbled within, and in a few years he had borrowed some money and was the store's owner. He also married the daughter of a local missionary and started a family. Frank Dillingham's businesses - the hardware operation and later a large dairy - struggled with heavy obligations for decades, and he was constantly searching for a "big score" that would finally eradicate his debts and provide for his family. "That score was the Oahu Railway & Land Company, a narrow-gauge operation that established sugar as a phenomenally profitable crop on Oahu. The primary line headed west from the main station in downtown Honolulu, eventually stitching together sugar plantations in Aiea, Waipahu, Ewa, Waianae, Waialua, and Kahuku. A later branch wending its way to the center of the Island served the pineapple plantations around Wahiawa. For almost 60 years - from 1889 to 1947 - OR& L trundled both freight and passengers around the island, creating great fortunes not only for the Dillinghams, but for many others as well. This book is the story of that line." quarto (12.25x9.5"), color & b/w pictures, maps, topos, bibliography, appendices, rosters with extensive pictures and commentary, annual report data.
Customer Reviews:
The Oahu railway : packed with vintage photos, maps, charts, history.......2006-03-19
If you're a rail buff you'll already know most rail books focus on the mainland railways and give little recognition to Hawaii: to fill the gap choose NEXT STOP HONOLULU: THE STORY OF THE OAHU RAILWAYS & LAND COMPANY. You can't get any more comprehensive than NEXT STOP HONOLULU, which traces the growth of the Oahu Railway from its roots when a New Englander fell off a rented horse and was stranded in Hawaii to its establishment as an opportunity for the sugar cane industry to become a profitable crop on Oahu. It comes packed with vintage photos, color illustration, maps, charts, reproductions, and history tracing almost sixty years of OR&L achievements. A truly outstanding, definitive achievement.
Right Up There With Gerald Best!.......2006-01-14
Comprehensive, profusely illustrated history of one of the less well-known railways in the U.S. I lived on Oahu from 1947 to 1968 and knew the OR&L only from the occasional line of pineapple cars crossing Nimitz Highway from the harbor to the canneries. A few mispellings of Hawaiian words, but otherwise it's a treasure.
Next Stop Honolulu.......2005-05-09
'Next Stop Honolulu' is obviously a wonderful book for railroad aficionados. For me, although the book's principal subject is interesting (the explanation of how steam locomotives work on page 66 was the first one I've ever actually found understandable), it is the general facts about Hawaii and its history and local lore that are fascinating. This is a very interesting book, with lots of delightful illustrations, beautifully reproduced, which include old newspaper articles, photographs, maps, etc. For someone who hasn't read much about Hawaii since Michener, this was an engrossing read about the railway company that linked the sugar plantations in Oahu, but with lots of additional colorful detail. Anyone who likes Hawaii or railroad history would love this book.

Book Description
An exciting new voice richly and suspensefully evokes modern and ancient Hawaii...
When Storm Kayama walks into her lucrative Honolulu law firm one morning, she's shocked--and grieved--to find her adopted uncle at his desk, stiff and cold. Years before, Miles Hamasaki had fulfilled a promise to Storm's father and brought her to be raised with his own family. But, as questions surround Miles' death and her adopted family begins to close ranks, Storm suspects that he has been murdered.
Heading to the Big Island for a weekend escape from escalating pressures, she narrowly escapes a terrible accident. Storm takes refuge in the home of her Aunt Maile, a traditional Hawaiian healer, and Uncle Keone, a paniolo on the huge Parker Ranch. There she encounters a legend from her youth and a family totem, or 'aumakua, which Aunt Maile promises will protect her. As Storm struggles to heal her own childhood wounds and bring justice to Hamasaki's killer, she also comes to grip with the rifts in her own life and culture.
From the winding cane roads of Hamakua to the seedy side of Honolulu's Chinatown, with a deft juxtaposition of a bustling Honolulu against the island's legends and wild beauty, Atkinson reveals a Hawaii that few visitors ever see.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2003-05-16
Storm Kayama is turning her rebellious past into a promising future. She's working hard to get her law degree while clerking for her adoptive father, lawyer Miles Hamasaki, on the island of Honolulu. Miles was her real father's best friend. When Storm's father died, Miles welcomed her into his home and his heart.
