The book has clear maps that DEF. help in getting around. The subway locations were clearly marked, and you get a close view of each section of the city. My only complaint is that it always seems like the restaurant, or store, or coffee shop, etc. that I am looking for is never in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for NYC- the only one you will need!.......2007-09-12

This book has saved my neck on more than one occasion. I use it daily to get around the city. It has everything you need. We liked it so much we bought an extra one for our guests when they come to visit- don't want to be parted from it. Never know when you will need to find a great restaurant in mid-town or look up the closest post office or bank or library.... Not to mention the great fold out map of the metro at the back of the book. BRILLIANT buy this book and you won't need to waste any money on others.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-08-24

I think this book(let) is just awesome. It comes in a size of my pocket-agenda and the many detailed maps (depending on the points of interesent you want it to be shown) are a great helper. I'm going to NYC soon and not as a tourist, but as a visitor, so I really don't need to wait in line in front of Empire State Building - I'll rather browse this book!

5 out of 5 stars Not for Tourist.......2007-07-20

This is a great book if you are moving to NY. Great size - useful maps and great things you need to know if you are staying any length of time.

5 out of 5 stars Enormously Helpful..........2007-07-17

This is by far one of the most useful products I've purchased of late. I recently travelled to the city for the second time, and decided to get this in preparation. My friends came to rely on my "little black book," and I was constantly whipping it out...to check the subway map, to look for the nearest restaurant, or to check out museum info. As I begin to prepare for moving to the city next year, I'm not letting this guide out of my sight.

4 out of 5 stars Brooklyn - Not for Tourists Guide.......2007-01-10

This is one the best map books - for those who really don't want to deal with the hassle of opening and refolding a map and looking like a tourist. Besides small manageable maps of Brooklyn neighborhoods, they include the different services (bar, restaurant, food market, etc.) that are in the neighborhood. The restaurant list is by no means complete - just a short list - maybe they need to get together with Zagat's? but that's really the only downside. Also the subway line map is imposed over the street map. This really is a big help when trying to figure out how to get there.

Book Description

Hopefully, you're not one of the many people in New York City who thinks "Queens" is a colloquial local term for "airport". We're proud of JKF in the south and its northern brother La Guardia, but there's a heck of a lot more going on in Queens and we've got the guide to prove it- we'll get you fed, watered and having fun all over New York's largest borough.

Queens is one of the most multicultural places on the entire planet, with representatives from all six inhabited continents calling it home (and if the Queens Zoo in Flushing Meadows- Corona Park ever gets penguins- all seven). Head to Flushing for Asian, try Indian in Jackson Heights, Astoria does Greek best, eat authentic Caribbean food in Jamaica, and experience all things Irish in Rockaways. If you don't care for culture- and museums like P.S. 1, MoMA Queens, the Hall of Science- do a pub crawl along Queens Boulevard in Woodside/ Sunnyside, Austin Street in Forest Hills, or Bell Boulevard in Bayside.

Still not enough? The QZ has something for everyone. Sports fans know Queens is home to the US Open tennis, Shea stadium, the St. John's University Red Storm, and the ponies at Aqueduct Racetrack. Lovers of the great outdoors can enjoy boating and fishing on Jamaica Bay or Little Neck Bay, hikes through acres of preserved wetlands in Alley Pond Park, and miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches on the south side of Queens.

Great quick reference guide...not a lot of in depth detail, but easy to carry around and great information.

1 out of 5 stars Generally unhelpful. If I was the editor..........2005-08-31

I would make a lot of changes to this book. At heart, it's a fabulous idea to make a guidebook for people who have moved to a city and need to know a lot of important stuff that tourism books don't get into. In practice, it doesn't seem worth the money, for a few reasons:

This book is way too Manhattancentric to be considered a book about "New York." The book should be called "NFT: Manhattan" in my opinion. If you live in one of the other boroughs, this book will not be helpful.

