My First and Last Patterson Book.......2007-10-18
This was the first Patterson book I have read, and it will be my last. Life is too short for this stuff. Nothing happens for the first four fifths of the book, and then when it does, it was like: "What was that?" I kept thinking that this is low-grade "James Bond versus the arch- villain". For some reason Patterson inserts a bunch of relationship stuff and "boo-hoo-hoo I can't see my kid because I'm divorced". Many loose ends and a conclusion(?) with no resolution.
Permit me to summarize for you: Bad guy is very bad, he shoots people, escapes, good guy chases, bad guy gets away, bad guy blows other people up, bad guy shoots more people in the head, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I wanted to enjoy this book, buy I really did not like it at all. The unabridged audio book version is horrible with annoying sound effects and distracting music.
If you choose to abuse yourself and read this book, do yourself a favor and borrow it from a library. Or better yet, pick up something written by Tom Clancy.
Big Fan Felt very dissapointed.......2007-09-20
I am big fan of James Patterson. But this book disappointed me so much that this is the first time, I am writing review any book. This book forced me write this review. If you are big fan of James Patterson, please please skip this book. Because this is nothing but big big disappointment. The story takes you to a peak and drop you from 50,000 foot free fall till you hit the rocky ground and felt I have wasted all this time on this stupid book. I am sorry to say this, but it is very true.
Poor Attempt.......2007-07-12
It seems as if the author wrote this while running for a plane at an airport. Short, meaningless chapters, poor pacing, and inferior character development. Does anyone really care what happens to these characters? Not me.
London Bridge Fell Down.......2007-07-08
This book seemed a formulaic labor that Patterson had to get through and be done with. Once he got to the point where Cross was going to capture the criminals he wanted to get, the rest seemed matter of fact. Cross chased these two guys through two previous novels, and this book - where he finally got them - seemed, to me, anti-climactic.
Definitely not his best ...........2007-05-30
I'm a big fan of Patterson's "Alex Cross" series, but this one was just not very good. It was very far-fetched and the ending was like hitting a brick wall. It was also tough to keep up with all the characters that were introduced. It's not the worst book I've read and it does keep you turning the pages ... just don't expect too much, and don't expect to have all your questions answered.

Book Description
For countless readers, one of life’s great pleasures is the mesmerizing magic of a Victorian mystery by New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry. Her dramas of good and evil unfolding inside London’s lavish mansions and teeming slums hold us spellbound. Now, in Dark Assassin, she sweeps us into a darkly compelling world that we never dreamed existed.
A Thames River Police superintendent struggling to win the respect of his men, William Monk is on a patrol boat near Waterloo Bridge when he notices a young couple standing at the bridge railing, apparently engaged in an intense discussion. The woman waves her arms and places her hands on the man’s shoulders. A caress or a push? The man grasps hold of her. To save her or to kill her? Seconds later, the pair plunge to their death in the icy waters. Monk can’t help but wonder, was it an accident, a suicide, or a murder? It seems impossible to determine the truth, but haunted by the woman’s somber beauty, he is impelled to try.
Mary Havilland was her name, and she had planned to marry Toby Argyll, the fair-haired man who shared her fate. Mary’s father, an engineer employed by the Argyll Company, had recently died–a suicide, according to the police and Mary’s sister. But Mary’s friends tell Monk that she suspected her father had been murdered because of his stubborn insistence that the Argyll Company’s current project–the construction of a splendid new sewer system for the metropolis–was so badly flawed that it put the entire city in peril from flood and fire.
Monk is now faced with the mysteries of the three deaths. Aided by his intrepid wife Hester, he starts looking for answers and is soon treading a slippery path that takes him from the luxurious drawing rooms where powerful men hatch their unscrupulous plots to a world beneath the city where poor folk fight starvation. In nightmarish tunnels, Monk and Hester find true friends, among them Scuff, a young mudlark; Sutton the ratcatcher; and Snoot, Sutton’s clever terrier. For once, even Monk’s old enemy, Superintendent Runcorn, is on his side. As rainfall strains the fragile manmade underground, Monk must connect the clues before death strikes again.
With characters as vivid as Dickens’s, gripping courtroom scenes, breathless horrors beneath the earth, and a plot that twists and turns toward a stunning denouement, Dark Assassin is absolutely one of Anne Perry’s best.

Customer Reviews:
Anne Perry's Monk NEVER disappoints........2007-06-22
Anne Perry's beautiful prose and her excellent scope of social values in Victorian England is top notch. Her mysteries are of both historical value and pure, unadulterated entertainment. William Monk is often a mystery in himself except what Anne Perry allows us in exquisite probing. Once begun, it's difficult to put down any Monk book. Once you finish, you're looking for the next.
Great book.......2007-05-13
This was one of Anne Perry's best books. I've been waiting for another William Monk novel, and this one was superb. The plot was great, kept one guessing until the very end. A hard book to put down and yet so enjoyable that I didn't want it to end. The author's understanding of history in England in the Victorian era is fascinating. I feel as if I am right there in that particular time and place. Her descriptions of the characters are detailed enough to picture them in the mind's eye as if you saw actual pictures of them. I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good mystery.
