great buy.......2007-05-14
Traveling without a lonely planet is a waste of time. I would rate this guides as the best. I love that you know what to expect when you arrive to a place which is listed in the guide. I like the extra reading about history, and facts of the country. Great buy!!
Not as good as Moon Handbook.......2007-01-27
I bought both the Moon Handbook (Christopher Baker, 4th ed.) and the Lonely Planet guide (Sainsbury, 4th ed.). I haven't been to Cuba, but the Moon guide is a pleasure to read, it's nearly twice the length of the Lonely Planet guide, the maps are better, it goes into more depth on places and also on the general history, the photos are better, etc.
Lonely Planet-Cuba.......2007-01-10
this is good for all-in-one book.
But several big mistakes...
You'd better to take another substitution guide book

Good book but big.......2007-07-23
In general this is a good book and it seems up to date. For Havana this book is better than the Lonely Planet and has better maps and more information about things and places to see. The downside is the size. For me the Lonely Planet book could have done the job alone and it was only half the size of the this one.
Not an easy to use book.......2007-06-06
It was the first time I used a Moon Handbook for my traveling.
The information in this book is good but is not arranged in a convenient way for a traveler.
Maps are not easy to use and not detailed, on top of that they are scattered around the book making it uncomfortable to flip from one to another.
The history and background of Cuba is good and detailed but adds weight to the book which will significantly affect your small backpack (I would have paid extra to have the book in two sections).
The best travel book available for ALL you need in Cuba.......2007-05-26
This up to date and concise travel guide covers absolutely everything you would need to know about Cuba- the poeple, economy, goverenment, where to go ,what to see and how to do everything and what not to do.Unbelievably complete in every way.Forget Fodors or Frommers-this is all you will need.
J Baillie, USA.
Amazing detail!.......2007-05-13
I heard this author interviewed recently by Rick Steves and his unbridled enthusiasm for Cuba (as it is today) really tempted me to go. His book gives advice about places to see if you only have a limited time (and, as tourists, we only have limited time) and the considerations for Americans about how to go legally are very practical. The book has web sites to use to reserve the required first 3 nights in Cuba and tips on where to stay, what the currency is, and all the things you'd want to know about any first-world country ... and he adds honest comments about the poor infrastructure and the poverty in the country.
Good Job.......2007-03-09
I've literally been around the world backpacking with Lonely Planet guides and like them a lot for budget travel. This is my first experience with Moon and I like this one better. I also ordered the Lonely Planet Cuba guide at the same time and they were released in October and November, '06 so they're comparable in that sense. The Moon is a little heavier which is a consideration if you're traveling light, but that's not insurmountable.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully presented if obviously biased.......2004-10-27
DK produces the most arguably beautiful travel books currently available. The maps, graphics, architectural renderings, photographs and overall layout are beyond reproach and most appealing and informative. Why not five stars? I'm not sure where the blame lies, be it with the writers or editors, but this guide is deeply flawed in its biased content. Though not openly sympathetic to the island's communist government, it is nevertheless more than obvious that the person(s) responsible, are more than a little enamored with that country's socio-political ideology. In describing pre-revolutionary Cuba, the guide takes a cynical stance, perpetuating the myth that Cuba was nothing more than an American subsidized den of iniquity, populated by gangsters, prostitutes, gamblers and grown ineffective with rampant corruption and illiteracy. Though all these things were certainly true, the book fails to provide a balanced perspective of that period in the country's history and that's where its inherent failure lies. The Cuban revolution, though tragic, horrible and seemingly endless, is a part of World history in general and Cuban history in particular, and, therefore, should not be ignored, but by the same token it need not be given such idolatry treatment in a travel guide, which, in my opinion, should be an unbiased reference tool, meant to educate the traveler on a country, its history and people in a clear, concise and informative manner, free of personal prejudices and/or beliefs. This guide is filled with non-stop descriptions of revolutionary monuments, sites, people, and history. That in and of itself would be fine if weren't done so with such obvious appreciation for all that it represents. In describing Che, the author writes "Though Che suffered from asthma, he had an iron will, loved books as well as sports, and had a great spirit of sacrifice, he could appreciate beauty and was a perfectionist but had a sense of humour. He was a man of action who also found time to meditate on reality and write." One would think the author was describing Robin Williams and not one of the 20th century's most controversial figures. Though he certainly may have been all the things described in the book, it doesn't give a complete and accurate portrayal of the man. That was one example, but the book is plagued with socialist fawning that ultimately proves to be an ineffectual tool. Though the author is free to appreciate, love, praise, support, condemn, ridicule whatever he/she may choose, be it political, religious, artistic, etc. or a combination thereof, it should not be done through a travel guide. It's a genuine shame because, otherwise, from an aesthetic perspective, there's just nothing out there that even comes close.
Book Description
This Rough Guide is the most up-to-date, full-length guide to one of the CaribbeanÂ's most compelling destinations. The authorsÂ' twenty-four Âthings not to miss present a selective taste of the countryÂ's highlights; fine colonial buildings, stunning scenery, outdoor activities and cultural entertainment. The guide is full of informed descriptions and accurate listings of the best bars, restaurants and music venues to be seen at, from the lively city of Havana to the seaside resorts of Cayo Coco and Guardalavaca. Each listing is pinpointed on clear, easy-to-use maps and plans. There is well-written background on the countryÂ's turbulent history and detailed essays on Cuban sport, music, and wildlife.