Also, instead of giving the address of all the listings, it would be more helpful to always give an intersection and a subway stop, which is always more helpful in the city.

Finally, there isn't a whole lot of information in here that you can't get on Google Local. To make it worth buying, the editors should consider a rating system or something that shows that the people who put this book together have actually tried out some of these restaurants, stores, bars, parks, etc. I noticed that there is a way to become a member online that will allow readers to do this, and I think that's a great idea. A website that provides a place to post real opinions from people who live in these places would be more helpful.

5 out of 5 stars a reliable guide.......2005-08-20

higly recommended for those who know a bit of nyc! i always bring it along just in case im in area that im not familiar with. or with tourists who need some help.

5 out of 5 stars A *must* for newcomers to the city!.......2005-07-20

I was frustrated by the books for people moving to NYC--I'm a single, 20-something that isn't looking to buy a place, put a kid in school, or very interested in property taxes. I also wasn't a tourist wanting to "see New York City as New Yorkers do". I just wanted to be able to get around the city without looking like an idiot!

This book is perfect for anyone unfamiliar with living in the city. Note: this is NOT a good guide for tourists, unless you're interested in the nitty gritty--locations of grocery stores, ATMs, post offices, etc. I do have to agree with the other review--this book is ideal for those moving to Manhattan. The outer boroughs get short shrift--especially Staten Island and the Bronx. As a Manhattanite, though, this book has been invaluable to me!

I've met so many new arrivals to the city that have purchased NFT and have great stories about how it's saved them from getting lost and confused in their new neighborhoods. The maps are especially useful because they are broken down to show you exactly where the subway stops are.

Of course, NFT can't have *every* restaurant and shop listed in it. But it gives you a running start to discover those not listed in the guide. The commentary (in tiny font at the top of each page) is HILARIOUS too! Every time I take the A train to JFK, I think of the NFT writer who described the 45-min. ride as a great opportunity to finish up "War and Peace."

So if you or a loved one is coming to live in Manhattan/recently moved here, buy this book! It will help make you/them feel much more at home in a city that can be very overwhelming to a newcomer.

3 out of 5 stars NFT Guide to Manhattan.......2005-07-20

I give this three stars not because the book is bad but because I personally didn't find it useful. If I lived in Manhattan, I would seriously think this the best guide ever. But I live in Brooklyn, where, the guide seems to say, we don't have bus routes, hospitals, or even ZIP codes.
I think the book is terribly cute and just the right size, so I can't fault the editors for saving space. And I too disagree with the reviewer who said this book is for tourists; I think it's best for people who are relative newcomers to Manhattan. I can see it being very helpful in apartment hunting as well. It gives the location of everything from post offices and police stations to bagel and coffee shops. But only in Manhattan. So don't bother buying this guide if you live in one of the outer boroughs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for tourists and New Yorkers alike.......2006-11-20

NFT is a fantastic resource for anyone planning a trip to NYC. The book is not a traditional tour guide. There are no "top 5" or "must lists" on this book. Instead, you get a book full of detailed maps of NYC along with a listing of restaurants, shops, pharmacies, newsagents, coffee shops, tourist sites, museums, etc. etc. etc. During our trip, my husband was amazed that I knew exactly where to find the nearest Starbucks, or where to go to pickup the subway to Times Square, or where the closest bookstore was, little knowing that I had this handy little book. It also has maps of some of the most popular venues, museums and sights, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yankees Stadium, and the like. What particularly amused me was that as we were walking around the campus of NYU, we popped into a local newspaper shop that catered to students and found that this book was the only New York tour guide/map for sale.

I highly recommend this little black book to anyone contemplating a trip to NYC. I am big planner so I load myself with tour guides to help me plan our trip. And even with all the planning, I knew that I only needed one book to take to our trip and NFT was it. As the saying goes, "don't leave home without it."