History and Mystery, an unbeatable combination.......2007-05-07
First Sentence: "Waterloo Bridge loomed in the distance as William Monk settles himself more comfortably in the bow of the police boat."
William Monk is now an Inspector with the Thames River police. London is building a new sewer system after The Great Stink of 1858. While on boat patrol, Monk and his men see a couple arguing and both go into the polluted Thames which kills them. But what did they see? Was it an accident that became a fatal accident? A murder and the killer dies with the victim? A suicide and the man dies trying to save the woman? The woman's death is proclaimed a suicide. Monk doesn't believe anyone who was working so hard to clear her father's reputation, after he also died of a supposed suicide, and provide he was right in believing the way in which the sewers were being built was dangerous would take their own life. Monk even joins forces with his old nemeses, Superintendent Runcorn.
Ms. Perry continues to impress me with her writing. Her ability to take an historic event and build an interesting, suspenseful story around it is unsurpassed. She creates fascinating characters and makes them real; not only Monk and Hester, is wife, but Scuff, the street urchin who feels responsible for Monk, and Sutton the ratcatcher and his dog, Snoot. Each of the characters is brought to live and image under Ms. Perry's writing. I am always delighted to find the newest book by Ms. Perry.
enjoyable.......2007-04-11
I love the characters and the mood set by Anne Perry. Great story with a real feel for the time period.
Deep Waters.......2007-03-28
I am a William Monk fan to the point that I like this series better than Perry's other two. Monk and Hester have a social conscience, a steadfast integrity, a deep committment to search for justice and truth no matter how difficult it may be. It is this that gives these books a depth that keeps the reader coming back for more.
Monk has a new job as superintendent with the Thames River Police. He is still uncertain in his new job, and is not sure how his men will take to him. In this mystery, Monk is on regular patrol near the Waterloo Bridge when he and his crew helplessly watch as a couple fall into the dark frigid waters. The freezing water and heavy clothes insures that no rescue is possible. Was it a murder/suicide, an accident or a death pact?
The two are identified as Toby Argyll and Mary Havilland, a young couple in love and planning to marry. Monk discovers that Mary's father is also dead, an apparent suicide. He worked for the Argyll Company, an important firm involved in the building of what is to be a splendid new London sewer system. Monk also discovers that Mr. Havilland had expressed serious doubts about the proposed system and he voiced these doubts. Mary did not believe her father committed suicide, she claimed he was murdered because of his vocal doubts about the sewer system.
Monk and Hester investigate the deaths of the young couple and in an unual twist, Monk receives help from his old nemisis, Superintendent Runcorn. Runcorn investigated Mary's father's death and is having second thoughts about it being suicide.
I gave "Dark Assassin" 4 stars instead of 5, because Perry does not have Hester as involved in this mystery as she has been in the past and her absence is noticeable. It also delves more on Monk's new duties and his uncertainties in his new job rather than on the subplots that are usual in his other novels. However, it is still an absorbing read and one which furthers our understanding of Victorian England society and Monk and Hester's place in it.

Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author Julia London comes the second novel in her irresistibly romantic Desperate Debutantes trilogy, in which three suddenly destitute aristocratic young ladies must resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams.
Lady Greer Fairchild's only hope of avoiding marriage to the first bidder lies in journeying into the untamed Welsh countryside in search of an inheritance she's not sure even exists -- one reportedly controlled by Rhodrick Glendower, Earl of Radnor, also known as the Prince of Powys. Rumor has it that the prince is rough, ruthless -- even a murderer. But Greer never imagined that the brute would refuse to let her leave his remote castle until she has proven her identity. Or that she would find herself powerfully attracted to this passionately virile man whose gruff demeanor belies a proud and sensual nature. The further Greer falls under his spell, the more determined she becomes to unravel the secrets of her Welsh heritage and the mystery surrounding the dark prince who dares her to become his wife and princess.
Customer Reviews:
Major Disappointment! =(.......2007-09-13
- I stopped at page 100. And "ditto" on Greer's attributes already mentioned here.
- I've really enjoyed Julia London in the past, ("The Hazards of Hunting a Duke" was wonderful!) but "Greer" was *so* ridiculous: winey, prejudiced, hypocritical, and downright stupid! Her actions, her attitude, even her dialogue! I honestly couldn't find one thing I liked about her.
Greer takes Percy, a complete stranger she has met on a public coach, at his every word, for absolutely everything he says, simply because he is smooth and polite and knows how to lay on the charm; where Rhoderick is quiet, honest, albeit, somewhat suspicious and brusque. (And who wouldn't be if some stranger showed up on your doorstep and demanded money? )
- I thought perhaps it was just a mood so I put the book down and tried again a couple other times to read it. Nope! No better! I can only recall one other time I have ever put a book down and not completed reading it. This was very disappointing for me! =(
Enjoyed it from beginning to end.......2007-08-21
I picked up this book, the middle one in the trilogy, not knowing much about it. Now I'll have to pick up the other two. I didn't mind the least that the heroine was somewhat immature. Made her seem more real to me and I sort of would expect some immaturity from a sheltered high-society debutant. She can't very well be like a 21st century self-assured business woman with an MBA and a thick stock portfolio behind her :-)
I thought the story was taut and very sexy. Loved the prince. Just love a dark/scarred hero, I suppose. Their love story unfolded step by step and took me along. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
Loved it!.......2007-08-02
I'm never disappointed when I read one of Julia London's books.. this one has just as much sexy spunk as the others... loved it!