needs updating. Wouldn't buy again.......2007-03-30
This guide needs serious updating. US$$ are not the preferred foreign currency in Cuba now, and hadn't been for a couple of years already when this edition was published. Not impressed with the detail work either. The Moon publication for Cuba is better than either this, or the Lonely Planet books.

Book Description
During the course of an exile that began in 1965, Cabrera Infante has taken part in each and every one of the controversies that have arisen since Fidel Castro took hold of Cuba. Mea Cuba recounts an event that has often repeated itself during the twentieth century: the story of yet another dictatorship that silences, represses, lies and murders; and the story of all the talented individuals that have been condemned in a battle of propaganda alive to this day. Key figures in the Island's tragedy and its literary world file through the pages of this book. Mea Cuba is the most important anthology on Cuban politics since José Martí's.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for Castro apologists.......2004-12-19
This collection of essays and short pieces by Guillermo Cabrera Infante was not only educational to me (in the sense that it introduced me to many of Cuba's top writers, poets and artists), but also eye opening in the way in which it opened yet another mental file to store away the immense brutalities that Castro has caused upon all segments of the Cuban population.
It is sad to read about the suicides of many of Castro's most heroic Revolutionary supporters (such as Yeye Santamaria), as well as broken poets and writers.
Guillermo Cabrera Infante's books drives home, like a nail being pounded into a hand, the brutal and malignant nature of Fidel Castro, equally distributed among friends and foes alike. It is a must read for students of Cuban history from the viewpoint of an insider.
Mea Cuba or the World's Guilt.......2001-11-24
In this book Cabrera Infante takes us by the hand through the history of Cuba, past and present, in a masterful way. As a growing teenager in Cuba myself in the sixties, I can "see" again all that happened in the beautiful island-archipelago from a richer, most understandable perspective than when I was there and saw things take place, but did not fully understand them: The witchhunt against all intellectuals who dared "think" what was not sanctioned by the totalitarian state and its main disease: Castroenteritis ! The repression against "hippies", "Beatle Lovers", homosexuals, singers and anyone who could challenge the Caribbean Nazi-Stalinism. (It made me remember my "underground" listening to the Beatles!).
An excellent, deep analysis of causes and consequences, of life in internal and external exile and very sharp chronicles about the lives of poets, writers, politicians and "men with many exes decorations", i.e. exminister, exambassador, exrevolutionary, experson, etc. Incredibly good use of the Spanish language, worthy of the prize Cabrera Infante recently earned: The Cervantes Prize of the Spanish language! I highly recommend this book for lovers of true history and of the Spanish language!