Now, the unthinkable has happened. Miles has been found dead in his office. Storm begins to notice things that don't make sense. She decides to find out what really happened. As she gets closer to the truth, her own life is threatened.
Deborah Turrell Atkinson has crafted a superb novel, set beautifully in the middle of the mystery and myth of Hawaii. Ancient superstitions and modern realities wage a battle for justice in an exciting story that will keep readers guessing until the end.
I highly recommend PRIMITIVE SECRETS and look forward to more from this talented author.
Interesting Hawaii elements--very slow start.......2003-01-27
Fresh from passing her bar exam, lawyer Storm Kayama is dealt a shock when her foster father and mentor is found dead in his office. While the other partners seem happy to keep her busy, Storm senses that something is not right. When she starts to investigate, her foster father's secretary is killed and someone tries to run storm off the highway. With the help of what appears to be a Hawaiian god, Storm survives, but she is more determined than ever to find the truth.
Author Deborah Turrell Atkinson writes convincingly of a Hawaii that ballances between its ancient traditions and the glitz of modern life. The HMO patient suffering from cancer and receiving both modern and traditional treatments is both important and symbolic of the broader issues that Storm, and many Hawaiians face in their daily lives.
PRIMITIVE SECRETS starts slow, really involving the reader only in the second half of the novel. I had a hard time identifying with Storm and her behavior and reactions. Although incompetent police work is standard in the mystery genre, it is difficult to believe that the Hawaiian police would be as negligent as portrayed by Atkinson. Fortunately, Atkinson turns up the suspense in the second half of the book, drawing the reader to a strong conclusion.
Primitive Secrets, an Exciting Journey for the Reader.......2002-12-03
'Primitive Secrets' was a treat. The characters were real, and I liked them immensely.(Let's face it, if you don't like the characters, you don't care what happens to them.)
The plot moved fast, and had several interesting layers, so it kept me turning pages. There were several very exciting sequences, like a car chase on a rainy, winding rural road at night, and some very funny events, which I won't divulge.
One of the things that sets this book apart was that Atkinson took me to Hawaii. I felt that I knew Hawaii's people, past and present. I became part of an exotic cultural mix of customs and beliefs, and traveled to places tourists don't get to go.
If you like Tony Hillerman's mysteries set among the Navajos in Arizona, or Dana Stabenow's mysteries set in Alaska, you'll love 'Primitive Secrets'!
Hawaiian murder mystery.......2002-11-09
If you've been in the mood for a Hawaiian vacation but couldn't afford the airfare, Primitive Secrets is the perfect escape. Not only do you get the experience of visiting Hawaii, but a suspenseful murder mystery is thrown in too. As if this wasn't enough, there's also a romance brewing.
Ms. Atkinson is an excellent writer who has created a very engaging amateur detective in Storm Kayama, an attorney who is just beginning her practice in her uncle's law firm. When she finds her uncle dead at his desk, the adventure begins.
Sights, smells and tastes of Honolulu are skillfully woven together with the homeopathic remedies and folklore of the Big Island to give this story dimension and flavor.
A great read.
Primitive Secrets.......2002-11-05
Who killed Miles Hamasaki, and why? When Storm Kamaya, a young law clerk with a troubled past, sets out on the trail to discover the truth behind the death of her beloved uncle, the reader joins hands with Storm to experience every breathtaking twist and turn down the dark alleys of Honolulu and through the cane fields of the Big Island. Atkinson draws us in like a spider beckoning a fly with her evocative descriptions of the Hawaiian islands and ancient Hawaiian legends, as Storm, along with the reader, discovers a web of betrayal spun by those she trusts most. Lovers of mysteries will be captivated by this tale of the darker side of paradise, and will surely want to follow Storm Kamaya down the road through another adventure in Hawaii. We should all hope that Primitive Secrets is only the first of Storm's stories, with many more to come.