Thank Mommy for Helping me Find the right person.......2007-06-21
Geer, got in a situation in which she couldn't get out of, leaving London without knowing anything about where she was going or who she might encounter on her journer. Mr Percy appeared to be pleasent enought but since she did not know any one, she took up with him, believing without question, everything he told her about the area and Rhodrick. Then to welcome Mr. Percy advances, showed just how little she knew about the world she traveled in. Rhodrick, was a good guy, everyone that talked to her about him, advised her that he was, this to me would bring about a question in my mind, if Percy was lying. but Geer still couldn't believe him to be a nice guy. Geer got a little trying towards the end, but she pulled through, thanks to her mother (in spirit), and realized that she loved Rhodrick.
Perfect Summer Read!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-20
Pulled an all nighter to finish this one! Fabulous summer read. Rhoderick was the perfect hero and Greer his fiesty perfect match. This has to be my favorite Julia London so far. My idea of a great way to spend a hot summer night! London's wicked wit kept me turning pages and the sexy hero left me wanting more! Can't wait for the next installment of the Desperate Debutantes!

Customer Reviews:
Pithecanthropus.......2001-09-10
The book contains a wealth of practical information however there are errors in the mathematical formulas, dates and etc. This is most frustrating from a reader point of view and dampened the confidence in the material presented. However, it is relatively a easy read for general understanding of the money and FX markets. I hope the author does a more thorough check in the future edition in order to do this book justice.
Excellent practical book for the beginners.......2000-10-02
This is a great practical book for the beginners and intermediate people in the market. When I started in the market as a business analyst, with no prior experience, it was a confused world of trading. After reading this book, things make much more sense. In addition, the book explains brief analytics on how to price and when and why certain instruments will be used for trading. It is geared towards trading. Refer to other books if you are more interested in middle/back office functionality (like settlements, P&L calc, risk management etc.)
Great help for trainers.......2000-07-26
Many a times, trainers in the banking industry find it very difficult to teach complex subjects like foreign exchange and money markets to relatively junior guys. This book will prove to be of great help to those trainers. Probably the first ever attempt in this subject.( Luca's text book can easily be replaced by this book just because of its excellant padagogy). Hope other titles advertised by RFT will also become available soon, specially the one on Risk Management.
Not recommended for anyone who has previous experience.......1999-08-12
If you have some experience of foreign exchange trading, this book is not for yourself. You would learn everything written here within the first six weeks of your job as a foreign exchange trader.
However, this book is great for the REAL beginners who want to learn about foreign exchange from the very beginning and for trainers or teachers who teach those who has little knowledge the foreign exchange. This book starts from explaining what bids and asks are and explains so far up to the mechanics of foreign exchange derivatives. The most remarkable feature of this book is illustrations of deal components and market segments showing how each deal components and markets are related to each other. Detail explanation on different market conventions applied to different currencies is also useful. Short questions at end of chapters are good to review what you should take away from the chapters.
Excellent Book.......1999-07-09
This book is excellent for beginner as well as for advance. It covers all the details right from bottom to top in a very lucid language. It also covers enough diagrams that explains the subject very well.

Customer Reviews:
Lord of Ice.......2007-08-26
It was a wonderful book. I would recommand it to any reader interested in historical romances.
A Nice Romance (Military Style).......2007-05-15
This was the first book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it. I thought it was well written and nicely edited. I believe a "good romance" book needs to involve female characters that I would consider a friend and a romantic male character. This book has those qualities. I don't agree with the "spotlight review" dated 2002 that this was a father/daughter relationship because they did not know each other until her appointed guardian died and then Damien went to tell her. She was 19 by then and they were attracted to each other. She was too old to be left in the "girls school" anyway. Damien proved to be a true hero in many things. A Colonel and war hero capturing Napolean and facing "war terrors" for his time in service. Damien was an all around "nice guy" and helped Miranda solve several "problems." Don't want to give away the story by telling too much. I enjoyed it and I'm rather picky.
Thoroughly enjoyed it! .......2007-02-12
I just finished reading Lord of Ice (read Lord of Fire yesterday), and I have to say I enjoyed Damien's story much more than Lucien's. I "connected" with Damien and Miranda, and thought their story was a great deal more poignant than Lucien's. His vulnerability (a hero prerequisite in a Gaelen Foley novel) is -- in my opinion -- much more believable than Lucien's -- there's nothing more sexy than a man who blushes shyly in front of the woman he loves. Miranda was a strong match for him; after she vows to behave, she does.
Just an all-around good book. Entertaining and thoughtful. What more can you ask? Ms. Foley's done a great job with her "Knight Miscellany" series. Now I'm starting Lady Jacinda's story -- !
I'd rate this 10 stars if I could..........2007-01-11
I loved this book. Damien was everything I love in a romance hero: strong, sexy, and kind-hearted. Miranda was spunky and fun. It did not surprise me at all that Ms. Foley wrote Miranda as a strong willed woman who falls head over heels in love, submitting to him as another reviewer wrote. She was seeking adoration from the beginning of the novel and she found it with Damien.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick read that entertains as well as touches the heart. Bravo, Ms. Foley!
