Beginning Hawai'ian.......2007-08-11
This book requires a workbook that is unavailable. It is not a good tool for learning Hawai'ian without a teacher.
Except for Lesson One, it's a wonderful book.......2004-10-07
I found 4 great tools for learning Hawaiian, at Amazon. Your success in learning will depend on using them in the right order. They're all great.
Beginner level
1. "Learn Hawaiian at Home", by Kahikahealani Wight
If you're new to the language, this book will walk you patiently through all the basics. Slow? Yes, but it was just what I needed. There are two cassette tapes included, with all the vocabulary, dialogs, reading material and even songs! I found the package reasonably priced.
Beginner to intermediate
2. "Ka Lei Ha'aheao--Beginning Hawaiian", by Alberta Pualani Hopkins
For continuing what you learned in "Learn Hawaiian at Home", this is an excellent book. It will take you all the way through all the Hawaiian grammar, and there are lots and lots of dialogs, giving variations on what you learn.
The downside? Cassette tapes are available, and I know my progress would be much faster if I had the big bucks to buy them. I don't.
Intermediate to advanced
3. Instant Immersion CD
Good points: Very natural-sounding Hawaiian, and lots of it
Downside: If you're a beginner, this will knock the wind out of your sails. The lessons have reading passages, some with very difficult grammar.
No printed matter comes with the CDs. You have to download it from the internet.
Some vocabulary from the lessons are NOT explained. You'll need a big Pukui-Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary to find out the meanings. Not exactly user-friendly!
Still, if you love hearing the lilt of Hawaiian spoken as much as I do, you may opt to get this.
Intermediate to advanced
4. "Let's Speak Hawaiian" by Dorothy M. Kahananui & Alberta P. Anthony
Too difficult for beginners, as it was for me! Explanations are minimal. An exorbitantly-priced tape set is available, but I couldn't afford it.
I was always frustrated with myself for not being able to understand this book. However, after doing a fair amount of learning through the first two books given above, I found that "Let's Speak Hawaiian" is a wonderful extension to what I know. Get this one last!
The seminal textbook of modern Hawaiian.......2004-08-31
Hawaiian is not a language that someone who has no experience with can simply pick up: the nuances and pronunciations alone are enough to scare off the uninitiated and the differences between Hawaiian and Western (and Eastern for that matter) cultures create difficulties that are not easily overcome by obstinate minds. Mrs. Hopkins' book was intended primarily as a textbook to be used as the text for a Hawaiian class and in a classroom environment. Having grown up in Hawaii, the pronunciations were not difficult for me and the exercises were both useful and amusing. While the grammar section in the back is by no mean comprehensive, it should be remembered that this was not meant to be a dictionary.
This is an excellent text for someone who has access to a native speaker with whom he or she can practice with and the standard by which Hawaiian textbooks should be measured.
If you don't agree with me, you are welcome to challenge my opinion in a duel--smallswords or epees--and seek a gentleman's satisfaction.
Poor book for self instruction.......2004-01-12
I bought this book to learn the Hawaiian language on my own. This book was written for people who have access to someone who speaks the Hawaiian language. In the first chapter, it just brushes over pronunciation. The book then then gives an excercise in the end of the that chapter to review street names with someone who speaks the language. I was extremely disappointed with the grammatics and vocabulary offered and the excercises in the end of each chapter were too advanced. It seemed that the information provided in each chapter was not adequate to perform the excerises in the end of the chapters.
Best foreign-language text I've ever used.......2003-06-26
If you thought lanugage-learning was boring, think again! Ka Lei Ha'aheo is a horse of a different color. No more memorization of useless phrases like "the pen of my aunt is on the table." No more obtuse grammar lessons. Full of concise explanations of grammar, carefully selected useful vocabulary, all cemented into place with interesting dialogs and stories, "Ka Lei Ha'aheo" makes language learning a breeze.
Better still, "Ka Lei Ha'aheo" gives the student a taste of Hawaiian history and culture, and an insight into how the language might influence its speakers to view the world differently from English speakers.
Having studied seven other languages using dozens of text books, Ka Lei Ha'aheo is by far the best language text-book I have ever used.

Good reference guide.......2007-08-27
I used this, along with Best Easy Day Hikes to plan a trip to Glacier. I wouldn't necessarily use it as the only reference guide, but it was a good start and was helpful for mileage and difficulty ratings for each trail. I also generally do quite a bit of research for my trips on the internet. This did come in handy one day we were trying to fill an afternoon with a shorter hike, though. It was good to have more detailed information about each trail to assist in that decision.
One thing to be warned about at Glacier - especially if you go early in the season (we went 1st week of July)- information from Rangers is not always accurate or up to date. We were told several trails were closed due to snow that we found out too late weren't. We missed one very good hike due to this. We also were told the Highline trail would only take us a couple of hours. When we got to Granite Park Chalet (4.5 hours later) we found out the trail generally takes at least 4 hours. You will want to add in time for picture taking and possible traffic jams (by mountain goats and such) and if you go early in the season, crossing of snow fields. We also found out that several people were advised not to hike the Highline when we did due to some dangerous snow fields (narrow trail covered in slick snow with a sure to be dead drop off if you should slip). I guess my suggestion would be to ask several people instead of relying on advice from just one. It is a beautiful park that everyone should see once - I would recommend the Highline, Swiftcurrent, and Hidden Lake trails.