5 out of 5 stars Well needed and used book. Get this if you are visiting NY.......2006-09-27

This book is amazing. If you actrully use it, you will find it indespensible. The good points.
The subway map in the back is crucial. Especially once you see the ones the ground transportation people will give you. The map has stops and transfer points.
The detailed maps in the begining have tones of info and are repeated with diffrent info as to not clutter them. The bus routes and landmarks are key here.
The plethora of other information in the rest of the books is interesting and helpful. It's divided nicely and has information that could prove useful in a jam.
The bad
Not having a detailed map of the huge maze like central park. Is needed. Wait. My bad there is one in the "parks and Places" section. Nevermind.
Mostly the city is shown to great detail. The outer bouroghs like queens, broklyn, the bronx ect. go un-noticed. If you are spending a great deal of time out there, maybe something else is best for you. but if your in the city this is great.
Resturants are great to show you the diverse flavor of the city. But, if your on a budget and looking for a Mcd's then your out of luck. By the way if you are going to the met and hope there's fast food close by. nope. Not close at all. The nearist fast food is six blocks away. Of course like the book says there are plenty of street vendors.

Well thats it. For the bad should not stop you from getting this book. It's easy to carry around and very useful. Before you go to NY you should look this book over and read the many sections in it. It would only help you more that way. I spent a week in new york and this was indespencible. I used it every day and took it everywhere. The only time I felt lost was when I exited a subway and had no ideal which way I was facing and which direction to walk in.

4 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.......2006-06-03

My brother-in-law, who lives on Manhattan's upper West side, pulled out his NFT when we met for lunch in the Financial District. Immediately, I leafed through the whole thing, looking for info that I needed for my 5-day stay in NYC. It had everything - subway & bus routes, restaurants, bike paths, a decent map of Central Park - in a small profile, easily fitting into a jacket or outside pocket. One of the things I disliked about travelling in NYC is having to pull out a map when trying to navigate. This, to me, simply announces "I'm a TOURIST," which in certain areas may be considered undesirable. But the small profile of the NFT makes it easy (and quick) to focus in on the part of town your are in, as well as the part of town where you want to go.

Right after lunch, I found one in a bookstore - but in the future will think ahead to order off Amazon and save a couple of $$.

My only complaints are pathetically minor. One, the market and restaurant listings did not include a phone number, requiring access to a phone book or another call to directory assistance. Two, it wasn't always clear exactly where the subway stops were located. The 1-2-3 at 72nd Street is pretty obvious, the 3 at 110th was not.

Grab the NFT and travel swiftly and safely.

4 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver, and Easy to Use for Tourists Too!.......2006-04-13

This book saved my life when I was visting a friend in New York. The subway system can be complicated, but this book does a great job of breaking down the city as well as offering locations of restaurants, theatres, museums, and more. Includes a mini subway/bus map that is really helpful. As long as you know where you want to go, this book can get you there. The best way to use the book is for planning for a day ahead and figuring out routes, etc. Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Overwhelming!.......2006-03-13

This small book is very comprehensive. I feel very overwhelmed with all of the information that's covered in this book. I haven't moved to NYC yet. That's the only reason for the 4 out of 5 stars. I don't think I will really know how good this book is until I'm there. But, with this book in hand, I can't imagine getting lost in Manhattan.

5 out of 5 stars NFT in Crain's New York Business.......2002-05-08

"Not For Tourists Guide to Manhattan is nothing less than a sleekly designed, full-color guide to everything from the lighting schedule of the Empire State Building to a map of Central Park, to Web addresses and phone numbers for ferry services, to full breakdowns on the 10 branches of the Long Island Railroad (with a helpful note about the LIRR's policy on pets).

'Manhattan is an enormous city, but it's really like 2 separate cities,' explains [NFTs] Rob Tallia... 'If you go out of the neighborhood that you know, it's like going to another city.'

Is the book the next Zagat Survey...? It's certainly the goal..."