Damien is another hot Knight!.......2007-01-02
There are many other long reviews, so this will be brief. This is the 3rd book in the Knight Miscellany series, following The Duke and Lord of Fire. I suggest they be read in order so you will be more familiar with the other family members that have a part in this book. I liked Damien the war hero and the sexual tension between him and his grown-up ward, Miranda. The story is fairly simplistic and predictable, but has good entertainment value.

Book Description
Inspired by New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries's School for Heiresses series, this delightful anthology features four young women who learn that there's nothing textbook about love. . . .
"It is better not to marry at all than to marry badly."
-- Mrs. Charlotte Harris, headmistress
At the School for Heiresses, the lessons go far beyond etiquette and needlepoint. In addition to teaching her students how to avoid fortune hunters, headmistress and founder Charlotte Harris proposes the radical notion that women of means need not shackle themselves to men at all -- unless they find a suitable, desirable mate. So lessons in the fine art of acquiring a loving and passionate husband are part of the curriculum at this highly unusual school. And as the holidays approach, Mrs. Harris sends her young ladies home with personally tailored lessons to work on. Will they return any closer to finding the perfect husband?
Join this dazzling roster of authors as they put their own spin on the School for Heiresses in four spirited tales of passion!

The School for Heiresses .......2007-08-13
Ten Reasons To Stay by Sabrina Jeffries
The new Earl of Monteith, Colin Hunt, wants nothing more than to find some long sought after peace and a bride who will give him that. What he finds is the cloaked figure of a tempting woman trying to steal one of his horses. Eliza Crenshawe is Colin's mystery woman, and the tale she spins is unbelievable. When he finds out that she might be telling the truth, instead of sending her back, he finds himself giving her ten reasons to stay.
Ten Reasons To Stay is a lusty love story. It's romantic and mysterious as well. I like Colin and Eliza very much.
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle
Martinique is leaving The School For Heiresses to live with her uncle, Baron Rothewell. The Baron will undoubtedly try to find Martinique a suitable husband and fast, but what she wants is love and passion.
Justin St. Vrain is going through the motions of life with little expectation and desire until a mistaken and passionate encounter with Martinique has him slowly rethinking his life's shallow goals.
The romance was a bit dimmed for me when the hero intended to bed one woman then beds another in her place. I do so enjoy watching said rogue fall hard though. After Midnight is full of mystery and passion. It's a good story with fun characters.
The Merchant's Gift by Julia London
Grace Holcomb's father insists she marry a wealthy and titled gentleman. He has done everything in his power to mold Grace into the proper young lady, but she still lacks suitors. Barrett Adlaine is a merchant and unfortunately for Grace, he's the only man she is attracted to. Barrett wants Grace, but in order to have her he'll have to convince her that true love is worth more than a title.
Grace disappointed me in The Merchant's Gift. I thought she was weak and that she hurt poor Barrett's feelings knowing full well how it feels to be cast out of society. I did love Barrett though, and the ending is very romantic.
Mischief's Holiday by Renee Bernard
Alyssa Martin has gotten herself in trouble again. She seems to find it even when she is determined to stay away from it. When Leland Yates saves her from a carriage mishap, then turns out to be a guest at her father's home, Alyssa is sure her troubles are just beginning again, but she may be in for a surprise when sedate, quiet Leland decides that he likes the kind of trouble Alyssa brings to his life.
Mischief's Holiday is a very tender and romantic story. Alyssa is sweet and endearing and Leland is very sexy. I wished this had been a longer story. I wanted more!
The School for Heiresses has a good group of stories in it. There is romance, passion, and drama in each one. There is a common theme in the stories but they each stand alone nicely

Very Enjoyable!
2 out of 4 isn't too bad.......2007-05-15
The concept of this anthology is strange to me. You have one author that has a series and then these other authors trying to write stories about the same series? Good in theory perhaps but I'm not sure it was a success. Only one of the authors pulled it off (besides Jefferies of course). I didn't hate it; however I am glad I bought it at a discount store. Two of the stories were really good. Jefferies' and Bernard's - the other two were lacking.
1 - Sabrina Jefferies' Ten Reasons to Stay - this was great. I really like her writing style and besides it was a continuation of characters we've already read about. I love series so it worked for me.
2 - Liz Carlyle's After Midnight. I didn't dislike it so much as I felt like I was missing something important. Like an entire book. I think I was suppose to know who all of those characters were but because I have not read Liz Carlyle (maybe I should?) I didn't. I thought there was too much story trying to be told in a short story format - maybe this was a tie in to one of her series?
3 - Julia London's The Merchants Gift - I don't think I've read any of her books but this story didn't do anything for me. The man I liked, hard working, strong, honest, and sexy - everything likeable in a hero. The woman on the other hand was a spineless silly twit. It was one of those stories where you think, wow he deserves so much better than her. What a shame they ended up together.