What A Book!.......2006-02-16
I accidentally picked this book up in the sale racks - a place where I will try out an author I don't know. What a surprise. What amazing writing. I certainly hope there are other books by Alberta Hawse. I will be searching. Excellent historical Christian fiction.
The Call of the Green Bird.......2003-11-02
The world needs to hear more from this author! For every individual, there are a few books in a lifetime that they would recommend to everyone they love, even buy for them. This is one. This work of historical fiction, by Alberta Hawse, gives readers their money's worth. If you are tired of super-thrillers with world-wide conspiracies and two-dimensional characters with hokey names, this book is for you. "The Call of the Green Bird" is a story about very special, yet ordinary people. Familiar names from biblical literature appear on the fringes, are welcomed into the tale, and become real in ways never before imagined. Many current works of fiction, which address biblical topics are overtly doctrinaire and thus may repel some. "The Call of the Green Bird" is a story about everyone who is looking for the answer to the problem of death.
The story takes place in a Bedouin camp in the deserts of Syria, in 30 A. D. The portrayal of everyday life and practices of the people of the time-period is undoubtedly the product of painstaking research. No pertinent point is glossed over; no ends are left loose. The central character, a teenage boy named Mi'kal, has a yearning to conquer death, and he believes the secret to this lies in the pursuit of the fabled Phoenix, the "Green Bird" which rises from the ashes of its funeral pyre. When rumors of strange happenings in far-off Roman Palestine reach Mi'kal's ears, rumors of healing the sick and the dead, he decides to investigate. The adventures that follow are fast-paced, and intriguing. The story never stumbles.
Alberta Hawse is an adept writer, able to juggle a vast number of characters through numerous plots and subplots. Her fluid descriptive prose created settings so believable I literally felt I was present in every scene. The story is replete with references to details that are distinctly female in their point of view, and yet entirely charming and engaging to the male reader. Her use of foreshadowing was skillful and rarely yielded an outcome that resembled my predictions. The author avoided what to me is the unpardonable sin of placing unbelievable dialogue in the mouths of her characters. Every word seemed tight and natural, and contemporary colloquialisms never reared their ugly heads. For those readers searching for an epic story in the caliber of "Ben Hur," this book will satisfy.

Cost effective.......2006-11-02
This book is a great way to plan the trip ahead.
Pretty much all the information is present in Canada's great
topographical maps, but those are available only when you're there...
A Big Let Down.......2005-08-02
I have used Lonely Planet travel guides for years. Yet, I am sorry to say that this one is a real let down. The lay out is not user friendly. The print styles are very difficult to read. The book is not directed to the outdoors person as was the hallmark of the series. I was throughly dissappointed in this guide. The Moon guide is a vastly superior guide to this area.
great all around bk.......2004-07-26
maybe b/c we're hikers, we wish there was even more info on hiking in these parks! but the hiking info in the bks we thought very helpful. we thought the bk did a great job hitting all different tourists' needs. we especially appreciated all the little charts of "must see's," the basic info (post offices, laundry, etc.), the many well-laid out maps, etc.
our only complaint is that it seems the authors put more passionate energy into the canadian parks. the descriptions in Glacier were a little more blah. in all, a great help though! well worn on our trip.
For Hikers Only.......2004-07-25
I own and use several Lonely Planet Guides. I have come to trust these books as thorough, authoritative and helpful in planning and implementing trips. The Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks book is an exception and meets none of these criteria unless you sole focus is hiking. This book is for hikers and has little information for others. Furthermore, of the 280 pages of actual information, only 57 pages are devoted to Glacier National Park. Information concerning lodging, restaurants and other activities such as cycling is sparse. The few maps that are included detail mainly hiking trails. If this book had been titled A Hikers Guide, I would highly recommended it.
A worthy companion for these parks.......2004-07-08
Just the kind of book I'd want wandering these Parks for the first time. Along with lodging and eating ideas, this book includes maps of the parks, hiking routes and descriptions, and my particular favorite, the section near the end which gave background of the geological, flora and fauna aspects of this region. It was well organized and easily utilized. I carried it my bag and referred to it often, and was able to astound (or annoy) my companions with countless facts.
Book Description
This vibrant collection of drawings was inspired by the hypnotic appeal of the mandala. An ancient form of meditative art, mandalas are complex circular designs that draw the eye inward, toward their centers. These 30 dazzling mandala designs will captivate colorists of all ages, challenging them to create kaleidoscopic effects.
Customer Reviews:
Nice patterns to color.......2007-09-24
Great patterns to color. Lines tend to be too wide and marked, whic makes it difficult to color. If this was corrected, this book should have five stars.
mandalas too small.......2007-09-06
The Mandalas are drawn in thick black leaving little space for coloring. Not the best coloring book I've seen!
Leaves Something To Be Desired..........2007-09-06
In my opinion, this book isn't up to it's previous reviews. I find the designs rather repetitive, and not especially imaginative. They also don't seem to be representative of the spirituality of real mandalas.
Still, not too bad, considering the price.
Wonderful .......2007-05-05
I just ordered several of the Dover Coloring Books and this was one of my favorites. I don't know anything about Mandala's, but the images in this book are intricate and beautiful and I can't wait to start working with them. I even ordered a back up copy!
Nice Mandalas.......2007-04-30
Why I gave it 3 stars-
I feel that there is a flowery sense enamating from it. More of the anima energy and I am not sure of mystical as the correct wording but I am not an expert. Anyhow, I am looking forward to coloring in the mandalas in this book.