Customer Reviews:
Irresponsible!.......2001-02-20
I must say I agree with Cramer when it comes to the wealth of Cuban culture. However I have a few concerns about this book. A most shocking part of this book is what is not in it. While it is true that Cuban citizens have no right to bear arms since all weapons were confiscated at the start of the revolution, gun violence is still a factor to consider in Cuba. Consider the case of Joachim Løvschall a Danish student learning Spanish in Cuba who was shot in the back and killed by Cuban state security with an AK-47... In addition, I did not care to hear about how JoAnne Chesimard aka "Asaka Shakur" a fugitive from justice, convicted of killing a NJ state trooper, had learned to adapt to life in Cuba. By sharing the story of Ms. Chesimard Cramer lends credence to her "story" of persecuted victim. In addition, Cramer says he will be balanced but by mentioning the story of Ms. Chesimard an allegedly former political prisoner in the US and not mentioning the plight of dissidents in Cuba (such as Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet... his commitment falls through. The US Department of State has suggestions not mentioned in Culture Shock for those wanting to visit Cuban schools and universities...
A Great Read.......2000-09-26
I bought this book after I fell in love with the Buena Vista Social Club series and thus Cuba. It is difficult to find unbiased reporting on life in Cuba because most people have very strong feelings about this island. Cramer carefully considers all opinions but actually talks to the people who live there. He doesn't just interview those who love Castro -- in fact, most think Castro should step down. He interviews people who feel that Cuba is racist and those who feel that the "social experiment" has eliminated racism. The book is very intellectually honest which is rare any work but especially one on Cuba. Cramer demonstrates why he is horserace betting's most effective writer. He can teach while he tells amazing stories.
Cramer has written a fascinating look at an amazing island.
Gain insight *before* you go!.......2000-05-11
Culture Shock Cuba really did it for me. Any imaginable situation you get yourself in while visiting Cuba is mentioned. Coming from a Northern European culture there was just a lot for me to understand, if I didn't want to behave like a total weirdo. It is an easy and fun to read book I absolutely recommend.
Amazon.com
The thought of Cuba conjures images and associations with Castro politics and contraband cigars, but a visit reveals more: vibrant hummingbirds, corral-colored flamingos, a profusion of insect life, and miles of sugarcane. The Cuba Handbook tells the oft-neglected details of Cuba's history, from slave trading to the U.S. embargo. But like the sidebar on Cuban cigars, the information is merely an aside, for this is a practical book: you'll find out how to gain entrance, where to stay, and what to eat, plus the scoop on all of the beaches, Hemingway memorials, and Revolution museums you could desire. There's sailing and golf, bird watching and scuba diving, and Cuban baseball. There's ballet, cabarets, and the ubiquitous beat of salsa throbbing in the night air. A vivid, engaging Cuba, peopled by Cubans justly renowned for their warmth, awaits.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, but..........2006-08-17
This is an excellent thoroughly researched, detailed book as stated in other reviews.
However, in the very lengthy and informative history and pre-reading section, the author's bias against Castro permeates his writing.
Thus he presents a biased viewpoint; he discusses more the inefficiencies of the revolution rather than the advantages.
He does warn us subtly of his bias however.
The best thing would just be to go to cuba and see for yourself.
The Definitive Cuban Guidebook!.......2005-02-22
Chris Baker knows Cuba intimately. This guidebook is hands down better than the others (in fact, forget Lonely Planet on Cuba - trust me). It contains a brief history of culture and politics (the two entwined in this country) as well as in-depth coverage of the sites you want to see.
Cuba is not a country where information is readily obtained. This writer shows he's knows his stuff, and has done years of homework. Read it closely.
What you will need to supplement this guide are three things:
1. A list of "casa particulars" or private rooms in private homes. The ones listed in Moon are already too popular and nearly impossible to get a reservation. (There are websites that will help you with this, or just ask a cab driver in Cuba to show you a few homes.)
2. Restaurants. Moon does not include many of the the newer, better, private restaurants. No one goes to Cuba for the food, but nothing is worse than overpaying for a mediocre meal. Ask around for the good places, or do a search on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree web postings.
3. Clubs and bars. Some of the ones listed are institutions, but in Cuba the nightlife venues changes constantly. Ask locals, don't waste your money at some of the tourist traps mentioned in Moon.
Have a good time!
It helped me put into words what eyes were witnessing!.......2004-07-14
I've never gone on an overseas adventure without a guide book, and usually they are good for a few phone numbers and museum hours, but mostly end up being dead weight in your pack. This book on Cuba was like a lifeline during my adventure in Fidel's homeland. Anyone who has been to this pearl of the caribbean know's the social, political and economical ocean that is the Cuba of today is 100,000 leagues deep, and as a foreigner you feel as though you are caught, tumbling, in a wave not knowing which way is up. This book helps to make sense of Cubas past, while helping you to understand the nuances that hint to its uncertain future. A true pleasure to explore, with my Moon's book in hand!
The best travel guide for Cuba.......2003-08-08
This is the most extensive and best written travel guide for Cuba. It covers everything you can see there. If it doesn't list some places, that means it's nothing to do there. The guide is a bit outdated, especially the restaurant sections. In such cases we consulted the Rough Guide to Cuba, which is more up-to-date, but covers much less than a Moon Handbook. I hope it will be updated soon.
Exhaustive.......2003-03-07
Christopher Baker has written an absolutely fabulous guide book to Cuba. It's clearly written, with wit and charm, and it's very obvious that he spent a lot of time in the country exploring the things he talks about. Few things are mentioned in passing - if he's put it in here, you can be sure he's included a fair amount of detail. A good buy.

the worst guide book ever.......2006-03-08
an avid reader, writer, and traveller, i believe religiously in the value of a good guide book. if i were to judge all travel guides based on my experience with Frommers Cuba i would be an atheist. Every major point proved to be the complete contrary. my guess is that the previous revue was written by someone from frommers. honestly, this book did not ruin my vacation, but if i had not realized from the beginning how wrong the information was, it would have completely destroyed my time in cuba.
Frommer's fan.......2004-01-06
Frommer's Cuba was my first guidebook purchase ever!! And what a great buy. I had done most of my travel research online or through word of mouth but with Frommer's, I was able to not only get detailed information of the sites of the country, I was also able to choose between several different options. I like how they categorized the different places within the book so you don't have to waste time with options that are out of your price range or out of your interest.