4 - Renee Bernard's Mischief's Holiday was a delight and I loved it. She should have had second billing in this book rather than Liz Carlyle. Of course Jefferies gets first, it's her series, but to be honest I think this was my favorite. I love writers that can make me laugh and really feel for the characters in the book and this is one of those, even in a short story format. She did a really good job tying it into the School for Heiresses idea as well. Besides all of that Bernard is a great new writer. If you have not read A Lady's Pleasure by her you are missing out. It's different and a really good read. I'm looking forward to Madame's Deception coming out in August 2007.
I really enjoyed 2 out of 4 books .......2007-02-27
The School for Heiresses is four stories of women are finished with school and on their own for the first time.
Ten Reasons to Stay by Sabrina Jeffries was very enjoyable. Eliza is running away from her uncle who wants to marry her off and finds herself stealing/borrowing a horse from Colin the new Earl of Monteith. Colin lockes Eliza up in his closet until her finds out the real truth. Very Steamy - a great read....
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle was missing something - no my favorite. Justin crawls into the wrong bed and finds Martinique and not his lover. It has moments but I was glad it was a short story.
The Merchants Gift by Julia London was a very sweet story. I didn't like the Grace the main character she didn't have a back bone.
The final book Mischief Holiday by Renee Bernard was very good. Lots of stolen kisses, humor and great characters.
Fun, Flirty, Fast anthology .......2007-02-24
Each story ties into The School for Heiresses world created by Sabrina Jeffries. The heroines have their own personality, which compliments the mix of authors as they have their own style and voice. They tackle a different tried and true theme in romanceland, adding a twist to make it interesting. Two stories worked really well for me, one was okay and one didn't work at all.
Sabrina Jeffries, Ten Reasons to Stay, is a take on the `regency miss trying to escape the evil guardian's plans to make her marry someone not of her choice to pay off his debt'.
Colin is a very interesting character, who is of mixed race and suddenly finds himself the Earl of Monteith. [If you haven't read Only a Duke Will Do, you should and you get more of his backstory here as well] Eliza has a pretty good head on her shoulders. And is trying to do something vs waiting for someone to rescue her. [The Twist: Some naughty books and mixed heritage]
Sabrina Jeffries has a great way of taking historical fact and expanding on it. Her world may not always follow the letter of the law of history but they come across as believable. I always find myself closing her books with a smile on my face. Grade: B
After Midnight by Liz Carlyle does the `regency miss gets caught with a rake so they have to marry'.
Martinique is a beauty. She has a brain to match it and a mysterious past in the West Indies. Justin St. Vrain was a very, very naughty boy. Years ago he ran off to Paris with another man's wife. Now his father is dead and the title is his. [The Twist: Martinique is a courtesan's daughter. The woman Justin ran off with was his stepmother. And the story starts off a new series!]
I love this story and the fact that these people aren't your normal Regency fare. It might have to do with the fact it has made me way excited about the new series. I can't wait to spend more time with these characters. Grade A-
The Merchant's Gift by Julia London tries her hand at the `wealthy merchant daughter's duty is to marry a title'.
Grace, as would be expected, has a hard time trying to mix with the ton. Her duty is to marry a title and little else seems to matter. Barrett Adlaine is nothing more than a merchant and thus she believes not for her.
[The Twist: The hero is pretty betaish and does the chasing.]
I don't like the 'selling your daughter for a title' plot. And Mr. Holcomb gets way too much screen time, add in this is a novella and it way drops my enjoyment level. I could never see Grace as anything more than a gold digger, regardless of her but it is for my father and expected of me lines. Adlaine should have ran far and fast away from the chit. He was too good of a hero for Grace. Grade D.
Mischief's Holiday is Renee Bernard's tale of `Nice guy falls for clumsy regency miss evil cousin tries to steal him'. (At least I think that is what it was going for....)
Alyssa Martin (regency name?!?) wants to get married, fall in love and live happy ever after. And for once, she would like to stay out of trouble while doing it. [The Twist: The story is more of a `traditional' regency.]
Cute story with a sweet heroine but too slapsticky for my taste. And the tone was completely different from the other three in style. It may have worked better for me if this was the second in the anthology then to end with it. Regardless the story didn't seem to end as much as stop. Grade C-
If you are looking for a meaty historical, keep looking, but if you are looking to lose yourself with some fun characters for a bit, this is just the ticket. Readers of the series will enjoy it and new readers should be able to follow along just fine.

Book Description
Sally, now 25, is comfortably settled with her child, Harriet, her work, and her London friends. But when a complete stranger claims to be both her husband and Harriet's father, Sally's whole world comes crashing down around her. With nowhere to turn, she escapes with Harriet into the slums of London's East End--and finds help in some unexpected quarters.
"Pullman is fast becoming a modern-day Dickens for young adults. The setting is the same, the strong eye for characters is there, as are the brooding atmosphere, the social conscience, and the ability to spin plot within plot. Sally Lockhart is now a young woman, left alone with a toddler. Nothing prepares her for the shock of receiving a summons from a man she has never even heard of, suing for divorce and the custody of her beloved Harriet. Sally struggles against the net closing around her, seeking to find out who is persecuting her and why. The writing style is lively and direct, and there's lots of action. This is a suspense novel with a conscience, and a most enjoyable one."--School Library Journal.