Disappointing.......2006-11-25
The National Geographic name prompted me to buy this book, but I was very disappointed. Yes - it covers the major roads through the park and briefly describes the features along those roads. But it never really describes why you might want to go on specific roads, what the most important sights or features are, and what might happen if you got out of the car and actually wanted to see something.
On the plus side, the maps are detailed and list features with short descriptions.
This book is far too basic. I returned it within 24 hours and will look for something better.
It's a road guide.......2004-06-03
This is laid out like the AAA strip maps, each strip covering 5 to 15 miles, with a large-scale map on the inside front cover as an index to the strips. The strips indicate where the turnouts are for a stop, and are a useful guide to the terrain as you drive along each of the Glacier Park roads. No data for hiking, camping, accomodations, etc. but restroom and restaurant locations are given.
Book Description
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is home to a vast network of hiking trails. But if you're only going to be in Glacier and Waterton national parks for a day or two, have time for only one or two short hikes, and you're looking for trails that are not too physically demanding, which trails should you choose? This book answers that question. Best Easy Day Hikes Glacier & Waterton Lakes contains short descriptions and maps of the author's favorite easy day hikes in Glacier and Waterton. All of the hikes in this little book are relatively short, on well-defined, easy-to-follow trails that take you to some of the area's most spectacular scenerywithout taking you to physical extremes. Features 28 hikes.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful Trail Guide.......2007-06-25
Best Easy Day Hikes for Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks is a bit misleading as a title. While there are easy hikes, some are far from it. For example, one hike is nine miles long with a 1200-foot climb while another is over 14 miles long. Fortunately, the distances and elevation changes are clearly marked in the description so it is easy to select those you are willing and able to tackle while leaving the others for the more adventurous. There are also maps for each hike but it sometimes took me a while to use them. The actual trail wasn't always well defined within the larger area portrayed on the map and I often found the trailheads especially difficult to spot. It was not a major problem as I always worked it out in the end but it is an area that could use a bit of improvement.
There are 28 hikes listed and they are broken down into 5 geographic areas of the two parks. My wife and I did 2-3 hikes from each area and found the descriptions to be both helpful and largely accurate. The book is small enough to easily fit in a hip pocket and held up very well during a full week of heavy usage. Color photos would have been a nice addition but that would have made the book both larger and heavier which is not ideal for a pocket guide. Overall, this was a great purchase at an extremely reasonable price.
Very Good for the Money.......1999-12-12
Its construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy to understand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in the book, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevation change included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very well done.

Customer Reviews:
A model of good design.......2007-07-29
Gosh, what can I say? I collect maps and pore over them for ages. I have never actually visited Jasper, though I would like to. I acquired this map not as a guide to a forthcoming trip but as part of a decorating technique that I was developing. Alas, it was too good a map to hang on a wall. The detail and topographic legend are superb. It's sturdily produced and will stand up to grimy hands and rainwater.
A good map.......2007-01-18
A very high quality map of Jasper. It is not really necessary if you are not going to stray from the roads or the main, well marked, trails - but it is nice to have for identifying landmarks.

Testimony to a well-lived life.......2007-07-05
This is a well written biography of a well-lived life. The experiences of Anna and her family during WWII are remarkable, as are the circumstances of their subsequent immigration to the United States.
Inspiring and courageous.......2007-01-31
This is a lovely, inspiring book of faith and courage. It is the story of one family's remarkable stand and unwavering generosity of spirit during the Nazi occupation of Holland during WWII and their subsequent relocation to the United States. A very uplifting and amazing story. A lovely tribute to a mother by her daughter.