5 out of 5 stars NFT in Travel Holiday.......2002-05-08

"Wouldn't it be great to be able to visit a city and get around like it's your own hometown? Well, now you can--in New York and L.A., no less. The 2002 Not For Tourists Guide to Manhattan and Not For Tourists Guide to Los Angeles are little black books that are the keys to these cities. The books provide information that is vital to anyone new to the city, and, as the titles suggest, are great toos for native dwellers as well.

"The Not For Tourists series is a new kind of guidebook. It combines the graphic functionality of street and subway maps with user-friendly information, like restaurant listings, shops, and sports arenas. The neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide lists pharmacies, gas stations, post offices, ATMs--the kinds of things you need to know to make the most of the cities."

5 out of 5 stars NFT in Foreward This Week.......2002-05-08

"Every year I come upon a new travel or city guide concept. NFT is one of the best and elegantly thought out sourcebook ideas--each designed in a format suitable for the city covered--listing major city resources for people who live there (where to get bagels or find a gas station in any NYC neighborhood, for instance) with great maps. So far they have Manhattan and Los Angeles. DC, San Francisco, and Boston are next."

5 out of 5 stars NFT in Business Traveler.......2002-05-08

"How often do you find yourself sitting in your hotel room flipping through the local restaurant guide, newspaper, yellow pages and the hotel's complimentary visitor guide? If the answer is always, then it's time to pick up the latest edition of the 2002 Not For Tourists guide to Manhattan or Los Angeles--a complete information-packed city guidebook, helping you navigate these two fascinating cities in no time.

"Partners Jane Pirone and Rob Tallia launched Not For Tourists in 2000--breaking the mold of ordinary city guidebooks--including essential information to spend your time most efficiently.

"Whether you are a resident or just traveling through, Not For Tourists offers readers up-to-date information on each neighborhood in Manhattan and Los Angeles, including boroughs. In addition to detailed neighborhood maps, the books feature subway and bus information, as well as essentials such as locations for post offices, 24-hour pharmacies, landmarks and even popular bagel stores.

"Facts about New York City including the Empire State Building's lighting schedule, airport information and maps, rail information, specific ATM machine locators, hotels and FedEx locations pack the 110-page guidebook. There's also a nifty subway pull-out map, so you can maneuver the city's underground system with no problem."

5 out of 5 stars NFT in Time Out New York.......2002-05-08

"A sleep-looking pocket-sized black book of maps, charts, listings and commentary that's apparently too sleek-looking for out of towners (but certainly useful for them), this user's guide in Manhattan covers the borough by neighborhood (even, thankfully, the ones above 110th Street) and points out such useful information as the locations of movie theaters, video-rental places, ATMs, and liquor stores."

5 out of 5 stars All the key stuff and none of the garbage.......2001-07-15

Broken down by neighborhoods, this pocket-sized guide is oriented towards those living in Manhattan who just need to know where things are or how to get to them. For each area, it shows ATMs (including the bank so you know if you'll pay a fee), Bagels, Landmarks, 24-hour pharmacies and gas stations, hospitals, police stations, post offices,, schools, libraries, marketplaces, bars, cafes, gyms, hardware and liquor stores, movie theatres, pet stories, a few restaurants, video rentals, car rentals and parking -- practically everything you could want to know as a resident or visitor. Then the book continues with layouts of the stadiums, major parks, World Trade Center and their services. At the back, there are also lists of the bookstores, FedEx locations, theatres, dog runs, art galleries, 24-hour services, parking rules, ferries and airlines, and almost anything else you might to look up regardless of neighborhood. I found its directions for the best way to get to/from the three major airports useful enough to justify buying the book even without everything else. Have given this book to a number of people as The One to carry around to get oriented or to have at home for quick use. If you love Manhattan, you have to have this book.