Strange, good, satisfying.......2007-10-05
I loved Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy so much, so I picked up his Sally Lockhart series to keep my glow going. They're really good; not quite as incredible as the HDM books, but very interesting, engaging and suspenseful. I loved the first book in the series; the second was confusing but very good too. This one, book 3, was a very odd book, with odd characters, to put it mildly. But it was even more gripping than the previous Sally Lockhart installment. Some awful things happen in it, too; I cried several times throughout reading this. I most definitely recommend this, but read books 1 and 2 first, to get the background of the characters and their motivations.
Best of the Trilogy.......2005-08-11
I stayed up until 3 a.m. reading this book on a night before I had to go to work. It was worth every minute: a page-turning thriller that would put any of the "adult" novels of the genre to shame.
Interesting portrait of immigrants in Victorian England.......2005-05-19
This book is quite different from the previous Sally Lockhart Mysteries for a couple of reasons: The story really doesn't involve the characters we'd come to know and enjoy in The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, with the exception of Sally herself. It seems to be more of a political/social history of the "Jewish Question" and the prejudices of and persecutions by the lower classes against the new immigrants from eastern Europe who came to settle and build a new life for themselves in London. Too, the identity of the Tzaddik was pretty transparent. I figured out who it was less than half-way through the book. Now I'm not saying it wasn't a good, fast-paced, exciting read...it was. I just think it was different and less of a YA type novel than the previous two. I think older YA readers (and adults) would be able to understand it more than the younger ones. It's a shame Mr. Pullman didn't continue with the Sally Lockhart series after The Tiger in the Well. I learned quite a bit about the times and the people of 19th Century London and am interested in learning more. Fortunately, I just received a copy of George MacDonald Fraser's latest novel Flashman on the March from amazon.uk. so I can continue my education about Victorian England and laugh at the misadventures of Sir Harry as he lies, cheats, and tries to get as far away from anything that hints of danger as possible...unless there is a beautiful woman somewhere to be pursude, wooed, and abandoned. Tally ho!
"You Don't Know Her, She'll Fight...".......2004-10-20
"The Tiger in the Well" is the third of the Sally Lockhart books, and definitely my favourite. Despite the prolonged absence of Jim Taylor, it is the darkest of the books, where the stakes are at their highest. Whilst Jim Taylor and Webster Garland are away on holiday, Sally receives a letter from a man named Mr Parrish, who claims that she is his wife and her baby daughter Harriet is his own. Making it worse, it accuses her of being an unfit mother, and that custody of Harriet should be given to Parrish. Sally is horrified - not only has she never heard of this man before, but the law is not on her side. Somehow there exists a marriage certificate for the two of them, and a birth certificate that testifies Parrish is Harriet's daughter. Despite help from her financial consultant Margaret Haddow and the servants of the house, Sally's case in a court of law seems hopeless - her lawyer didn't even know that Harriet was a girl! There seems only one thing to do, and that's take Harriet and disappear.
And so Sally and her daughter become fugitives, sinking from hotel rooms to poor houses to the street, whilst the law steadily closes in on her. How can she investigate the mystery surrounding her when she must also look after a baby? Soon however, she comes into the path of a man named Daniel Goldberg, a Jewish political writer who claims that they can help one another - he can give Sally a safe place for Harriet, and she can help him uncover the identity of the Tzaddik. This man is one who few have seen, but is feared by almost all, especially the Jewish community. They say he has a `dybbuk' for a servant, a little imp from hell that waits on him, and that he controls almost all the underworld dealings. More importantly however, Goldberg believes that he is behind Sally's dilemma.
"The Tiger in the Well" is definitely my favourite Sally Lockhart book, where Pullman excels himself in his writing skills. The predicament that Sally finds herself in is truly frightening - just think, at any moment your life could be pulled out from under your feet because of spiteful unknown powers. Her gradual decline is realistic and unsettling, and is made especially difficult with the presence of a young child (one who isn't potty trained and is slightly feverish to boot). Often she seems to be hanging at the end of a thread, and it's scary to see this capable woman put in such a position. In such cases, Pullman often gives us the most poignant scenes, such as a waiter advising Sally to change her give-away accent, or of Sally turning in shock, certain that Fred Garland (Harriet's father) is behind her.
For those who missed them in "The Shadow in the North", Rosa and Trembler make appearances, and although Jim Taylor is away for most of the book, he does return in time to make a splash with the invaders who take over his house. But this is mostly Sally's book, especially since we see her both at her strongest, and her most vulnerable.
Pullman also uses Daniel Goldberg has a device to highlight the exploitation of Jews and other immigrants coming into England, and the prejudice held against them - two realities that are sadly going on even today. Perhaps what comes across most vividly in the stories is the readiness with which people are prepared to turn on unknown foreigners, and eagerly foster their hate for those who seem to have more then them. Likewise is the truly appalling plan that the Tzaddik had organised for Harriet - I won't give it away, but it's just horrible, almost unthinkable. One thing that I didn't like however was the huge `deux ex machina' that Pullman instigates in order to resolve the story - for someone who presents himself as an atheist, he certainly heavily relies on the Hand of God in order to save Sally. Some fans of Fred may also not like the new love interest for Sally, and I myself thought it was a bit unnecessary (especially considering that Sally has always been presented as an independent young woman), but it certainly doesn't overshadow the more important aspects of the book.
"The Tiger in the Well" is also the book that has quite a bit of foreshadowing for Pullman's more famous works, the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, including a nasty little monkey, the power of stories, and even a glass of Tokay. It's always interesting linking up stories by the same author, and there are other little thematic touches that appear both here, and in the "Materials" trilogy. The Sally Lockhart books can be read out of order, but if you want to get the best out of this one, I definitely suggest reading "The Ruby in the Smoke" first - the Tzaddik's true identity won't have the same resonance if you don't.
One last note: the Amazon editorial review is from an entirely different book, and must have been posted on the wrong web page. If you're ordering this book, double-check to make sure you're getting the one you want.

Book Description
"An ingenious mystery and an excellent example of manners and caste systems of the Victorian era."
THE CHATTANOOGA TIMES
While the Ellison girls were out paying calls and drinking tea like proper Victorian ladies, a maid in their household was strangled to death. The quiet and young Inspector Pitt investigates the scene and finds no one above suspicion. As his intense questioning causes many a composed facade to crumble, Pitt finds himself couriously drawn to pretty Charlotte Ellison. Yet, a romance between a society girl and so unsuitable a suitor was impossible in the midst of a murder....

Victorian Serial Killer on the loose.......2007-07-20
It took me three tries to get into this book, but once I got hooked I stayed up late and got up early to finish it. The murder mystery is unpredictable with several convincing red herrings thrown in to pull you off track. In the end, the motive behind the killer's actions are alluded to, but not strongly supported by the storyline. This made the ending slightly unsatisfying. However, the Victorian era's customs and manners is presented with picture-painting detail and seemed believable.
Anne Perry uses a very interesting literary device: we can hear the thoughts of only female characters (not all of them, but we never see inside a male character's mind). This helped to focus (or even exagerate?) the emotional and social distance between the male and female characters. Enjoy the book and the character of Charlotte as she changes over the course of the series.
A great beginning!.......2007-07-03
For anyone who loves series of mysteries, this is a great beginning! I can't wait to read the rest!
Good, Not Great!.......2007-05-14
When I learned that there was a series of Victorian era murder/mysteries I became excited since I was bored with the usual historical romances. Ah, thought I, now for some excitement. In the Cater Street Hangman, the first of this series, the plot is good as mysteries go with any number of red herrings thrown in. The final denouement is a surprise (at least it was to me). However, the characters all seem a bit shallow and story movement is slow. At the outset I thought this would be one of those books where I read the first couple of chapters and set it aside. Not so. After a slow start, the story does indeed pick up with bits and pieces of the puzzle being revealed slowly.
For this reader, however, there are many unanswered questions about dangling story lines. Hopefully, they will be answered in the next book in the series. I've given this book 3 stars based on the originality of the plot.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-14
This was the first book I have read by Anne Perry and it definitely makes me beg for more. She brings this Victorian era to life and the characters just jump off the page. I truly felt the feeling of female repression, along with the underlying fear that another young girl will be murdered. While I've never been a fan of mystery, I couldn't help wondering who it could be. The ending was wonderfully suspenseful - and I would have never guessed the murderer in a million years. Brilliant book.
Limited characterisation and doubtful historical accuracy.......2006-09-09
I had been recommended to read Anne Perry, and told by someone that the first book was one of the best, and was very disappointed by what I discovered. It's one of those books with much "telling" of what characters are feeling and how they are developing rather than "showing" those feelings and developments. It is written in an anachronistic style, doesn't have the true ring of the Victorian era at all. (I am comparing to books written in that era - Dickens, Thackeray, Conan Doyle). The author also does one of my least favourite things, which is to forget key information. (spoiler alert) Inspector Pitt is the one who tells the family the name of Edward's mistress, and they later spend much time and effort trying to hide that fact from him. How amateur.
After reading other glowing reviews of the book - "it all seems immediate and alive", her excellent knowledge of upperclass Victorian England life, "excellent characterisation" - I am left wondering whether maybe I read a different book from everyone else. Perhaps the later books in the series will improve.

Book Description
In the Nightside, the hidden heart of London where it's always 3 AM, Detective John Taylor must find an elusive singer known as The Nightingale. Her silken voice has inexplicably lured many a fan to suicide--and Taylor is determined to stop her, before the whole neighborhood falls under her trance. But to catch the swift-winged Nightingale, he'll have to hear the deadly music--and survive.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
John Taylor might have a thing for lost daughters it seems, as he takes on another case involving such a woman. This time she is not lost in the physical sense, but mental, being a famous singer.
A fun tidbit in that the Nightside has its own transvestite superheroine.
We see here that the Nightside is a mixture of superscience and the supernatural, much like Grimjack's Cynosure, for another example, when John is called in at the start to look at the problems a power plant run by an old friend is having. What is at the heart of that is a plot used many a time in comics.
We also discover the newspaper is run by the World's Greatest Victorian Adventurer hero, who was sent through time by his old archenemies, the fate of whom no-one knows.
John, teaming up with Dead Boy, must work out what is going on.
These Nightside books are very entertaining.