5 out of 5 stars The only useful guide to New York for EVERY situation.......2001-02-09

Unlike many other specialized New York City guides, this is one book that you truly should not leave home without. It manages to convey light-hearted commentary on a city its residents love to hate, while still communicating vital information such as ATM locations, FedEx drop boxes, and even a few select restaurants. No matter what your plans are in the big city, chances are you'll refer to this guide at least once. A necessity for any Manhattanite, and even tourists.

5 out of 5 stars Most detailed, reliable yet inconspicuous.......2003-02-22

When I travel, I buy two kinds of guidebooks: one that offers a lot of history and details about places to visit and another one that fits in my pocket and offers the most detailed maps. I study the first book prior to my trip or in my hotel and use the latter one to navigate places, because I hate blatantly giving myself away as a tourist as I unfold a huge map in the middle of the street. "Not For Tourists Guide to NYC" was just perfect because it had all of the streets illustrated by neighborhoods and included street numbers as well. For each neighborhood, there are three maps: one that offers a list of places to eat or entertain, one that shows essential services like police station or the post office, and finally one that shows the area with subway stops and parking spots. In addition to its small size, the cover was entirely black and chic, which made me feel comfortable pulling it out on the streets or even on the subway. It was my first extended visit to NYC last weekend and my friend and I gave directions to five or six tourists/New Yorkers in three days! Everyone who asked for directions was very impressed with my NFT Guide, as were my friends who live in the city. I plan to relocate to NYC later this year and am confident that my NFT Guide will help me get acquainted to the city as quickly as possible. If you are like me and want accurate directions while blending in with the natives, I highly recommend that you bring a copy of the NFT Guide with you. Since this book mainly consists of highly detailed maps only, I recommend that you also buy another guidebook that offers you background history and/or information on sightseeing, if you want to know info such as museum hours of operation, history of certain buildings, anecdotes, etc. I just hope that NFT brings more guidebooks on other cities in the USA and beyond!

1 out of 5 stars Not for Tourists or Anyone Who Knows and Loves Brooklyn.......2006-03-02

While the alleged intent of this Guide is commendable, it only covers recently gentrified neighborhoods. Unfortunately for Brooklyn and for true Brooklynites, what is important to the onward and upward group of society is not a true measure of what this great borough is really about. The only good part of the book is the map; otherwise, a BIG disappointment!

1 out of 5 stars NFT Pocket Guide to ONLY A SMALL PART OF Brooklyn.......2004-06-27

As a person that somewhat knows their way around Brooklyn and has recently moved there, I found this book to be grossly incomplete in content. I was expecting more, as far as the area that it covered. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the NFT Guides, they are usually a great resource for locals (please know that I also own a copy of NFT Guide to New York City, which I LOVE, and find extremely useful). As vast and expansive of an area that Brooklyn is, this book only covers a mere seven little neighborhoods along the west edges of Brooklyn (Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights/Downtown/DUMBO, Fort Greene, Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill/Carroll Gardens, Park Slope/Prospect Heights, and Bay Ridge). Unless you frequent one of those neighborhoods of Brooklyn, don't bother buying this book. As well put together as the NFT-NYC guide was, I expected this one to be just as information-packed; however, it failed miserably by giving info for only a few select areas of a borough that would be the 4th largest city in the U.S, if it stood alone as a city, and is home to some 2.5 million residents. Hopefully, NFT Guide-Brooklyn editors will think about the rest of us that live in the many other neighborhoods of Brooklyn when they come out with their 2nd edition.

4 out of 5 stars Not supposed to be historical.......2004-05-26

This guide is....NOT FOR TOURISTS. There isn't supposed to be history or commentary. It's for those of us who live here who wonder if our bank is in this neighborhood, etc.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-07

I was rather disappointed by this "guide"; it's simply a collection of names & addresses, a teeny bit of commentary, and a map printed on not-very-durable paper.

I would suggest passing this "guide" by; get a copy of "The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn" for history & background, and a "Streetwise Brooklyn" map -- or just use Google.