More Creepy Fun.......2006-10-10
The Nightside books center on John Taylor, a private investigator who has special abilities that help him find things in a dark, magical place called the Nightside. I love how these are written in a sort of classic pulp fiction detective novel, yet very fresh and fun.
In Nightingale's Lament, the third book, Taylor is hired to find a famous singer in the Nightside whose audience seems to be committing suicide after her shows. Many more creepy (and yet fun) characters are introduced in this story that either aid or try to kill Taylor along the way.
Took me a while to get into it.......2006-07-08
If I were only rating the last third of this book, I'd give it 4 and a half stars. But it took a while to get there, and the piles of cliches at the beginning nearly turned me off. As well, Green's writing style has some flaws - people don't speak like that! and some of the character names are a little too stupid - and, to some extent, just an "Englishness" that makes his style a little more difficult for me, as an American, to get into.
Even at the end of the book, there are many cliches, although Green hams them up so that we know they're there semi-intentionally: the the villain who must explain his motivations to the hero, at length, rather than just killing him; the back-up help that charges in just *after* they're needed. And there are a few things that are unfair; it's my belief that even fantasy requires consistent rules, and characters should not have new powers that suddenly spring out of nowhere, unportended and unprecedented (such as Dead Boy suddenly revealing that he can bring back other dead.)
That said, there are also many, many great lines of dialogue, and that's a big chunk of what gives this book 4 stars in spite of the flaws. Especially toward the end, I was constantly interrupting my spouse's eating or TV viewing to read out loud a sentence or two.
"I've never relied on magic to get me through the many and varied dangers of the Nightside. I've always found using my wits and being downright sneaky much more reliable." Not to mention, "Condiments. Never leave home without them."
Many other reviews have given you details of the plot and of the kinds of supernatural powers that exist in this particular urban fantasy universe, so I won't repeat them. Instead, I'll just advise you to skim lightly the first quarter of the book, start reading more carefully when you get to Pew, and thoroughly enjoy the last quarter.
I expected more.......2006-03-30
I went in not expecting much and that's exactly what I got. It's a quick and easy read but the ending was disappointing. I expect more from an established author. I like the concept of the series and might read the next one but I have been disappointed so far. This one is the worst of the first three in the series.
Singing the Blues (and Blacks) in the Nightside.......2006-03-17
In this, the third installment of Simon R. Green's bloody and brilliant Nightside series, the infamous John Taylor finds himself with a new case, the mystery of the beautiful singer Rossignol (which means Nightingale in French) a torch singer with a voice so sad, so powerful, that some of her fans have taken to killing themselves after hearing her sing.
But John had powerful friends and even more powerful enemies. This novel introduces us to a whole host of dastardly new characters, The Murder Masques, Dead Boy, Julian Advent, and the Cavendishs, just to name a few.
As usual, razor blade action is interspersed with humor as dark as Tarsus in just the right mix to keep you so rived, it's almost impossible to put this book down.
The Nightside series is one of those rare series that no review, let alone mine, is powerful enough to capture fully. It's a set of books that the curious must experience for themselves to get the full feel of the thing, and they will be glad that they did.

And when his passion is finally released, their love can no longer be denied.
Customer Reviews:
My first romantic novel in 15 years and I was unable to put it down until I was finished........2007-09-26
There was something so touching and sweet about this story. I almost missed work because I had been up all night reading it. Amanda is so desperate she offers herself to the governor in exchange for her father's pardon. Her despair, pain and vulnerability are so palpable despite her attempts to hide them behind her tomboysih and defiant exterior. The scene at her father's hanging brought tears to my eyes. Cliff DeWarrene's reaction to her plight and the way he came to her aid won me over. He was truly an honorable man. And he sincerely tried to think of her as an innocent child that needed to be taken care of, offering her his protection without expecting or even accepting anything in return. I found myself laughing out loud when I saw his jealous outbursts while he still denied his feelings for her. Brenda Joyce was very adept at developping these 2 characters and building/evolving their relationship. The sexual tension between them was always there, but she also took the time to build their friendship and their respect for each other. The fact that Cliff still preferred Amanda as "La Sauvage" versus the lady endeared him to me even more. This is basically the story of a gentleman sea captain, an unlikely damsel in distress with a lot of heart and spirit, a love story amid pirates, London's aristocracy, and the Jamaican Islands. What can you ask for more.
Wonderful read!.......2007-06-11
Wonderful read !
I have not read such a good novel in months ! And I devour books! Definitely a keeper.
Fabulous!!.......2007-05-20
An avid fan of romance novels, I just finished reading A Lady at Last and I absolutely adored this book. It will rank in my top ten amongst the hundreds of romance novels I've read.
The story of Cliff and Amanda is refreshing as the hero is not one of the typical brooding overly aggressive males. Instead he is a pure gentleman fighting his feelings and looking to truly take care of and look after the heroine. She is also a delight to read about as she tries to seduce her gaurdian.
Definitely give this one a read!
At last........2007-05-16
This is an excellent title for this book. I now realize that I have read at least one other of the series and will look for the rest because this book was very readable, the characters were interesting and I love series books. The two main characters in this book made me laugh and cry with them. Lovely book.
